When I heard that Katherine Heigl wants to return to Grey’s Anatomy, I first laughed then said, “that’s really, still on?” I could have sworn it was over at least two years ago. I started looking into it and it turns out there are a ton of shows that are worthy of this same comment. These shows either deserve to be on this list because they have just been around for so long, or they’ve been around for too long. I mean really, producers need to realize when their show is past its prime and stop trying to drag it along.

Surprise, surprise: Thursday’s season five premiere of Jersey Shore collected a million viewers less than the first episode of last season, when the cast was in Italy. Some people argue that they’re sick of watching these same eight people, I argue that there’s too many extraneous characters to keep track of, especially if you’ve just tuned in…seriously, everyone looks incredibly similar!

Don’t worry, this will clear everything up. Meet all the extra people that keep stealing the airtime away from Sammi Sweetheart, The Situation, Snooki and the rest of the original cast. Once viewers are all up to speed, these guidettes and gorillas will remain on the air as long as the Kardashians do!

Attention all guidos and guidettes: Jersey Shore is back! And even if we hate to admit it, us non-Jersey folk are just as excited. Snooki, Sammi, Vinny and the rest of the gang are back on the air January 5th with the premiere of their fifth season (which boggles my mind). Now, I know some of you are probably rolling your eyes and writing me off as a valuable source for entertainment recommendations, but hear me out! Jersey Shore may not have any intellectual value, but it is extremely entertaining. And if anything, you can watch these people get drunk at the shore and make complete fools of themselves and feel better about your own life! Yay!

It’s hard to believe they are already on their fifth season, but people (myself included) will definitely tune in to watch. If you’re still not convinced that this show is worth an hour of your time, allow me list some reasons why it is.

The premise was sketchy. The plotline was ill conceived, and the acting was terrible. But there was a snarky heroine and the beginnings of a love triangle…and lots of unnecessary drama. Needless to say, I was hooked.

Ever since, I have been a loyal — albeit, skeptical — ABC Family viewer. Sure there were some shows I skipped. (I mean did anyone actually watch Kyle XY? ) Somehow I never did get the Secret Life bug, and I never watched that one about gymnastics. But for the most part I’ve reveled not only in their oh-so-cheesy, made-for-TV movies (Mario Lopez Holiday in Handcuffs was cute okay?), but their hour long dramas, too. Greek will forever be one of my favorite ABC family shows. And yes, I did watch Wildfire all the way through. I was a loyal viewer of the TV version of 10 Things I Hate About You, despite the horrific pilot and now I DVR Pretty Little Liars and The Lying Game every week without fail.

I love the drama and suspense that The Lying Game now brings to my Monday nights. I love the clothes and the cute boys and the never ending questions (Who is A? Someone please tell me!) that the little liars bring on Tuesdays. I loved the quirky cuteness of Greek and 10 Things. And I love that they continue to make really horrible Bring It On sequels.

But do you want to know something else?

I hate that I love these shows. Hate it. Because, as I’ve mentioned, they’re really pretty terrible. The acting, with a few exceptions, is subpar, the plotlines make no sense (How can A really be everywhere?), and the lines can get pretty cheesy. So why can’t I stop tuning in? What makes me want to watch these shows? Is it the same thing that forces me to find Jersey Shore fascinating or is it the morbid fascination that draws me into really horrible Lifetime movies? (Yes. I did watch William & Kate and I’m only a little ashamed to admit it.) Maybe. Or maybe it’s just that it’s good TV. Not intelligent TV, or well made TV, but fun, entertaining, lighthearted, time killing, suspense building TV.

I’ll leave you gals to ponder that. Because, if you’ll excuse me, last week’s episode of The Lying Game, is calling my name.

Here’s something you probably never thought you’d see.

PopEater has spotted Heidi Montag, Jake Pavelka, and Danielle Staub filming together in Los Angeles. What were they filming? No one knows. Apparently details about this production are “being kept under wraps.”

But that doesn’t mean we can’t make a few guesses, does it? Come on, let’s think. What do these “stars” all have in common? They’re reality TV cast offs. They’re hated. They’re really, really desperate to be famous. And well, that’s about it. Unless Jake Pavelka is secretly a woman. (Which actually wouldn’t be all that surprising with all the crying he did on The Bachelor…)

So let’s see… is this a support group for the most hated group in America? A new show for wannabe reality stars? A who’s the biggest biatch star showdown? Or are they going the whole From Justin to Kelly route and making a movie now that the reality TV well has dried up? Can’t you just see Jake as the leading man caught between a blonde and a brunette? Oh, wait…yes, you probably can since that’s exactly what he was doing on The Bachelor. But here’s the more important question…how does Spencer feel about Heidi potentially playing the role of Jake’s love interest?

Sigh. So many options. So many quip comments. I just don’t know which to choose. I’m just going to have to leave it up to you ladies. Give me your best guesses in the comments below. And click here to see the full story.

I was barely absorbing one of Elizabeth’s crazy threats before she was off and dishing out another.  My eyes couldn’t get enough of Jesse B.’s gorgeous bod.  Was Weatherman actually funny on a few occasions!?  I love it all!

While I’m still processing most of the finer plot points (and accepting Chris Harrison’s new casual attire), I’ve selected my favorite, most anticipated duos of the season:

Kiptyn and Tenley
We already know it’s going to happen, but come on – are they not the most family friendly couple of all time?  He’s a serial volunteer and she’s a real-life, rainbow-sh*tting Disney character.  I’m dying to see if these two progress beyond G-Rated hand holding.

Weatherman and Craig
Will these two ever kiss and make up?  Craig pretty much proved that he’s even more insecure and awkward than his cumulus cloud-loving counterpart.  Something makes me think that Weatherman is going into this show having an upper hand with the ladies.  Maybe he’ll finally get his first kiss!

Craig and Elizabeth
Elizabeth just wants Craig to guard and protect her heart win her over.  I’m placing my bet right now for the most over-used phrase of the season.  So long as Crazy Elizabeth and Craig are both on the show, she’ll be begging him to win her sorry butt over.  She’s a total nutcase!

Wes and Gia
Another rumor I’m afraid will be proven true.  I love Gia.  Like love, love, love her.  And Wes…gross!  I guess he’s kinda sorta less of a jerk on The BP…and at least homeboy didn’t bring along his guitar.  Gia, I’m trusting your gut here.  (Can you tell I’m trying to look on the bright side?  Someone help me like this guy, please.)

How many of you guys tuned in and became obsessed with this instant-classic?  (And by “instant classic” I mean the biggest hot-mess that has ever aired over your TV.)  Shout out and let me know what you’re most excited for – be it the inevitable breakdowns, the beer tears, or the claws out catfights.  I, for one, cannot wait for next week’s episode.  Until then, weigh in below!

While flipping through the channels last night during primetime, I discovered the real reason why our favorite shows go off the air during the summer: to make way for the sh*tshow that is summer television, which leaves us begging for The Office and House come September.

It’s the perfect advertising strategy: cut off the supply of good shows, and the viewers will demand that the season premiere of Grey’s Anatomy be moved up several weeks. But it’s absolute torture for the rest of us.

That is not to say all summer TV is bad. True Blood and Mad Men are perhaps two of the greatest shows on television, period, despite the fact that they premiere during the summer. But take a look the other night’s TV listings, and you’ll want to cringe along with me: America’s Got Talent, Big Brother, More To Love? Nothing even halfway decent to watch!

My DVDs are the only things keeping me going. When I find that there’s just nothing good on TV, I’ll pop one of my favorite shows in the DVD player and pretend it’s fall sweeps. Of course, maintaining the same level of interest and excitement becomes difficult after a while, especially since I’ve watched the third season of Gilmore Girls so many times that I can recite it all the way through. But when the reality shows start gearing up in the evening, I need something else to escape to.

So I spend my evenings researching when my favorite shows will return. Here’s what I’ve got so far.

Life isn’t black and white. As much as we wish we simply loved or hated things, there is often that whole annoying gray area in the middle. Like how we love the idea of a monokini, but we just don’t know if we can pull it off. Or how we love making money babysitting, but hate giving up a Saturday night. Damn you, gray area; you make decision-making that much more complicated!]

Anyone who knows me knows not to call on Tuesday nights. Not only is it Biggest Loser night, but it also happens to be the best night of my week because of one thing only: The Real Housewives. I don’t care if they are from Orange County, Hot-lanta or New York, I can’t get enough of these women.

Yet now that The Real Housewives of New Jersey are on the (polluted) horizon, I’m starting to feel a little confused inside about my love for couture catfights and $16,000 handbags.

Yes, ladies, I’m torn. It’s time to break it all down.

Love It:
Rich women doing fabulous things and talking about one another behind everyone’s backs? It’s like my dream life. I’m really good at the sh*t talking, but I’m seriously lacking in the Chanel bags and Louboutin heels, so it’s nice to live out my dreams through a Bravo TV show. And the drama, while totally blown out of proportion, is just so addicting. Whoever casts this show did a fantastic job of bringing far too many Type A women into one social circle, ultimately leading to many a manicured claw fights.

And could there be anything more entertaining than watching Evil Vicki trip and fall down a stair? Or Nay Nay making fun of her tranny bff, Kim? Or Bethenny (attempting to) open a can of ‘tude on Kelly Bensimon? Short answer: no. There is nothing better. Because drama in your social circle is never fun, but watching rich women drown themselves in it is the best thing since $5 footlongs at Subway.

Loathe It:
I like to think that I’m sorta smart, so I’m embarrassed to not only watch this show, but be totally addicted to it. And know every last detail. Including what kind of heels Jill’s daughter wanted to pack for her summer abroad. (Marc Jacobs. Pathetic, I know.)

Shouldn’t I be watching documentaries on Discovery Channel, or some weird show on TLC? And should I really be contributing to the further success of these rich-tards? With the exception of a few (Bethenny, for sure), these women contribute nothing to society except a few photos for Page 6 and a reason for my mother to call me at 9am on a Saturday to discuss the episode she just watched on her DVR.

We should be giving our attention to people who actually impact our world in a positive way, instead of these useless women who do nothing but lunch and shop and bitch. And then wake up the next day to do it all again. Yes, some of them work, but many of them just marry rich and set an example that money and wealth is the key to happiness. Is that true? Maybe. But is that realistic? Hell no.

And I can’t ignore the fact that this show takes my blood pressure to unhealthy levels. Without fail I end up on my feet (thus dumping my evening snack of dry Kashi Go Lean! all over my floor) yelling at the TV. These women are ridiculous and I can’t handle watching them say and do the dumbest sh*t! And now my snack is on the floor! And now I’m angry at myself because I care so much about this! And now I have to pause it so I can clean up the mess I just made.

Roar!

I know that it’s just a show and I should enjoy it if I want to, but watching this show gives these women power and success they really do not deserve. Is my guilty pleasure really worth elevating these label whores to a higher level, wasting precious cereal and potentially giving me wrinkles?

I just don’t know. I’m totally torn!

The Nielson Company’s “Three Screen Report” is now saying that the average American is watching 151 hours of television a month, or about 5 hours a day. Couch potatoes everywhere are uniting around the remote to enjoy hours and hours of mindless, inexpensive fun. It’s so easy to get sucked in, so this increase is no surprise to me: just flick on the screen, flip through a couple channels and you are set for the night (or almost a third of your day, apparently).

But what boggles my mind is not the amount of TV we are watching, but the quality. Have you turned on your TV lately? Oh, wait – of course you have. For at least 5 hours a day. 90% of the stuff on there is mind numbing or trashy crap. Even I am embarassed by the dribble that’s currently clogging my DVR.

Knowing that people are spending more time watching any of these 10 horrid TV shows makes me nervous. With this stuff taking over our lives, our country is in for some (more) real problems.
