So obviously the buzz on all the fashion blogs and entertainment channels today is centered on the red carpet from last night’s Emmys. I must admit, I only tune in for the pre-show to see what all the celebs are wearing and to get the scoop on who was hot and who was totally not. Why waste three hours of “I’d like to thank God and the academy” when I can Google all that shiz the next day?

And the stars didn’t disappoint. As I sat curled up on my couch, the gowns had me drooling and dreaming of the day when I would someday find somewhere (anywhere!) to flaunt a flowing, sparkling evening dress. Sadly, as I stared down at my Easy-Mac-stained sweats, I realized that I won’t be wearing anything haute couture unless I marry Hollywood royalty or strike it big myself. Oh, and somehow fit into a size 00. None of which seem too promising.

So, here’s to dreaming big and living vicariously though the smoking hot women who graced the Emmy red carpet while I sat home with a 2 liter of Diet Coke and a bag of Baked Lays.

I die (AKA: our faves):

Christina Hendricks

It was so freakin’ refreshing to see a woman flaunting her curves. Way too often, the few starlets with real bodies are forced into hiding under a flowy baby-doll dress. But Hendricks radiated a sex appeal reminiscent of Marilyn Monroe with a body-hugging gown that accented her blessings up top and her hourglass figure. Not to mention that the deep purple couldn’t have complemented her ivory skin and red locks any better. She clocked in at the way opposite end of the scale from our fake tanned, too-thin tabloid queens. Can I get a hallelujah?

Leighton Meester and Blake Lively

The Gossip Girl’s have a very high standard to uphold; gracing our television screens every week in the chicest couture outfits on the market, we all expect them to be up there on the best dressed list for every award show. And they didn’t fail to “bring it” at the Emmys. Not only did they each look fabulous on their own, but they complemented each other perfectly as they presented the award for directing in a comedy series. Blake rocked a hot red number with a way-low plunging neckline, while Meester updated the classic Grecian look with unexpected layers and voluminous knotted shoulders. If only frat parties were more formal (and I didn’t totally fear someone spilling Jungle Juice on me). Sigh.

Lindsay Price

Bravo for some effortless, understated beauty. Price radiated on the red carpet, without screaming for attention. She donned a trendy one-shoulder dress, with a brooch’s worth of embellishment, and draping sheer layers of magenta. She totally worked the simplicity factor, with effortless hair and makeup and minimal jewelry. Not that she needs much; that girl is gorgeous and the dress only accentuated what she’s already working.

Kill Me (AKA: Kill me):
All those beautiful dresses would never look quite as good if there wasn’t something equally awful to compare them to. So, while many of the stars had us gaga eyed, here are the few that had me cringing. Were these ladies under the influence (of heavy drugs) when they got dressed?

Victoria Rowell

Seriously? We love Obama as much as the next liberal college girl, and we’re are all for women taking a stance on politics, but is your dress really the place to make a statement? And where did Ms. Rowell get this “dress”? A 4th of July picnic table? Earth to Rowell, he’s already in office; you can wear a normal freakin’ dress to the Emmy’s.

Sarah Silverman

We imagine this is how things went for Sarah and her stylists:
“Ok, guys, here’s the deal. I’m doing the Emmy Red Carpet thing. I know – huge, right? Ok, so let’s find a dress that totally washes out my pasty white skin and adds about 100 pounds to my frame. Oh, and the bigger the saddle bags the better! I’m thinking ’80′s prom meets Cinderella’s evil step-sisters.” Kthxbye.”

Padma Lakshmi

The host of Top Chef looks like she had a run in with a blender on her way to the Emmys, with shredded straps and a mangled mass of roses on her hip. If I were Badgley Mischka I would be extremely embarrassed that I sent someone to the Emmy’s looking like they had stopped by Wal-Mart to pick up a dress, then swung by a craft store for a few silk flowers to “spiff things up” a bit.  Oh, and bravo (no pun intended) for making the skinniest girl in Hollywood look like she tasted a few too many Quick Fires.

While the stars strut their stuff down the red carpet in haute couture dresses, we’re resting comfortably in our bed wearing nothing but an old t-shirt and a pair of VS undies shoving Pad Thai in our face. Because nothing goes better with an award show than drowning our fashion-envy sorrows in a bowl of greasy noodles.

We’ve got two full hours of designer goodness (and – fingers crossed – total disaster) coming our way, so let’s get to the show!

6:15 PM: College Humor was dead-on with that Entourage sketch. I need some of the Piv on the red carpet asap.

6:18 PM: It’s CC’s boyfriend! Jason Segal! Not loving the hair. Did Ryan Seacrest just suggest he was going into his man cave? What? Back off Seacrest!

6:20 PM: Seth Macfarlene just dropped an F-bomb. Olivia Wilde is good looking and dressed like the 10 she is. Nene is giving sass. Everything is perfect… wait… did I really forget to buy ice cream for tonight?

6:25 PM: Christina Applegate, not a fan of that dress. Or the hair. Worlds of wrong.

6:30 PM: Alyson Hannigan! I love! Aaaand now she’s talking about breast feeding. Enough with the babies, celebrities. Mariska Hargitay is also looking phenom.

6:31 PM: Oh my god! it’s Pam (Jenna Fischer). She actually cleans up nice, blah blah, nothing new there.

6:35 PM: Tracy Morgan please be the Kanye of tonight. 22 nominations for 30 Rock but they’re going home with 26. Ew, Nene is hitting on Tracy. This is getting a little to graphic for me.

6:38 PM: Turtle, dump Jamie. Date me. Aw, okay they’re actually cute. Jeff Probst just threatened to “pull a Kanye.” Like what’s he gonna do? “Listen Ryan, I’m real happy for you and I’mma let you finish but DUNKLEMAN was the best host of American Idol of all time!”

6:50 PM:I spotted David Boreanaz. I love. Is it just me or does everyone look kinda plain? I want some wild fashion! Oh, apparently Mr. Jay agrees. Not fierce. Sandra Oh creeps me out. Am I alone in this?

6:52: I’m so over Twilight and all these new sparkly vampires. And this unfunny sketch. Is it wrong that I’m looking more forward to the new episode of Khloe and Kourtney than the actual Emmy’s?

6:55 PM: Amy Pohler, coolest mommy ever. I really like Katrina Bowden’s dress! Rainn Wilson, creepy.

7:00 PM: Vanessa Williams has some fantastic knockers. Her doorknocker earrings, people.

7:05 PM: Kate Walsh looks incredible! Favorite dress thus far. Props for the Aldo clutch and the Vuitton shoes. Nene says she’s, “not impressed” with anyone and hasn’t seen the “bam!” Mr. Jay is loving on Sandra Oh. Something about Sandra just unsettles me. ALEC BALDWIN AHHHH I SEE HIM!

7:10 PM: Stephen Moyer just did the “stiletto cam.” Hot. Nene just told Mr. Jay, “Black girls are not into the vampires, hunny.” She is all full of attitude tonight.

7:15 PM: Lonely Island is all kinds of precious. I feel that Giuliana and Ryan have mentioned Megan Fox on SNL quite a few times. I feel she’ll do a great job looking ridiculously good while not being funny.

7:20 PM: Time to order the Pad Thai. This order’s dedicated to you Ellen Pompeo.

7:25 PM: Jimmy Fallon, I miss you. Leighton’s dress is not good. Did she miss the “no white after Labor Day” memo?

7:27 PM: Of course Marci Klein looks fabulous, she’s Calvin Klein’s daughter. Gotta love this 30 Rock fam. I’m getting really tired of this “pull a Kanye” nonsense. Not.

7:30 PM: John Krasinski is looking so fox. Holy jeez, he’s tall! He’s like twice the size of Seacrest.

7:31 PM: Stewie just dissed Giuliana Rancic. Then Seacrest just dissed Giuliana for doing a Stewie Griffin bit. Ahhh the tension is high, actors are drunk and Leighton looks like a cotton ball.

7:35 PM: Ugh, Blake Lively. Your hair is wack, your dress is scandal and I want to be you.

7:37 PM: And the award for Blandest Couple of the Year goes to… Jennifer Love Hewitt and Jamie Kennedy!

8:00 PM: Red carpet… OVER! Time for the actual show!

Remember the Golden Globes last year? Yeah, me either. But maybe that’s because there weren’t any. There was a little thing going on called the writers’ strike, which kept me watching awful reality TV all year and prevented the Hollywood actors from attending the awards show.

Thank God that’s all cleared up.

Bring on the Red Carpet! Oh…and the actual show.

The awards start at 8pm EST (and will probably last until 1am with all those boring montages, speeches and fake awards), but the good stuff pre-show starts at 6. And that’s what we’ll be watching, hoping and praying for something scandalous: a nipple slip? A drunken stumble? An Amy Winehouse appearance?

Who are we kidding? Pretty sure the most exciting thing we’ll see is someone wearing white after Labor Day (Oh the horror!). But we’ll watch anyway, and report back on the good and the bad tomorrow morning.

For the last few months, every Monday I’ve highlighted a star who I believe epitomizes style, whether because she takes risks and sets trends, or because she puts together simple ensembles that perfectly highlight her assets. In honor of the new year, I thought we should take a trip down fashion memory lane and see some of 2008′s best dressed stars. These ladies are all style icons of our time for different reasons and I’d jump at the opportunity to invade their closets any day. 1. Anne Hathaway:

Anne’s a new one on best dressed lists this year; in the past she was never really a stand out when it came to fashion/style, but ever since her break up with that loser bf of hers, she’s been shining as bright as can be. Anne makes fashion choices that are edgy yet classic and the gir knows how to play up her beauty. She’s been a great example for women all over the globe that you can come out of a bad relationship better than before, and for that alone she gets major props.

2. Rihanna:

Rihanna is probably the edgiest star on my list. She has a style that’s all her own and she owns it. Even her edgy hair cut has been an inspiration this year. She wears bright colors, interesting cuts, and always looks smokin’. There’s a reason Rihanna was the first person I chose to be a Style Idol; she tells young women that it’s possible to play up your personal, unique style, to make it look fabulous and to have fun doing it.

3. Leighton Meester:

Leighton is another new comer on the fashion scene, but she’s come in with a bang. Known for her preppy Upper East Side look on Gossip Girl, on the red carpet and out & about, Leighton has a fun, flirty style that utilizes classic designers but puts a young & modern twist on their classic styles. Leighton is a gorgeous gal who knows just how to play up her fresh-faced good looks and her beautiful body.

4. Michelle Obama:

This has been a huge year for politics and for the Obamas and Michelle Obama has been in the epicenter of that, not only for her devotion to her family and her husband’s campaign and her calm and cool demeanor, but also for her keen fashion sense. She’s been touted as the Jackie O of our generation and what she plans to wear on inauguration night is the talk of the town. There is no denying that she consistently looks put-together and stylish, but also professional and well-suited to be the President’s wife. She’s also won praise for the fact that many of her fashion choices are in an affordable price range and easily accessible to the average American woman. I must admit that I, too, am eager to see what she dons on January 20th.

5. Heidi Klum:

Last but not least is Heidi Klum. Though she hasn’t been on my Style Idol list (yet), she is constantly photographed looking absolutely gorgeous and glam. Heidi not only has an amazing body for anyone, let alone a mom of 3 (!), she’s got a look about her that is stunning, but has a girl-next-door air that still makes her likable; she is the woman women want to be. She comes across as fun and funny, yet she always looks polished and stylish. It’s no wonder she hosts one of the top fashion shows on television; her personal style, whether in jeans and a tank or a gorgeous John Galliano gown, is one us mere mortals can only hope to obtain.

Michelle Obama is already on her way as being one of the most influential First Ladies. She played a large role in Barack’s campaign and she looked damn good doin it. She will be joining a long line of beautiful, intelligent, and memorable First Ladies who have made just as much of an impact on U.S. history as their husbands.

But let’s be real…there a few first ladies who no one remembers cuz they did nothing but stand there and look pretty.

First Lady Stand-Outs

Lady Bird Johnson “Mrs. Social Butterlfly” -Lady Bird had it rough trying to fill Jackie O’s shoes, but she did a terrific job and everyone loved her. There was no one this First Lady wouldn’t schmooze; she was friendly with members of Congress and their wives, members of the president’s Cabinet and their wives, and foreign dignitaries. She partied in that White House like no other.

Rosalyn Carter- “Most Likely to Control Her Man”-Ever wonder how to keep your man wrapped around your little finger? Rosalyn Carter is an inspiration to ladies around the world. It is not a secret that Jimmy Carter consulted and sought the advice of his wife on nearly every important decision he made – she wore the pants in the relationship. Well done Rosalyn, well done.

Eleanor Roosevelt-“Most Likely to Make a Difference”- Always thought the First Lady didn’t do anything except “keep the president happy?” Well, Eleanor Roosevelt was a mover and a shaker. She fought for the poor, the rights of African Americans, migrant workers, and helped dissatisfied students. If it weren’t for her, we may be more unhappy than we currently are.

Jacqueline Kennedy -“Best Dressed”- There is no doubt that Jackie O is the most popular and well known First Lady of all time. We have to admit, fashion and great looks can take you extremely far in life. I know I’m still rocking those classic big frames. Mrs. Obama has even been compared to this fashionista being called Michelle O.

Hillary Clinton- “Most Likely to Rule to the World” – Okay, Hillary accomplished great things in the White House, like expanding peoples’ ideas about universal health care and family issues. But who can forget Bill and Monica’s big black dress incident? Apparently Hillary has selective memory or a lotta love. Regardless, she made history herself as one of the democratic front-runners for the presidency. She fought the good fight, and even though she didn’t make it all the way, she definitely made her mark.

Failing First Ladies

Ellen Wilson-“Most Likely to Not Make a Difference to Mankind, in any way…at all”- Ellen Wilson makes Laura Bush look like an over-achiever. “I am naturally the most unambitious of women,” is one of her more famous quotes that display her absolutely grotesque lethargy as a woman and as a person. Hopefully the Wilson’s had a great sex life, because if not for that – she would have been an ACTUAL physical waste of space in the White House.

Grace Coolidge- “Most Likely to Fight for the Spotlight (and win)”- There is nothing wrong with making yourself noticed, but when you actively compete with your husband for the national spotlight – that’s a little over the top. It is even worse when your name is Grace Coolidge, and your husband is the President. She became more worried about parties than she was politics, and her marriage suffered severely for it. She did not even know that he had decided not to seek re-election in 1928 until he announced it to the press.

Pat Nixon- “Most Fun at a White House Party”- Pat Nixon’s quoted goal in life was, “I just want to go down in history as the wife of the President.” Way to aim high! Despite being the first First Lady to earn a graduate degree, she went on to be a “good will ambassador” across the world, while rumors of her uncontrolled alcoholism became a distraction to the White House and the DC political scene.

Nancy Regan- “Most Likely to Drive People to Drug Use”- Nancy Regan is reknownd for her “Just Say No to Drugs” campaign. Ironically, drug use increased by 15% during her campaign. The innundation of her obnoxiously over-simplified yet condescending message led many to experiment in drugs that they normally would have passed on. Though it can’t be proven, we are fairly sure that crystal meth was invented by someone who heard ‘Just Say No’ one too many times.

Laura Bush-“Most Likely to Marry Well”- Laura Bush said, “The role of the First Lady is whatever the First Lady wants it to be,” and she wanted the First Lady to sit on her ass and do nothing. The Children’s Reading initiative that W used as the catalyst for the “No Child Left Behind” Act, has left more children behind than Michael Jackson’s last concert tour. Reading: good. Over-indulged Bush: bad.

[Celebrities get paid to look good and serve as a style guide to all us common folk, and part of looking good is flaunting their totally awesome fashion sense. Each week, I will be highlighting my Style Idol of the week: a celebrity who consistently shows keen fashion sense and whose closet I would raid in a heartbeat. Of course, no celebs are immune to the occasional “what the hell were they thinking?” moment, but for the most part, these celebs look foxy and fabulous and inspire us all to do the same.]

My favorite fashion-conscious celeb this week is Miss Leighton Meester. Since becoming a bonafide star after Gossip Girl came to the silver screen last fall, this girl can be seen all over the young Hollywood circuit consistently looking put-together and gorgeous.

I love how she puts young and modern spins on classics, and while she’ll vamp it up with short skirts or backless dresses, she never crosses the line into Slutville. Not only does she choose the right clothes for her personal style, coloring and body-type, she accessorizes fabulously well and knows how to mix & match appropriately.

She really showed off her stuff during Fashion Week in NYC two weeks ago and proved that she’s one of Hollywood’s best dressed. If I had access to her wardrobe, I think I might just die and go to heaven.
