Polygamy: because 4 wives is better for ratings than 19 kids.
As I was channel surfing the other day, I paused on TLC to watch an old episode of What Not To Wear. After countless “Umm… no”s, a few “I wish Clinton wasn’t gay”s, and too many moments in the painful-to-watch but wildly-entertaining 360° mirror, the show went to commercial. And before I had a chance to flip back to Teen Mom, across my screen flashed an ad for TLC’s newest reality show: Sister Wives, a show that rethinks “love, marriage, and reality family.”
Yes— if you just clicked on that link, what you saw was correct. TLC (what was formally known as The Learning Channel) will be teaching Americans all about a topic we are just dying to sink our teeth into: Polygamy. Dubbed by many as the real Big Love, the show follows Cody, his 3 wives, 13 kids, and newest fiancé as they all prepare for Cody’s fourth wedding.
Yeah, let that one marinate for a second.
And let us all come together with one big “WTF, TLC?!?”
I’ll be honest, I didn’t think it was possible for TLC to get any more messed up. Growing up, I used to watch A Wedding Story and A Baby Story, tears filling my eyes as I saw how a baby was born or what it took to pull off the perfect wedding. Nowadays, though, I legitimately cannot remember the last time TLC taught me much of anything….besides what it looks like for a happy marriage to go up in (Ed Hardy) flames or when a little person gets a DUI.
Which makes me wonder: what those TLC people are smoking goes on in the TLC boardroom? How do they come up with their stellar frightening TV line up? I don’t know for sure, but I have a feeling there are brownies (yeah, that kind), bean bag chairs and conversations that sound a little like this: Read More »

Every year, right around Father’s Day I always scramble around trying to find a unique, personalized, yet cheap gift idea to give to my pops. I window shop, Google, ask friends – everything! Yet year after year I come across the same old lame gift suggestions. I’d name a few, but I’m afraid some of you reading this may have already succumbed to these terrible, banal ideas… and I wouldn’t want to offend. Nevertheless, I am here to help!
Unlike the rest of the world, apparently, we here at CollegeCandy realize there are many more types of dads than just the golf-loving dad or techie dad that are often the only ones represented in the usual generic gift guides. And how do we know that? Because we see them on TV every week. If you’re looking for the best gift money can buy for the best dad out there…but have no idea what to get him because you spend more time with TV dads than you do with him, perhaps our handy little guide can help you.
Just pick the TV dad most like your real life dad and – bing, bang, boom – you’ve got yourself the perfect Father’s Day gift.

Who inspires your style? Or better question, WHAT inspires your style? Many of us use movie characters (like Penny Lane) or celebrities (like Leigh Lezark) as style inspiration, even though, most of the time, they are being dressed from head to toe by the best stylists. Which we don’t have. And sometimes it’s damn near impossible to work their Hollywood looks into our not-so-Hollywood lives. I’ve made it my mission to tap into the mind of a fashion stylist and show you how to take your style inspiration – whatever it may be – and make it more you!
Describing Chloe Sevigny’s style in one word would be like attempting to describe color to a blind man: Impossible.
She is a wild child with a wild style. It’s vintage-meets-designer, quirky, eccentric and European chic with just the perfect hint of grunge. It doesn’t sound like it would turn out well, but somehow Chloe works it. Not to mention that smirk she’s always sportin’ that says, “What I’m wearing right now is what you’re going to be wearing next month.” Only she’s not arrogant, which I totally would be if I had her ability to wear a potato sack and have a million people be inspired by it.
Although she works as an actress by day (most notably as the second wife on HBO’s series, Big Love) her newest job and eternal interest has always been related to fashion. It has apparently always come easy to her, considering she never actually follows trends but seems to instead set them. Read More »

I know I said that my summer reading list is all about being mindless, but this week I was craving something substantial. So, I turned to the award-winning novel “Effigy” by Alissa York. When this novel first debuted last year, my co-workers went bananas. All I heard about this novel was that it was just fantastic, making it an easy pick.
And I agree! “Effigy” tells the story of Dorrie, the 4th wife of Mormon Erastus Hammer. Set in the 1850′s, she becomes his wife at the tender age of 14. Erastus learns of Dorrie’s skills as a taxidermist and respects and values her deeply. But the ability to stuff and mount dead animals isn’t (shockingly) what makes this story interesting – it’s the inside look at a polygamist family.
Polygamy is such a foreign concept, so it absolutely fascinates me. Particularly the tension felt between the wives, including their pathetic displays to feign affection. I have a long-term boyfriend and I can’t imagine what it would be like to have to share him with one other girl, nevermind three! They also treat each other as sisters, all collaborating in the household and raising their children together. The children in polygamist families tend to treat their father’s wives all as mothers (as far as I know…), which I also find interesting.
York is also a very accomplished writer. She handles each character and the sensitive subject of polygamy with great care. I can honestly say that “Effigy” even gave me insight into the polygamist lifestyle and made me respect the women who live it. Granted, I believe that if they experienced a monogamous life, they would choose that any day over sharing a husband, but they don’t seem to know any better.
“Effigy” was an eye-opening and highly educational read. With shows like “Big Love,” and the situation with the Yearning for Zion compound in Texas, polygamy is currently a hot and controversial topic. If you’re looking to add some substance to your summer reading list, “Effigy” is a great place to start!

Concept: Knife pleats/Issey Miyake
Once upon a time in late 2006, I really needed a job. I hopped on Craigslist, blindly sent out a couple of resumes, sat back and watched the replies roll in. One such interview opportunity came from Soho’s own Pleats Please by Issey Miyake store. Why would anyone want to wear that many pleats?, I asked myself, unable to shake the image of Alicia Silverstone in Clueless from my head. So I never responded. And now I am regretting it. Not only have I discovered how the high-fashion futuristic feel of tiny knife pleats is about as far as one can get from looking like a “Baby One More Time” video reject; I have also learned that the construction of tightly-pleated fabric allows it to stand up and out in a way that wouldn’t otherwise happen with the same material components! Plus, the brand name is polite! Check out how Miyake’s pieces are made!
I know not everything I write about will be wearable or, mostly, affordable, for most college students, or most people. But, if you’re willing to try, there are probably plenty of look-alikes available at your local thrift shop. I just picked up a metallic blue crumpled/pleated dress at The Vintage Thrift Shop in Flatiron and a to-die-for black pleated scarf from Reminiscence in Chelsea. The aforementioned aren’t even wildly-priced designer vintage spots, but mid-to-low-priced stores, devoid of pretentious waif-like salesgirls to boot. SVA students, I hope you’re listening!
