You walk into “The Application of Platonic and Hegelian Ethics to Business” (It’s exhausting just saying the name, isn’t it?), an extra credit symposium, take your seat between the girl who raises her hand every five seconds and the guy who comes to class only to fall asleep, pull out your books and suppress a yawn. You’re exhausted, having gotten no sleep after a late night Teen Mom marathon and barely made it to class on time.  You are in no mood to listen to lectures today. But you need the extra credit so here you are. And there your professor is, walking into class, putting down his bag, writing on the board, and then…calling in the strippers?

Yes, I said strippers. And I meant it.

This was not an exercise to make sure you were paying attention. This is reality, at least it was for the students of Jack Rapport, and assistant professor at La Salle University, who claims he was simply trying to  enrich his teaching by using real life application. And getting his students lap dances? Sure, just like the f**ksaws guy, right?

What is wrong with the world? Have all of these professors gone mad? Are these their attempts to gain media attention, be the cool teacher, or just get their students to like them? Because I hate to break it to ya, while I’m sure Rapport has given his students a great story, I don’t think this stint will win him any professor of the year awards. It’s fun in the moment, but that sort of thing won’t help students in the long run. This certainly wouldn’t get a guy on my professor of the year list.

But you know what would? A few things a whole lot easier to pull off than that, like:

1. Understanding that there’s more to college than academia.

2. Deciding not to make things difficult just because you can.

3.  Showing up for office hours.

4. Actually caring about whether or not I understand and/or show an interest in what you’re teaching.

5. Not assigning papers/test/presentations that are due the first day back from break.

6. Being willing to work with me instead of against me.

7. Not making it all about that one test or paper, or all about the participation and attendance, but about all of it.

8. Genuinely enjoying your job.

9. Not assigning busy work but rather work that actually helps.

10.  Letting us out of class early every once in a while.

Ever visited Styleta.org? Well, if you haven’t before then you definitely should now. One CollegeCandy reader, Yifan Meng, a junior at Washington University, involved in this amazing organization let us know a little bit about her budding business. Styleta is a nonprofit business that collects designer clothing and sells them online and on campus. All of the proceeds go to local and national charities.

Thanks to all the technology that’s out today, I always have the latest information. Facebook events spread the word about the parties, Twitter feeds fill my day with celebrity updates, and text messages make it easy to whisper gossip directly to anyone’s inbox.

Facebook, Twitter, and Tumblr have (sadly) become a drug to our generation (and to our parents, all of a sudden). While social media definitely has its perks, it also has many cons, and I’m not just talking about how easy it is for my entire family to become friends with me and comment on every one of my statuses.

Perks: It allows people to keep in touch with old (and new) acquaintances, post and view pictures, spread the word about events on campus, meet people, and express themselves.

Not-so-perks: It also allows people to share (um) personal things. Really personal things (really often) that just make people feel really uncomfortable and awkward.

So how do you know if you’re using it all right or oh so horribly wrong? Here are just a few signs that you overshare on social media:

We know by your tweets and statuses when you go to the restroom, shower, or don’t do any of the above. Personal hygiene is known as personal hygiene for a reason, and strangely enough, I don’t want to know when you’re hopping in the shower and curling your hair. And I really don’t know when you are feeling bloated; you don’t see me posting on your wall about how heavy my period may or may not be.

Posting class schedules is an invitation for creepers. My suite and I had what we called the “creeper wall” where we posted our schedules in our hall so we could all see when everyone was free or not. While seemingly creepy, that was really just efficient. Posting it online, however, is just scary. Do you really want everyone you’re friends with on Facebook to know where you are all. the. time? It is just asking for someone to stalk you. Creeeeeeepy.

Status arguments that exceed 40 comments are NOT okay. Oh, but they sure are entertaining. I would be lying if I said I am not thoroughly entertained by this person at night when I can’t sleep but nothing is on television or I’ve finished my book. I can always count on you, drama queen, for endless entertainment at 3 am. I keep wanting to delete you, but I just can’t bring myself to do it when your personal-life-gone-public is like a more entertaining episode of Gossip Girl.

Blogging about STDs, and not for educational purposes. True story, I have witnessed this. I understand an STD is an interesting topic to write about in order to either educate or give a first-person perspective on. In fact, people have written about worse, and it has the potential of answering a lot of anonymous viewer’s questions. But not when you are complaining about your week and off-handedly talk about how you went to the doctor and on top of everything discovered you have contracted an STD. TMI Tuesdays, I both love and loathe you.

Profile pictures that involve French kissing. There are no more words needed to say why this is disgusting. PDA is bad enough. Online PDA is disgusting.

According to an article on Gawker, there are only three types of students left in college: the snob, the dropout, and the cheater. We at CollegeCandy found this analysis to be total bullsh*t spewed by someone who hasn’t seen the inside of a lecture hall in 10+ years rather flawed, for it omitted several all-too-common college students.

Based on our own scientific research and findings (read: actually being in college), we have decided to share the stories of the most obvious of Gawker’s lost stereotypes.

These are their stories. [Insert Law and Order 'ching ching' sound here.]

The Intellectual These students love all matters pertaining to philosophy and theory. The metaphysical is their playground, and they play in it 24/7. At a kegger, they will discuss John Rawls Justice as Fairness, arguing its relevance in contemporary policies. They go to college to learn, not to prepare for what’s after their 4-years of dorm dwelling… you know, in that anti-utopian society: the real world.

The Slut The first night of freshman year, she got wasted and gave 4 football players blow jobs (which she may or may not have documented on the Internet). She’ll hook up with anything that breathes, as long as there’s enough alcohol to fuel her decision. Although the double standard is unfair, it’s far from dead and keeps the slut stereotype alive and thriving.

The Druggie Spending 10+ hours in front of the TV, this student rarely goes to class. When entering his/her apartment, prepare to be greeted by a red-eyed, XBox playing 20-something and a mushroom cloud wafting from a three-foot bong. Oh, and watch out for the bong water-soaked rug. Later that night, the same student is overly energetic, his/her pupils so dilated you can barely see their irises. How did they suddenly get such a second wind, you ask? A little drug called cocaine…and a whole lotta Four Loko.

The Frat Star Bro, this kid is sick. He loves pastels, lax pinnys, and crushing brews. He’s got a closet full of classic Nikes with a few pairs of boat shoes mixed in. When he’s not banging chicks, he’s watching football with his bros and talking about banging chicks. All whilst gripping a Red Bull. Sick, dude.

The Gordon Gekko Focused on landing a job on Wall Street, this student is all business. He/she is often spotted in a suit, bag in hand. They know all about the DOW and the daily stock market fluctuations. There is often overlap with the Frat Star and the Druggie. Just ask Bert the Broker. But, no matter his or her personality, this type of student has his/her eyes set on one thing during college: how to make a crapload of money post-graduation.

Tell us: What other college student “stereotypes” are still out there and thriving?

Here’s their big finding: “Students who go abroad while in college are likely to increase or even double their alcohol intake while they’re away.”

Wow, I know.  Let that sink in for a minute.  Would you have ever guessed that while visiting countries with lower drinking ages, things called discotheques, and a plethora of town pubs, college students would have the balls to increase their booze consumption?  Color me shocked.

As someone who’s now very interested in subscribing to this extremely scientific journal, I just want to alert the editors of a few more studies they might be interested in conducting (but really don’t need to).

Just Discovered: Drunk Students Eat More Pizza than Sober Students
Drunk munchies happen.  Usually around 3AM as the bars are closing and that pizza place across the street is still open.  Two slices with pepperoni and extra cheese sound like a brilliant investment in your health, so you stumble to the counter, place your order, and throw down the $2.50.  For some reason, going through these same motions in broad daylight really doesn’t hold the same appeal (unless it’s post-kegs and eggs on game day).

Standards Lowered After Six Hours in Bar, “Beer Goggles” Found as Cause
It’s late, you’re drunk, and that extra-long single is going to be mighty lonely when you get back to the dorm.  What’s a girl to do?  Chat up that mediocre-looking, possibly younger dude standing at the end of the bar, that’s what.  His eyes are a little off center and his nose hooks to the left, but your room’s dark.  No biggie.

Breaking News: Most Papers Written Only Twelve Hours Prior to Deadline
Two weeks to write six pages on Charlotte Bronte?  Please, you can knock that thing out in an afternoon.  Except one afternoon interrupted by “something better” leads to another and before you know it, you’re staring at a blank word document, a setting sun, and a clock you swear is six hours fast.  Procrastination is a bitch, but it’s better than being responsible and missing out on all those hours you spent Facebook stalking.

Solving the Pre-Game Mystery: Why Students Drink Before They Drink
Have you ever tried to explain the concept of pre-gaming to an adult?  Did they look at you like you had a problem and throw around words like “addict” and “AA meeting”?  If you’re in college, it makes sense to drink before you go out drinking.  Imagine walking into a bar completely sober.  Yikes!  All those strangers, that loud music…what am I supposed to do with my hands!?  I’m getting social anxiety just thinking about it.
