My Dear, Dear CollegeCandy Readers,

I graduated college with a degree in Secondary Education. Yes, at some point (probably after 12 games of beer pong) I thought it would be a good idea to spend my life with high school brats. You can imagine why that didn’t pan out for me…. After doin’ the whole graduation thang (for which I was horribly hungover and still wearing my outfit from the night before), I did what any lost/confused/depressed 22-year-old girl would do: I packed up all my stuff and moved to New York City to pursue my dream of writing.

My parents didn’t support it and, unlike the rest of my friends, refused to support me. But I didn’t let that stop me. I knew I would forever regret it if I didn’t at least try. The whole thing was crazy; I was moving to the most expensive city on earth with no job, no plan and no money. But the fear of failing (and having to prove my parents right) fueled me, and a mere 2 months later, I’d landed a job.

And not just any job. An amazing job.
I was hired right here at CollegeCandy.

For the past three years I’ve spent my days working with the most phenomenal college writers, producing the most phenomenal college content. My job requires me to read gossip blogs, to watch horrible reality TV and to share graphic details of my cursed dating life. It’s insane that someone has been paying me to have so much fun, especially when the rest of my friends work tirelessly for ungrateful bosses doing mind-numbing work.

But now it’s time for me to move on; to take the skills I’ve acquired and try something totally new and different. To put my passions into a new company in a new position. And so today is my last day as the Editor in Chief of CollegeCandy.

I am incredibly grateful for the time I’ve spent here (despite the many commenters calling me a whore, a slut, an insensitive a-hole, and a whole lot of other things I’d rather not list), not only because every day was an exciting new adventure, but for the many life-altering lessons I’ve learned. So taking a cue from Oprah, I’m going to use my last post to impart some great wisdom on you all. Below, the 4 biggest lessons I’ve learned at CollegeCandy:

1. Guys don’t like dating girls who share their dating stories online. At least that’s the explanation I give to my parents when they ask me, yet again, why I’m not dating anyone. But there’s definitely some truth to it. If I had a dollar for every guy who’s ever asked me if I’m going to “write about this” when the date is over, well, I wouldn’t need to go on dates with loser guys just for a free meal.

2. People will hate you, no matter what. There is not a day that goes by here in CC HQ when we don’t wonder what the eff our readers are thinking. We write about casual sex, people hate us. We write about monogamous sex, people hate us. They tell us we need to be more serious, then they get mad at us for trying too hard to be serious. Hell, we even pissed people off talking about BIKINI WAXES. But the truth is – and this goes for life, too! – the angry people always speak louder. For every person who tells us we’re going to “burn in hell,” there are others who are chuckling at their computer screens or nodding their heads in agreement. And for every person who finds me loud and obnoxious, there are plenty who find me charming, loyal and effing hilarious. I choose to think about those people. F**k everyone else.

3. Passion is the key to happiness. Look, I’m a blogger and blogging is one of those industries that pays, well, sh*t. While my Investment Banking friends and lawyer friends take exotic vacations and go on massive Bloomingdale’s shopping sprees, I go spray tanning (only when it’s $10 on Sundays) and buy the bulk of my clothes at Target. It’s hard sometimes and downright stressful at others (like when my bills come in), but I’ve learned that I wouldn’t want it any other way. Because those lawyers and bankers hate waking up every day. They hate having to work until 10pm at night. They have to take vacations so they can get away from whatever crappy ass work keeps piling up on their crappy ass desks. And me? I LOVE what I do. I look forward to it. I think about it all the time and miss it when I’m away. Can I buy the Marc Jacobs bag I’ve been drooling over for 3 years? No, but I’d rather tote my 6-year-old Longchamp to my awesome job than do the Trail of Tears to an office I hate every day. For the rest of my life.

4. Going to work hungover is the worst thing on earth. Yeah, it took me a few tries (and barfing in a trash can under my desk) to learn this one, but now I know. And if I am ever tempted by $1 beers at my neighborhood bar, I’ve got the garbage can under my desk as a constant reminder.

So yeah. That’s that. I wish you all the best of luck in everything you do. Take some risks. Try something new. Don’t give up on your goals before you have a chance to try to achieve them. Keep reading CollegeCandy. And don’t drink the Jungle Juice.

Much Love,
Lauren

After months and months of planning, tasting and tasting some more, we at CollegeCandy HQ are so excited to present to you: CollegeCandy Candy. It’s been our dream since the beginning of this here website to create a treat that tastes like college. Because what says college better than something sticky, sweet and bad for you?

And we’ve finally done it! And no one got hurt! (Well, except that time Jenni got a lollipop stuck in her hair. That’s what she gets for trying to use it as a tequila chaser….) And now it’s time for you to sample (and love) our tasty creations!

These lollipops, made in the good ole’ U.S.A., are available in 7 awesome flavors:

Spring Break – Tequila and coconut. Yum.
Red Bull Vodka – All the flavor, no hangover.
Finals Week – Chocolate, coffee, and a hint of energy drink sweetness. It’s better than it sounds!
One Night Stand – Whiskey and cigarettes. You won’t regret this one in the morning.
Morning After – Beer and coffee. Sounds like a strange combo, but it’s so much better than the real thing.
Jungle Juice – And this one doesn’t come out of a garbage can. Promise.
Boxed Wine Every Day – Tastes like sangria. Slap the lollipop!

Seriously, these things are YUMMY, and being someone who has been out of college for a few years, one lick totally takes me back to those lazy Saturdays in my sorority house.

We’re so excited to share these with you that we’re offering everyone a sampler pack, FREE. Yes, you get two of every flavor to try for yourself. FOR FREE. We’re not even gonna charge you shipping. Yeah, we’re cool like that.

How do you get your free pack? Simple! Just click here to fill out the form and we’ll ship ‘em out to you ASAP.

Happy (college) snacking!

XOXO,

WELCOME TO OUR BIRTHDAY PARTY!

We’re officially four years old and we couldn’t be happier. Over the past four years we’ve gone from a teeny-tiny little blog struggling to get visitors to becoming the LARGEST blog out there for college women. (Sorta like how Suri went from pacifiers to high heels….) Not to sound cocky, but GO US! Okay we’re done patting ourselves on our backs. Intern, stop rubbing my feet and start patting me on the back, will ya?

Where was I? Oh, right. Our birthday party. Anyways, we couldn’t have gotten where we are today without ALL OF YOU! And that’s why we’re celebrating our big day by giving back to you.

Earlier this week we asked you to tell us (via Facebook) what your favorite CollegeCandy post is in the world — and you guys came out strong with a variety of awesome content (some we didn’t even remember!). So instead of sending you a slice of cake in the mail, we’re <del>gonna eat it ourselves </del>delivering a gift to you all day long.

Our top ten most-liked CollegeCandy blogs ever!

Just like a very special episode of a TV show, we’ll be running things a little differently today. Instead of putting up our usual Friday blogs, we’re going to be featuring the blogs that you picked! And, just like we promised, the person who submitted the most-liked post is going home with the most awesome goodie-stuffed Clava bag.

But that’s not all. We’re still giving out presents all day. Discount presents that is….check out all the awesome companies that want to save you some money in honor of our BDAY bash!

-Use “GOEDU” to get 25% off at Shoedazzle until March 15, 2011

We live in a social media obsessed world. There’s Facebook, Myspace, (although I wonder if anyone actually still uses it), Twitter, and many blogging platforms such as Tumblr, WordPress, and Blogger. Although we upload our pictures to Flickr and Facebook all the time or write about our weekend experiences in personal blogs, there could be a possible downside to all of this internet exposure: According to the Wall Street Journal, 85% of hiring managers Google a candidate before or after an interview. This fact, which is becoming more and more well-known, brings up the question: To blog or not to blog?

While I’m not saying that anyone who publicly posts pictures of themselves puking into a fraternity bathroom shouldn’t be a cause for concern, I am posing the question of boundaries and what and when a company should base their decision on hiring someone because of what comes up when they use Google. For example, take all the CollegeCandy contributors. Should our future bosses decline an interview with us, even though our resumes may be well qualified, simply because we once wrote an article that mentions sex or highlights the importance of birth control?

Personally, I think keeping a blog of any kind is a worthwhile venture. As a writer, I like to post things I’m interested in, things that drive me crazy, and of course, continuously write about things that matter to me (this includes everything from literary theory criticisms to the correct usage of the Real Housewives of New Jersey’s infamous phrase “prostitution whore”). However, I often worry that if I post liberal-sided articles or a picture of me enjoying a glass of wine that someone may use those things against me and blow them out of proportion one day. Despite more and more social media outlets being introduced to society on a regular basis, it seems like the idea of censorship or hiding oneself (at least the internet brand of oneself) is becoming a constant battle.

But get this – the Wall Street Journal also reports that “Recruiters and employers…routinely do online background searches on their candidates to learn more about them, as well as to filter out candidates with little or negative information about them.” So basically, it seems like our generation is damned if we do, damned if we don’t.

Imagine if you have nothing come up when your future employer Googles you. Instead of them rewarding you for that (something more and more colleges and media-outlets tell us to strive for), they pass on you because you aren’t relevant or important enough. But then, if you have an author’s page or Twitter account, something could be taken out of context or perceived as negative. What about people that disagree with this article? Could my future employer one day decline to hire me because some random commenter disagreed with me – putting me in a negative position?

It sounds crazy, I know, but it’s something that constantly comes up in the world of online writing and social media. While I understand why businesses want to search their job candidates, I think some kind of line in the sand needs to be drawn before too many well-deserving candidates are overlooked simply because they blog about Christian Louboutin’s, OPI nail polish, and Rachel Zoe instead of Wall Street, international trade, and compounding interest.

The issue of ‘to blog or not’ seems to constantly rely on personal judgment. However, personal judgment works both ways. For example, if someone is irresponsible enough to post a picture of themselves humping (see – because I used the word humping in this post, I may possibly never get a real job) a stop sign, they acted in poor judgment. Although they may personally have found it funny and did not make the picture private, their actions overwhelmingly were not in the best of judgment.

But think of it this way – what if your potential employer’s personal judgment doesn’t like your Tweet about his/her favorite restaurant, and decides that you come across as too opinionated because you simply wrote “Will not be eating at Restaurant A again.” Their personal judgment could cost you a good opportunity. The bottom line is that not everyone uses the best personal judgment from time to time (including those in hiring positions), and what one person finds offensive may not be a big deal to someone else. Should our generation have to walk on eggshells so we don’t piss anyone off with our opinions and views on the internet? Is this what it’s coming down to?

Blogger Emily Rose, a recent college graduate wrote a ballsy open post to a potential future employer on her Tumblr, after accidentally sending her blog link in her e-mail signature. Instead of cowering in fear over whether or not her employer would show no interest in her because of her personal interests explored on her blog (such as hung-over day after snap shots and mojito cupcakes), Emily wrote: “You’ll probably learn more about me from this blog than you did from my CV, which is fine. You’ve probably figured out some stuff already: like that I love animals and Africa and my family. But also, you know, sometimes I drink. And I spend a lot of time online….the result of those factors is now what’s on your monitor, and I don’t feel compelled to apologize for any of it.”

While some people may be completely appalled that she would be so open about herself like that, I think Emily is onto something. If we can’t be our true selves or represent things about ourselves in a personal manner, even in a public way such as the internet, then what does that say about society today? In conclusion of her post, Emily hits the nail on the head by writing, “I think I’m a good hire. I think I’m a good person, too. And I don’t think typing bad words or posting a picture of myself with friends at a bar blowing off some steam should affect my chances just because I’m a young person, and the lives of young people are more public and accessible than those of our parents.”

All in all, interviews, resumes, recommendations, and qualifications should remain as the most important factors in getting hired or rejected. But instead of using personal media against this generation, maybe it should be looked at a different way. With our generation riding the first wave of this Google exposure (or shall we call it overexposure?) phenomenon, it will be interesting to see what pans out. Ultimately though, I hope for the sake of our generation – we’re not looked at like this forever. Employers, writers, job applicants, and social media users of all kinds should embrace the more public and accessible use of information today, or at least set some boundaries for the years and technological advancements to come.

If you Google "Post-Grad," a lot of articles come up about suffering from depression once you graduate college. And yes, I will say that it can be depressing at times, but really -- it's not so bad. Although the last six months have gone by incredibly fast, I have learned a lot when it comes to adjusting to life outside of college.

If you Google “Post-Grad,” a lot of articles come up about suffering from depression once you graduate college. And yes, I will say that it can be depressing at times, but really — it’s not so bad. Although the last six months have gone by incredibly fast, I have learned a lot when it comes to adjusting to life outside of college.

So, here’s the ultimate post-grad survival kit (or at least what I’ve figured out over the last six months):

1. Stay Busy – Keep your ass moving at all times. Don’t hang out on the couch day after day, keep busy – whether it’s working a job, interning, or taking pottery classes. Do anything that will keep you busy. I’ve thrown myself into the LSAT, and trust me, it’s kept me occupied. Who knows how I’ll feel once my LSAT journey is over, but for now … it’s what I do to keep busy. Busy leaves little room to do #2.

2. Don’t reminisce too much – If you do nothing but think about college, you’re going to do nothing but miss college. Avoid this as much as you can. If something comes up in conversation, talk about it, but don’t sit in your room and look at pictures from your sophomore year every night. It’s okay to admit that college was one of the best times of your life, but it’s not okay to let that ‘best time of your life’ define the rest of your life. You should have the attitude that the best is yet to come and college was just a stepping stone. Or yeah, you’ll be depressed like all those articles say.

3. Do something you didn’t do in college – Find a new hobby or something you didn’t participate in throughout college. For example, I have never been a runner. And I wouldn’t call myself a runner even now. But since graduation, I have clocked in many miles on the boardwalk (this is a plus of living in CA) and on the treadmill as I possibly can. My college self wouldn’t have taken the time to just run. Doing something that you aren’t used to doing shows you that more things exist than what you thought about in college. It can be anything: take up painting, wine tastings, or knitting. Join a gym. Become a mentor. Anything you didn’t do in college.

4. Change it up – Your overall appearance probably didn’t change too much throughout college. Now that you’re a post-grad, you should definitely change something … even if it’s something small. Cut your hair. Paint your nails a color you would never wear in college (I was afraid of black nail polish in college, but now I love it). Change your style. While I don’t think you should abandon yourself from the last four years, a little update won’t hurt. It will make you feel better about yourself and it will signify this new, mature stage in your life.

5. Be serious – While you may have had an attitude that says “I don’t care” in college, it’s time to get serious about your future. You definitely don’t have to have anything figured out, but you should be serious about getting to whatever point you want in your life next. If you don’t know what you want to do (seriously, who truly knows what they want to do?), you should do everything to try to figure it out. Be serious about this. It may have been cool in high school and sometimes in college to be a slacker or to just not care , but you should be able to seriously talk about what you want.

6. Change Your Mind – In college, I had everything planned out and followed a strict routine when it came to everything – I never changed my mind. However, the most important thing post-grad has taught me is that changing your mind can be a gift. One day, you want to intern somewhere and the next day you don’t. It may not be on the path you wanted, but you figured out why and it’s a big eye-opener. The only way to figure things out is to make mistakes and to change your mind. It sounds like something out of a self-help book, but I seriously think this has been the most beneficial thing overall.

I know I’m not the only post-grad over here at CollegeCandy, so tell me … what are your ultimate survival tips for being a post-grad?

All of the CollegeCandy writers are strong, smart and…er…opinionated people. So we’re not surprised when some of our blogs turn into heated battlegrounds. But unlike some other sites, we don’t let this scare us. In fact, we take pride in our super-opinionated writers AND readers. After all, that’s the whole point of CollegeCandy — a place where every college girl gets her voice heard.

So to honor those voices and give you, our opinionated readers, a chance to raise yours once more, we’re bringing you the 15 most controversial CollegeCandy posts of all time. (Well, besides our most recent commentary on Demi Lovato. That wound’s still fresh.)

Break out the claws, ladies!

1. Trying To Understand The Curvy Girl Backlash
By CC Staff
Actually a response to a previous post’s backlash, this post tackled the body image debate that is getting everyone’s panties in a bunch. The point is raised that va-va-voom celebs like Salma Hayek and Beyonce do not belong in the same category as other women who are a little bigger, like Nikki Blonsky.

2. Taylor Swift Is Really, Super, Totally Overrated
By Lauren
Let’s face it, the girl’s voice is pretty forgettable. Sure, she’s adorable and wholesome, but why does there have to be a full-on riot every time someone utters a less-than-glowing word against T. Swift?

3. Should I Feel Guilty That I Can Afford An Unpaid Internship?
By: CC Staff
Unpaid internships are kind of the best (and only) way to get your foot in the door for so many careers these days, so why should any of us feel guilty if we have to ask our parents for financial help while we work hard to ensure a future career?

4. Young and Broke: I’m Paying For My Own Education
Sarabeth pays her hefty college tuition – it’s a struggle, but click to see why she’s grateful for this.

Most people think Lady Gaga can do no wrong. Some people <del>think wearing a filet mignon hat is definitely wrong</del> don’t. Call us crazy, but we think it’s okay to disagree with the masses.

5. Greek Speak: Why You Should (And Shouldn’t) Go Greek
Sororities aren’t for everyone, but some people get a lot out of them. Our Sorority Girl along with a panel of sorority women present both viewpoints.

Being single is great, but sometimes the single-girl diet isn’t so great for our waistlines…or self-esteem.

Just because a girl has a lot of sex, don’t call her a slut. Or, if you must, think about what you’re really saying first.

THIS CONTEST IS OVER. Tear.

As we speak (type? read?), freshmen across the country are moving into dorms for the very first time. Woooo! (Don’t forget your flip flops!) We wanted to help them out by providing some basic rules to dorm life (that won’t be covered in the first floor meeting). In order to reach as many freshmen possible, we not only posted this very blog, but we also sent our writers out on foot to flier dorms from coast to coast and help spread the word. That is, assuming they didn’t get caught and assaulted by an R.A. first….

So what are the 5 unofficial rules to dorm living?

We’ve got 4 right here and we’re looking at you (yeah, you!) to tell us #5. Why would you do that? Well, besides just being a generally nice person and doing something out of the goodness of your heart, how about doing it for $200 worth of textbooks at CampusBookRentals.com?

Yeah, we’re pretty nice, right?. So read (and adhere to) our 4 rules and then add your own. We’ll randomly select a winner September 10, 2010 and announce the results on Twitter and Facebook.

1. Make BFF with the R.A
Just because you’re hundreds of miles away from your parents doesn’t mean there are no rules (yeah…the movies kinda lied). Be nice to your R.A and she’ll be much more likely to look the other way when you roll a keg down the hallway wearing nothing but a sexy dinosaur costume. Ignore her and she’s likely to knock on your door at 3 A.M when you’re hooking up with a stranger claiming that there are “noise complaints” from your neighbor.

2. Give Poopers Privacy
It doesn’t matter how badly you need to shower or how much you want to check out your post walk-of-shame look under the unforgiving fluorescent lights. If you walk into the bathroom and smell/hear something coming from the corner stall, be polite, take your caddy, and leave. You’ll be thankful for this rule on the one day you take a risk and try the dining hall’s lamb tacos.

3. Prepare for Sexiling
There will come a time when you’re out playing flip-cup-turned-beer-pong-turned-binge-drinking when you’ll get a text from your roommate telling you to please, please find somewhere else to sleep that night. Prepare for this night in advance by making sure that you find a friend who doesn’t mind sharing her single bed and/or has a futon. Because there’s truly nothing worse than falling asleep to groaning, moaning, and “that feels so good…what’s your name again?”

4. Avoid Dormcest
Forget the fact that it’s convenient and forget the fact that it involves a limited walk of shame. The relationship will not last and you’ll be stuck awkwardly waiting for elevators together for the rest of the semester. Trust us. The last thing you want is to bump into him on the way to the shower and have to make an awkward “lol, we should shower together, jk, jk, so over you, not really, lol.”

5. Your Rule
We’re looking at you for rule #5. Submit your own rule and enter to win a $200 gift card from CampusBookRentals.com. (Yeah, that’s free money and free books. We got your back, girls.)

UPDATE: Congrats to our winner Alison who submitted this awesome rule: Another one I can think is to watch what your drinking. Before you take that next shot or do that next beer bong, ask yourself if it’s a good idea. If you think you’re already quite drunk, try to refrain from drinking more. Because if you don’t, then the people in your dorm hall including your roommates will be the ones stuck carrying your drunk ass home and cleaning your puke off of the floor. She’s won TWO HUNDRED DOLLARS from CampusBookRentals.com!

As college students, we are constantly inundated with new knowledge. It can be useful, thought-provoking, or crammed into our head on a Starbucks-fueled binge several hours before an exam. However, very rarely do we question the validity of all this new knowledge (unless you take philosophy classes, then you’ll question away).

That’s where College Candy comes in. We’re not going to debate whether or not the Theory of Relativity actually exists (a disappointment, I know, but I’m a communications major and stopped taking science classes after Baby Bio fresh year). However, we are here to thoroughly investigate the most widespread college knowledge (no, not rhyming)—the myth.

One of the most well known and deeply feared college myths are three little words: breaking the seal. As defined by the most elite source of definitions, Urban Dictionary, breaking the seal is “The point at which you first piss after you have been drinking your favorite alcoholic beverage and at this point you will be pissing every ten minutes.”

We’ve all been there. Enjoying a lively round (or 6) of flip cup when all of a sudden, your bladder reminds you that it has a maximum capacity. You try to discreetly excuse yourself to visit the ladies room, but your concerned besties remind you—very loudly—that you can’t break the seal!

So this seal we all desperately protect, does it actually exist? Or is it possible that it’s simply an alcohol-fueled figment of our imagination? I’ve enlisted a panel of urological experts (read: my boyfriend in med school and Google) to figure out if this phenomenon is real.

Apparently, the more jello shots, Natty Lite or vodka tonics you consume, the higher your Blood Alcohol Level (I know, who’d have thunk?) Anywho, all that warm and fuzzy ethanol flooding your system affects certain hormones that your brain produces, like the must “dance now” and “sexy-time” hormones, as well as a hormone called ADH (an anti-diuretic hormone), which helps your body retain water by controlling the amount of urine you make.

Alcohol inhibits ADH, so the more you drink, the more you’ll have to pee. Also, in case you never caught on, alcohol is usually a liquid, and the more liquid you intake, the more you will expel. Breaking the seal has nothing to do with the amount that you’re gonna pee afterward, nor how often nature will call. And if you don’t “break the seal” you will still feel a need to pee anyway, so it’s all sorta the same thing, right?

I know it’s heartbreaking to realize that there is no magical seal built by your first 5 beers, but on the bright side, you won’t feel a twinge of guilt if you decide not to risk a UTI by holding out.

So, the moral of the story is that if you gotta go, you gotta go! Don’t bother holding it, because the more you drink, the more urine your body will produce, and the more frequent your bathroom excursions will be. The best advice I can give you is to re-fill your cup before waiting in line for the bathroom. You won’t waste precious binge-drinking minutes and once you reach the bathroom you’ll kill two birds with one stone. Cheers!
