Fashion Porn: Do It In a Fall Jacket

One mom approved must-have for both fall and college is a chic fall jacket.

The perfect fall jacket is neutral, goes with all your favorite clothes and fits just right.  Not to mention, it “keeps you warm on those walks to class. You don’t want to catch a cold!” (Thanks, ma.)

This year there are lots of options out there regardless of your style: denim, military, leather, oh my! With so much variety at so many price points, why choose a favorite?

A fall jacket will take you to the field to watch football, on a walk home from an evening class when the air starts to feel crisp, and even out at night.  Though if you’re going to a party, and don’t want to lose your coat, see if you can find a hot yet chivalrous boy to lend you his oversized jacket. If you’re wearing a feminine outfit underneath you’ll instantly achieve the “Cardellini effect” and have an excuse to find Mr. Hottie another day! Read More »

Budget Stylista: Break Out The White Pants

White jeans are everywhere these days: magazines, store windows, tampon commercials (I don’t care how maxi that maxi tampon is, I do not believe you will have my back – or my underwear in this case – in white pants!) And they’re cute. They are a great way to lighten up denim for the summer and look so great with so many things.

I’m especially a big fan of white pants with bright tops, printed tops and denim/chambray tops. I don’t care how much the Gap or famous stylists try to tell me that denim on denim (or a chambray shirt with  jeans) is back in style, I will NOT be rocking a Canadian tuxedo of any kind any time soon. [Note: CollegeCandy loves Canada. Please don't hate us.] But pair a cute denim button down or jacket with white jeans and you’ve got yourself a hot little number. Holleration!

Here are three examples of crisp white denim for summer. And with Memorial Day/Summer BBQs/excessive day drinking around the corner, you can start rocking these ASAP. As in now. As in get yourself a pair and rock them. Read More »

Budget Stylista: Rock the TOMS

If you haven’t heard about TOMS shoes yet you are really missing out. Not just because the shoes are cute. And not just because the shoes are so comfy it feels like you are walking around campus in slippers. Or on clouds. Or marshmallows. (Hm. I could totally go for a s’more right now… but I digress). But because the premise on which TOMS shoes exists is pretty remarkable.

For every pair you buy, TOMS will donate a pair of shoes to a child in a developing country who is in need. And since beginning in 2006, TOMS has given over 600,000 shoes to children in need. Talk about your purchase going to a greater good (and I’m not just talking about the greater good that is you looking totally cute, although TOMS shoes do that too).

So here are four of my favorite ways to rock the TOMS, wherever you may be going. And four pairs for you means four for kids who REALLY need the shoes. Fashion has never felt so good. Read More »

Budget Stylista: Floral Frocks That You Can Rock!

Though it’s hard to think about it now (because it’s hard to think of anything when you’re knee deep in snow), florals are huge for Spring. Shoes, jackets, bags, you name it- with the exception of a cute boy toting a bouquet at my front door, florals are popping up just about everywhere. That being said, it’s hard to look at a floral pattern and wonder if you will look more like your grandma chillin’ in Boca than the uber fashionista you want to portray. So here are some tips to help you out:

1. Keep the rest of the outfit simple. Choose ONE piece of jewelery or a simple belt so that the flowers are the main event.
2. Keep it fun. Aim to keep the look playful, youthful and appropriate for situations other than the 4pm early bird special.
3. Fit is important. Go for fitted dresses, shorter skirts and trendier cuts. Even if the pattern is reminiscent of the drapes at g-ma’s, these things will keep it youthful (and hot).

Here are two floral looks for you to try on for size. One, a bolder and brighter ensemble for those daring ladies, and the other, a softer, more feminine style. Read More »

Wardrobe Jackpot: Boring Stores Reinvented

fashion redoneThis recession totally sucks. But, if you ignore the unemployment rate and rising cost of beer, some good is definitely coming from it. And one of those positives is the fact that the plummeting sales of retail chains has caused them to re-evaluate their brand and reinvent themselves for fall. Suddenly stores that used to make me feel nauseous (boasting window displays stuffed with mom jeans and fugly tablecloth patterns), actually have some adorable stuff that us college girls would actually consider wearing.

For the closets of fashionistas, this is great news. Now there are a dozen more stores that we can peruse online during class and drool over on our weekly treks to the mall. (Plus now when my mom calls and tells me she’s going to Ann Taylor to pick up a suit jacket, I can ask her to pick me up a cute skirt to add to my care package!)

Check out my favorite extreme makeovers (that don’t involve sexy Ty Pennington) below: Read More »

Wardrobe Wish List: Bomber Jacket

leather bomber 1 leather bomber 2

I freakin’ love fall. It is absolutely, 100% the best season for fashion. The knee-high boots? The patterned tights? The cardigans? The Pumpkin Spice Lattes that come out tomorrow? (Ok, so that’s not fashion but I’m counting down the minutes!!) I can barley contain myself as I drool through catalogs and wander through boutiques in a lust-induced haze.

Every year there’s that one item I MUST add to my closet (even if it means living on Ramen for the next month to afford it). Despite the fact that my shopping addiction has my closet filled to the brim, I always justify the need for a new piece by the “school shopping” tradition instilled in me since elementary school. You have to have some new stuff to start the school year, right? Read More »

Budget Stylista: A Now and Later That’s Better Than The Candy

fall fashion

Let’s face it – August is a hard month for shopping. Everywhere you go, window displays scream mohair and motorcycle boots, but you are still sittin’ pretty (and very happily) in your flowery sundress, thankyouverymuch. And while you know you should be looking to invest in a good pair of boots to walk through the slushy snow in just a few months (ew), you would much rather peruse the racks upon racks of summer dresses that are cute and – um – ON MAJOR SALE.

I mean seriously, $200 dresses on sale for $40? I don’t care if it’s negative 30 outside – we can find a way to wear these badboys a little while longer. Who says you have to part with floral the second the leaves start falling from the trees?

Here’s a way to be stylish and savvy: reuse and rewear your favorite summer frocks. Just pair them with some thick tights, a boyfriend blazer or leather bomber, a scarf, some booties or boots and – presto chango – your springtime floral is instantly ready for a stroll with a pumpkin spice latte (the one good thing about cold weather).

Here are 3 options of summery looks that you can take well into fall, but feel free to try this with most summer dresses in your wardrobe! Read More »

Celebrity Chic on the Cheap: I XOXO Taylor Momsen’s Style

taylor_momsen400.jpgEveryone tells me on a daily basis that they can’t believe I don’t watch Gossip Girl. I would loooove the dramz, I would loooove the cute boys, and, most importantly, I would L-O-V-E the fashion.

I know I would love every minute of this hour long fashion show, but just like I know that sitting in front of Ghiradelli week after week without getting any ice cream would only lead to me to going nuts on their jumbo ice cream sundae one day (and gaining 10 lbs), I know for certain that I would soon give into these adorable and oh-so unaffordable GG styles leaving my college gal budget (which is already lacking any luster) in the negatives. I would literally become the girl who lived in her shoes (Christian Louboutin shoes, but shoes nonetheless).

So while I don’t watch the show, I do know that Taylor Momsen’s look is cute, and easy to achieve without breaking the bank. And – bonus-  you can take this look from day to night, and winter to spring!

XOXO, Celebirty Chic on The Cheap. Read More »
