Our Golden Globe Predictions

It’s January, so you know what that means in Hollywood – it’s awards season! Kicking off the big ones is the Golden Globes, airing THIS Sunday, Jan. 16, and I for one cannot WAIT!

The Golden Globes merge television and movie awards and are sure to bring out some truly fabulous celebs. It’s (almost) goes without saying that this is the best awards show out there. But we all know what’s most important (besides the fashion) and that’s not who’s presenting: it’s who will be taking home the awards. Which movie will be crowned Best Drama or Best Comedy? Which actress impressed everyone the most? Who will make the drunkest acceptance speech?

So, with no further ado, here are my predictions on who will most likely win and who SHOULD win the biggest categories of the night:

Best Motion Picture – Drama:

Nominees: Black Swan; The Fighter; Inception; The King’s Specch; The Social Network

Who WILL Win: The King’s Speech

Who SHOULD Win: The Social Network or Black Swan

Black Swan is a huge favorite with everyone right now, so I honestly don’t see why it SHOULDN’T win. But who knows? The King’s Speech is getting a lot of good reviews, and really… it just seems like one of those movies that would win a Golden Globe.

Best Actress – Drama:

Nominees: Halle Berry for Frankie & Alice; Nicole Kidman for Rabbit Hole; Jennifer Lawrence for Winter’s Bone; Natalie Portman for Black Swan; Michelle Williams for Blue Valentine

Who WILL Win: Natalie Portman or Michelle Williams

Who SHOULD Win: Natalie Portman

Natalie Portman was awesome in Black Swan – most people are saying it’s been her best role yet, and I couldn’t agree more. She absolutely deserves the award, especially for what she went through in order to play the role (intense dance training and hardly eating – ouch). But Michelle Williams did a great job in Blue Valentine, and she’s always been a favorite, so… I feel like it could go either way.

Best Actor – Drama:

Nominees: Jesse Eisenberg for The Social Network; Colin Firth for The King’s Speech; James Franco for 127 Hours; Ryan Gosling for Blue Valentine; Mark Wahlberg for The Fighter

Who WILL Win: Colin Firth

Who SHOULD Win: James Franco or Jesse Eisenberg

Let’s be clear: I really, really want James Franco to win. Not only because I think he’s gorgeous, but also because he really did do an amazing job in 127 Hours. Who else could make that so interesting? And Jesse Eisenberg played his character perfectly in The Social Network. But I’m hearing a lot of good things about Colin Firth, and like I said before, this just seems like one of those roles that would win.

Best Motion Picture – Comedy:

Nominees: Alice in Wonderland; Burlesque; The Kids Are All Right; Red; The Tourist

Who WILL Win: The Kids Are All Right

Who SHOULD Win: The Kids Are All Right

Okay, first of all, why was Burlesque even nominated? But seriously… The Kids Are All Right is a better movie than all of these noms put together.

Best Actress – Comedy:

Nominees: Annette Bening for The Kids Are All Right; Anne Hatahway for Love and Other Drugs; Angelina Jolie for The Tourist; Julianne Moore for The Kids Are All Right; Emma Stone for Easy A

Who WILL Win: Annette Bening or Emma Stone

Who SHOULD Win: Emma Stone

I want Emma Stone to win because I will just be so happy for her. It’s possible, because Easy A did really well and I’ve pretty much only heard good things about Emma’s performance. But Annette Bening also did a really good job convincing me she was a lesbian. It’s kind of hard to say.

Best Actor – Comedy:

Nominees: Johnny Depp for Alice in Wonderland; Johnny Depp for The Tourist; Paul Giamatti for Barney’s Version; Jake Gyllenhaal for Love and Other Drugs; Kevin Spacey for Casino Jack

Who WILL Win: Johnny Depp for Alice in Wonderland

Who SHOULD Win: Jake Gyllenhaal

Okay, I know Jake Gyllenhaal probably doesn’t REALLY deserve this award. But, just look at him. Anyway, a lot of critics are confused as to why Johnny Depp was nominated twice in this category – it seems a bit excessive. That hints that he might win, and also, he’s Johnny Depp.

Best Supporting Actress:

Nominees: Amy Adams for The Fighter; Helena Bonham Carter for The King’s Speech; Mila Kunis for Black Swan; Melissa Leo for The Fighter; Jacki Weaver for Animal Kingdom

Who WILL Win: Helena Bonham Carter or Melissa Leo

Who SHOULD Win: Mila Kunis

Helena Bonham Carter always does a good job, and she’s a critic favorite, so it’s really possible she could win. However, Melissa Leo is getting tons of recognition for her role in The Fighter, and I’m hearing that she’s the favorite to win this.

Best Supporting Actor:

Nominees: Christian Bale for The Fighter; Michael Douglas for Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps; Andrew Garfield for The Social Network; Jeremy Renner for The Town; Geoffrey Rush for The King’s Speech

Who WILL Win: Christian Bale

Who SHOULD Win: Andrew Garfield

It’s actually kind of a toss up between Christian Bale and Michael Douglas. Some feel Michael Douglas will take it because he was so sick this year – but that could be totally untrue. I have a feeling Christian Bale will win this one, although I do think Andrew Garfield did an excellent job and would deserve it just as much.

Best Animated Film:

Nominees: Despicable Me; How To Train Your Dragon; The Illusionist; Tangled; Toy Story 3

Who WILL Win: Toy Story 3

Who SHOULD Win: Toy Story 3

Toy Story 3 should win hands down. No arguments. Try and tell me you didn’t cry during this movie. I dare you.

Best TV Show – Drama:

Nominees: Boardwalk Empire; Dexter; The Good Wife; Mad Men; The Walking Dead

Who WILL Win: Dexter or Boardwalk Empire

Who SHOULD Win: Dexter

I have probably never heard one bad thing about Dexter, which leads me to believe it should take the award. However, Boardwalk Empire has also gotten great reviews – I just feel like it may be a little early in the game for it to win.

Best Actress – TV Drama:

Nominees: Julianna Margulies for The Good Wife; Elisabeth Moss for Mad Men; Piper Perabo for Covert Affairs; Katey Sagal for Sons of Anarchy; Kyra Sedgwick for The Closer

Who WILL Win: Julianna Margulies

Who SHOULD Win: Elisabeth Moss

I’m sorry, I don’t even want to explain this one.

Best Actor – TV Drama:

Nominees: Steve Buscemi for Boardwalk Empire; Bryan Cranston for Breaking Bad; Michael C. Hall for Dexter; Jon Hamm for Mad Men; Hugh Laurie for House

Who WILL Win: Michael C. Hall or Steve Buscemi

Who SHOULD Win: Michael C. Hall

As I said before, Dexter is amazing. And Michael C. Hall does a great job as the lead character. He would definitely deserve the award, although it might be nice to see Steve Buscemi win after he’s finally the star in something so great.

Best TV Show – Comedy:

Nominees: 30 Rock; The Big Bang Theory; The Big C; Glee; Modern Family; Nurse Jackie

Who WILL Win: Nurse Jackie, Modern Family, or Glee

Who SHOULD Win: Glee or Modern Family

Obviously, it was difficult for me to make a decision here. Nurse Jackie won big at the Emmy’s which leads me to believe it might do the same here. But Modern Family and Glee will definitely be tough competition. They’re both huge fan and critic favorites.

Best Actress – TV Comedy:

Nominees: Toni Collette for United States of Tara; Edie Falco for Nurse Jackie; Tina Fey for 30 Rock; Laura Linney for The Big C; Lea Michele for Glee

Who WILL Win: Edie Falco

Who SHOULD Win: Tina Fey

Just like I said before, Nurse Jackie could be winning big during this show – and Edie Falco has always been a favorite choice. But so has Tina Fey! I’m so….torn!

Best Actor – TV Comedy:

Nominees: Alec Baldwin for 30 Rock; Steve Carell for The Office; Thomas Jane for Hung; Matthew Morrison for Glee; Jim Parsons for The Big Bang Theory

Who WILL Win: Steve Carell

Who SHOULD Win: Steve Carell

Steve Carell has won before, and for good reason. And while he’s got some stiff competition, this being his last season on The Office has most people thinking that he could take it one last time.

Best Supporting Actress – TV:

Nominees: Hope Davis for The Special Relationship; Jane Lynch for Glee; Kelly MacDonald for Boardwalk Empire; Julia Stiles for Dexter; Sofia Vergara for Modern Family

Who WILL Win: Jane Lynch

Who SHOULD Win: Jane Lynch or Sofia Vergara

Jane Lynch is SO GOOD as Sue! But Sofia Vergara is so good as Gloria! I need a brownie.

Best Supporting Actor – TV:

Nominees: Scott Caan for Hawaii Five-O; Chris Colfer for Glee; Chris Noth for The Good Wife; Eric Stonestreet for Modern Family; David Strathairn for Temple Grandin

Who WILL Win: Eric Stonestreet

Who SHOULD Win: Eric Stonestreet

Come on, this guy is the bomb.com. Yeah, I said it.

We’ll be live-blogging the Golden Globes this Sunday at 8p.m. EST. Grab your laptop (and wine), turn on your TV (and pour some wine) and watch it all unfold with us (while drinking wine).

Even Hollywood Starlets Have Bad Weeks

I’ll admit it, I’m (extremely) jealous of the Hollywood A-Listers’ lives. They have perfect bodies, perfect teeth, skin, boyfriends/girlfriends, houses and careers! Not to mention the loads of money they have from all of their hit movies/TV shows/albums/random endorsements (Proactive, anyone?). They get to live in exotic places, travel to even more exotic places, and never have to wear anything twice. Plus, they have people waiting on them hand and foot. Come on, just once I’d love to pass off doing my laundry to someone else.

But I’m beginning to see that maybe their lives aren’t total perfection. Yes, like Us Weekly tells us every Wednesday, stars really are just like us, and that means that they can have rough weeks too. In fact, their bad weeks make my “OMG, I have 3 tests and Gossip Girl isn’t on and I just tore my Sevens when I was doing my post-laundry lunges!” week seem like a walk in the park.

Style Idol: Glamour Goddess, Dita Von Teese

[Celebrities get paid to look good and serve as a style guide to all us common folk, and part of looking good is flaunting their totally awesome fashion sense. Each week, I will be highlighting my Style Idol of the week: a celebrity who consistently shows keen fashion sense and whose closet I would raid in a heartbeat.

Of course, no celebs are immune to the occasional “what the hell were they thinking?” moment, but for the most part, these celebs look foxy and fabulous and inspire us all to do the same.]

Dita Von Teese is famous for her infinitely sexy burlesque act (I actually saw her perform at a small party a few years back, and let me say, it is quite spectacular), and for having been married to freakish Marilyn Manson. Lately, however, she has been getting a new sort of notoriety: for her fabulous style.

Dita stands on her own as the Diva of Retro. She pulls off this look with vintage-inspired clothing, dramatic coloring and her signature pin-up hair and ruby red lips. She is a dream for many couture designers such as Marchesa, Vivienne Westwood, Roland Mouret and Christian Dior/John Galliano, as their gowns perfectly hug her amazing and almost unbelievable hourglass figure. She accentuates the beauty of her classic looks by adding fun and flirty accessories like sky-high heels and funky hats.

Dita embodies glamour like no one else and makes it look effortless in the process; that’s enough for me (or anyone) to consider her a Style Idol of our time.

This weekend is the only thing that stands between me and Chace Crawford.

Of course, I’m talking about the season premiere of Gossip Girl, which airs Monday, September 1 at 8:00 on the CW Network.

Since my life pretty much sucks– I’m not currently sleeping with anyone, I’m spending my “new clothes” money on speeding tickets, and I can barely afford my daily latte, let alone an extra-dry martini or a burlesque business venture–I’m looking forward on living vicariously through Dan, Jenny, Serena, Blair, Chuck, and, oh yes- Nate.

When GG left us at the beginning of the summer (which feels like eons ago), Serena’s brother, Eric, had just come out of the closet; Georgina had stopped into town just long enough to break up Serena and Dan; Chuck briefly scraped together an ounce of morale, only to eye-f*ck Amelia, Lily’s new interior designer; Blair hopped a plane with some random dude; and it seems that Serena and Nate and Dan and Vanessa were left to hang out for the summer.

Oh, there’s also the middle-aged love triangle between Chuck’s dad, Serena’s mom, and Dan’s dad, and Lily married Bart right after confessing her love to Rufus. Seriously, forty, and you’re still playing love games? Whatever. I’m sure this plot line will bring barrels of drama to the small screen this season.

Wow. Sometimes its hard to believe that GG has only been on for one season! We’ve already seen sex, lies, betrayal, bulimia, kids on suicide watch, theft, more sex, underage girls getting wasted and performing a strip tease in a night club, sex in a limo, cocaine, and Jenny’s perpetually uphill struggle to fit in.

What’s Season 2 going to throw at us? We’ll find out beginning on Monday. For now, here’s a sneak peek of our favorite guilty pleasure, with episode recaps coming at you every week!



So You Have A Problem With Strip Clubs?

Are you one of those girls with a problem with strip/burlesque clubs?  If the answer is YES, please proceed to paragraph number 1 and then read 2. If the answer is NO, please proceed to paragraph number 2.
1.  Well, alright.  I get it.  You have respect for a woman’s body and sexuality, right?  Watching men drool over a woman’s body with whom they have no personal, let alone emotional, connection with whatsoever is sickening, right?
Something about the placing of a dollar bill in a thong makes you want to barf.   And the idea of your boyfriend/husband/love interest being the guy with the dollar bill is just thoroughly intolerable, right?  After all, if you two are involved, he should only think about and see your body sexually, right?  He should not be involved with the chauvinist society of strip club going men.  That would make him much more like a slime ball than the perfect guy you THINK you’re dating.
But THINK is the key word here, ladies.  I beg of you to place yourself in the mindset of the girls who have proceeded directly to paragraph 2.  Suspend your opinions at least momentarily if you can.
2.  Girls who are OK with strip clubs seem to all agree on a few things:
A.  Strip clubs are not degrading.  Rather, they’re kind of exalting of the woman’s body if anything.  These girls are making so much money for a reason:  they are harnessing their sexuality and empowering themselves with it.
B.  All men have a percentage of pig in them.  If you’re going to go ahead and believe your man when he tells you that a gorgeous, naked woman dancing in front of him is not arousing; then you’re an idiot.
This is what I call an animal instinct.  It’s there, it’s natural, and it has NOTHING to do with whether or not he loves you.  Strip clubs do bring out this element in men.  But if you keep trying to repress this, you might as well go date the woman you’re trying to turn him into.
C.  We all know that confidence is what’s sexiest of all.  Having had friends who have been and are strippers, I can tell you one thing for damn sure:  A girl who hates stripping doesn’t last more than a few nights…if even one.
Strippers today, in a world where women can get any job of their choosing (even without a degree, they could choose something besides stripping if they wanted), are confident.  They are not being forced into a bad, dark place where they have to take off their clothes as their only means to eat.  Instead, they have actually embraced their sexuality on a professional level.
I must admit, if I had been reading this blog, I would have had to go straight to paragraph 2.  Having once had a serious issue with porn and strip clubs and all other outlets of “inappropriate” sexuality; I have finally learned that sex comes in many levels…but primarily:  Lustsex and Lovesex.
If your lovesex with a gentleman is truly lovesex; lustsex poses no threat to you.  Remember, confidence is what’s sexy and there’s nothing more unsexy than a girl whining about the guys wanting to go to the strip club to celebrate something some Saturday night instead of coming to your tea party.  If this is you, again, I beg you, just please go date the woman you’re trying to turn him into instead.  (But let me warn you:  she’ll probably be into hot chicks being naked, too.  I’m just sayin’…)

         


Dita Von Teese Gives Away the Farm

Ohh, burlesque, how I love you. You’re just like porn, but with a sense of humor. You twirl scarves and finger fringe and lolligag in giant champagne glasses. You skip to Stealers Wheel and swivel hips to Johnny Hawksworth. You toss horn-rimmed glasses asunder and let down your hair before tearing buttons from blouses and revealing boned corsets. You’re such a tortuous tease!
And speaking of teasing, what about your current spokeswoman, Dita Von Teese? You couldn’t have picked a better representative for your culture. A 22” waist – which can be laced down to a 16 incher – with raven hair and milk skin… all she needs is seven or so dwarves and she’d be Snow White incarnate.
That said, I am devastated to see that she has crossed that delicate, seemingly ineffable line between bare burlesque and pure pornography. After spending years leaving just enough to our imaginations, she has spread her legs for the latest issue of Penthouse. The fantasy has been destroyed. Meh.
At least she still looks beautiful.
