Well get ready to give her a heart attack, because at schools like Brandeis, students get to vote on whether they want their hall bathrooms to be single-sex or coed. We’re all for spending as much time with boys as possible, but there are some times (read: when you’re pooping) that you just don’t want the bros around.

So I gotta know:

Would you rather have single-sex bathrooms or coed bathrooms?

Creepy Adult Excitement Over High School Musical 3.

All the reviews are positive. Everyone’s raving over it. And grown ass women are holding in depth discussions about Zac Efron’s facial hair (or lack thereof). I understand that the kids who fell in love with HSM 3 years ago have gotten older and that the movie is “growing up” to cater to them, but that’s the point: Disney made it for seniors in high school—not the hosts of the Daily 10, not for my mom (who has already purchased tickets in advance) and not for me (although I do love me some Corbin Bleu).

The bottom line is that this movie is about high school, so high schooler’s should be the ones counting the days until its release. When Disney can find a way to wholesomely portray coed life while incorporating schnazzy dance numbers with synchronized keg stands, I’ll be the first one at the box office.

Yet Another Reason to Hate Flying.

As if there weren’t enough things to worry about when hurtling through the air in a giant chunk of metal with no easy access to (or knowledge of how to operate) a parachute, I now need to prepare for incidents that could occur pre-takeoff. In Chicago, a plane collided with a pickup truck on the runway. I think it’s safe to say that the truck driver is slightly more responsible in this situation. I mean, A) how did you miss the enormous freaking AIRPLANE blocking your path, and b) WHY were you in a pickup truck on the tarmac? This just makes no sense to me, but as bad as a backseat driver (and passenger) as I was before, you better believe I’ll be second guessing a smooth takeoff the next time I board a plane.

The economy f*cking every. single. industry.

So far I’ve come through this recession/crisis/Armageddon unscathed. Luckily, I really haven’t been hurting in any obvious ways (not that I had much money to lose, or many expenses that would take a toll on my poor college lifestyle). But I finally am starting to worry: TV has been affected. I mean, the industry is pretty resilient; they even survived running shows without anyone to write them, but the news has been announced that NBC is trimming the fat--$5 million worth of fat. Jeff Zucker, CEO, is looking for ways to cut staff and other expenses. All I know is that I need me some quality NBC sitcom to lift me out of my monetary funk…and if anything happens to The Office all hell will break loose.

John Mccain’s Apparent State of Delusion.

So, despite the fact that Obama is OWNING Mccain in the race for the white house thus far, Johnnie still thinks that “things are headed [his] way.” Really? What things might you be speaking of? A landslide loss in an historical election? A sad realization that you were simply a filler candidate for the Republican party? A HUGE increase in your taxes once your opponent is elected? Because, yeah, I can see those things headed in your direction. Maybe that SNL skit revolving around your imaginary BFF, Joe the Plumber, is spot on regarding your mental stability…

Haters.

No one likes a hata. Especially when said hata is hatin’ on someone for a ridic reason….which is most of the time. Specifically this week, though, those hatin’ on women for their body type or size is particularly whack. When the tabs aren’t blowing up bikini pics of pregnant women to circle their cellulite, they’re hurling accusations of eating disorders at stars they deem too thin. Seriously? It’s kind of common decency not to criticize real women who are “too fat,” but at what point did it become okay to label anyone under 115 lbs as anorexic? Celebs are living, breathing human beings. Yes, it is part of their job to stay in good shape (and they get paid enough to afford those pricey trainers and nutritionists), but it’s social responsibility to discontinue the degrading and emotionally scarring descriptions that are printed about famous women. Set a positive example for the way that real women are portrayed and talked about.

Whew! Venting makes me feel much better. Now it’s your turn… 

This table time can often result in blackmail-worthy anecdotes about your Mom’s coed days from Uncle Bill. Unfortunately, it can also result in HORRIBLE AWKWARDNESS should you overshare and let slip any of the following (I know, I thought they’d be cool with it too):

1) That time you got so drunk at the club that you passed out in the bathroom.

Also not good to share: the fact that your equally wasted friends did not notice your sudden absence, and were alerted to your condition only when the cleaning staff found you at 6 am. This story, while earning you street cred amongst your fellow college lushes (I think it’s hilarious, obv), will not go over well with Mom for various reasons. 1) Contrary to her own experiences in college, she would like to believe that you–her responsible and intelligent daughter– would never participate in such tomfoolery. 2) She ain’t sending you to school to get drunk.

Best to skip this little tale and save it for a more appropriate time: boasting during “This one time, I was so drunk…” circles.

2) The time your random roommate had their (um, and your) apartment raided by the DEA.

A stretch, I know, but I’ve heard stranger. Basically any drug-related incident that you were (unfairly) implicated in, and later had your good name cleared from does not need to be shared with Mom & Dad. You obviously handled the situation, and your parents do not need the added stress of constantly fearing for your safety from drug dealers. Plus, I mean, what are the odds of that happening twice? But, you know– if it does–then you should probably tell them. And, also, avoid rooming blind.

3) Any minute details of your sex life.

In fact, pretend you don’t have a sex life. Do they know you’re probably not sitting in your room knitting on Friday nights? Yes. Do they want to be informed that you are, quite commonly, grinding with a hot guy or making out with said stud? Um, no. All they need to know is that you’re responsible about your activities, you have a clean bill of health, and they have no impending grandchildren. Unless your mom is a wacky, new age sex therapist, a high school health teacher, or Lorelai Gilmore, just…you know, skip it.

4) That you didn’t earn those fab grades with perfect attendance.

If you are one of those chosen few who attends class for first day attendance, paper due dates and the final exam in exclusivity yet still pulls an A – good for you (I hate you!). JK, you’re not that bad, just lucky. Anyhoo, though, your parents don’t want to know that you are the one hit wonder of attendance, and that you spent most lectures doing more productive things with your time. They’re happy with the end result (your kick ass GPA), but by no means do they need to be enlightened that your tuition covers an average 5 days of class. Keep up the good(?) work, but keep your lips sealed.

5) AN.Y.THING. that happened on Spring Break.

What to tell them: Where you’re going, where you’re staying, emergency contact numbers, and when you’ll be home. That’s it. For me, this is a given as I pay for my own spring break adventures and my mom simply pretends the week itself does not exist. But seriously, even if your parents “really do want to know how your spring break was, just curious!” DO.NOT. TELL THEM. Describe the beautiful landscape, the quaint shopping, the exorbitant cost of “bottled water”. Just don’t tell them what you did, who you did, or where you did it. Capiche? What happens on Spring Break…will get dragged up during future references to your faults should you ever tell your parents what really went down.

A few days ago, we had a phone meeting. We had our pens and paper out, ready to take detailed notes, but the phone meeting got kind of boring, and no one really wrote anything down. Except this:

Safe to say, we know how to keep it real in the office.

But give me my own bathroom.

Co-ed bathrooms are one of college’s biggest mysteries. Who thought it would be a good idea? Who decided that it would be totally cool to completely devoid college kids of any type of privacy? Did none of the inventors of co-ed bathrooms ever have a crush?

And if they did, how could they fathom perhaps bumping into that crash while they still had pimple stuff on their face and crow’s nest on top of their head?

I just don’t understand it. The bathroom is sacred. Private. It’s not a place I want to discuss homework or chat about the newest TV show.

I don’t want to step out of the shower and come face to face with the captain of the lacrosse team. I don’t need that sort of horrible awkwardness in my life.

Also, in case no one’s noticed, guys and girls take very different approaches bathroom etiquette. Guys often think nothing of taking the entire sports section into the stall with them and staying in there for hours, while girls prefer to get in and get out without anyone really seeing.

Dealing with a dining hall “situation” (that bean burrito went through you a lot faster than expected) in a public restroom is bad enough, but passing a guy going into a stall at the same time as you? Incredibly, painfully embarrassing.

Has anything good ever happened in a coed bathroom? Has a romance ever blossomed by the hair-clogged showers or toothpaste encrusted sinks? Have the genders ever come together in perfect harmony underneath the harsh florescent lighting? I don’t think so.

After years of strict separation in high school, many freshmen probably look upon co-ed bathrooms as a titillating experience during their first weeks, but as time goes on, they learn the tired lesson that bathrooms aren’t for sharing.

I could not imagine going to a college campus where the only students enrolled were female. To me, that seems to take away so much of the fun of college.

The New York Times reports that enrollment for women-only colleges has decreased drastically, and this has resulted in schools such as Marymount College in Tarrytown, NY shutting its doors forever. Somehow, this does not surprise me.

“Marymount struggled to retain students and attract new ones. For example, in 2004, 45 percent of Marymount’s freshmen did not return to the college for their sophomore year. In 2005, Marymount had only about 800 students enrolled and Fordham announced the college would close its doors in 2007 — on its 100th anniversary.”

Although the idea of a women only college is empowering and I’m sure has a lot of significance for those who went there, it seems that not many incoming students have the desire to go to such places.

“In recent years, small women’s colleges nationwide have seen enrollment plunge as women increasingly opted for coed institutions.” NYT

The original mission of these colleges was for women to have the option to go to college and become leaders, when so many were denied entry from higher education 100 years ago, which is amazing.

But, the times, they are a’changin, and co-ed is now the way to go.
