We all have our bad fashion days. Sometimes the outfit you throw on in the morning makes sense in your half-asleep state of mind but really…it just doesn’t work. You step outside and get a few weird looks, but it’s not actually that bad. Sometimes, however, celebrities make horrible fashion mistakes on the red carpet…and they follow them forever. Never, even with my exhausted, half open eyes, would I ever choose one of these outfits. In fact, I would never even be caught dead in them.

No one knows better than manrepellar.com that what some girls find fashionable, men find somewhat less than sexy. Guys don’t remember what shoes you wore on your last date, what color your top was or if you wore the same jeans two days in a row (unless they really love the way they make your ass look). Progressive, fashion-forward, and bag-like silhouettes–men just don’t get it. And they definitely don’t find these ‘statement’ pieces sexy. When you’re walking around the streets of New York City, you’re bound to see just about every type of fashion known to man. However, recently I’ve been spotting something just terrible, over and over again. Middle aged moms rocking brands that should be forgotten about completely after finishing your last set of SATs  and sending in your deposit slip for college.

I can’t figure out why they are wearing these clothes. There are cheaper and much more stylish alternatives out there without the obnoxious branding that we thought was so totally cool as teenagers. It seems like just yesterday I was begging my parents to buy me the latest grey sweater and matching tank from Abercrombie as my birthday present.  And while this list of stores is a pretty awesome blast from the past, they should be left to girls fretting about Prom, acne, and learning how to drive.

Most of us who lived through the ’80s would rather forget the decade of big hair, big shoulder pads and all-around bad style. Well, don’t look now, many of those fashion don’ts are making a comeback – whether you like it or not. Here’s a rundown of some trends on the horizon that should come with a warning label: Wear At Your Own Risk:

Acid-Wash

Whether it’s called Ice Wash, Mineral Wash or Acid Wash, this embarrassing ’80s denim trend is back on fashion’s radar. Wear if you dare, or wait until this trend fades into oblivion, hopefully never to return again. Cheap Monday Tight Ice Wash Jeans, $63 at ssense.com

Ripped Jeans

Celebrities like Katie Holmes and Jessica Alba have been seen recently sporting expertly ripped boyfriend jeans. Denim designers like Current/Elliott and 7 For All Mankind have ripped styles for $200 and up. Our advice? Find an old pair of jeans in your closet and add a few strategic holes yourself – this way, you won’t be upset when the trend disappears by next season. Harem Pants

Comfy, yes. Flattering, no. Bordering on ridiculous, possibly. The style that MC Hammer made popular is making a comeback for spring. Unless you want to add inches to your thighs, leave this trend on the rack. Pocket Harem Pant, $98 at freepeople.com

Jumpsuits

No doubt intended to simplify dressing by combining your top and bottom, the one-piece jumpsuit is far from a get-dressed no-brainer. Unless you’re a model or a risk-taking fashionista, it’s hard to look good in a jumpsuit. Skip this one-piece revival and opt for the ease of a dress instead. Boyfriend Jacket

Finally, an ’80s trend we can embrace! Long boxy jackets (thankfully, without the big shoulder pads) are this season’s newest silhouette. Whether you dig up an old jacket from your closet or invest in a new one, push up your sleeves and wear yours with skinny pants until the trend is passé once again.  Topstitched Wool Boyfriend Jacket, $229 at bebe.com

No matter what anyone tells you (even if you tell it to yourself), never believe that a “style icon” is anything but a woman with bad (BAD) style who oozes confidence. That confidence has the power to transform even that puerile pink tutu into something chic and cosmopolitan. Alas, genuine confidence like that is so rare that, more often than not, it is misinterpreted as a blood-curdling scream for attention, when in fact it is a bold determination to play “dress up” well into adulthood.

In New York, there’s simply too many fashion “statements” going on that it hardly leaves an impression on anyone, except perhaps on the fashionista themselves…in the form of a wedgie (American Apparel leotards, anyone?).

So when that moment comes when the clock is ticking and the city beckons…and you are trying to adopt New York style (even though you can’t get rid of those Birkenstocks or Girbaud jeans) there is but one piece of advice I will pass along to you. From the wise words of Coco Chanel, “A style does not go out of style as long as it adapts itself to its period.”

Chanel, the credited inventor of the “little black dress” has never gone out of style. Nonetheless, the notion that style evolves with time remains true. Even the little black dress has evolved.

Today’s little black dress is the big white t-shirt. This look is intended to come across extremely blasé as if to say “I’m so hot, I don’t even have to try.” While the little black dress was last century’s look— elegance; today’s big white tee is this century’s look—just rolled out of bed. In this case, the shirt is supposed to appear like you just rolled out of your boyfriend’s bed (and into his clothes). Beware of making this fashion “understatement” with your boyfriend’s actual undershirts…armpit stains are simply never in style.

Naturally, the man’s undershirt is a look that can be spiced up with absolutely any accessory. An oversized scarf, golden slinky chains, electric blue pumps—anything really, but not all at once, else you may ruin the style born of the woman who once so wisely said, “when finished accessorizing, always take off the last item you put on.” Looking edgy and classy at the same time is what a blank (supersoft cotton) canvas offers you.

If you want to be fashion forward, take a look backward. The present is inspired from the past. With the confidence of Miss Parker, the attitude of Miss Chanel and the ultra-soft material of the Olsen Tee Shirt line (www.elizabethjames.us) you can take on the city like you’re Miss Behavior.

Matching clothing is NOT as difficult as people make it seem. In fact, one of your best friends when it comes to matching clothing is someone you met way back in fourth grade: the color wheel.

Take a good look at this guy. He wants to be your friend. He wants to make you look nice. He wants to help you score that date or nail that job interview, he really does. Now all you need to do is listen to him.

Colors right next to each other on the color wheel are always a sure bet. I like to wear the slightly darker color on the bottom and the lighter color on top, but that’s totally up to you. Black and white will also readily hook-up with any color you throw at them (and wearing black makes you look slimmer, so it’s a double-win).

Remember complimentary colors? Those are colors that are directly across from each other on the color wheel. Note that this does NOT mean that your dayglo orange shirt would go perfectly with your dark blue pants. Really, you’ll just make yourself look like a Mets fan. Use your eyes and your common sense when matching complimentary colors, and keep the brighter color muted. Sometimes for brighter colors, it’s best to use the complimentary color as an accent, like wearing a purple headband with your yellow shirt and orange skirt.

Finally, there’s the territory of patterns, a sensitive matching issue at best. What a lot of people seem to think is that when you’re wearing something with a pattern with many colors, you should try to match all of them. And that’s probably the dumbest move you can make, because then you’ll look like you just had a head-on collision with a rainbow and an oil spill. Pick one color and match everything else with it, varying the shades for a bit of an effect. I like to pick the color that happens the least in a pattern, because then it evens it out a bit.

These are the rules that I usually go by, and they’ve helped me…for the most part. I struggle here and there and I have occasional days where I could really care less. But if I’ve only been dressing myself for five years and I can learn it, you can too. Trust me on this one.

Alright, so…..first was the return of the fanny pack. So unfortunate.But now, it’s SHOULDER PADS???

I thought these pointed, puffy creatures were dead for good. Guess not, cause runways everywhere are showing them, i.e. Style.com’s slide show revealing Shoulder Pad Fashion from top designers such as Dior and Gucci. Come on guys, really?

Ugh. My mom used to make me wear blazers with shoulder pads sewn into them when I was, like, eight, and I’d rip those suckers out ASAP.

Don’t they eerily resemble silicone boob implants?

To reiterate, according to the Seattle Times, one blogger points out the trends we can look forward to this fall:

* Polished, ’80s-inspired suits; strong shoulders and nipped waists.

* Controlled volume: Rounded and oval shapes; plenty of pleating.

Hmmm, would you like some pleats to go with your pads? Um, yes please! I guess what it all comes down to is that trends really do come back in cycles. We will never escape the fanny pack OR shoulder pads OR pleated pants, and this we will just have to accept, look forward to them going out of style again, and then expect their eventual, inevitable and evil return.

Which makes me wonder…..now that they’ve finally faded into “so last summer,” will our children be subjected to these?
