I can vividly remember buying my first thong. I was at the mall with my BFFs and they were going on and on about how much guys love them and “OMG, they are SO comfortable!” I started thinking about my crush Joey (aren’t all high school crushes named Joey?) and how he’d fall madly in love with me once he saw me bend over and my hot pink thong peek out over the top of my low-rise jeans. The next thing I knew, I was at the Victoria’s Secret register, arms full of 5 for $25 lacy thongs.

And the next thing I knew after that, I was waddling around my high school, my butt jiggling, with the constant urge to yank that thin strip of fabric out of my ass.

A few years later, after giving up on thongs completely and resigning myself to panty lines, my BFFs starting singing the praises of boy shorts. Thongs were out and now guys couldn’t get over how great a girl’s ass looked peeking out of a pair of boy shorts. So, once again, I gave in (this time thinking about my crush Dave) and stocked up.

And then I spent the next 4 weeks running to the bathroom every 5 minutes to smooth out my undies that had bunched up under my jeans. (I now totally get what it means when people talking about getting their panties in a bunch. Ouch.)

Finally, in a moment of clarity (or a moment of picking my wedgie and discovering a group of boys walking behind me, laughing), I made a conscious choice: no longer would I choose my underwear based on what random guys claimed to like in Cosmo.  Who are these guys, anyway? And regardless, they’re not wearing it (hopefully), I am, and I’m gonna wear what I like, dammit!

And so it went. Out with the painful torture devices and in with the supportive, full coverage, comfy bikinis!

It was liberating! Freeing! My first ever feminist moment. Or my first ever realization that at the end of the day, it really doesn’t matter what sort of underwear I’m wearing. Not because I go months between boys seeing my undies (sad, but true), but because when it’s all said and done, guys really don’t care what kind of underwear we’re wearing. Sure, they have their fantasies (played out month after month in Maxim), but is a guy going to kick you out of his bed because you opted for a pair of boring, black cotton undies for your romp in the sack? Uh, no. And if he does, he’s a moron. With blue balls.

Really, why do we care so much about what guys think of the undergarment designed to protect our lady bits from rubbing against our jeans? Do you think guys put they much thought into their underwear? No. They wear what they like, be it boxers (for some breathing room), briefs (for some penis support) or boxer briefs (for the guys who think tightie whities are weird but can’t handle having their junk just flopping around in a loose pair of boxers).

And why don’t they care? Because it doesn’t matter. And they know that.

Let’s be real here: the only thing we should care about when we’re gettin’ down with someone is that their underwear is clean. Well, that and their sex parts are clean, but that’s a different issue for a different time. When it comes down to the moment of hot, steamy passion truth, the rest doesn’t matter. If someone wants to get freak nasty with you, a pair of granny panties isn’t going to change that. That ish is gonna be strewn over a desk lamp in .5 seconds, anyway.

So forget about what boys like and wear what you like, even if this is what you like.

Why they’re a must-own:

Boy shorts are surprisingly great under skirts and dresses, or anything with a more flowy construction. A great pair of boy shorts won’t show any traditional panty lines, so you can wear them underneath fairly tight pieces, too. Another reason they’re great? Coverage. If you’re wearing a skirt on a windy day, wouldn’t you rather be wearing booty shorts than anything smaller?!

When buying boy shorts, make sure you pick pairs that are snug enough to hug your body, but not tight enough to cause the dreaded muffin top. Don’t go too loose either, though! There is nothing worse than a saggy, baggy pair of boy shorts!

Now that I’m back in school and broke thanks to a few trips to the bookstore, saving money is more essential than ever. But so is a brand new fall wardrobe!

Luckily, American Eagle is a great stop for super comfy weekend/gym/off-to-class clothes on the cheap. There are always awesome deals to be had, and here are just a few of my favorite things.

I love the look of this preppy, college-y sweater. It just makes me want to grab a book and some coffee and spend the afternoon studying in the quad.  But more realistically, it’s perfect for those fall days, especially with a pair of skinny jeans and flats, Keds or Chuck Taylors.

I’m a fan of oversized sunglasses (and use them year round), and I especially love ‘em when they’re under $20. These are on clearance for $14.95, which means it’s not the end of the world if you smush them under a pile of books in your haste to get out of lecture.

Sweatpants are normally not acceptable daytime attire for anyone, but there are exceptions to that rule and these pants are definitely an exception. Not only are they fitted, but the detail around the ankle dresses them up a bit and sets them apart from those torn up boys’ sweats you wear around the dorm.

This skirt is adorable and goes perfectly with a simple tee, some flats or even tights & boots when it gets a little cooler.

Wear it under a cardigan, a boyfriend blazer or on its own – this simple tee is cute, comfy and a great way to make a statement.

Polos are another cute, comfy and easy option and I am diggin’ the rugby stripes (and color selection) of this one.

I find boy shorts to be some of the most comfy and flattering style of undies out there; you can be wedgie free but still totally sexy. And with the $4.95 price tag, you can easily afford a few pairs.

This tote is big and roomie and perfect to carry around campus or to the gym. If you’re not feelin’ the green, they have a couple other colors to choose from.

Remember when that meant a night of Full House and Family Matters? Now it just means a night of heavy drinking followed by a day of serious sleeping. And I still love it just as much.

This week was a long one. We lost Estelle Getty. Our boyfriend, Christian Bale, was arrested for yelling at his mother. And we found out that all the not-so-hard work we are putting into college isn’t worth crap anymore. Awesome.

But even though another week has passed, crazy girls are still around, we are still too picky when it comes to picking boys, and freaky guys are still all about peeing on us in bed. WTF?

Maybe we should stick to being single? It is far too hard to find a tall guy anyway. And getting into a relationship only means adding another ex to the list…who you will never be able to avoid thanks to our generation’s problem with oversharing.

Ugh. I need a shot.

At least boys are starting to appreciate more comfortable undies. I’ll keep that thought close to my heart as I enjoy yet another awesome summer weekend.

In the spirit of making excuses, I’m going to pardon myself and the rest of the lazy gals who have, too, put off their summer 2007 workout plans. The excuse? Summer didn’t officially start until yesterday.

So while there’s no point in regretting our inactivity thus far, I do think it’s about time to step up our game and make up for lost time.

And I’ve got the perfect assistant to help you get back on track: “Tank Top Arms, Bikini Belly, Boy Shorts Bottom.” It’s not just a catchy title. This workout delivers a solid total body workout that’ll prep you for each of the three clothing items referenced.

Minna Lessig, who’s apparently an at-home exercise guru, leads the workout, which is broken down into six sections: warm up; tank top arms; bikini belly; boy shorts bottom; total-body workout; and cool down.

The best part about this workout: the sections are only about 10-15 minutes each (which makes it hard to make excuses about not having enough time to do a couple of segments a few times a week).

A personal trainer who recommended the DVD advised starting with the warm up, and then combining the total-body with one of the isolated segments—and then switching to a different isolated segment the next day.

And I give you my word (and this may just be because I haven’t worked out in months), the workout is intense. I got through the whole DVD this morning, and it’s not your standard light toning workout. (I’m already sooooooore.) Lessig throws in some light cardio moves to compliment the deep toning. I don’t care if you have the tightest glands in the world, you will sweat… a lot.

But fear not, the workout is fairly simple. Lessig starts each circuit by slowly demonstrating the move and then progresses to a quicker, more challenging version. Plus, if the workout gets too intense, one of her assistants does the entire workout at the beginner level.

“Tank Top Arms…” is advertised as a 4-week program that delivers visible results within 10 days (in combination with a healthy diet, of course). If the next 4 fitness-friendly weeks can reverse the damage I’ve done in the past 4 gluttonous weeks, I’m in.

That’s the optimistic view. The scandalous theory is that men are inherently creeps who all have a little Humbert in them and when you dress in cute little outfits like a coed Lolita, they get all hot and bothered. I prefer to stick with the sexpot idea…for obvious reasons.

The cream of the crop had to be these infamous sequined “boyshorts”, if that’s the correct term, as you can oogle above. I want them so badly…. Very pin-up 60s glamour, plus who isn’t a complete whore for anything that sparkles these days.

It’s a bold move to rock boyshorts in public let alone sequined ones. I decided to go for the romper look instead. I know it’s a longshot. I mean, how do you get from shiny booty-shorts to rompers, but I feel they are a good settling point. Plus it’s not even summer and I’m already tired of shorts.

Skirts are lovely, but don’t you ever just want something else? Hence, the romper. Seriously, how adorable are these? Get on this trend.
