It’s hot, you’re broke and you’ve run out of creative ideas for fun time with your special someone. Well have no fear ladies and gents. A summer picnic is a cheap and special way to show your hunny you were thinking about them. Here are some ideas for food and other special items to bring that won’t break the bank, but keep you entertained in the sweltering weather.
Grab a checked table cloth or blanket to sit on and save your tush from the summer bugs!
Keep cool. Bring water bottle spray fans if it’s a very hot day out. They keep you cool, refreshed and will even help work on your summer glow!
Hydrate. If you don’t want liquor (although beer and/or wine coolers are a great way to quench your thirst!), here are some drink recipes: Read More »

We’ve all felt the effects of the current economical status; gas alone has been breaking my bank account on a weekly basis. While I work my butt off to make ends meet, everything from fruits and veggies to gas to, well, almost anything, contines to get more expensive. And my bank account whittles away.
What’s a striving- to- have- more- money- 20- something to do? I brainstormed – in my desperate need to scrounge up some extra cash – ways in which you can get creative, have some fun and throw somethin’ extra into that piggy bank.
Turn your hobby into some cash. Do you enjoy making scrapbooks, knitting, creating playlists or setting up peoples’ iPods for them with the latest tunes? If so, take your hobby and make it into something profitable. Put out flyers in your neighborhood, an ad in the local paper, send out a mass email or even create a standard template website and let people know you’re open for business!
Sell some old clothes. Those prom dresses have sat in your closet since high school and, let’s face it, you’re not going to be wearing them anytime soon. Go to a consignment shop, take out an ad in the paper or swing by a local beauty pageant (I swear they’re around and the ladies will bite for those gowns). With, say, 50 bucks a dress, you could walk out of there with a couple hundred dollars! Read More »

It’s summer.
Translation: I’m not doing sh*t.
Actually, that’s a huge lie. Instead of lounging like I would like to be, I’m working my ass off at a menial job making minimum wage. Hours upon hours of filing, sitting in front of a super-slow, super-irritating computer and returning home to do the same (with the addition of the roommates watching endless Friends re-runs as background noise) has turned me into a bit of a mindless drone. I have felt myself becoming lazier, smellier, dumber and well, wider.
My gym shoes have collected dust by the front door, right next to at least three garbage bags full of Keystone cans, Bud Light bottles and the occasional box of Carlo. My once-amazing gym habits (3x a week, alternating between running and the elliptical) have become practically non-existent. I even have a sweet new workout mix created on my iPod, but this has still not motivated me to actually go exercise.
But, I figure that there is always a bright side to every situation. Since I can’t actually find the energy to drag myself halfway across town to the gym, I decided that I can bring the exercise to me. But, with little cash and little-to-no motivation, what can a girl do to stay in shape? Read More »

Yeah, if you’re Tila Tequila or, I don’t know, flippin, uh, Rockefeller or something, you can just whistle for your limo and whisk off your date to some exotic location, awesome food, and, eventually, your giant purple bed.
Otherwise, if you’re, oh, say, a college student with not a lot of moolah (and therefore many fewer options), summer dates tend to digress into long walks and the occasional movie night. Now, I love walking and I have been known to thoroughly enjoy a good movie night, but sometimes you want to do something a little more special–without draining the last few bucks in your bank account.
So, dear College Candies, here are a few ideas. Use your new powers for good and not for evil.
Eh, what the hell. Use ‘em for evil too.
A Day at the Beach
Frick, man, who doesn’t love the beach?! Pack up your bathing suit, a picnic lunch, sunscreen, towels, some balls, and your date (and your date’s balls…optional) and head off for a lovely day. Read More »

Last February, Miami Herald reporter Natalie McNeal set out to do something that I think we all wish we could do: Not spend money. Of course, she had to buy necessary things, but she made a “vow of frugality” to not eat out, buy clothes, or visit a salon. Also like many of us, McNeal is a self described “fritterer”, not spending her money on huge purchases, but buying a bunch of little things that tend to add up.
That first month, McNeal saved $400. Her Miami Herald Blog, The Frugalista Files, follows her as she navigates her way through pre-recession spending and saving.
Her blog has information on budget building, stories about spending thriftily, and links to other helpful sites like this one that gives you some tips on how to eat healthy on a college student’s budget.
Most interesting to me, is that McNeal started this blog in part to keep track of her progress and also have a means by which the public could hold her accountable, keep her on her spending toes, so to speak. I think it’s a great idea for anyone (like me!) who has trouble curbing their spending and staying on a budget. Read More »

I’m broke and lazy – are you broke and lazy? Of course you are.
You’re a college student (or a big fan of college-related material if you’ve found yourself reading this). To many, “college student” is synonymous with “too busy and too broke.” Even if you’re a part-time student/full-time worker it’s assumed that you’re a slacker. So instead of slacking off on ultra-cool college websites (…) how about you get off your ass and start preparing for your trip home?
Oh, you need help? Sigh…OK.
Just sit back and let CollegeCandy do the dirty work of providing simple-yet-important travel tips while you reap the benefits.
Book your flight early
It’s surprising how many people don’t follow this all-important rule. Call it being a member of the A.D.D. Generation or being too busy with schoolwork, but there’s no excuse when purchasing a ticket home is just a click away.
It’s early November – are you planning on heading home to see your family? Let’s hope you’ve already bought your ticket: holiday season is by far the most booked-up time to travel in the year. If you haven’t yet come back to this article (it’s not going anywhere) and book your flight at Orbitz, Expedia or Priceline immediately. Be sure to avoid spending ungodly amounts of time looking for the absolute cheapest rate: too much time browsing will equal too much money spent if you don’t act quick. Read More »

That oh-so-reliable British rag mag The Sun is reporting LaLohan is broke.
Apparently, Linds spent so much money in such a short time that she can no longer afford her own place and is currently “lodging at a friend’s mansion”.
How can someone go through millions in only a few years? By pushing common sense away and replacing it with massive amounts of greed and idiocy.
According to The Sun, some of Lindsay’s pre-third rehab stint activities included “blowing a million dollars on just one hotel bill, thousands on cocaine and booze, $137,000 in rehab costs and thousands on legal fees after numerous drink-driving convictions.”
Back when she was famous for something other than ridiculous behavior, Lohan was the queen of the Chateau Marmont hotel, “spending $450,000 on a $1,200 a night suite, as well as another $500,000 having chauffeurs on 24-hour standby.”
She also loved her champagne, spending “$550 a pop” on “endless” bottles of Cristal.
Now, I’m all for having a good time, but if Miss Hasn’t-Made-A-Good-Movie-Since-2004 truly is broke, she completely deserves it. Read More »
