If you were in a Target on December 28, you might have seen a group of women breastfeeding openly in the store. Across the country women staged a “nurse-in” at Target locations in solidarity with a Texas mother who says employees harassed her while she was breastfeeding in the women’s clothing section.

Michelle Hickman organized the nurse-in through a Facebook group after the incident at the end of November. Public indecency laws vary state-to-state, but in 45 states there is a specific part that allows women to breastfeed in public. In others, including Michigan where a group of mother’s were prohibited by a mall to hold a nurse-in, public indecency and nudity laws look at breastfeeding as different than indecent exposure.

As a childless student, the options for breastfeeding are far from my mind. But it’s women such as Hickman, that are standing up for women’s rights everywhere. “Designated” nursing areas are not always the most comfortable (really Target, you’re suggesting changing rooms?) and women should be able to nurse as they please.

I started really thinking about the idea of public breastfeeding after going to the Andy Warhol museum in Pittsburgh. An artist at Carnegie Mellon University created the “Milk Truck,” a mobile breastfeeding unit. The idea is that if a woman is breastfeeding in public, let’s say a restaurant, and an owner asks her to move to the bathroom. She doesn’t want to breastfeed in the bathroom (essentially you’re asking a baby to eat in the bathroom) so she contacts the Milk Truck. The Milk Truck (which looks like a food truck with a 3D breast on the roof) pulls up outside, giving the woman a comfortable place to feed her baby. The owner of the restaurant gets a pink breast truck outside, leaving them to ponder whether women should be allowed to breastfeed in their restaurant.

Being asked to breastfeed elsewhere is something that only affects women. It’s a natural part of life for most people, so why is it still considered indecent?

This video is beyond disturbing. These two poor girls will never lead normal lives, they will probably die as old virgin cat ladies. Shouldn’t child protective services get in on this one? Hello?

The benefits of breastfeeding cannot be disputed. It is better for the baby and mother, both in the short and the long term. I’m all for women being able to whip out their breast and feed their baby whenever is necessary. However, there needs to be some limits on the distance women will go regarding breastfeeding.

Children should be breast feed until the age of one or two. After that it becomes a little abnormal. If your child can ask you for your boobie, you shouldn’t be letting little Tommy suck on it anymore.

This leads us to the case of famous moms and their obsession with and discussion of feeding their babes. We all love Selma, she is beautiful, smart, and does a whole lot of charity work. But, yesterday Selma Hayek was quoted as saying, “I’m like an alcoholic. It is like, I don’t care if I cry, I don’t care if I am fat, I am just going to do it for one more week, one more month, and then when I see how much good it is doing her and I can’t stop.” This quote is about Selma’s addiction to breastfeeding, which makes it a little more scary. Remember that famous pic of Angelina Jolie in W Magazine breastfeeding her new baby? And of Maggie Gyllenhaal on a park bench with her entire breast exposed?

All I’m saying is we need to get a grip on reality and not breastfeed our kids even after they have learned long division and how to play kickball. It just isn’t right.

Awwww.

Then the idiot took the pics to his neighborhood Wal-Mart to get developed. Because why wouldn’t the boyfriend of a millionaire want to get a deal on his digital prints?

And what happened? Obviously, the under-paid employee of America’s most controversial store made extra copies of the pics and is shopping them around to the tabloids. Normally this wouldn’t be a huge deal, except for the fact that the pictures included shots of JL breastfeeding her newborn.

Yup! Another celebrity boob is exposed.

The Spears family and local authorities are looking into this whole scandal, but dirty dudes everywhere (Jamie Lynn is a minor!) are patiently waiting those pics.

Just remember this the next time you want to save a few cents on those pictures of yours; you never can trust the photo dude.

The blog posted on USAToday said, “Karen Speed, a 33-year-old Canadian mother who describes herself as a “lactivist,” tells The (Toronto) Star that such photos led Facebook to delete her account and a support group she had established for breastfeeding mothers.”

First of all, what is Karen Speed, a 33-year-old Canadian mother/lactivist doing on Facebook in the first place? What is she possibly getting out of this? Finding out at which side of campus the next tailgate is gonna start? Checking up on her douchebag ex-boyfriend to see if he added any new skanks to his friend list?

Seriously, Karen. Seriously.

I think it’s great that mothers are reaching out to each other for support, but is it really necessary to post, what I think, are such personal and intimate photos on this particular site that is regularly monitored? Here is one of the pics that was removed from the site, and nipple or not – it may not be “obscene” as Facebook would say, but it’s still pretty needless on a college-based networking site.

I guess what I’m trying to say is…send your friends a personal e-mail if you want to show yourself breastfeeding without mysteriously finding your account deleted. Facebook is run by an outside company and by things called “terms” and “conditions.” Of course this would fuel controversy.

In related content, one of the pro-breastfeeding Facebook Groups is called “Booby Babies and Their Mommies.” If the name alone isn’t convincing enough that Facebook should remain a site for college students, check out their alma mater, which is supposed to be sung to the tune of (lame) Beauty and the Beast’s “Be Our Guest”:

See our breasts, see our breasts

Everywhere, half-naked chests.

While we nurse, the prudish curse

And wish we’d button up our vests.

Sorry folks, look away,

If we’re too décolleté

But this IS what boobs are made for

Not those Wonderbras you paid for.

We refuse to go feed

Hunched in bathroom stalls, indeed

We’re appalled that you would make such rude requests!

Would you agree to eat

Upon a toilet seat?

See our breasts, see our breasts, free our breasts!

No one on Facebook should regularly wear a vest, which is why, when it comes to Facebook, this is the only way moms should ever fit in.
