Who or what inspires your style? Many of us use actresses (like Lisa Bonet) or movie characters (like Lux Lisbon) as style inspiration, even though, most of the time, they are being dressed from head to toe by the best stylists.

Which we don’t have.

And sometimes it’s damn near impossible to work their Hollywood looks into our not-so-Hollywood lives. I’ve made it my mission to tap into the mind of a fashion stylist and show you how to take your style inspiration – whatever it may be – and make it more you!

At one point in my life, there was a time when I did think Sarah Silverman was absolutely high-larious on her show, The Sarah Silverman Program. Unfortunately, those days have long since passed, but I’m still left with something about her that I admire.

Besides her ability to nonchalantly rock a mustache at a super-formal event, surprisingly, it’s also her style.

Just to be clear, though: it’s not Sarah’s red carpet looks that I covet. While she has been known to work corsets, ball gowns and sexy frocks to big-time events, that side of Sarah’s style doesn’t interest me because, 1) she often makes major fashion mistakes and 2) she looks so…not Sarah (and really, painfully uncomfortable).

The Sarah Silverman style I love is her everyday, low key, totally casual, I don’t give a sh*t, look. On a normal day Sarah doesn’t do much to make herself look like anything special.  Her typical uniformed style is a track jacket, jeans, Converse and her hair in a ponytail.  Ravishing?  Ehhh, maybe not to some; lord knows Joan Rivers wouldn’t have nice things to say about it. But I think that style is Sarah and it sets her apart, in a good way.  Most celebrities in movies or on TV have to constantly make sure they look perfect, almost like the audience should strive to look like them.  But Sarah, on the other hand, would rather just be real and look like the audience themselves.

Sarah’s style is not typically what someone who has any interest in fashion would take to be iconic, but for some reason I do.   It’s goofy and casual.  It’s worn by mostly everyone, but she still totally Sarah. And it’s easy to incorporate into your style because the goal is not only to not try too hard, but to not try at all.

And, if you think about it, while she’s not draping herself from head to toe in the latest trends or looking to Rachel Zoe for style assistance, Sarah does posess a lil’ somethin’ somethin’ that other fashion icons also have: that magical ability to not give a rat’s ass how people think of her. If you rock that confidence, you can go far with your style, whatever it may be, and probably even make wearing Tamagotchi’s on your belt loops look cool again.

Ring, Jacket, Jeans, Tee, Sneakers

This t-shirt and jeans combination is probably worn by everyone in our generation, so add some sass to it.  Tight skinny jeans and a distressed/well-fitting, funny t-shirt add the casual and goofy staples to the outfit without looking sloppy.  The track jacket is one of Sarah’s famous “pieces,” so add one to your outfit in an eye-catching color that will brighten up the look a little bit more. (If track jackets don’t do it for you, go for a bright colored casual cardigan instead. The look is a little bit less Sarah that way, but you still get the essence of casual cool she exudes.)

Throw on the mustache ring to add some novelty and silliness and classic Converse sneakers, which go perfectly with the entire look (I love them paired with skinny jeans) and seem to be Sarah’s favorite shoes.

And there you go. Done and done. Just don’t start talking about still being a bedwetter or your bowel movements and you can look like Sarah without being as…open…as Sarah.

Well no more. Thanks to this kick ass belt (I am a firm believer that big belts make everything better) we now have two trusty ‘fits for those nights where anything goes. Both of these looks can be dressed up (with a quick swap of heels instead of those boots) and can be worn right into Spring. Because a stylista as budgety as yourself knows the importance of versatility!

The Big Belt With a Dress
If there’s one thing I know it’s that some things are worth spending on. And this belt is definitely one of them. It’s versatile, it makes a statement and it’s the perfect transition piece. The wooden beads scream summer, but the brown makes it heavy enough to wear now.

You can work this belt with just about anything, but I love it next to the bright hue of this dress. And have you seen the back? Hello there, sexy. Obviously the dress is great on it’s own, but adding the belt and covering up that bow takes a simple sheath and make it a little less simplified. Throw in the hair clip and some flat brown boots and you’re ready for some techno and an overpriced drink, or some 80s live-band-karaoke and a $2 beer.

The Big Belt with Jeans
Wood, coral and turquoise may just be the best combination EVER. So obviously this is a look I am obsessed with. Throw a cardigan over the top for now and, come summer, swap out the boots for some flat woven sandals or cork wedges. This ensemble is easy and chic and just screams “Looking this good just comes naturally to me” and what better message could you send?

She’s a senior and while she may be dealing with a bad case of Senioritis, her style certainly isn’t. No matter what time she wakes up in the morning – sometimes ten minutes before class…and sometimes ten minutes after it’s started – Jessica always stays fly and manages to pull on something cute. Even if its her simple staple look – one of her many v-necks, a scarf, and a pair of comfy jeans. She just makes everything look good. What got me to notice her in a sea of students wearing jeans and v-necks, though?

Her hot pink Longchamp bag and a fantastically contrasting bright scarf. This girl just knows how to stand out.

1) Describe your personal style.

I’ve never really defined my personal style; it’s pretty eclectic and definitely varies with my mood. I’m from San Francisco and people sometimes tell me I have that easy-going West Coast vibe: skinny jeans, colorful Chucks, v-neck tee, and scarf. I love v-neck tees and have them in every color. Sometimes I’ll feel more girly and wear a pretty sundress with sandals or flip-flops (never heels, just too uncomfortable for me). I don’t know, I go through phases! I’ve been through a punk phase, a boho phase, a hipster phase…I don’t have much time to get ready in the morning, though, so I definitely go for something comfortable and easy to wear.

2) You can’t leave your house without your ________.

Bright pink Longchamp bag! I carry it every day whether I’m going to class or just going out to dinner with friends. I can fit everything in it, including my laptop! I also love how it’s so bright and goes with basically any outfit.

3) Name your favorite store.

I absolutely love this online boutique called 80′s purple; it’s an eclectic mix of basics and bolder, more “out-there” looks. I also love shopping in boutiques in Hong Kong (you can get designer clothes at much cheaper prices), and you can never go wrong with Forever21!

4) What/who is the biggest influence on your style?

I can’t really pinpoint one influence. I guess I just absorb what I see in the media, magazines, and on my friends – and then choose my own style from there!

5) What’s your favorite trend, past or present?

Scarves. I LOVE scarves – all types! I have at least twenty from all over the world. Whenever I travel, I always pick up a few from whichever country I’m in at the time.

I’ve known Meagan since elementary school, and she’s always been one of the happiest people I know (she’s a cheerleader so she has to be, I guess). Her clothing choices are always full of color and spunk, and she is the definition of cute: a tiny body with a big personality that shines through her outfits. She doesn’t sacrifice comfort for fashion, however, because she believes that fashion is not necessarily about looking good, but feeling good. And that is the most inspiring thing I’ve heard about fashion in a long, long time.

I don’t idolize a celebrity or a specific designer or anything. I’m influenced the most by my friends, and usually I just wear what’s most comfortable. For me fashion isn’t about looking your best, it’s about feeling your best.

Graphic tees are a fun, comfortable way to express your individuality and style (sorry, your “I LOVE BEER” shirt doesn’t count…), without breaking the bank. Every one of us has at least one that we enjoy wearing on a regular basis, but most likely we are wearing it simply with a pair of jeans or some sweatpants for the sake of comfort. While Jon Gosselin ruined graphic tees for the world, if done right (Read: not over-the-top and obnoxious), they are a simple and fun way to add some serious cool to any outfit.

Here are some ideas to re-work the graphic tee with some other items you’ve already got lying around.

1. Wear it under a jacket.

We all have at least one type of jacket in our closet, whether it be a a basic suit jacket, denim jacket, or cropped. The structure of the jacket adds a bit of class and makes the outfit look a bit more put-together, while the graphic tee adds an edge to an otherwise simple (or stuffy) outfit. An easy accessory to dress up the outfit even more is a long necklace, preferably one that is not too over-the-top. You don’t want to overdo it, after all.

Oh and, for the love of Anna Wintour, PLEASE, don’t pair a denim jacket with jeans. No one wants to end up on a Glamour “Don’t” page along with the old picture of Justin and Britney in their matching head-to-toe denim tuxedos. Eek.

2. Wear it with a vest.

The graphic tee looks great with a longer sweater vest or  a shorter suit-inspired vest for an added layer of style. This look is perfect for a polished casual look with jeans, or even a night out with some hot dark denim or black pants with some sexy pumps. Adding a long necklace or scarf will complete the look and take you from “jeans and a tee” to “totally chic and put together.”

3.  Wear it with a long-sleeved shirt.

I know, I know; picturing this style may remind you of your high school days or fall American Eagle or Gap catalogs, but you can make this outfit look stylish so that you can show off creative graphic tees even in cooler weather. Try to coordinate a different-colored long-sleeved tee under. For example, a more neutral graphic tee could use a fun, bright long-sleeved tee underneath. Conversely, wearing a more neutral tone under a colorful graphic tee will ensure that the tee is the focal point. Make sure to pull down the long-sleeve tee so that the bottom pops out from under the graphic tee near your hips. This look also looks great with a thinner scarf!

While these may be simple adjustments, when grabbing a graphic tee out of your closet, many times the temptation is to wear it alone as part of a casual outfit. This way, you can get an extra bang for your buck by being able to wear your graphic tees for all sorts of occasions- regardless of whether they are casual (pong tournament!) or on a hot date!

Since guys can turn to the interwebs to get their daily fantasy fix, we thought you should, too! So, we’re bringing you some fashion porn. The best of the best in all things fashionable. Sure, it may be out of your price range, but it’s a fantasy, so live it up in all its delicious glory.

The t-shirt is arguably the most versatile item of clothing in a college girl’s closet. Though they originated as undershirts, the tee has come along way. Now it’s the perfect item for any occasion, whether you are picking up boys at the bar or rolling out of bed 5 minutes before class. T-shirts are no fuss, they don’t require ironing, and go with jeans, skirts and sweats!

Whether you are trying to make a statement, stand out from the crowd, or blend in to a lecture hall, there is a t-shirt out there for you. Want to hit the bar without looking like you tried too hard? Jeans and a t-shirt. Want to go casual cool when meeting up with the girls? Add a blazer and some choice accessories. Want to look uber chic for a martini party? Tuck a tee into a high waisted skirt and hit the town in those gladiator heels. You can also show off your love for 80s pop stars or subtly declare your love for College Candy without ever saying a word.

So no matter what look you’re going for, there is a tee (or multiples in multitudes of colors) our there for you. I love ‘em all, and here are some of my favorites:

Things that are so cute, everyone should know about them. We’ll share ‘em with you here (because we’re that nice), but as far as actually getting them goes….well, you’re on your own with that one.]

If you’ve been looking for something a little different to spice up your everyday wardrobe, this unique piece by Zinc may just be the answer. This sheer top is super easy, super cute and super duper flattering on everyone. It features feminine, multicolored embroidery on the front and back as beautiful lace runs along the top at the neckline. The black and lace provides a more mature look while the colorful floral embroidery gives it a girly feel. A cinched waist shows off your curves as the lower half flows over nicely over your hips.

This wonderful tunic is definitely a better alternative to pair with your jeans than any one of those twenty t-shirts you have hanging in your closet (or crumpled up on your floor…). It is more stylish and chic without looking too much like a “night outfit.” When you’re not sure what to wear, put on this elaborate top, some jeans, maybe a few bangles, and you’ll have a great outfit that looks totally put together without looking as though you put in a lot of effort… because you didn’t.

You probably have a blazer.

Your mom made you buy it and now the only time you pull it out of your closet is for job interviews and funerals. Other than that, it just hangs there and takes up space that would be better suited for a new pair of sweats. But your basic black blazer (like the one pictured right, from Old Navy) can be very stylish and versatile!

Wear it during the day to your internship for a mature (but not “old”) look, or to dress up a pair of jeans on the weekend.

Here are three new ideas for rocking a black (or whatever color you might have) blazer.

1) Polished & Professional. At work, you want to look put together without dressing like you’re 30 years old. The blazer is perfect. Just pair it with a basic fitted shirt (like a tank) and pants that don’t match exactly (to avoid looking like Hilary Clinton in a pantsuit). Then style it with fun jewelry or a belt, a hot pair of heels and you’ve got a new, go-to work look! Click on the image to view shopping info:

2) Casual Chic. When you’re heading out for a day of shopping or errands, it’s easy to fall into the rut of jeans, t-shirt, flip flops (or Uggs, depending on the weather). By throwing on a blazer, it’s easy to look chic while stocking up on Chef Boyardee and Ramen. Wear it unbuttoned with rolled up skinny jeans, a white tee, and basic heels (OK, you can wear flats if you’re really feeling lazy). North Face fleeces and hooded sweatshirts – you’ve met you’re match!

3) Nighttime Glam. We’re in that weird season between summer and spring right now, where it’s too warm for sweaters but not quite warm enough for tank tops. This problem is easily solved with a black blazer – wearing one over your sparkly tank top or mini dress will make you look glamorous and stylish when you’re out on the town. And your boyfriend will be happy that he won’t have to give you his!

Relaxed fit pants are the must-have silhouette for spring 2009. With the correct fit, they strike the perfect balance between appearing effortlessly chic and professionally appropriate. They can be worn for a day out, a night out, or even to your summer internship.

But without the correct fit, they can also go horribly, horribly wrong.

When you try them on, make sure they are fitted in the waist and butt. They should be looser and more relaxed over your thighs, and tapered and cropped above your ankles.

Since cropped pants can make your legs seem shorter, wear heels to balance everything out if you’re on the petite side. If you’re taller, pair them with heels or wedges for a dressier look, or flat gladiator sandals for a more casual vibe. Just stay away from ballet flats.

Because you’re going loose on your bottom half, you’ll want to wear a more fitted top. A tucked in blouse works for a more professional setting.
