I have serious respect for Bravo’s Andy Cohen. He gets celebs to do crazy, awesome things on his show Watch What Happens Live. Like this. Did you ever think you’d hear the words “Martha Stewart” and “shotski” in the same sentence? I sure didn’t. But here it is. Photo evidence. In honor of Women’s History Month, CollegeCandy has decided to spotlight some of the world’s most influential women. Last week we focused on the women from our generation and this week, we pay attention to some of the most spectacular thirty-somethings. These are the women that show us life really does get interesting in your 30s, whether you’re a famous movie star or activist. Anything can happen, and just like these women have done in their 30s, we can make a difference in the world at any age.

A lot of times, the fighting and rivalry between sexes causes a behavior called ‘reduction,’ where each sex reduces the other one to a short list of (of I don’t know, lets say 13 or 14) traits, to belittle others and to make themselves feel like the true social scientist they know they are. But, all fun aside, we know that regardless of genitalia, people are actually quite complex. That’s really our evolutionary flaw. We develop consciousness to avoid needing night-vision eyes or long ass necks and accidentally give ourselves all these hangups and fears.

So, with that complexity in mind, let’s take a look at 5 thing’s your boyfriend loves that he might be to afraid to admit to.

5 ) Legos. Alright, not sure why ANYONE would be afraid to admit to loving these, but I see a lack of Legos in college dorm rooms and honestly I don’t know why. Legos are fun sober and SUPER fun when drunk. Maybe guys aren’t afraid to admit that they ‘did love these, when I was a kid,’ but can’t come to grips with the fact that they still think about going back and really finishing that Star Destroyer replica, now that they’ve got the money to buy the right color blocks. Buy your boyfriend Legos for his next birthday, and watch his face light up.

4 ) Unicorns. For some reason these magical, fair and royal creatures of ancient myth have garnered a feminine association in modern day. Which is total bullshit, FYI, since Unicorns are awesome and guys shouldn’t feel ashamed that they love them and wish they could ride them sometimes, or maybe just watch two unicorns eat grass and gently nuzzle each other. Pop ‘The Last Unicorn’ into your DVD player and see what happens. Prediction: 5 minutes of ‘come on let’s watch something else’ and then 1 hour and 45 minutes of wide-eyed enrapture.

3 ) Pro Wrestling. Now let’s move to the other side. Everyone knows guys have trouble admitting that they love stuff that might be perceived as ‘female’ but what about stuff thats inherently ‘male,’ or in this case ‘stupid.’ We love pro-wrestling, we can’t help it. The disdain that we try to muster for it comes not from being ‘too sophisticated’ but rather from having our tiny 9-year-old hearts shattered when we learned that Wrestling is fake and that Hulkamania, in fact, won’t run wild all over the bully at school.

Doubt me? Wiki it and do some research. Ask your boyfriend a question about wrestling characters in the last 2 years, something contemporary. Prepare for an intricate explanation of the storyline. (Additionally I’d like to point out that women get to watch soap operas and call it ‘kitschy fun’ but if men watch wrestling, which is just a man-soap-opera, we are cromagnums.)

2 ) Other dude’s beards. If you’ve ever had a conversation with your boyfriend about how good another guy looks, chances are he either says ‘I don’t look at dudes’ or changed the words ‘Brad Pitt is handsome’ to ‘Ya he’s pretty jacked, good tris and lats.’ The truth is we don’t really admire things like dimples and cheekbones in other men, but we do admire other men’s beards.

Whether we have beards of our own and see some type of knightly brotherhood in another beard wearer, or simply wish we could grow a beard, save losing our girlfriend or our job, beards are something we look at constantly. Occasionally while whispering under our breath ‘yeah, that’s…that’s really nice…really full…I wonder if he conditions?‘

1 ) Bravo Programming. For a channel thats supposed to be for ‘alternative lifestyles’ they sure have a lot of MILF based programming. MILFS in OC, MILFS in NY. We came for the hot older ladies (and hot lesbians on Work Out) but stayed for the sensitive story lines on Top Chef and Project Runway.

Bravo’s collection of Real Housewives has contributed many things to pop culture, such as the infamous New Jersey table flip, the term “prostitution whore,” multiple face-lifts and boob jobs (I’m looking at you Orange County!), and who can forget the song “Tardy for the Party”? Through all the drama though, one strong willed woman has truly climbed to the top – The Real Housewives of New York’s Bethenny Frankel.

The fast talking, quick witted, and always opinionated Bethenny first appeared on the Real Housewives as the only single lady looking for love, although skeptical about it from the get-go. More focused on her career and becoming a better version of herself, Bethenny stood out from the beginning as being an independent woman who wouldn’t stop until she got what she wanted. What a change in comparison to the rest of the housewives!

By the third season of the Real Housewives of New York, viewers got to see Bethenny in an entirely different light. She went from lonely career woman to a flourishing force to be reckoned with. While the majority of the Housewife characters spent the season arguing and stirring up drama amongst each other, Bethenny was constantly working her ass off on her multiple book deals, her “SkinnyGirl” brand, and her budding romance with her now husband, Jason Hoppy. She even found out that she was pregnant!

Now, with her new show on Bravo Bethenny Getting Married? featuring her marriage and pregnancy, it seems like Bethenny truly is sitting on top of the world. With the ultimate success in her public career life and her new private ventures, it seems like Bethenny has found a way to balance the best of both worlds – being a serious business entrepreneur while still managing to be a dedicated wife and mother, all while remaining true to the brand she created.

Media today rarely highlights success that women obtain in their careers, and it’s even less likely for the media to celebrate a woman who has everything they could aspire for. In a world of Lindsay Lohan and Britney Spears always being put under a negative spotlight, it is sometimes hard to remember that women are out making a name for themselves every day.

For example, Bethenny has shown that her hardwork has truly paid off. In the last two years, she has published two New York Times best selling books: Naturally Thin: Unleash Your SkinnyGirl and Free Yourself from a Lifetime of Dieting and The SkinnyGirl Dish: Easy Recipes for Your Naturally Thin Life. She has been featured on three seasons of The Real Housewives of New York, as well as her own exercise DVD Body by Bethenny. She has even created an audio book this past year! With these accomplishments, it’s no wonder Bravo offered her a show all her own.

Through everything though, it seems like Bethenny hasn’t compromised herself, showing that hard work actually pays off, instead of taking the easy way out. (She could have easily just settled for her fame on the Real Housewives, but instead decided to make a name for herself.) Remaining steadfast in getting exactly what she wants, Bethenny shows young women that a little bit of effort and a whole lot of hard work truly pays off – and with today’s economic climate and negative female media attention, that’s a positive thing to see.

So, when I grow up … I want to be my own version of Bethenny Frankel, because with all her accomplishments, her blunt wit, and her you-can-have-it-all attitude, who wouldn’t want to be?

Bethenny Frankel from The Real Housewives of New York City has recently received a lot of flack for losing 29 of her 35 pounds baby weight in just less than three weeks. She gave birth to her premature daughter, who was born at just about 4 pounds, on May 8th, and has since reverted back to her original pre-baby 122 pounds body. To be honest, when I first read this about Bethenny (I had no idea who she was) I was shocked to find out that she lost more than 3/4 of her weight in less than 3 weeks. I understand that she was already pretty small (a size 4) before she got pregnant and she had been healthily monitoring her weight while she was pregnant….but her baby, Bren, was only four pounds when she was born! What does that say about her ‘actual’ eating habits when Bethenny was carrying this baby?

The problem with ‘celebrities’ (the term used very loosely) shedding the majority of their baby weight rapidly right after they give birth is that they give an extremely unrealistic perception of baby weight loss to the general public and to the women who emulate to look like these women. Given their status and fame, ‘celebrities’ are guaranteed the opportunity and time to work with a personal trainer, have chefs cook their foods, consult with a nutritionist and happily maintain the facade that they really didn’t do anything but “eat healthy” and “exercise” to lose weight after their pregnancies. While that is partly true, we often forget that these ways of weight loss are not meant to be completed in a span of three weeks but rather a longer and more tedious time frame where it’s not merely losing the baby weight but also trying to maintain the healthy fluids that are meant to be beneficial for the babies.

I do understand that the pressures of the industry do provoke even D-List celebrities like Bethenny to look fit, but it’s one thing to be fit and in shape just for yourself, but another thing to possibly endanger the life of your baby for the sake of looking skinny. Bethenny herself has clearly stated from the past that she’s struggled with healthy weight loss and nutrition since she was a kid and even has written bestseller books chronicling how to maintain a svelte figure. I do admire Bethenny’s endurance in keeping up with her weight (she says she lost almost 25 pounds of her baby weight just via C-Section), but when ‘celebrities’ send out these type of messages, they must stress the importance of healthy weight loss and eating right.

We often forget that while we look up to celebrities for their physical attributes, most of the times, they have many more resources than us in looking good. Yes, do stay slim and in shape, but maintain it in a healthy manner.

It’s hard to put into words how much I love Bravo’s series Top Chef. To say I have formed an unhealthy obsession with it is an understatement. I can literally sit on my couch for seven hours straight without blinking an eye if I happen upon a Top Chef marathon. I literally cried real tears when Jennifer Carroll was asked to pack her knives and go last week. And sometimes I even have quick-fire themed nightmares where all of my ingredients have gone sour and the punishment is death-by-Padma.

Needless to say, tonight’s finale has me feeling excited and anxious in places I never knew existed. And what does that call for? A special viewing party!

My two friends and I are getting together to watch the finale together, but before we do, we have some Top Chef themed activities planned. We are each representing one of the three finalists – I will be dressing up as bad boy Michael Voltaggio complete with full sleeve of fake tattoos – and cooking ourselves a nice meal, competition style, of course. After I have been named the winner (duh), we will all settle in to find out who will be named Top Chef.

Lovable, red-head Kevin Gillespie and the brothers Bryan and Michael Voltaggio are, in my opinion, the best finalists out of all Top Chef seasons past. I can’t even begin to predict a winner. Ok, that’s a lie. I totally can.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe it will be a showdown between the brothers. Would anyone be upset if it is? They’re both magically delicious, and I’m not talking about their food, if you catch my drift. As much as I love Kevin and his beard, I don’t think his simple food is up to the Voltaggio challenge.

I’m rooting for Bryan. Sure, Michael may have him beat in creativity, but his arrogance really pisses me off sometimes. And for that, and that alone, I hope his brother hands his big ego-filled head to him on a platter. Surrounded by Swiss chard and sunchokes, of course. Bryan seems like a gentleman and a culinary scholar. He is the champion of my heart and of my stomach and if he wins, I will certainly travel to Frederick, Maryland where his restaurant,Volt, is located so I can personally shake his hand. And maybe accidentally kiss him on the lips for 30 to 45 seconds.

So obviously the buzz on all the fashion blogs and entertainment channels today is centered on the red carpet from last night’s Emmys. I must admit, I only tune in for the pre-show to see what all the celebs are wearing and to get the scoop on who was hot and who was totally not. Why waste three hours of “I’d like to thank God and the academy” when I can Google all that shiz the next day?

And the stars didn’t disappoint. As I sat curled up on my couch, the gowns had me drooling and dreaming of the day when I would someday find somewhere (anywhere!) to flaunt a flowing, sparkling evening dress. Sadly, as I stared down at my Easy-Mac-stained sweats, I realized that I won’t be wearing anything haute couture unless I marry Hollywood royalty or strike it big myself. Oh, and somehow fit into a size 00. None of which seem too promising.

So, here’s to dreaming big and living vicariously though the smoking hot women who graced the Emmy red carpet while I sat home with a 2 liter of Diet Coke and a bag of Baked Lays.

Christina Hendricks

It was so freakin’ refreshing to see a woman flaunting her curves. Way too often, the few starlets with real bodies are forced into hiding under a flowy baby-doll dress. But Hendricks radiated a sex appeal reminiscent of Marilyn Monroe with a body-hugging gown that accented her blessings up top and her hourglass figure. Not to mention that the deep purple couldn’t have complemented her ivory skin and red locks any better. She clocked in at the way opposite end of the scale from our fake tanned, too-thin tabloid queens. Can I get a hallelujah?

Leighton Meester and Blake Lively

The Gossip Girl’s have a very high standard to uphold; gracing our television screens every week in the chicest couture outfits on the market, we all expect them to be up there on the best dressed list for every award show. And they didn’t fail to “bring it” at the Emmys. Not only did they each look fabulous on their own, but they complemented each other perfectly as they presented the award for directing in a comedy series. Blake rocked a hot red number with a way-low plunging neckline, while Meester updated the classic Grecian look with unexpected layers and voluminous knotted shoulders. If only frat parties were more formal (and I didn’t totally fear someone spilling Jungle Juice on me). Sigh.

Lindsay Price

Bravo for some effortless, understated beauty. Price radiated on the red carpet, without screaming for attention. She donned a trendy one-shoulder dress, with a brooch’s worth of embellishment, and draping sheer layers of magenta. She totally worked the simplicity factor, with effortless hair and makeup and minimal jewelry. Not that she needs much; that girl is gorgeous and the dress only accentuated what she’s already working.

Kill Me (AKA: Kill me):
All those beautiful dresses would never look quite as good if there wasn’t something equally awful to compare them to. So, while many of the stars had us gaga eyed, here are the few that had me cringing. Were these ladies under the influence (of heavy drugs) when they got dressed?

Victoria Rowell

Seriously? We love Obama as much as the next liberal college girl, and we’re are all for women taking a stance on politics, but is your dress really the place to make a statement? And where did Ms. Rowell get this “dress”? A 4th of July picnic table? Earth to Rowell, he’s already in office; you can wear a normal freakin’ dress to the Emmy’s.

Sarah Silverman

We imagine this is how things went for Sarah and her stylists:
“Ok, guys, here’s the deal. I’m doing the Emmy Red Carpet thing. I know – huge, right? Ok, so let’s find a dress that totally washes out my pasty white skin and adds about 100 pounds to my frame. Oh, and the bigger the saddle bags the better! I’m thinking ’80′s prom meets Cinderella’s evil step-sisters.” Kthxbye.”

Padma Lakshmi

The host of Top Chef looks like she had a run in with a blender on her way to the Emmys, with shredded straps and a mangled mass of roses on her hip. If I were Badgley Mischka I would be extremely embarrassed that I sent someone to the Emmy’s looking like they had stopped by Wal-Mart to pick up a dress, then swung by a craft store for a few silk flowers to “spiff things up” a bit.  Oh, and bravo (no pun intended) for making the skinniest girl in Hollywood look like she tasted a few too many Quick Fires.

Project Runway is finally coming back tomorrow night. They’ve kept us waiting for-freaking-ever and now it’s all coming back in a MAJOR way.

…with a few slight changes.

The show will still have supermodel Heidi Klum, fashion designer Michael Kors, and Elle fashion director Nina Garcia returning as judges, as well as the additional guest judge each episode. But after five seasons in pedestrian-friendly New York, the hit reality competition for aspiring fashion designers has moved to both a new city, car-jammed Los Angeles at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising, and a new network, Lifetime. And now that the lawsuits between the Weinstein Company, NBC Universal (owner of Bravo), and Lifetime are thankfully over, we can enjoy our fashion porn in peace once again.

Like most, I was a little peeved when PR left Bravo, but the new star-studded L.A. setting has provided some amazing new opportunities: major guest judges such as Christina Aguilera, Eva Longoria Parker, Rebecca Romijn, and Lindsay Lohan and some fresh inspirations for new challenges. As Michael Kors has hinted, ”L.A. can be the most laid-back and the most glamorous. It’s the land of bikinis and gowns.” As such, this season the designers will take on challenges centered on the beach and the red carpet, and also create garments as a tribute to movies and Hollywood.

I am still not quite over the fact that I have to watch Lifetime (the same network my mom boasts as her fav), but I gotta say: I’m really excited to see what this new season has to offer.

Like the brand-new spin-off called “Models of the Runway,” which will air after the show. Unlike seasons past – when the model competition was complete BS – we’ll be getting a behind-the-scenes look at the fashion competition from the models’ perspective. The show will follow 16 models competing to be paired with the winning designer of “Project Runway” for a $25,000 cash prize from L’Oreal Skin Genesis and a fashion spread in Marie Claire magazine.

But wait, there’s more! In honor of the big return, there will even be a 2 hour all-star challenge, featuring previous Project Runway contestants competing for a big-ass prize, airing before the season premiere! Do you miss Jeffrey Sebelia? Santino Rice? Uli? (God, I miss Uli!) You can get them all in one place for a delicious 120 minutes of goodness.

Yeah, that’s like 5 full hours of Project Runway heaven. In one night. After a full year with nothing but reruns. Talk about making a comeback. Let’s just hope this binge goes better than my first kegstand after 3 months without drinking… Seriously, as I grabbed onto the sides of that barrel of Keystone, a little Tim Gunn appeared over my shoulder and said “I’m concerned.”

God, I missed him.
