I’ll admit it: I’m an addict. It’s a horrible habit that, after so many years, I just can’t kick. It’s available, it’s affordable and, hey, it makes me feel good about myself. And even though it’s probably damaging for me in the long run, I just can’t stop.

Yeah, I’m a consumer of the Kardashian culture. I watch the shows (the originals, the spin-offs and Dancing With The Stars when one is competing), I read the interviews, I follow the obnoxious tweets. And recently, people like Daniel Craig, Jonah Hill and Barbara Walters are calling me out on my fascination with the most overexposed and yet untalented people on television, the Kardashians. I jumped on the family bandwagon relatively late, actually. I initially denied the attraction to what Barbara Walters referred to as “a strange mix of trashy sex, upscale excess, tabloid melodrama and suburban family life” — though the balance of these ingredients varies with each episode, depending on which siblings are in them. But when Lamar Odom proposed, Reggie Bush called it quits, and Mason was born, my interest was officially peaked for some reason. I was suddenly intrigued by these people who are so famous, and for the life of me, I seriously could not remember why.

Is it really because the late Robert Kardashian was OJ Simpson’s lawyer and friend? Because Bruce Jenner is an esteemed Olympian? Because Kim Kardashian was partying with Paris Hilton during her heyday and recording her sex-capades with Ray J — Brandy’s brother? I guess that by putting all of those famous-by-association factors together, and adding Kris Jenner as a manager and Ryan Seacrest as a producer, these people are worth watching. Over and over again. Why?!?

Daniel Craig of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo and Casino Royale doesn’t understand it either. ”Look at the Kardashians, they’re worth millions. Millions!” he told British GQ in their January 2012 issue. “I don’t think they were that badly off to begin with, but now look at them. You see that and you think, ‘What, you mean all I have to do is behave like a f*cking idiot on television and then you’ll pay me millions?‘”

Jonah Hill — who, in Superbad and Get Him To The Greek, often acts like an idiot (with the exception of Moneyball) — feels the same way, but for different reasons: he actually watches the shows. He openly admitted that he felt duped when Kim Kardashian announced her plans to divorce Kris Humphries because, like so many of us, he bought into that gaudy and god awful wedding display. He ranted to The Huffington Post about the infamous family earlier this week:

“I have friends who work in TV and the Kardashians get higher ratings than their TV shows. Shows that people actually work hard on — writing and creating and trying to tell stories. The fact that the Kardashians could be more popular than a show like ‘Mad Men’ is disgusting. (Laughs) It’s a super disgusting part of our culture, but I still find it funny to make a joke about it. Whenever I say I like reality TV, people write about it like they’re in shock. I can’t even understand it, so I watch it. I think it’s funny and I definitely enjoy it in a making-fun-of-it sort of way, but where does the line sort of end? When do I stop making fun of it and become an actual fan?“

I personally don’t know. I’m confused about it all. And I’ve often wondered if they actually see it all as “working” when they punch mirrors, wax each other’s vaginas, lose $75,000 earrings while swimming in Bora Bora and then conveniently find them again once the cameras are pointing another way. Seriously, such scheming takes skills!

So finally, after ranking the Kardashian family as a whole one of the 10 Most Fascinating People of 2011, Barbara Walters sat down with Kourtney, Kim, Khloe and mother Kris, and asked them flat out: “You don’t really act; you don’t sing; you don’t dance…you don’t have any — forgive me — any talent!”

And then Khloe, the voice of reason within that crazy clan, revealed the truth that no one wanted to actually acknowledge: “We’re still entertaining people…None of us think we have talent. None of us think we can sing or act or dance.”

But they do call themselves businesswomen. They’re spokespeople, fashion buyers, “perfumistas” even…and now they have a store at The Mirage Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas called Kardashian Khaos that sells anything and everything with their names and faces on them. Shockingly, it’s not full of cricket sounds; paying customers are lining up to actually buy their licensed merchandise. Maybe they’re Midwestern Americans looking for a souvenir of Los Angeles celebrity lifestyle; maybe they’re foreigners stocking up on pieces of American culture. Because no matter how you look at it, or whether you’ve been looking away all this time, this random family is famous for being famous, and they’re now forever part of American pop culture.

“I think it’s more of a challenge for you to go on a reality show, and get people to fall in love with you for being you,” Kim said to Barbara Walters. But Kris Humphries filed for an annulment on account of fraud, and he’s got some pretty good grounds…who says you’re even really being “you” at all??!?

After hearing criticisms from Daniel Craig, Jonah Hill and Barbara Walters, I’m kicking my addiction; but I’m only continuing to watch to find out if they’re all for real. From watching the preview, I think that the next episode will be pretty revealing of their true character, right? Plus, it looks kinda funny.

But she also chose some really random people who aren’t as fascinating as they are annoying. The Kardashians? Herman Cain? Really, Barbara Walters? Those people are so random.

The Pregnant Man – Thomas Beattie became the sensation of the world in April when he appeared on Oprah to defend his choice to have a child as a transgendered man. Sticking up for your beliefs? Awesome, and definitely commendable. Eventually turning into a fame slut and marketing out your second pregnancy? Not cool. “Reality” Dating Shows - Now that Flavor Flav has finally hung up his clock and gone off the air, there are about thirty shows taking his place, and they’re spreading like cockroaches. Tila Tequila, the ‘Ikki Twins,’ and others are taking over Vh1 and MTV mercilessly, swamping our televisions with drunken fights (actually funny to watch), and pointless drama. Who makes their boyfriends/girlfriends eat nasty pig parts and do bizarre things in the name of love? These loveless actors do. Some dating shows range from the creepy (Date My Mom) to the outright postmortem (The Bachelor), but either way, they all need to go.

Political Ignorance/Apathy – In the year of the historical election, political action was awesome and political apathy was absolutely the anti-cool. The worst of the worse were the nonpartisans who were both apathetic and uneducated about the election. Their “why should I bother to vote” statements were both inhibiting to the democratic tradition and simply irritating. Guaranteed to piss off people who were voting, the ‘Not Voting’ demographic drew on fallacies and the platforms that they didn’t really understand to prove why they weren’t going to vote. The election was basically a two horse race, but there were still other entries available as an alternate, so not voting at all was just not cool.

Guys in Girl Jeans – It’s creepy. It’s weird. It’s a guy shopping in the same section as you in PacSun. As you put down the pair of sunglasses you were looking at and openly stare, you realize he’s not just shopping for a shirt to give to his girlfriend. He’s holding three pairs of jeans in his hand, and there’s no girlfriend in sight. As you watch, he takes the jeans and starts walking to the dressing rooms. You are not witnessing a confused shopper. You’re witnessing the Girl Jean Phenomenon, a plague of 2008 pop culture, and a trend that needs to die on December 31st. Guys wearing our jeans is not cool or edgy. It’s just lame and, now, overplayed.

Saturday Night Live – Is it still going? It’s been in the process of becoming painfully unfunny in the years since Will Ferrell left, and now with the exit of Amy Poehler, we just need to euthanize it. A classic sketch show that began in 1975 with genuinely funny people, SNL has run over six hundred episodes of pure comedic bliss continuously for thirty-three years. As with all great series, though, the time has come to put SNL out of its misery before it becomes the kind of joke it used to make.

Churning Out Tween Pop Stars By The Dozen – If child enslavement was defined as being manufactured on a kids’ show and being shoved on the masses, Disney and Nickelodeon would be doing massive amounts of time in jail. The list of sugary sweet music artists includes, but definitely is not limited to The Jonas Brothers, Hannah Montana, Demi What’s-Her-Name, That Miranda Kid, and a host of others, few if any of whom have actual talent. But you wouldn’t know, because should you approach any method of media that is playing a song by them, you’ll be deafened instantly and hopelessly by the cacophony of shrieking that erupts. The Original Disney Channel Star, Hilary Duff, unfortunately started it all when she split from Disney in 2004 to pursue a solo career (which caused a big fuss, if I remember right). She was an original, at least for the Disney Channel. These cookie cutter kids? About as generic as it gets.

In honor of the eight days of Hanukkah, we decided to do a tribute to our 8 favorite Hanukkah celebrators (also known as Jews). But then we decided that 8 just wasn’t enough; there are too many good ones! So, we upped it to eight Jews for each of the eight days.

Yes, it’s a lot of Jewish, but let’s be real – Hanukkah gets totally ignored this time of year, so we thought it would be nice to give a little shout-out to the people not dreaming of a white Christmas. According to Hollyscoop.com (and tons of other sites on the web today) Elisabeth Hasselbeck, the one reigning Republican on The View is getting wicked pissed that all the other loud-talking ladies on her show are always going after to her when it comes to politics.

It seems like Barbara Walters is even planning a “cool down meeting” to keep little Hasselbeck from jumping ship and heading over to Fox News.

I don’t really watch The View, but I can only imagine what it would be like to have Whoopie, Joy, that other lady, and Barbara Walters jumping down your throat every day. However, to be fair, whenever I turn the show on by accident, Hasselbeck is usually talking awfully loud about something that isn’t interesting.

So Josh Hartnett has a sex tape. God heard our prayers! What we wouldn’t give to see that thing…in IMAX. [Wipes drool off of desk.] Knowing this (and praying that we can one day watch it) got us thinking: what does one eat while watching a sex tape? Popcorn? Edible underwear?

Also, who else would we want to see starring in their very own sex tape?

The View has finally announced that Whoopi Goldberg will be joining the daily gab-fest.Goldberg is set to stat the day after Labor Day. And apparently, Barbara Walters is still looking for a 5th host (Hey Babs- I am totally available!)

I must say, the first fifteen minutes of The View is always entertaining. Watching “Hot Topics” is like fast-forwarding a scene at my sorority house kitchen table to twenty-five years from now. Gossiping about stars, shouting over each other to be heard and not really caring (or listening to) what the other girls at the table have to say. It is great to know not much will change in my life between now and the year 2030 (and thanks to Botox, really, nothing will change!)

Whoopi should be a fabulous addition- she is funny and smart, yet not overpowering. And she won’t spend her face-time trying to convert the entire daytime viewing audience to believe in everything she does (ahem, Rosie) or go on and on about her wedding plans.

Both Rosie and Star have been quoted as saying they are very happy that Ms. Goldberg has been chosen.

It was rumored that Kathy Griffin was a possible contender, but now insiders are saying that’s not the case…

There’s just something about Regis Philbin, his demeanor, the look in his eye, the way he hunches over his high risen stool and leans into camera, peering relentlessly into the eyes of millions of American housewives and grandmothers. In truth, I can’t help but dislike him as Kelly Rippa chirps solemnly around set, over gesticulating her way into the stuff of a morning show legend. In the chair where Kathy Lee Gifford would ultimately rise and fall, how quickly we forget success when failure interferes with commercial advertising.

This is what daytime television is made of, predetermined banter spiked with personal ambiguity hidden behind the confides of little blue index cards. These types of hosts thrive mostly on conformity and the pleasing of the masses. Mostly they steer away from subversion preferring never to rock the boat. They are the “Murdoch worshipers”, living to please the peacock, look into the CBS eye and learn their ABC’s while minding their P‘s and Q‘s. These are “the Grains” of America‘s food pyramid. You should eat six ounces a day with at least half of them whole. Grains are the basis of a healthy diet. This may come as a surprise to you after years of being told to stay away from foods such as breads, rice, and cereal.

Though every host is in a sense looking to keep his or her position and maintain a relationship with a network it seems that there are a few using their timeslots as a platform to voice opinions, provide insight and increase social change. Oprah Winfrey for example changed the face of television by using her power to form a movement. Making a sincere effort to challenge the way Americans think and feel about the state of the world. Her book club increased literacy in America, her charities have save millions of lives, and her Angel Network has provided educational opportunities that were otherwise impossible for young students simply by collecting a country’s spare change.

Rosie O’Donnell has also made her mark on television history by not only appearing in her first successful long running talk show but by becoming the moderator of ABC’s “The View”. O’Donnell was unafraid to voice opinions that are for all intent purposes condemned by the higher-ups, recently stating that there are four corporations that control the media of the world and “this is one of them” (meaning ABC), encouraging viewers to find their own stance and reject political propaganda. Her appearances on The View have caused quite a bit of controversy, even causing right wing conservative and resident air head Elizabeth Hasselbeck to break down into tears while rocking back and forth on the lap of Barbara Walters like a spoiled child. This Murdoch worshiper is a favorite of Fox news and a public advocate of not only the war in Iraq, but the horrific torture techniques used by American soldiers in Abu Ghraib. Her wispy blonde locks toss from side to side as her leopard stilettos tap against the fake living room set, clenching her teeth as O’Donnell spouts her views on 9/11 conspiracy theories and the evils of George Bush. Seemingly set up, she appears to be placed there to tame the “fringe liberals” she so avidly despises and often labels unpatriotic. The final blow out was a You Tube favorite, spreading like wildfire through blogosphere. Ultimately, O’Donnell left the high rated show unable to stomach Hasselbeck’s robotic stare and passionate ignorance. O’Donnell and Winfrey would be considered “The Vegetables” in the television pyramid, whose required intake for a healthy diet has tripled over the past three years. Vegetables are an essential part of a healthy diet. But not all vegetables are created equal. They are important to vary and consume on a regular basis.

The FCC and Broadcasting corporations have infringed on a host’s civil rights in the case of “The Howard Stern Show”. The Bush administration in a return to conservative values had increased censorship on airwaves penalizing Stern for using offensive language by fining him millions for the very same phrases and form of comedy he had been using for twenty years. Pushing the envelope to another extreme the Stern Show actively opposed the Bush campaign influencing listeners to vote for the left, suddenly incurring service interruptions. This kind of right wing upper hand forced him into Satellite radio, a paid subscription service. Bill Maher of ABC’s “Politically Incorrect” could probably tell you that he saw it coming. After making a controversial comment in reference to the 9/11 terror attacks he was forced into HBO oblivion, a popular channel but minuscule in comparison to network television, leaving America wondering if our civil rights now come at a per month cost. Hosts like Bill Maher and Howard Stern fall into the fruit category, necessary for a healthy diet their requirements have also trippled in recent years. Fruit in your diet is necessary to Completely Detoxify Your Body (or mind in this case) this detoxification leads to the removal of all the toxins, wastes and poisonous compounds .

Bill O’Reilly, the love child of Fox News and what one can only imagine to be a robot created by Dick Cheney in a fit of republican rage, delivers his own personal opinions to the dismay of liberal Hollywood. He relentlessly attacks those of opposing points of viewpoints with answers for every argument that never seem to quite make any sense. For some reason O’Reilly has gone uninterrupted, free to voice his opinions which conveniently seem to coincide with our current administrations. Hosts like O’Rielly would be considered the meat and bean portion of our diet, necessary for protein. To achieve healthy cholesterol levels, you don’t have to avoid red (or white) meat entirely. However, you do have to find healthier alternatives. Eating too much of this food group can be dangerous to ones health, which is why some vegetarians or left wingers in this case find the best way to maintain health is to become a vegetarian.

These members of the pyramid are in some sense at war with each other. In a world where Ann Coulter is a name I know well enough to use in this article from morning show press, I wonder if what I have the chance to absorb from talk show hosts is just a controlled preconceived ideology provided by a larger power. One can only hope that Freedom of speech was not something lost while channel surfing and that hosts are able to use a steady network platform to rock the boat, increase political awareness, and encourage social change. In the meantime we always have Jerry Springer who incidentally is perfectly acceptable in the eyes of both right and left wing audiences, not to mention the independents or Rush Limbaugh. Guilty pleasures like Springer can only be classified as Oil, not an official food group but necessary in small portions.
