One spring staple you might already have in your closet is the trench coat. It’s an essential in a woman’s wardrobe (and one of the 5 spring trends we HAVE to have), and if you buy the right one it will last you for a lifetime. Why does every single woman on earth absolutely need a trench?

For one reason and one reason only: a trench coat will not only get through those gross, rainy days we encounter in the spring, but it will get you through them looking chic, cute and put together.

Done and done.

This year there is an insane variety of trench coats available in every length, color, style and pattern, meaning you’ll have no problem finding one that fits into your personal wardrobe. Or one to covet for the rest of your life, like the Burberry one I included (because you can’t talk trenches without mentioning Burberry), which I would need to start a fund for now to be able to afford it by the time I’m 50. But the thing is, you really don’t need to spend $1,000 on a trench coat to get something classic and quality. In fact, I’m willing to bet most people wouldn’t even be able to pick the Burberry one out of the lineup below. [Editor's Note: I couldn't!]

The wonderful fact is, whether you can spend $30 or $3,000, there’s a trench coat out there with your name on it… and you should get out there and snatch it before the spring showers set in and leave you soggy and frizzy.

Reese Witherspoon has been flying under the radar for awhile. I hate to think her time has passed, but lately, I haven’t been super compelled to see any of her projects (and apparently I’m not alone, if the performance of her latest flick “How Do You Know” is any indication…) It’s a bummer, but there will always be a place in my heart for the woman who so brilliantly brought Elle Woods to life.

And apparently the paparazzi is equally as enamored of her, because lately (read: since her engagement), we’ve been inundated with tons of Reese photos: “Reese walks with her fiance!” “Reese goes shopping!” “Reese drinks a latte…while Jake Gyllenhaal cries himself to sleep!”

It was only recently that I’ve started to notice her great sense of style. Reese has a grounded, comfortable, girl-next-door aesthetic. While not flashy, it’s totally relatable and always looks very effortlessly put together. And it can be done at a fraction of the cost.

This outfit looks so toasty, without being bulky or awkward-looking. This gray and black faux fur coat is both functional and cute (and, hello, CHEAP), and this super adorable (and thick!) ruffled scarf adds a feminine flair. Adding a grey tunic and some black leggings is a casually chic look, and add some sexiness with some basic knee-high boots. A to-die-for pink clutch adds some much-needed color to any otherwise neutral outfit.

This is the perfect winter day look – it’s simple, warm, and not at all schlubby, and when it’s -9183 outside, it’s pretty unreasonable to expect a ton more.

Neutral blazer: worth the splurge

It’s really easy to get swept away by trends and brand names when you’re shopping. The stuff is just so pretty! Not pretty, though, is a closet full of overpriced clothes that are torn, tattered or out of style six months later. Before you hit the mall and load up on all that Spring cuteness, take a moment to assess the difference between an investment and an indulgence.

Which is which?

Let’s break it all down.

Worth it: Black pencil skirt
Not Worth it: Sequin mini-skirt
Why: While sequins are a hot trend this season, they are just that – a trend – and who knows if they will still be popular next season? On the other hand, a black pencil skirt is a classic; it works for multiple occasions, will last you for years, and will never go out of style.

Worth it: Good pair of comfortable pumps
Not Worth it: Flats
Why: No matter what flats cost, they are still very…flat. That means they wear out easily, so it doesn’t pay to fork over $100 for a pair; they’re still going to be beat up by the end of the year.

Worth it: A versatile purse
Not Worth it: A clutch that you take to the bar
Why: Fact – The more you drink, the higher your chances of losing things. If you splurge on a clutch and you lose it, it will be heartbreaking, not to mention a HUGE waste of money. On the other hand, a versatile purse that you can use as a school bag, for everyday use or for job interviews is well worth the investment.

Worth it: A bra in the right size
Not Worth it: Underwear
Why: Though not often considered, your bra is one of the most important things you put on everyday. A quality bra (that fits right!) not only keeps your girls in place, but it makes your clothing fit and look better. Underwear, on the other hand, is all the same. It doesn’t matter if you spend $10 for a thong at VS or $2 for a thong at Target, it all looks the same under those pants… and it’s all going to wear down quickly in those dorm dryers.

Worth it: Pair of well-fitting jeans
Not Worth it: Leggings
Why: Why anyone would spend more than $20 on a pair of leggings I’ll never understand. Especially when there are so many cheap options out there! They are leggings! They will wear out quickly no matter where you buy them. If you want to make a sound investment, save up some cash and buy a quality pair of jeans. They will last you forever (even if you wear them every day!) and, unlike leggings, there is a distinct difference between the look, feel and fit, of premium denim and the cheap stuff.

Worth it: An LBD or LGD (little grey dress!)
Not Worth it: A trendy mini dress
Why: A classic LBD or LGD is versatile – its appearance can be changed with different shoes or accessories. It also happens to be completely timeless. A trendy mini, however, is likely a one-look outfit that you’ll wear once or twice before retiring to the back of your closet with those other overpriced trendy pieces you wasted money on.

Worth it: A classic, neutral blazer
Not Worth it: A sequined blazer
Why: Same as the pencil skirt/sequin mini, you don’t want to spend the big bucks on something that is clearly a trend. Put that money towards a neutral blazer that works for everything: over jeans for the day, over a mini for the bar, or over a pencil skirt for an interview.

Worth it: A black cardigan
Not Worth it: A C&C California cotton cardigan
Why: If there is one thing I can say it’s this: stop spending money on low quality products just because they have a fancy brand name. $80 for a cotton cardigan that will be torn up and pilling in three months is not worth it. Even if they sell it at Bloomingdales.

Worth it: A warm winter coat
Not Worth it: A cute raincoat
Why: Clearly you need to stay warm in the winter.  A versatile, neutral colored winter coat won’t go out of style, and if you buy a good quality one, it also will last you for years.  A cute raincoat is something you’re likely to get sick of after a season or two, so if you save your money on it you don’t have to love it forever.

Worth it: Dress pants for interviews
Not Worth it: Sweats for lounging around
Why: This one is pretty obvious. Dress pants for interviews should drape well, and be hemmed to wear with your nice, interview appropriate shoes.  If you’re just wearing your sweats around the house (and you should just wear them around the house) it doesn’t really matter what they look like or what brand name is plastered across the butt.

Alright, ladies…Black Friday is right around the corner. Are you ready?

They call it Black Friday for a reason…it’s not pretty. It’s a jungle. It’s women (and some men) at combat. It’s war. Savings like these are not to be taken lightly.

Sure, we could give you tips on how to survive the shopping nightmare like, map out a game plan, shop online, or just don’t go. But let’s be real, if you really want to survive Black Friday…you got to B-E A-G-G-R-E-S-S-I-V-E: be aggressive! BE BE AGGRESSIVE!

Here’s how…

1) Cancel your appointment for your weekly mani. You are gonna need to use those nails to properly scratch the B*&^%$ who’s tryin to take the world’s most adorable coat at Banana Republic…and it’s 40% off. It’s yours!

2) My mom always said to look my best wherever I go in case I meet Mr. Right, cuz he could be anywhere (which I’m beginning to think is a total myth…but that’s neither here nor there). But for today, scratch the heels and strap on those Nikes. You are gonna need as much traction and comfort as you can get if you’re going to get those adorable Old Navy Cashmere sweaters in every color.

3) Trying clothes on is just annoying in general but waiting for a dressing room on Black Friday is absolutely unbearable. No time to wait in line…think of all the things you could be snagging! Like those adorable Vera Wang ankle boots you saw at Kohl’s that are now 50-60% off. Solution: layer your clothes. For example, wear a thin spaghetti strap under your shirt so you can try on any shirt without having to do the whole gross dressing room/flash the store thing.

4) Forget you’re a lady…push, shove, punch, kick! Whatever it takes! Your little sister is dying for that Bratz Magic Makeup Doll; who cares if they freak you out? They’re $9.99 at Toys-R-Us!! You’ll be damned if that soccer mom is gonna snag them all!

5) On that note, you might want to brush up on your self-defense tactics. B*&#$es be crazy and you need to be prepared. Make sure to really work on that upper cut. Promise it will come in handy when you are battling it out with some skank who wants the same pair of Ralph Lauren flats that will match your Christmas dress PERFECT! Um, hi, they’re 20% off and going home with you.

That overly priced piece of fleece has been cramping styles of college chicks nationwide for way too long. Not only is it boring and blah (and yes getting it in bumble-bee yellow still makes it blah) – but its making you that girl. You know who I’m talking about: The one who walks around campus in her big sunglasses, tight stretch pants, boots and… NORTH FACE FLEECE.

I’m not saying it’s horrible to be one of those girls – in fact I think these girls get a bad rap for being bitchy and spoiled when that isn’t the case (note: I was one of them). What I am saying is that if you’re going to spend the money on a piece of outerwear there are so many, MANY cuter, warmer, more original, not fleecy things to buy!

Trust me, I understand the “I’m hungover and want to wear sweats to class” line of thinking, I really do. But at least fool the outside world that you care…even a little… and switch up your NFF for an actual jacket or coat. This fall there are just so many cute styles that it’s simply a waste to not wear one of them!

You can wear this to class or to the bars. Pair it with jeans, leggings, even sweats and it instantly screams “I’m super hot,” and, “Don’t mess with me, yo.”

This Yellow is a must-have color, and it adds color to even the palest, most hungover faces, convincing any professor that you are 100% mentally there.

The Best Bar Jacket

For $29.80 it’s A-OKAY if you lose it, spill on it, get sick on it, forget about it, etc.

When it comes to bar jackets you have to plan ahead; while you won’t want to freeze and NOT wear a coat (a mistake made by freshies nationwide), you also don’t want to wear your favorite Theory jacket only to have it be traded up by some other gal who wore her Forever 21 jacket, saw yours shoved in a corner and grabbed it at the end of the night “by mistake.”

But the rest of us, the small lowly peons who lust after the goods and then stockpile cheaper offers, are still attempting the seasonal transition from summer to fall.

I have been staring at the fall trends since the last Fashion Week held in the spring, and now I am finally beginning to see the stores stock some of the trends I have been itching to purchase.

And this fall season, the fashions are jacket heavy.

Not coats—not outerwear that is heavy and daunting (for some reason the puff jacket is back..eww), but lightweight jackets that are fun, funky and now complete a once summer turned fall outfit you felt was totally lacking.

This fall, jackets and blazers have taken on every shape and size from schoolboy blazer to nipped in leather to a full and swingy capes and ponchos. This fall, it is not the pattern on the fabric but the fabric itself that has shown precedence.

Velvet, thin buttery leather, and the perfect shade of blue denim: this is what is important. It’s about the cut, the color and the fabric. The jackets of the season are about what looks good on you, what fits your fancy.

These are not showy pieces that are going to go out of style, this is outerwear you will keep—and wear—for years to come.

It truly is a season where the separates are not making the ensemble, but rather the jacket that is pulling it all together.
