So, last night was crazy, right? Here I am, sitting on my couch enjoying a bag of Pop Chips (yes, an entire bag. So much for portion control) watching NeNe Leakes flip her sh*t on Celebrity Apprentice when suddenly the news breaks in.

Osama Bin Laden has been killed, they tell me. Obama is going to address the nation shortly, I’m informed. Twitter was on fire. My Facebook Newsfeed was blowing up with pro-American reactions and “America, F**K Yeah!” lyrics. The text messages were pouring in.

And so it went from a typical Sunday night to the kind of moment we will all remember forever. Much like the tragedy of 9/11, the minute details of the moment I found out that Osama Bin Laden had finally been found and killed will forever be etched into my brain. I’ll always remember where I was and what I was doing when the news broke (as pathetic as I was at that moment).

In honor of Women’s History Month, CollegeCandy has decided to spotlight some of the world’s most influential women. Last week we focused on the women from our generation and this week, we pay attention to some of the most spectacular thirty-somethings. These are the women that show us life really does get interesting in your 30s, whether you’re a famous movie star or activist. Anything can happen, and just like these women have done in their 30s, we can make a difference in the world at any age.

Political ads around election time are famous for their often-nasty messages, intending to take down the opposition. Interest groups act as a sidekick, informally backing certain candidates by criticizing their opponent. With all the smack-talk, it can be really difficult to decipher fact from fiction.

Amid this chaotic media mess, there are several sources that are not only reliable but also non-partisan. They provide voters with the facts, avoiding the echoes of emotion and party allegiance.

Here are a few must-read sites for any college student planning to vote this election– hopefully, that’s all of you!

Project Vote Smart
Votesmart.org provides candidates’ voting records, their political stance on all issues, and their approval ratings by interest groups. Seriously, there is no better site to inform you about your state’s candidates, leaving out the mess of opinion and sticking to the cold hard facts.

FactCheck.org
This site sifts through the truths and lies of campaign ads. It allows readers to be informed of false advertising and not fall for the tricks of media campaigning.

CNN.com
In case it wasn’t obvious in my previous posts, I rely on CNN for much of my political knowledge. After checking out the aforementioned sites, head to the following interactive links on CNN.com and delve deeper into the midterm elections.

The Races
This interactive map to all the midterm elections (Senate, House, Governor) allows you to find out who is running in your state. Also, the site provides visual representations of party control in the House and Senate. There are also lists of the races to watch, accompanied by a blurb about the two candidates that are competing for the seat.

The Polls
This area of CNN’s “Election Center” has a myriad of political news articles about the majority of the races, relaying where Americans stand in certain races and why they’re voting in such a way.

My Election
After being prompted to type in your area code, you will find a wealth of news, polls, and opinion pieces about the candidates from your state. Also, you can find out what’s at stake this election, voting information, and fund raising numbers per candidate.

Voting by party, rather than issue, is dangerous. As I’ve mentioned before, it’s essential to understand who you’re voting for and where they genuinely stand on the important issues. Before heading to the polls on November 2, make sure you check out these helpful sites and know who you’re voting into power.

After countless summers as an essentially aquatic creature in my childhood, I know my way around a pool.  You can always tell which kid has the potential to use your watery paradise as their personal toilet.  And by “which kid,” I mean all kids.  Hell, I’ll admit, I’ve raised the temperature in a pool or two (I was young, okay??).  What I didn’t do was go swimming with diarrhea (grossgrossgrossgross), or drink the pool water (hey, I was peeing in it, why would I drink it??), or do any of the other things that health officials warn against.

In my day, peeing in the pool got you a shrill “ewwwww” from the rest of your playmates, but then you moved on and kept playing Marco Polo or whatevs until the next one of you decided that drying off, running to the bathroom and then trying to pull that wet one-piece back up was far too much work.  Gross? Yes, but apparently not gross enough to keep people from doin’ the in-the-pool-pee-pee.

So, we want do know: do you pee in the pool? Don’t worry, we won’t tell anyone.

Beware, your mother is on now Facebook. You don’t believe me? Well, CNN has the proof. They are reporting that women over 55 are the fastest growing group on Facebook. That’s right, your mother is sending you a friend request at this very moment.

Maybe you’re part of that lucky minority who hasn’t received that email yet, the email that will crush your boundaries and make you curse the social network’s very existence. That may be true, but your mom may still be just a click away from invading your personal Facebook space.  Studies show that “there are now about 1.5 million female users older than 55 on the site — roughly a 550 percent increase over six months ago.”

Unfortunately, my mother is among this statistic.

We became Facebook “friends” about a month ago and let me tell you, my world has never been the same since. At first, I thought our new virtual relationship could be fun. Maybe it would free up some of my cell phone minutes, make her feel more included and “hip.” Maybe I could leave her fun messages on her wall and tag her in embarrassing photos. Well… it’s not so fun. Not so fun at all.

If your mom has yet to find you on Facebook, here’s what you have to look forward to:

Write on your wall and sign it, “Love, Mom.”
Get confused and ask for your help. Again and again.
Sign up for applications and send you drinks and presents and puppies.
Question who people are, what they said and what it means.
Comment on inappropriate pictures, most likely by criticizing you.
Start conversations with “I was on Facebook and …”
Know what you’re doing and when you’re doing it.
Friend your friends.

Beware, Facebook is not mom-friendly. You will get frustrated, irritated, and embarrassed, so talk her out of it while you still can. If it’s too late for you, her new-found obsession should only last a few weeks. Laugh it off an start sharing war stories. Remember, we’re all in this together.
