[I used to think I knew everything…until I found myself stranded in the middle of adulthood with no map and no one to guide me when I got lost. I have learned a lot since then - from how to balance a checkbook to how to sew on a button - and will share my wisdom with you.
Every Monday I will be back to teach you how to do something useful, even if it also happens to be completely random. Because, hey, you never know when you just might need to know how to change a tire…or mix a perfect martini.]
It’s that time of year again—a chill is in the air, you’ll freeze without your scarf, and a salad just isn’t going to cut it for dinner anymore. You need heartiness, and what better way to get it than from soup?
But hold the phone. I’m not talking about Chicken and Stars here. Ohhhh, no. I’m talking about real soup; soup that you make with fresh vegetables and your hands (although please refrain from putting your actual hands in the soup).

Ah, late fall. Midterms have passed, Halloween decorations festoon every front porch and retail store, piles of red and orange and yellow leaves line the streets, and there’s a lovely crispness to the air, which, before we know it, will turn to terrifying sub-zero wind chill factors and white-out blizzard conditions.
Woot. Woot.
But just because it’s time to put your miniskirt away doesn’t mean you have to start dressing yourself like Estelle Getty (god rest her sassy little Golden Girls soul). There are plenty of ways to bundle yourself against all forms of winter weather while still looking like a hottie.
Layering!
Lucky for all of us who live in the northern reaches of the U.S., layering continues to be all the rage in fashion. Stay warm while rushing between buildings to your next class by wearing multiple light weight pieces on top of each other. Por exemple, a tank top under a long sleeve tee under a cardigan will keep you cozy without making you look like the Michelin Man. Throw on a scarf (another fashion must these days) for even more insulation. On real nippy days, put on some long johns – believe me, those puppies work wonders and fit nicely under most clothing.
Get Russian About It
So I don’t know if you guys know, but Russia is pretty chilly; hence, those f**kers know how to bundle. For serious drops in temperature, think Soviet style: giant fur hats (fake, if you’re broke or a hater), full-length high-collared wool coats, knee-high riding boots. Not only will you be impervious to the cold, you’ll feel like a sexy spy from the 1950s. What more could you want out of life? Read More »

I don’t know about the weather where all of you are, but where I live, it’s still pretty freaking cold. While I would love nothing more than for spring to come, in the meantime I’m going to make the best of the ugly weather by having nice, hot meals!
Corn chowder is one of my favorite soup/stew hybrids, and I made a delicious two-person batch last week from a really simple recipe I modified. I guarantee it’s delicious, so give it a try!
Here’s what you need: about a tablespoon of butter, 1-2 slices of uncooked bacon, one small onion, one carrot, half a red bell pepper, about one cup of frozen (or canned, or fresh) corn, two cups of milk, chicken or vegetable broth (optional, and 1-2 cups if you use it), a bay leaf, one potato, a dash of salt, about ¼ teaspoon pepper, and about ¼ teaspoon thyme. Are you ready for fall weather?
Now that it’s getting colder, most of us have finally admitted to need to bundle up. But what to wear?
This year, celebrities are coming out in droves, sporting this season’s biggest trends: color, prints, and an all around put-together outfit.
It looks great, is easy to find in stores (thank God!), and still allows of our individuality to shine through.
The best part? It’s nothing us poor college students couldn’t afford! Celebs are keeping it simple and chic this fall…finally!
Check out some of Hollywood’s hottest and the totally awesome looks they’ve put together recently!
