All of the CollegeCandy writers are strong, smart and…er…opinionated people. So we’re not surprised when some of our blogs turn into heated battlegrounds.  But unlike some other sites, we don’t let this scare us.  In fact, we take pride in our super-opinionated writers AND readers. After all, that’s the whole point of CollegeCandy — a place where every college girl gets her voice heard.

Some days at my internship I get to do so many fun things – like a random lunch with Kendra Wilkinson or Edie Falco, or doing a video interview of an all-male a capella group (OK, that one was a little strange…). Some days, I’m just kept busy doing any number of things, whether it’s searching for the perfect ice cream cake at Ben & Jerry’s, researching celebrities who have said they want to renew their marriages (a real project, and I swear it took up most of my afternoon), or helping out in the fashion closet (a personal fav).

But truthfully, most of the time, I am sitting in front of my computer with absolutely. nothing. to. do. And don’t think that Facebook or Twitter can keep me busy. You can only read so many mindless status updates before it makes you want to de-friend all of your friends. One day, I literally had NOTHING to do for 8 hours. It was painfully boring, but I’ve unfortunately gotten used to it. Especially this summer, since there are so many interns who need to be given tasks to do, and my intern coordinator is very fair.

So, for the other interns out there who I know know exactly what I’m talking about, here are some of my ways to make your mark and pass the time.

1. Try to get to know the other people in your office. If your intern supervisor has nothing to do, you can take it upon yourself to ask around the office if anyone else needs some help. Sometimes, people don’t ask because they forget interns are there, or they assume they’re too busy. This is a great way to do a little networking and really figure out what the office is about. Plus, you’ll look like an awesomely hard worker and everyone will appreciate it.

2. Organize and clean wherever you can. Offices are usually messy, and sometimes disorganized. At least, any magazine I’ve ever worked at is. Even if no one notices that you’ve cleaned, it’ll make YOUR job easier. File magazines away and throw out papers that you know no one needs anymore. It’s an easy way to stand out from the other interns, especially if you’re never asked to do this.

3. Do some job hunting. If you feel like this isn’t the place you want to work, or you don’t think the internship is going anywhere, spend your free time sending out your resume, because frankly, there are no excuses not to. All of the winter interns I worked with got their summer internships doing just that. I’ve found that Ed2010.com and MediaBistro.com are the best for journalism jobs.

And when those productive tasks (or that second latte) just aren’t keeping you awake, here are some more fun things I do. I like to always look like I’m doing something and not just sitting there about to fall asleep, so as long as no one looks at my computer monitor, I’m good. Of course, I’m not condoning slacking, but sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do.

1. Two words: gossip blogs. If you’re into this stuff, actually even if you’re not, these can keep you entertained for a good part of the day. Reading about all of the ridiculous things celebs do can definitely give you a much-needed laugh, plus, it’s a great way to bond with the other interns. Some personal favs of mine are: TheSuperficial.com, ONTD, WWTDD.com, JustJared.com, Vulture, and GoFugYourself.com (really, the last two are the best).

2. Make your own blog. Free time at your internship is a perfect time to start a blog, if you’re into writing or even just want a place to spew your very important thoughts. I get more blogging done at work than any other time in my life. Plus, you’ll discover so many fun and interesting blogs that I promise you’ll become addicted. Tumblr, Blogger, and WordPress are all easy to use.

3. Watch something. When I get really desperate, I start playing around with Youtube and Hulu. The other day I typed in ‘Shaun White’ and was kept busy for a good hour. And for days when I really have nothing to do, I’ll look for old episodes of The Hills. It sounds awful to spend my internship time doing that, but I’ve seen worse – like one girl who used to fall asleep at her computer and thought she was fooling everyone (she wasn’t).

4. CollegeCandy. Duh!

I would now like to share with you one of my favorite blogs. It’s very simple, nothing fancy, but somehow it manages to be the most awesome thing every Monday. This magical, mysterious blog?

Guess what it’s about? Yep, that’s it! That’s literally it. Is Gossip Girl a new episode tonight? A one word answer, yes or no, and you can continue planning your Monday night. Go ahead – check it out. I know, it’s not THAT hard to find this info out yourself, but come on, who wants to navigate the CW website and get attacked by terrifying new-90210 ads? Not I, that’s for damn sure. It’s handy, it’s clear,  it serves its purpose and nothing more. Love. It.

This delightful informative blog is not alone in it’s single-minded practicality. Oh no, check out Doineedanumbrella.com for all your immediate weather needs. And, while not exactly surprising anymore, these are still AWESOME to look at, when spirits are low: isobamapresident.com, and equally enjoyable, ismccainpresident.com.

Some may say they’re silly; I say they’re brilliant! They’re the answers to questions you silently ask yourself every morning, while you decide exactly how much effort you’re going to put into finding the answer. Maybe I love this trend because it facilitates my laziness, but you know what I say to that?  WHATEVS. (Yes, I am too lazy to say the whole word.)

Life in the CollegeCandy office is grueling.

Anyways, here are a few of our latest faves in the college blogging world. These talented bloggers make us laugh, which is pretty much what we look for in a good blog. Thought provoking articles and hard hitting journalism may be desired by some, but around here we just want to laugh.

Which blogs are your faves?

While other girls in my class talked easily about their experiences and commiserated about cramps, I was mortified by the whole experience and didn’t want to talk about it to anyone — not to parents, doctors, or friends. The whole business was just embarrassing and shouldn’t be mentioned except when absolutely necessary, I thought.

Only after years of getting older and wiser have I lost some of my adolescent self-consciousness and become comfortable telling someone when I have cramps (in case they haven’t guessed from me being doubled up on the floor). I still don’t have much tolerance for discussing sex, though. I don’t mind it when others talk, but I’d blush like mad to speak about it myself. So am I just a Puritan, or is there a place in the world for the bashful as well?

I’m not a prude in my ideas at all. I’m at the front of the line championing sexual freedom for everybody. I wish I could speak about the down n’ dirty as explicitly as I believe to be acceptable! On the other hand, though, not everyone has to be broadcasting their sexual histories, experiences, and ruminations on the act. Sexual freedom is just that, and it means there’s room in this world for everyone’s varying comfort levels.

We don’t all have to pretend to be cast members of Sex and the City.

For me, the decision to not speak too explicitly about my own sexual experiences is part of what keeps the act intimate and special. That closeness achieved between two people (or more, if that’s what floats your boat) is an intensely private act, and it’s not repression to keep it between those two people. So, although the magazines and TV shows are encouraging us more and more to make sex a commodity that can be splashed across our Facebook photo albums or our blogs, remember that you can still keep it private, and champion people’s right not to be judged about it, at the same time.

I know! I know! Everything that I do is intended to give John Sellers – and, by extension, all men – raging boners. I think of him all day long, from selecting my outfit in the morning until the moment that I slip between the covers to dream of his sweet, manly embrace. I imagine that it’s much the same for you. He is Details writer John Sellers, for God’s sake. The female half of the world hangs on his every byline.

Yet, in his recent piece, “The Hollywood Gross-Out Girls,” it’s clear that we have failed him greatly. It’s ostensibly about women who make fart jokes (or burp jokes, or poop jokes, etc.) and how horrible they are. (I know, right? Having a functional set of organs is totally grody. It’s even worse when women aren’t ashamed of their own bodies! Yuck.) Yet its underlying theme is far simpler: J.S. wants women – all women – to know that their purpose in life is to turn him on.

“It would be one thing if these female Shreks were cut from the same cloth as Roseanne Barr or Rosie O’Donnell,” he writes. “But the trouble is they’re all smoking hot. It’s their job to primp and preen and push stuff up to look sexy.”

That’s right: their JOB! Take a look at the offenders that he lists in his article: Cameron Diaz (burped on TV), Sarah Silverman (makes poop jokes), Avril Lavigne (spit in public). You might look at this list and think actress, comedian, musician. You would be wrong. No matter what these ladies do to earn a living, they share the same occupation: provider of masturbatory fantasies to John Sellers. And they are failing.

So, what does this gentleman find sexy? It’s clearly not fat chicks! Or Cameron Diaz! So, what is it? Tell us, John!

Most guys would agree that it’s kind of hot when women aren’t too girly. Far from being rendered intolerable by a few tomboyish traits, a woman who wants to go to a baseball game with you or skips a glass of rosé in favor of a few Buds at your favorite dive bar is a turn-on.

Got that, ladies? When you sacrifice your own interests so that you can do whatever your boyfriend wants, it’s TOTALLY HOT! Who wants a girl with her own hobbies, or – God forbid – her own favorite drink?

And lots of guys find a girl dressed in a hoodie, T-shirt, jeans, and sneakers to be sexy.

OH THANK GOD. It’s okay to wear pants sometimes, because they give dudes hard-ons! Before this article clued me in, my entire wardrobe consisted of sparkly thongs and high-heeled platforms. Let me tell you: the winters were tough.

Yet, although John has generously allowed us to wear clothing and drink beer, we’ll never be able to match the glory of real live dudes. Farting? Spitting? Running for President? Dudes have it all covered.

If we want to hang out with someone who behaves like a man, we’ll hang out with, you know, an actual man.

Of course. So, John: I know it’s cute when girls wear sneakers and know how baseball works – it’s like dogs wearing people clothes! – and gross when we act like “men” by, like, having autonomy and not tailoring our every gesture to please the dudes. But can you give us an example? Is there, perhaps, an actress on whom we could model ourselves?

See Natalie Portman, who rapped and swore mannishly (and hilariously) in a much-YouTubed Saturday Night Live sketch but has preserved her schoolgirlish appeal.

Oh, thanks John! That’s…. wait. WHAT? “Schoolgirlish appeal?” Oh my sweet Jesus, he likes women who act like little… EW.

I don’t have to explain why this is bad, do I? Everyone knows that it’s not OK to excoriate women publicly for not being “sexy,” because that’s based on the assumption that women exist to service men sexually, and that their worth is determined by men’s desire or lack of desire for said service. You go to college. You get it. So I’ll put aside the social critique, and say, simply, this:

I don’t normally laugh at fart jokes. But, for some reason, the idea of Cameron Diaz pinning this man down and farting on his face until he cries… well, that’s hilarious.
