Hello, my name is Michelle and I’m addicted to avocado. It started simply enough: guacamole. But it transformed, slowly, to an obsession with this fruit. I could eat it on anything: burgers, with french fries, grilled with a salad… It’s delicious. It’s green. It’s one of the best sources of protein and good fat out there.
Avocado is the easiest super food for college students to eat. Yes, they’re a little expensive, but good ones are easy to find, easy to store, and especially easy to put on pretty much anything and everything.
Avocados are excellent sources of vitamins E, C, and B6, as well as niacin and zinc. They’re also excellent sources of healthy fat, as well as protein.
Ready for an amazing, easy recipe involving some avocado? This recipe is great for an easy snack or even as a great late breakfast (you know, like those days where you wake up at 1pm?) Read More »

Honey removes dirt from pores and dead skin cells from the surface of your body, while yogurt is an incredible moisturizer. Strawberries have lots of folic acid and vitamin C, which help clean your skin and close pores. Milk is great for softening the skin, vinegar will make your hair shiny, and using honey as a conditioner will increase your hair’s moisture.
So why should I go out and spend $10 on face lotion, $17 on under eye cream, and $10 more on body lotion when I already have all of those things in my kitchen?
Duh, I shouldn’t, and either should you. Instead, let’s all use everyday food and other products we’ve already got lying around the house to do the same things as all those expensive beauty products. Here are 5 at-home remedies to start with that are fun to make, all-natural and easy on the wallet. I think this is what Charlie Sheen would call ‘Winning.’ Read More »

Keeping the healthy-but-good vibe going (AKA chocolatey things that won’t blow your Spring Break diet plan), this week I bring you my spin on a recipe that has been making healthy foodies (and even not-so-healthy foodies!) gaga for years: chocolate avocado mousse.
Featured ingredient: Avocado
Based on recent studies, the avocado is another anti-cancer food. It’s also high in potassium and monosaturated (read: good) fat. Eating avocados can promote healthy skin and hair. Plus, it’s silky texture and muted flavor make it the perfect base for just about any sweet recipe.

[Every week, CC and John bring you some of the weirdest, funniest, saddest things he hears on his college campus. Join the Overheard revolution!Leave your own overheard convos in the comments or send ‘em over!]
“Yeah, Catholic high school was abstinence-only. They never taught us about condoms or cock rings or anything like that.”
At Starbucks:
Man: “I can’t help it! I’m impotent!” (Pointing at the drinks menu) “It’s… this Greek goddess stuff!”
“That’s how you choose who gets to keep the dog after the divorce. You can cheat, you know. Rub bacon on your hand or something like that.”
“Yeah. That’s how you choose who gets to keep the kids, too. I think the bacon thing still works.”
“No, I’m not gay. I just like tickle fights with other men.” Read More »

No, it’s not “sweet” that my boyfriend and I cook together from time to time, it’s actually rather hot. You can lick the bowl (or eachother) together, have some romance in a hot kitchen and turn a rather boring task into something o-so-sexy.
Find a guy (or gal) and give this guacamole recipe a go.
Side Note: Do not itch your eyes while you cut ANY of these ingredients. Oh, and never bring the onions/peppers into the bedroom. Seriously.
Guacamole for Two and then some:
You will need: A bowl, a spoon/fork, a cutting board, and a good set of knifes (blood=no good)
Two Avocados
Three small tomatoes (apparently the FDA has announced all tomatoes are OK once again, yes!)
Cilantro
Red Onions
Limes
Hot Peppers (use your discretion)
Sea Salt and Ground Pepper Read More »
Once upon a time, I was skinny. Not to say that I’m not within my healthy weight range now, but back then, I was mind-blowlingly small. I didn’t do anything special, really. I practiced yoga a few times a week in my basement bedroom with the door locked and mood music playing (and because of that, felt I could totally splurge on the double quarter pounder with cheese meal at McDonald’s if the urge struck.) Now, however, keeping my girlish figure takes twice the work – and my days of gorging myself with red meat are long gone.
But, when I waved goodbye to foods high in trans fat and grease and hello to raw, healthy food I discovered quite a few green gems in the world of fruits and veggies. Among them, my personal fave, the avocado.
I know what you’ve heard. Avocados are high in (gasp!) fat. But, they’re high in the good kind of fat – monosaturated fat. They also contain vitamins, dietary fiber and potassium.
But perhaps the best thing about the avocado is how effing delicious it is. It’s not super-sweet, but it is super easy to incorporate into appetizers, meals or store in the fridge as an alternative, nutritious late-night snack .
Here are a few ways you can add the av to your next meal: Read More »

I’m probably one of the hardest gals to please when it comes down to what’s for lunch.
I love flavor, I need my food to be moderately healthy, not too expensive, and easy to make. I do love cooking elaborate meals, but not in the middle of the day when I’m consumed with everything else I’m doing.
So over time, a few simple lunches have worked their way into my mental cookbook, simple lunches that I’m now going to share with you! Here are four options that are delicious, easy, and relatively cheap to make, as well as healthy for you…well, healthier than Wendy‘s…that’s for sure.
1. Toast whole wheat bread. Spread your favorite hummus across both pieces of the bread (I prefer using the really spicy stuff). Then add turkey or your favorite lunch meat.
2. Stuff a whole wheat wrap with avocado slices, tomato slices, and mozzarella cheese. This is AWESOME, trust me! Read More »

Call me jaded or skeptical, but I firmly believe that being poor while young is a rite of passage. It is the seed that pushes us to grow in the future.
You know what else is a rite of passage while young? Wanting to be beautiful.
We don’t want to be beautiful in the way we wanted to in middle school. For example, I no longer believe that I will transform into Angelina Jolie one day. However, as you become older and more embracing of your natural features, you also become more interested in how exactly to highlight them and make what you were given work for you.
So lets talk skin. We all want clear and firm skin. Many of us already know that the answer to this is a regular face mask. However, did you know that you can make your own face masks with ingredients straight out of your kitchen?
That’s right. No wasting time at the drug store trying to figure out exactly what sort of classification of screwed up skin you have. And no wasting money on a mask you could make in a matter of minutes from crap you already have. On top of all of that…in my experience…I have found that these homemade masks actually work better than the ones I buy from the store. Go figure.
So here are some ideas for you: Read More »

Between class, studying, reading (both for class and your necessary dose of College Candy reading of course), partying, drinking, partying, The Hills, Grey’s, and all other important daily activities in college life, leaves us students with no time to cook but no money to eat out. (Such problems we have- but seriously why is food SO expensive?!)
Cooking can be a huge money saver, calorie saver (we all love that) and now (yay) a huge time saver.
Check back each week for two quick and yummy recipes that will be ready in time for you to catch up with Lauren and Audrina(er- I mean get back to the library).
Here are two muy delicioso recipes to try:
From Cooking Light:
Black Bean Burritos with Avocado
Ingredients
1/2 cup diced peeled avocado
1 tablespoon fresh lime juice
1 teaspoon olive oil
2 garlic cloves, minced
1/4 cup water
2 teaspoons ground cumin
2 (15-ounce) cans black beans, drained
4 (10-inch) flour tortillas
6 tablespoons fat-free sour cream
6 tablespoons bottled salsa
Preparation
Combine avocado and lime juice, tossing to coat.
Heat oil in a medium saucepan over medium-high heat. Add garlic; sauté 1 minute. Stir in water, cumin, and beans. Reduce heat to medium; simmer 3 minutes or until thoroughly heated, stirring occasionally. Warm tortillas according to package directions. Spoon 1/4 cup bean mixture into each tortilla. Top with 1 1/2 tablespoons sour cream, 1 1/2 tablespoons salsa, and 2 tablespoons avocado; roll up.
