"I love you, mom. Your gift will be a little late..."

Mother’s Day is fast approaching and I am old enough to understand I’ve used and abused doing the whole buy-her-a-card-and-make-her-’free backrub’-coupons bit. And as much as I would love to buy my mom concert tickets and backstage passes to Bon Jovi, my income is just not going to allow that kind of spending. Not to mention, I’ve been so busy drinking my face off for the last week of my college career busting out finals week, I had totally forgotten this Sunday was Mother’s Day until right about…now.

If, like me, you’re scrambling to finish all of those countless research papers and haven’t gotten to brainstorming about that perfect gift for mom, I’m here to help. No, these gifts won’t be ready quite in time for Sunday, but they are so awesome they are totes worth the wait. Just send mom a homemade card (or an e-card….it’s the thought, right?) and then wow her with one of these when you’re done with those dreadful exams.

1. Mom’s Mixtape
Most moms out there are a little challenged when it comes to technology, so this is the perfect (and cheap!) gift. I know my mother’s appreciation for ’80s rock is congruent with my obsession with techno dance parties on a Friday night, and it’s really simple to throw together a great mix CD with all of her favorite songs. It’s thoughtful, it’s easy, and it will make her really happy when she’s driving around town in that SUV running errands for you and the sibs. If you need inspiration, make a few radio stations on Pandora with her favorite artists to find some other artists she might love. It’s gift giving time and that means one thing: you’re finally gonna get that iPhone you’ve got a lot of wrapping to do. And if you’re anything like me, you’re way too cheap to spend money on holiday wrapping paper. Plus, is it really fair to our lovely planet to waste a tree on something that just gets thrown away? I don’t think so.

I realize some of you probably fold up your wrapping paper and reuse it, and more power to you. But for the rest of us, mostly those of us who tear through our presents without mercy, here’s a way to make your own unique, personal and beautiful wrapping paper without harming the planet or breaking the bank. We’ve all heard of Vision Boards. Whether it be from The Secret, The Oprah Show, or that crazy chick on The Bachelor who went on and on (and on) about hers the first night she met Jason. And then got kicked off. (But don’t let her bad luck turn you off; it wasn’t the vision board that sent her packing. That bitch was crazy.)

So, what are vision boards?
Vision Boards put your thoughts on paper, and force you to sit down and really evaluate what you want for yourself in the future – be it tomorrow or 2 years from now. And they stop you from going down a path you don’t really want. Not to mention looking at those images every day is a constant reminder of your dreams and goals and makes you that much more motivated to work towards making them a reality.

You can make them big or small. Mini vision boards are great for smaller goals. I have a mini vision board in my kitchen, which reminds me of my goal to stay healthy whenever I’m reaching for the pizza takeout menus. And I have one over my desk, filled with images and words that remind me of my long term academic goals so I don’t stray when I should be studying.

And then there are the biggies – a vision board for your life, filled with what you want to achieve in many aspects of your future: school, career, love, dreams….anything.

[I used to think I knew everything...until I found myself stranded in the middle of adulthood with no map and no one to guide me when I got lost. I think we can all agree that Hallmark cards are lame. If the card doesn’t contain something that you would actually say out loud on it (“For You, Mother, on Your 50th Birthday,” anyone?), it’s not worth spending your hard-earned cash on. Especially considering they cost like $5!

So what’s a gal to do when the holidays and special occasions roll around?

Duh! Make your OWN cards.

If you normally run screaming at the thought of anything crafty, take a deep breath and hang with me for a second. I also hate crafts, but I love to make greeting cards. They’re so much fun, and you can personalize them any way you want. AND they can be as simple or as involved as you like—no need to spend an hour laboring over intricate cutouts and frilly decorations if you don’t want to.

Here’s the other good news—they’re easy. All you need to make a basic card is some paper that you can fold and some markers (or crayons, pens, colored pencils, paints, or even chalk). Try making a painting on the outside of your card and writing a message on the inside. If that doesn’t strike your fancy, do a stencil or make a collage. A mosaic is another fun idea.
