But sometimes they’re not people at all.

Every college girl knows that her best friends aren’t necessarily just the girls she heads out to lunch with. A girl’s got a lot on her plate and therefore must have a full on support system to help her get by. Thank god she’s got her 20 BFFs by her side.

Every college girl knows that her best friends aren’t necessarily just the girls she heads out to lunch with. A girl’s got a lot on her plate and therefore must have a full on support system to help her get by. Thank god she’s got her 20 BFFs by her side.

The only thing harder than a romantic breakup is breaking up with a friend.

How do you tell someone that is your ultimate best friend and gal pal that well, you’re just not that into her anymore?

Breaking things off with a BFF is definitely one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to do. Bottom line, this best friend just wasn’t really a friend anymore. She’d been flaking out on me, was way too caught up in trivial drama, and was never there when I truly needed her. She would only talk about herself and seemed completely uninterested in any details about my life. She seemed to be oblivious to her behavior and our deteriorating friendship, and I couldn’t remember the last time we’d had a genuine conversation.

Once I came to terms with the issues, I knew that our friendship was going to have to end. And then I noticed how eerily similar the end of a platonic relationship is to that of a romantic one.

The Fighting: We started to fight and bicker about the most insignificant details. Our opinions seemed to be on opposite sides of the spectrum, even though we used to finish each other’s sentences and always be on the same page.

The Little Things I Never Noticed Started to Piss. Me. Off: How did I not realize how petty and ignorant she was before? Did she always talk this much gossip about our friends? If she says the phrase,”I’ve never felt this way before!” about another guy, I will scream.

The Talk: I decided to sit down and have the talk with her. You know, about “us,” how it’s just not working and how I really felt. The talk went well, she promised she’d change and apologized for being a bia.

Phasing Her Out: After a few weeks with zero improvement since our talk, I tried the phase-out approach and just stopped hanging out and calling as much.

Let’s Meet for Coffee: The Phase Out Stage didn’t work as we still hung out with the same group of people and were always at the same places. She started to sense that I was distancing myself from her and so we had yet another talk over coffee. And another when nothing changed again. And another after that.

It’s Over: Finally, I told her that I didn’t think our friendship would work. Yes, I friend broke up with her. It’s not that I didn’t want to try and fix the friendship, because I really did, it was just past the point of fixing. I thought long and hard about what it would really mean to lose her as a friend, but I also thought about how happy and free I’d be if I didn’t have to stress about her anymore.

And now here I am. Sure, I spent some nights on the couch feeling lonely as I watched (crazy) girls compete to be Paris Hilton’s BFF, but I’m slowly moving on. Based on my break up calculations, I have a few more weeks of feeling sorry for myself, then I’ll hit the town, distract myself and move on to someone else.

We college girls love our morning-after recaps: reviewing the highs and lows (or extreme lows…like slipping on dirty bathroom puddles and falling to the ground) with our closest friends. We laugh, we look at pictures, we wipe last night’s mascara off our faces.

This morning, after a night filled with glamorous Oscar parties, I have to wonder if the celebs are doing the same. Is Kate Winslet sitting in bed flipping through all those selfies she took with her Oscar? Is Dev Patel sipping coffee with Frieda Pinto laughing about that awkward conversation she had with Sean Penn? Is Sophia Loren regretting all that Botox she injected in the limo ride over to the show?

And what do you think Hugh Jackman is up to? (Note: We imagine it doesn’t involve a shirt. Mmmm.)

The Oscars definitely lived up to (and exceeded) all expectations last night. The Judd Apatow short was hilarious, the musical numbers were entertaining (even if Beyonce didn’t really sing), and the surprises were endless. I mean, who knew Anne Hathaway could sing? We were thrilled for all of the winners…and even more thrilled that Angelina Jolie got knocked off her pedestal a bit by our BFF, Kate Winslet.

Don’t worry: It’s perfectly normal to experience all of these mixed emotions before you even make that trip to campus. But no fear! I’m here to give dish out tips not included in the orientation guide or one of those “Tips to Surviving College” books you got as a graduation gift.

1. Orientation: The friendship goldmine! Orientation is a great way to make friends since everyone there is going through that same, “I’m excited about college, but scared sh*tless” phase too. Plus you never know if you’ll meet your next boyfriend or dining hall buddies, so get out there and network, girl! But be warned, everyone you meet there WILL NOT become your new bff. Everyone’s nice at orientation, but everyone begins to show their true colors after a couple of weeks (or drinks) into the semester. This brings me to my next point…

2. Get to know the upperclassmen. They have tons of useful information, plus they tend to be a bit more mature than your freshie counterparts.

3. Make some “me” time. After all the study sessions, girlfriend outings and dates with bf, you’ll learn to appreciate being alone for a little while

4. Don’t try to be best friends with your roommate. You know how they say it’s bad to live with best friends because eventually you’ll hate each other? Exactly. Having a lot of mutual friends is also a bad idea because you won’t have anyone to vent to when she forgets to take the trash out. Again.

5. Learn your alcohol limit and stick to it. Because after awhile everyone will get tired of watching after the “drunken baby” every time there’s a beer pong tourney. And if you’re a novice/new drinker, stay away from Diesel, Everclear, Cuervo and Bacardi 151 for a while.

6. Don’t forget about your home friends. They’ll always be there to laugh at your “remember that time during homeroom…” stories when you really need a break.

7. Wearing sweats/ pajamas to class everyday is NOT a good look. Seriously.

8. Frat parties are good in moderation. It’s okay stumble upon a Frat house when you’re in need of free drinks and a couple laughs with (or at) the bros. Just don’t turn into that girl that’s always at the Gamma Pi house.

9 . Road trip when possible. It helps to alleviate stress and create some good stories for that next time you decide to head home for a good visit with old friends.

10. On-campus jobs= easy money. The pay/hours aren’t great, but it’s excellent source of gas/weekend money. Plus mom and dad will get tired of transferring funds to your account every week.

11. .Plan ahead for a “Walk of Shame”. The best time to for a post-nookie walk back to the dorm on the weekends is around 7 or 8 when everyone is still in bed.

And my most important point?

Don’t lose focus on what you came to college for…Education! So many people get caught up in aspects of college life that they forget about the quest for the almighty degree. So many people are not able to obtain a college education…take advantage of yours.

I’ll never forget my first Delia’s and Alloy catalog spotting.

My then BFF Shanae pulled them out during our 6th grade Social Studies class as our teacher rambled on about the meaning of Thanksgiving. I was immediately drawn to the glossy catalog of teens wearing bell bottoms and midriff baring tops that my friends and I were dying to get into.

Since that day I’ve a been faithful catalog subscriber to both and will probably remain one until I have kids and start to rethink my hatred against these.

As an avid Delia’s and Alloy shopper, I’m shocked by the large number of college girls that don’t buy from them. Where most of the college girls I know either shop at Bloomingdales or Plato’s Closet, Delia’s and Alloy serve as a happy medium. They both sell quality clothing and each host an awesome online clearance bin (I just bought a $100 dollar fire red peacoat from Delia’s for 40 bucks!).

With so many chic, sexy and comfy options, I don’t understand how college girls aren’t causing mayhem at their local Delia’s store, instead letting all the high schoolers get more bang for their buck. Here I’ve compiled some favorites of mine that are perfect for the college coed.

An article on Oprah.com, also posted on CNN.com, describes each kind. I have to say that I actually agree with most of the categories in the article. See what you think. Are there people in your life that would fall under each of these?

The Uplifter: “This woman’s favorite word: yes. You could tell her you’re trading your six-figure income for a career in offtrack betting, and she’d barely pause before yelping ‘Go for it!’ Don’t you need someone who looks past the love handles to notice the extraordinarily gorgeous you?”

Agreed. Every college age girl needs someone who is upbeat and positive in her life to help get through the less thrilling times like break ups, bad grades, and job decisions.

The Travel Buddy: “When the hotel in St. Lucia is a bust, one characteristic becomes all-important: flexibility. This agreeable companion need not be the girl you traded pinkie swears with on the playground; it’s enough that she’s comfortable with quiet (between gabfests) and is a teensy bit mischievous (as in tequila after midnight).”

Agree, sort of. Although it may not be a hotel in St. Lucia quite yet (maybe the crappy one in Acapulco on Spring Break), it’s great to have a friend who is down to do anything or go anywhere at a moment’s notice. You know, that trusty friend who will go for $1 drafts on a Monday night when you just really need to get out?

The Truth Teller: “Intent is what separates the constructive from the abusive. Once you’ve established that the hard news is spoken in love (not in jealousy or malice), you’d be smart to seek out this woman’s perspective.”

Agreed. Sometimes tough love sucks, but we need a friend in our life that is not scared to tell us what we need to hear, as long as she is doing it with her best intentions.

The Girl Who Just Wants to Have Fun: “One Saturday a pal and I — and yes, we’re both over age 12 — pored over every glitter lip gloss in a drugstore aisle for an entire 45 minutes. Forget the crisis download (for that, see the Uplifter); this partnership is about spontaneous good times.”

Definitely agree. But, in a different sense. I can’t see myself trolling the glitter lip gloss racks on a Saturday night, but nothing is more refreshing than having a friend who literally just wants to enjoy life and have fun. Everyone loves a girl who wants to have a good time and won’t settle for anything less.

The Unlikely Friend: “‘Each friend represents a world in us, a world possibly not born until they arrive,’ Anaïs Nin wrote. My friends — some twice my age, others half, some rich, others homeless, some black like me, others Korean, Mexican, Caucasian — have added richness to my life that only variety can bring.”

Agreed. College is the best time to branch out and meet a variety of people. It’s always great to have a steady group of best friends, but having other options expands your world and, I think, makes you a better and more interesting person.

When girls drink too much…

1.We have absolutely no idea where our purse is.

2.We believe that dancing with our arms overhead and wiggling our butt while yelling “woohoo” is truly the sexiest move around.

3.We’ve suddenly decided that we want to kick someone’s ass and honestly believe we could do it too.

4.In our last bathroom visit, we realize that we now look more like a homeless hooker than the goddess we were just four hours ago.

5.We start crying and telling everyone we love them soooo much.
