Another day, another former child star gets arrested. But this one makes me sad. Amanda Bynes was arrested for DUI last night in West Hollywood after clipping a cop car as she tried to pass. Yeah, that’s a pretty good way to get yourself arrested. I used to be such a huge Amanda Bynes fan! I loved her on All That and The Amanda Show back in the day, but it seems like she’s been having a hard time these past few years. Remember her weird retirement announcement on Twitter.

I really hope Amanda’s not heading down LiLo’s path. Her mug shot is pretty awful. She’s got some awkwardly colored pinkish purple hair, and heavy eye makeup. Child stars all grown up – how are they doing?

Recently some super hot pictures of Jonathan Lipnicki came out. Who?! Remember the kid from Jerry McGuire and Stuart Little? Yeah, that’s him. Age has been very good to this guy. Very good. Oh and he also just turned 21. I wonder if he’d let us do a body shot off those abs. As I write, I solemnly swear I did not just make him my desktop. Don’t worry, we’ll be seeing a lot more of him as he prepares for a comeback.

Remember when Shia Labeouf was a dorky but lovable younger brother on Even Stevens? It seems the memories of Louis and his practical jokes have been lost to terrible hair, unruly facial hair and awkwardly bulked up muscles. (Seriously, you need to click through to see Shia in his current state. No words, people. No. Words.) He used to be such a cute muffin but after seeing those photos I’m left with visions of neanderthals and creepy lawyers with slicked back hair. He needs to transform back to his presentable-self, ASAP.

Like many of you, we were really upset yesterday to see that Demi Lovato had to leave her tour and check herself into to a treatment center for unspecified reasons. Self mutilation, eating disorders, and general self-esteem issues aren’t a joke and we don’t find them funny. That’s why we cover these topics on a regular basis in a serious way.

So when we asked a writer to talk about Demi and her relation to the Disney curse, we were not attempting to turn her problems into a laughing matter. We were instead, pointing out the obvious. Several of the successful Disney teen stars have ended up going to rehab for a variety of problems. It’s undeniable that it’s related to being a child star. Being a teenager is hard enough — let alone being a teenager in the national spotlight.

Disney turns these regular children into super-humans. 14 year-olds are expected to keep up the perfect Disney image, to be national role models while living in one of the most unhealthy environments in the country. So when a Disney star decides she’s done being a Disney girl, she has to go to extremes to break out of that mold. Demi went to extremes. And now she’s in a treatment center.

She is the culmination of a trend that started in the 80’s and 90’s of the “cool mom”. The era of the MILF, moms started focusing on being cool and fun, and along the way, forgot how to be MOMS.

These days, raising a child is all about raising their self esteem—telling them they can achieve whatever they want if they put their mind to it, no matter the odds. While this is an inspiring message, it can be deceiving if say, your child wants to be a singer but cracks glass with their voice.
