This week, the Golden Globes happened along with a lot of other fun stuff! Celebs got pissed, celebs got engaged, celebs broke up, and some celebs even had secret babies! All in all, a well-rounded week, I’d say.

Back To The Semester Parties

1. You’ll probably never see Ricky Gervais at the Golden Globes again. Despite the fact that he did a hilarious job of hosting the Golden Globes, which would have been utterly dull without him, Ricky Gervais’s jokes are being slammed by the majority of Hollywood. Why? I guess because he made fun of both Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp within the first five minutes (I guess Hollywood royalty isn’t used to being picked on…), he trashed the members of the Hollywood Foreign Press, and according to some people, he just went ‘too far’ with the jokes he made about Robert Downey Jr., Bruce Willis, and Tom Cruise. There were tons of rumors that he was asked to never return – but apparently, Ricky has made that decision on his own. Can we pull the stick out of Hollywood’s Botox-injected butt, please?

2. Halle Berry is having baby daddy drama. She’s going into a custody battle with her ex, Gabriel Aubry, over their daughter Nahla. He wants to be officially declared the father, and wants joint custody of his daughter. Can’t really blame the guy, can you? Their break-up seemed pretty friendly, but let’s see what happens when the court gets involved.

3. Anne Hathaway had a great week – not only has it been announced that she’ll be making an appearance on Glee, but she was also cast as Catwoman in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises. I guess we’ll find out if Anne has the vocal ability to hold her own on Glee, and the body to pull off that catsuit. All that and the fact that she gets to host the Oscars with James Franco AND got to make out with Jake Gyllenhaal for a movie makes me kind of hate her… and want her life.

4. Kanye West is PISSED. Earlier this week, the rapper made a little joke on his Twitter about Britney Spears: “I’mma let you be #1, but me and Jay-Z single is one of the best songs of all time!” Britney’s manager replied with, “Thanks for letting us be #1. Much appreciated.” The whole thing was obviously a joke, with Kanye kind of making fun of himself. But the media blew the entire thing out of proportion (WHAT? I know, that never happens), and Kanye was not very happy about it. He wrote a little blog about it, saying “This sh*t takes the air out of my lungs sometimes from blogs to news reports… enough already!!” Amen, Kanye. AMEN.

5.  Nicole Kidman had a secret baby. Kind of. She and Keith Urban welcomed a daughter born through a surrogate mother. No one knew it was happening, so it was pretty random. Too bad this didn’t happen last week, when everyone in Hollywood decided to get pregnant.

Back To The Semester Studying

1. Regis Philbin is retiring. He’s leaving his long-standing post as the host of Live! With Regis and Kelly. Everyone is already wondering who will replace him… but no one seems to be too surprised. That dude is OLD.

2. The Coachella 2011 lineup was announced. If you live in California or near this area, just know that I am extremely jealous of you. Set to perform are Kanye West, Arcade Fire, Kings of Leon, Lauryn Hill, Interpol, Neon Trees, Jimmy Eat World, Duran Duran, and soooo many more. Tickets are almost $300 for the 3-day concert, but it’s also an amazing celeb-and-music filled event that everyone should experience. Like I said… jealous, from cold New York.

3. Jake Gyllenhaal was spotted with Camilla Belle, and the dating rumors immediately flooded the Internet. It WAS kind of a weird coincidence that right after he breaks up with Taylor Swift, he was spotted with her reported ‘enemy’. Oh man, I can’t wait to hear this song.

4. Don’t worry, ladies and guys – Pauly D is still single, as is January Jones. January Jones and her boyfriend, SNL star Jason Sudekis, broke up this week. Honestly, I had no idea they were dating (shameful for me to admit as a gossip blogger), but that sucks because she’s beautiful and he’s funny. And if you were hoping to run into Pauly D at a club and make out with him, you still can. He denied that he’s dating both Chloe Sevigny and Brittany Gastineau.

5. Two more Hollywood engagements: Jodie Sweetin, former Full House star, got engaged. Aw, Stephanie Tanner! But I can’t say I’m happy for these other two – Jesse James and Kat Von D. Ew. You deserve each other. (Sandra, you’re so much better).

March is Women’s History Month and in honor of that we’ve been taking some time to highlight and salute some female powerhouses that inspire us. There are just so many women out there doing incredible things, which is hard to remember when women tend only to get recognized for boobs (Heidi Montag), sex scandals (Tiger’s “friends”) and weight (Jessica Simpson). But they’re out there, doing their thing and inspiring us to break down barriers, go for our goals and be our best selves.

So who are these wonderful women? This week the CollegeCandy writers share who inspires them most. Who inspires you?

Kelly – University of Iowa: Definitely my mom. She didn’t go to college but still managed to work her way up the corporate ladder to a wonderful, well-paying job and always tries to instill the same values into me.

Ness – Sheridan: As weird as it sounds, probably Sue Johanson. I’ve grown up watching her shows, and I think she’s both hilarious and incredibly smart. I just wanna hug her!

Jessica – Hofstra: Anna Wintour, the editor-in-chief of Vogue. She’s probably the most powerful woman in the fashion and magazine industry. She might be tough but she has also achieved an enormous amount and I can only wish to be that successful.

Amanda – Reed: Michelle Obama! That woman is fierce. She went to Princeton and Harvard, has an awesome sense of style, and has the most amazing arms on the planet. Seriously, what is up with those? I’m jealous.

Lauren – University of Michigan: Definitely Tina Fey. She’s proved time and again that women can be funny. And she doesn’t use sex or cleavage to do it.

Alex – Lakehead University: Strong women inspire me. Any women who is a survivor inspires me :cancer survivors, war survivors, abuse survivors.

Caitlin – University of Alabama: My best friend inspires me most because she is so comfortable with herself and I wish I could be like that all the time.

Leah – Ryerson University: Stephanie Nolen – she’s currently in India reporting for The Globe and Mail.

Brithny – Duke: Beyonce, because she is truly an amazing role model. She works hard for everything she has, including her ass-ets.

Brittany – University of Saint Thomas: My Mother, and Chelsea Handler. In that order.

Nina – Michigan State University: Both of my grandmothers have their own inspirational stories. They immigrated from Italy and Syria as teenagers, and their lives have been so full of hardship and sadness, but they still find so much to smile and laugh about everyday! I’m lucky to have such a strong, positive female role models so close to me.

Jessica – Delaware: I know this is cheesy, by my mom inspires me the most. She has Chron’s disease and is constantly in and out of the hospital, but still manages to have a positive outlook and put others before herself. She inspires me to be more giving and selfless!

Cristina – Michigan State: I wish I could say my mom but I’m going to have to say Chloe Sevigny for sure.  Sorry ma!

Sarabeth – University of Texas: After the Oscar’s my inspiration comes from Kathryn Bigelow. She’s the first woman to win best director and she beat her ex-husband doing it. You go girl.

Meg – University of Delaware: I’m going to have to be cheesy and say my Mom. She’s worked really hard and had a sucessful career while balancing family life and raising three kids. I only hope to emulate her as I grow older.

Charlsie – Hollins University: I can’t pick one woman who inspires me. All the women in my life inspire me on a daily basis, whether it’s my hardworking mom or my young and optimistic sister. Even women who aren’t a part of my everyday life inspire me. Seeing the work that blogger Jessica Valenti has accomplished in the last few years inspires me to strive towards a higher standard of feminism, just as much as Lady Gaga’s unique style and personality reminds me to stay true to myself.

Emmy – Loyola University Chicago: I know this sounds cheesy, but my high school soccer coach is one of the coolest people I’ve ever met. She balanced all the aspects of her life flawlessly and made me realize that I really can do it all.

Elizabeth – UC Berkeley: My Mom.  She’s sacrificed her life to better mine, and I can only hope to be half the woman and the mother that she is.

Rachael – University of Miami: My immediate answer is my mother since she’s handled so much in life with dignity and composure, and still manages to have a positive outlook on life, but I’d be remiss not to mention my other female inspirations: Secretary of State Hilary Clinton, former Secretary Madeline Albright, and Queen Rania, since all three are strong women with strong convictions and important issues that they specifically focus on (health care, peaceful foreign relations, and global education, respectively); Mary Wollstonecraft and Lucy Stone for defending the rights not only of women, but everyone; and, of course, Queen Elizabeth I, because a redheaded female with power is just awesome.

Christie – NC State: I know this is pretty cliche, but I’d have to say Mother Teresa really inspires me the most. She never thought about herself, and always put others first. She was passionate, and pursued her own goals rather than listening to what others had to say. Most of all, she was always kind to others, even if she didn’t feel like it. Who wouldn’t want to be like that?

Describing Chloe Sevigny’s style in one word would be like attempting to describe color to a blind man: Impossible.

She is a wild child with a wild style. It’s vintage-meets-designer, quirky, eccentric and European chic with just the perfect hint of grunge. It doesn’t sound like it would turn out well, but somehow Chloe works it. Not to mention that smirk she’s always sportin’ that says, “What I’m wearing right now is what you’re going to be wearing next month.” Only she’s not arrogant, which I totally would be if I had her ability to wear a potato sack and have a million people be inspired by it.

Although she works as an actress by day (most notably as the second wife on HBO’s series, Big Love) her newest job and eternal interest has always been related to fashion.  It has apparently always come easy to her, considering she never actually follows trends but seems to instead set them.

To name a few of her fashion accomplishments, we can start with the fact that she is the face of the fashion house Chloe, besides collaborating with Open Ceremony.  She also seems to always choose roles that have a very quirky-cool costume attached, and is constantly on the best-dressed list at every award show she attends. It is no surprise, then, that I am totally inspired by Chloe Sevigny and her fashion prowess, and want to make her look all my own.

This look is typical Chloe and I love it because it looks carefree and chic all at the same time. Wayfarer sunglasses add some edge to the romantic, floral, ’90s-style dress, and the baggy sweater hints at Parisian chic. The boots are unique, especially paired with socks, and wouldn’t work on most people. In fact, most people would look insane. But, somehow, they work  for Chloe and, if you rock her signature confidence, they will work for this look, too.

I have a good life: a job I love, a closet full of fantastic clothes, and some pretty rad friends and family. But even with all that I am always wondering what it would be like to trade places with someone else for a day.

Like my friend Amy – I’ve always wanted to know what it is like to have big boobs and a teeny, tiny waist. Or Octomom – spending a single day with 14 kids will teach me not to skip the condom when I’m in the heat of the moment. Or pretty much any celebrity with oodles of money and people bowing down to them wherever they go.

I’m pretty sure everyone – no matter how content – would give anything (even that coveted slice of drunken late-night pizza) to be someone else for one day. So this week I asked the CollegeCandy writers which celebrity they’d want to trade places with.

Who do you wanna be?

Thu – USC: I’d be Oprah and give away houses this time.

Kayla – California State University, Sacramento: Maybe I would be Heidi Montag. It might be nice to not have to use my brain for one day.

Kathryn – University of Wisconsin-Madison: I would want to trade places with Renee Zellweger. ONLY because she’s reportedly dating Bradley Cooper. Yum.

Elizabeth – UC Berkeley: Jennifer Aniston.  She’s hot and, let’s face it, everybody secretly roots for Team Aniston.

Brithny – Duke: Michelle Obama! ‘Cause then I’d be First Lady, have an awesome family (and cute dog), and tons of fabulous clothes.

Elise – Stanford: I’d be Padma Lakshmi -  total fox, AND she gets to sample all the deliciousness on Top Chef.

Cristina – Michigan State:  I’d have to say Chloe Sevigny.  She dresses like a boss and is so weird she’s cool.

Jill – University of Wisconsin: I want to trade places with whoever is dating Jason Segel. He’s funny, he’s tall and have you seen the full frontal nudity in Forgetting Sarah Marshall?

Desiree – Columbia University: I’d love to be Christina Hendricks, the woman who plays Joan Holloway on Mad Men. She’s really hot right now but not hot in a let’s-wait-to-see-how-she-screws-up-next way. Beauty, brains, sharp tongue, and she gets to raid the wardrobe closet!

Brittany – University of Richmond: I think I would be Brooke Hogan or Lady Gaga for a day. That way I can settle the age old man/woman debate. It would be for the greater good of society. I am philanthropic in that way.

Carly – Grinnell: This is a toughie, but I think I would love to be J.K. Rowling for a day so I could see what it’s like in her mind.

Ricki – University of Michigan: I need to be Heidi Klum.  I can speak in a cool accent, walk down the Victoria’s Secret runway, and discover if she actually is human since she is always working and has four kids and a hot hubby.

Kari – Florida State:  I would trade places with Robert Pattinson for the day, for three reasons and three reasons only. 1) Stare at myself naked in the mirror for a few hours, 2) Get drunk and chain smoke at the Chateau Marmont for no reason, 3) Make out with/ declare my love for Kristen Stewart in the most public way possible, just to see if I could beat Obama’s magazine cover record.

Ness – Sheridan: I would be Paris Hilton. Just to figure out why the hell she thinks she’s famous.

Elizabeth – University of Missouri: Rachel Zoe – I don’t know if she actually counts, but I would love to be able to wear anything in her closet for a day. Oh, and have Brad, aka the cutest guy on the planet, as my assistant.

John – UConn: Emma Watson is going to be a freshman at Brown, and I’m going to be a senior at UConn. I’d trade places with her in a heartbeat. Oh, to be a young girl again!

Mandy – Hofstra: I’d like to switch places with Jenna Dewan so I can do the nasty with Channing Tatum. Multiple times.

Sara C – Fordham: I would want to be Usain Bolt, the sprinter from Jamaica who just broke his own world record in the 100m dash (9.58 seconds, which translates to about 24 mph). How sick must it feel to be able to run that fast?!?

Sarabeth – University of Texas: Angelina Jolie. Save the world, take care of some adorable kids, AND sleep with Brad Pitt? Count me in.

Maddie – Tufts: Gisele. It’s pretty self explanatory. Plus I’ve always wanted to wear those Victoria’s Secret wings!

Alana – Boston University: I’d totally want to be Suri Cruise. She sits around all day, looks cute and gets to wear Burberry.

Historically, women have always been shoved into a little feminine box. We have always had to be proper – pinky out when drinking tea, crossing our legs at the ankle when sitting on the couch, letting the man make all the first moves. That trend has made its exit in the past 10 or so years, but for some reason, it still stuck around in the fashion world. Frilly dresses, delicate fabrics and beautifully crafted footwear are the staple of many women’s wardrobes.

But that custom’s days are also fleeting.

There is a new look making its way on runways from Paris to New York that is pairing the daintiness of yesteryear with the attitude of the modern day woman. And it is easy to do: the trick is to pump up the hardware on your feet and temper the volume of your dress so you look fresh and strong – not like Avril Lavigne.

Kate and Laura Mulleavy of NY-based design label Rodarte are pioneers in this new look, taking their line out of the box with wild footwear by oft-name-dropped shoe king, Christian Louboutin. “Loubous” designed for Rodarte have been garnished with seriously sinister-looking spikes of various shapes and sizes, straps galore, pyramid studs and zippers. Paired with a pair of fishnets and a barely there sheer frock, the Rodarte ladies are making a statement, loud and clear.

Other designers working this look are Chloe Sevigny for Opening Ceremony and Luella Bartley, who showed sweet liberty prints and ladylike frocks. Naughty and nice.

Don’t despair if you can’t shell out the cash for the designer version: Diane von Furstenberg’s Per Se pump already has the tough part of the look down with architectural angles and a flash of metal in the heel. When paired with a crepe-thin floaty tea dress, the desired effect is achieved.

It may seem like a difficult look to pull off, but try it. You will look fierce and feel….more fierce. Just go dancing in these spiked wonders at your own risk.

But, of course, have fun out there; we all know you’ve got a bad side.

Once upon a time in late 2006, I really needed a job. I hopped on Craigslist, blindly sent out a couple of resumes, sat back and watched the replies roll in. One such interview opportunity came from Soho’s own Pleats Please by Issey Miyake store. Why would anyone want to wear that many pleats?, I asked myself, unable to shake the image of Alicia Silverstone in Clueless from my head. So I never responded. And now I am regretting it. Not only have I discovered how the high-fashion futuristic feel of tiny knife pleats is about as far as one can get from looking like a “Baby One More Time” video reject; I have also learned that the construction of tightly-pleated fabric allows it to stand up and out in a way that wouldn’t otherwise happen with the same material components! Plus, the brand name is polite! Check out how Miyake’s pieces are made!

I know not everything I write about will be wearable or, mostly, affordable, for most college students, or most people. But, if you’re willing to try, there are probably plenty of look-alikes available at your local thrift shop. I just picked up a metallic blue crumpled/pleated dress at The Vintage Thrift Shop in Flatiron and a to-die-for black pleated scarf from Reminiscence in Chelsea. The aforementioned aren’t even wildly-priced designer vintage spots, but mid-to-low-priced stores, devoid of pretentious waif-like salesgirls to boot. SVA students, I hope you’re listening!

Concept: Weird/romantic fetish wear, a la Secretary

Remember when I implied that George Clooney was hot? Well, my hot old guy allegiance really lies with a man god by the name of James Spader. In 1996′s Crash, Spader played a man strangely turned on by car wrecks. On some serious TV show that I’ve only watched once because I saw his face while channel surfing, he played a very, very naughty lawyer — I think. And in 2002, he starred as Maggie Gyllenhaal’s sadomasochistic boss in critics’ darling Secretary.

A lot of people I know think Maggie Gyllenhaal kind of resembles a Pekingese. I think she is hot, sexy, serious about her craft and one pinchably-adorable mom. In any case, the outfits she wore in Secretary started out as drab (or, like, Chloe Sevigny’s character in Big Love) and, with just a shot of vulgarity, became the most interesting getups I’ve ever seen. Again, obviously, wearing (matte! Please keep it matte and out of the realm of PVC!) latex or a gag bit might be a bit of a distraction from your 11 AM calc lecture, but there are ways to spice up your standard going-out outfit.

What about a pair of seamed stockings (seen on the Secretary movie poster) with an otherwise demure, floaty floral frock, or some extra sharp stilettos with your skinny jeans and cardigan? The trick is to keep most of your look almost granny-sweet, and then to throw ‘em off with one telltale bad girl piece.

Just don’t file any lawsuits if you twist your ankle in those 5-inch pumps.

5. Monica Bellucci

If you have seen this woman, then I really don’t need to explain myself. In her mid-forties, she could kick almost any ingenue’s boney little ass with the sheer force of her heavy-lidded sexuality. She could probably snap Keira Knightley in half with a glance.

4. Kristen Bell

Usually I like my women with a little more meat on them, but Bell is just so damn cute and sassy that I can make an exception. She’s a master of comic timing, a self proclaimed “nerd”, and was named one of the world’s sexiest vegetarians in 2006. Also, Veronica Mars.

3. Gillian Anderson

Any actress voted “Most Likely to Be Arrested” and “Most Bizarre Girl” in her graduating class is alright in my book. Her level of badass is compounded, however, by being the star of one of the best television shows of all time, The X-Files. That her real personality and on screen persona are obviously so different just speaks to her range and ability as an actress. Also, she’s just generally amazing looking. How could you not love this woman?

2. Eva Green

This former bond girl is shrouded in a Gallic mystery that’s made her a wildly sought after actress after only having appeared in five movies (only two of them good). Also, she knows, better than any actress today, IMHO, how to sport the red lipstick. It just so happens that People Magazine has named her the World’s Worst Dresser. Obviously, People Magazine’s level of class is not to be questioned–just look at the cover of their Best/Worst Dressed issue. Anyway, the way she dresses is one of the things I like best about her. Like Chloe Sevigny, she’s not afraid to be odd and express her oddness through fashion. I‘m all for Eva being herself, pink frilly kimono and all.

1. Rosario Dawson

She might be the perfect woman, with a killer combination of brains, bod, beauty and balls. Not only do I appreciate how perfect looking she is, more than anything she appeals to my inner geek. She’s sexy and frisky but she’s not afraid to get down and dirty in films like The Devil’s Rejects, Grindhouse and Sin City. At the same time, she can hold her own in lighter fare like Clerks II (which she was persuaded to do with the inclusion of the infamous donkey show scene).

Also, the woman has created her own comic book. How badass is that?
