Celebrity Chic on the Cheap: Selena Gomez is Subtly Sassy

[Welcome to Celebrity Chic on the Cheap, where our style guru takes a celebrity look and breaks it down for you, our poor college fashionista. What does that mean? It means that while the celebrities (like style superstar, Rachel Bilson) are spending $5,000 on an ensemble you don’t have to. All you have to do is click on the goods and - boom - you can buy the entire look. For cheap. Yes, we know - there is a spot for her in heaven.]

I adore Selena Gomez. Her face looks as if it were lifted from a porcelain doll. Her hair is so luminous and luxurious. Her music is perfect for those times when you’re dancing in front of the mirror in your PJs with your hairbrush (in contrast to those times when you’re dancing in front of the mirror in your highest stilettos and a bottle of Smirnoff). She is the personification of rainbows and unicorns and puppies and everything that is fluffy and G-rated in this world. I love it.

Selena’s style is just as unpretentious and down-to-earth as the rest of her image. She’s totally youthful, fresh, and laid back. She is that girl who swears she “isn’t even into fashion,” but she always looks current and hip, and you never see her wearing the same ensemble twice.

She is essentially every friend I’ve ever had and secretly resented totally admired.

Luckily, this easy-breezy style fits perfectly into the college style scene and, even better, is not at all difficult (or expensive) to emulate. Read More »

I, like most girls, have a complicated relationship with my body.  After years of self-torture and dressing in clothes that would probably work better as yacht sails,  I’ve come to the conclusion that my body is certainly not perfect, but it is mine.  Ever since I started going to college, I tried to capitalize on this love/hate thing.  I (mostly) know which things look good and which things would look horrible (oh, the visions that have entered my mind in various fitting rooms…*shudder*).  However, even after years of shopping experience, I was extremely interested to know that you can actually dress yourself thinner…without the expensive services of a Personal Shopper.

Whaaa??  Why did I not know this?  I mean, if I knew you could just shave pounds off by picking a different top, I would have chucked my sneakers, bought a box of Oreos and settled down for a happy life.  Okay, maybe not, but it would make my life a lot easier if I wasn’t always worrying about potential muffin top or whatnot.  These tips will make you look more streamlined and thinner, as well as giving you a step up to better dressing (not that you need it…I’m sure if you’re reading this site you’re super fabulous already).

Ralph Lauren Black Label Shirt.jpgTHE WHITE SHIRT

It’s clean, it’s crisp, it’s absolutely flawless. Not to mention it’s designer Carolina Herrera’s number one staple! (And if it’s good enough for Carolina, it’s totally good enough for us.) The white shirt pulls together any look instantly, whether you’re wearing jeans and sneakers or a pencil skirt and heels. Button it up and you’ll be the most fabulous person in the room! Try one like the Rachel Stretch Cotton Shirt from Ralph Lauren Black Label ($298 at ralphlauren.com) — it’s designed with a hint of stretch, so it hugs your curves just right. Read More »

Cute and Stylish Options for Keeping Your Tootsies Toasty This Winter

windblown_l.jpgSo winter is right around the corner (and for those of us on the East Coast, the last few days have felt like it’s already here. BRRR!), and we all know that winter means that every moment you spend outside – trekking to class, waiting to get into a bar/club, or just running necessary errands – suddenly seems a whole lot longer due to the frosty temps.

We also know our feet are one of the quickest body parts to feel that freeze and having popsicles for toes, well that can just ruin your whole day. However, you don’t have to give up style in order to keep those footsies warm; there are plenty of boot options out there that can help us escape the oversized, ugly appearance of so many snow boots and, yes, Uggs. (I’m sorry. Contrary to popular belief, I think these are far from fashionable and guys agree.) You can find them in all sorts of prices ranges, but I have found tons of adorable options that are all $150 or less.

Trudging around in snow up to your ankles can be a real pain, but there are some darling snow boot options out there. They may not be day-to-night kinda shoes, but at least they’ll keep you warm (and cute) on your way to class. Read More »
