Oh Mary Kate and Ashley; you do fashion so well!

Whether it’s a good idea or not, celebrities love to have a hand in every possible arena. From recording contracts to fragrance deals to hair extension lines, if they have the opportunity to further their status, they will do so without question.

Unfortunately, because of this, many celebrity crossover lines and products are sub par. On the other hand, however, there are some celebrities who have done it right. Intrigued? Keep reading for our five favorite celebrity clothing lines.

Elizabeth & James by Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen

Self described as embodying an “eclectic lifestyle by blending uptown and downtown elements with casual and traditional style,” Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen’s Elizabeth and James collection is “trend conscious, yet timeless.”

Named after the twins’ brother and sister and launched in 2007, Elizabeth and James features clothing, shoes, accessories and a newly added menswear branch. As the Olsen’s third venture into fashion, Elizabeth and James is a pseudo-luxury brand, priced lower than their high-end collection The Row, and priced higher than their Mary-Kate and Ashley line for discount stores. Popular with the celebrity set, Elizabeth and James designs have been seen on Dakota Fanning, Kristin Cavallari, and Jessica Simpson, just to name a few.

Why We Love It

Ever since I first heard the words, “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times…Actually it was bedtime,” I have been a Mary-Kate and Ashley devotee. In the 90s, MK&A were the girls who felt like your best friends. I grew up watching the girls first on “Full House,” then “Two of a Kind,” and finally, “So Little Time.” Beyond their enviable acting careers, however, the girls have grown into fashionistas in their own right, making headlines with their unique hippie-grunge-bohemian style.

Naturally, when I heard that the twins were teaming up to create their own high-fashion line, I was intrigued. Today, I can almost always look to Elizabeth and James for some fashion inspiration. Ruffled dresses? Oxfords? Boyfriend blazers? They’ve got it all, and their pieces are always styled in a way that looks both effortless and chic.

Mary-Kate and Ashley’s collection of smart, modified-basics is totally crave-worthy, and always on my radar… though their pieces are not so college-budget friendly. So how to get it? Whether you save for months, score a super-marked-down piece on ShopBop or opt for the Forever 21 knock-offs, if you want it, there’s a way to posses a little bit of MK&A style.

Flesh-colored leotards, thigh high boots, Mardi Gras-inspired masks, wacky hats and a ton of camel-toes, Lady Gaga has done it all, and she leaves little to the imagination. Nevertheless, La Gaga says she plans on starting her own clothing line. Because that makes sense.

Obviously what this world needs is another awful celebrity clothing line/more leotards with feathers, ruffles and our favorite childhood puppets sewed on.  I am not sure what to expect from Gaga’s line, but I know for a fact there will be a lot of pantsless-models walking around New York Fashion Week next year.

And just for the record, THIS is the woman who wants to be a fashion designer….

This scares me. A lot.

Instead of trusting the business intuition of people who made it big on their ability to look pretty and stand on cue (really – who needs another celebrity perfume??), we decided to make our own list of celebrity products that are more appropriate to the celebrities themselves:

We can only hope that these products (well, maybe not all of them) see the glorious light of day in a display window someday soon.  We’ll get our checkbooks ready, just in case.

Nickelodeon sweetheart (has-been? has-she-ever-been?) Amanda ‘A is for awkward’ Bynes will be introducing her new clothing line, Dear, in Steve & Barry’s stores on August 16th. Police are still in the process of investigating which hallucinogens Steve and/or Barry were on when the line was approved.

If you were one of the innocent channel surfers who fell to witness Bynes’ tragic sitcom flop on her show with Jennie Garth and that guy from Saturday morning TV circa 1998, I’m sure you are shaking your head in utter confusion to this painful news.

If you, in even more dreadful circumstances, were unjustly subjected to that She’s the Man soccer flick where not even Channing Tatum’s fantastically sculpted abs could pardon a pre-pubescent male-disguised Bynes who seemed misled to believe that apparently speaking under the guise of a muddled Southern accent would make her seem more manly, then you will undoubtedly be unable to fathom my next five words: her clothing line is worse.

Having taken a peek at what’s in store, I can’t help but wonder what rock I was living under when plastic beaded jewelry and clothing adorned in hot pink hearts and stars became the new runway chic. I’d bet a Benjamin that Bynes wouldn’t even wear that mess.

The whole appeal of clothing lines at Steve & Barry’s is, celebrity style for under twenty, correct? But the unfortunate truth is that the only people willing to be caught dead in such a get up as the ones Dear’s put together, would be my senile great grandmother who tends to think her cat is an ottoman, or my four-year-old cousin, who can spend up to six hours talking to herself inside of a cardboard box.

I understood the Bitten attempt, Sex & the City for cheapies, it made sense. But this? Bynes? Why.
