Celebrities That Deserve a Cameo More Than Mel Gibson

I was so excited for The Hangover 2 to come out next year. So excited. Like already have my tickets, waiting in line starting now excited. And then news broke that a certain celebrity was going to be making a cameo in the sequel, much like Mike Tyson did in the original. Except this celebrity isn’t a boxing legend with a drug problem. It’s a middle-aged white guy with rage issues. Mel Gibson.

Is it bad that since reading of this new addition to the cast, my interest in the movie has dropped about 200%? Mel makes my skin crawl. Seriously, I know the dude wants to push “restart” on his career, but I can think of a bajillion other celebrities who deserve a second (or third, or fourth) chance to change their image more than a wife-beating, anti-Semitic a-hole.

Amy Winehouse
Not only is she legitimately super-talented, she writes songs with names like “F*ck Me Pumps.” Talk about someone who deserves a chance to further pursue her art! Those are bona-fide dance hits, without which our Thirsty Thursdays would be significantly duller. There are only so many times you can shake your butt to “Apple Bottom Jeans,” but Amy’s “Rehab” is forever.

R.Kelly
When he’s not being gross, Mr. Kelly is actually pretty funny…whether he means to be or not. “Trapped in the Closet” was an epic musical adventure that had me biting my fingernails with anxiety. So maybe he touched minors inappropriately. Give him one of those hot pink molester license plates, keep him away from parks and schools, but let the guy act!

Lindsay Lohan
Once upon a time, she was a cute little redhead with a twin. Then God smote us all by revealing that that twin was merely cinematic trickery and that our favorite ginger had a cocaine problem and a crazy mother. Ugh, unfair! Hasn’t Linds has put in the time, people? I mean, seriously, she actually put in time. In jail. And rehab. Doesn’t she deserve a second chance to fill the hole she left in our Parent Trap-loving hearts?

Kanye West
Sure we love him since he started Good Fridays. A new free Kanye track every week is pretty effing spectacular. But his image still screams arrogant jerk, no? Stick him in The Hangover 2 as an abused member of the hotel staff, perhaps sent on a mission to track down Taylor Swift CDs for Zach Galifianakis, and I think hilarity just might ensue.

Robert Downey, Jr.
Okay, fine. So his drug problem is old news and his reputation has pretty much been restored. Iron Man 1 and 2, Sherlock Holmes, Tropic Thunder, Due Date…it’s clear he can land a blockbuster movie. But still, he’s hot. Like really, really hot. In that DILF kinda way. They could have just thrown him in The Hangover 2 for a scene with Bradley Cooper to make the hearts of girls everywhere sparkle more than Edward Cullen in the sun.

Maroon 5- Call and Response (The Remix Album)

While we anxiously await the release of some new music from Maroon 5 (why on Earth does it take them so long?), we can temporarily get our Adam Levine fix from Call and Response, an album of Maroon 5 remixes. The album makes me happy because it remixes the songs enough that some of them actually sound like new tracks. But it also makes me wonder if Maroon 5 desperately wants to get some play time in the clubs. Whatever the case, this whole album may be worth it just to hear the Mark Ronson “Wake Up Call” mix featuring Mary J. Blige. Not to mention, the album includes remixes with Of Montreal, Cut Copy, and Deerhoof.

If you tell me the hotness that is Adam Levine is involved, I’ll buy it, but I’m eager for something new from the boys of Maroon 5.

Brandy- Human

Wait, Brandy still exists? Didn’t she kill someone in a car accident a while back? Well, yes. But now she’s ready for her comeback and you can almost feel the pain of her past through the music in her new album, Human. The title track relays to the public how sorry she is for what we’re to assume is the accident: “I make mistakes but I can’t turn back time…I’m only human.” But despite all this pain, Brandy somehow manages to make most of the songs on the album positive and cheerful. I have to admit, I’ve been a fan of the upbeat track “Right Here (Departed)” from the first time I heard it on the radio.

Brandy may never reach her “That Boy is Mine” fame again, but she’ll definitely get some serious radio play-time.

Cat Power- Dark End of the Street EP

This EP full of more Cat Power cover songs is perfect for listening to on a cold, lonely night. Her beautiful version of Otis Redding’s “I’ve Been Loving You Too Long (To Stop Now)” caused me to hit replay over and over. Dark End of the Street is certainly not an upbeat album, but each song completely wraps you up in the beautiful crooning of her voice. Cat also covers songs by James Carr, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Sandy Denny, Aretha Franklin, and the Pogues. Some tracks don’t quite match up to the originals, but that’s OK because you may never have heard the original anyway. And what you don’t know won’t hurt you.

Cat’s back covering the classics and helping you feel a little bit more depressed…in a good way.

Let It Rock: This Week’s New Releases Feel Like a Circus

Britney Spears- Circus:

“There’s only two types of people in the world. The ones that entertain, and the ones that observe.”

So opens the title track on Britney Spears’ latest CD, Circus. Britney is clearly in the first category. And this is the album we’ve all been waiting for. The one that marks the start of her comeback. Wait, wasn’t her last album supposed to be her comeback? Well, forget about that because this time it’s for real. If you happened to take an hour out of your life to watch to her MTV documentary on Sunday night, you’d probably say she appears to be back on track. Then again, we’ve seen that before. But if Circus is any indication of Britney’s well-being, it’s safe to say the girl is back on her game.

Songs like “Circus” and “Kill the Lights” chronicle the tough times Britney’s had being in the public eye, but they’re not downers in the least bit. She even squeezes in a song about motherhood (wait, remember she’s a mom?) right at the end called “My Baby.” Let’s just hope she actually remembers that she has two babies. Circus is also loaded with songs I can see myself getting down to in the basement of my favorite bar. Clearly I’ve already done so with “Womanizer,” but “Leather and Lace” and “Mmm Papi” also have highly danceable beats.

Mr. Photographer? I think Britney’s finally ready for her close-up.

Akon- Freedom:

How can you not like Akon’s distinct, synthesized voice? His newest album, Freedom, features the hit single “Right Now (Na Na Na),” which I was just dancing to on Friday night. And while I’m always up for jamming to some Akon, it’s the special guests on the album that really make Freedom what it is. With collaborators like Wyclef Jean, T-pain, Lil’ Wayne, and Young Jeezy, there’s no way this album could be bad. You know everyone is going to memorize “Holla Holla” singing, “That’s why I’m tryna’ holla holla…let me holla at you girl”

Besides all the holla’ing, the album’s actually quite nice when you sit down and listen to the lyrics. Who knew Akon was such a sensitive soul? I have to say I kind of miss Wyclef Jean when he’s not around, so I was pretty thrilled to hear him on Akon’s “Sunny Day,” a song about leaving the ghetto life behind for a happier life. And then there’s a whole song about a girl being “so damn beautiful,” appropriately titled, “Beautiful.”

I’m not saying Akon’s got staying power, but I am saying I’d dance to his music any day.

Music From Degrassi: The Next Generation:

Maybe you don’t watch Degrassi. I won’t judge you if you don’t, but I will say you’re missing out (we’ll save that chat for another time). But even if you’ve never seen the show in your life, you’ll probably still fall in love with the show’s soundtrack. The only problem? The best of the music is so cool, you might already own most of it. From Paramore’s “Misery Business” to “Neighbors” from The Academy Is, most of these tracks are pure treadmill music, which is always a plus in my opinion.

But I’m sure there are some tracks you don’t own and may never have heard of. Much like the show, the music on the Degrassi soundtrack is predominantly directed toward teenagers. But who doesn’t enjoy teen music? All Too Much sings about liking someone as “More Than a Friend” and All Time Low croons emo-ish songs about first breakdowns and bad DJs. No matter who you are, the Degrassi soundtrack will help you remember a simpler time when high school really was the end of the world.

I’d take a break from watching Degrassi to listen to the Degrassi soundtrack. But only until I start feeling like I’m going to slit my wrists. Then it’s back to watching the show.

The Love List: Thanksgiving Leftovers and My New Best Friend (you’ll want to be her bff too)

[Welcome to my Weekly Love List. A list, on all things I love. Because if I love them - well then obviously you may (and should) love them too. As the Backstreet Boys song says (and yes I am actually quoting them) “My Love is All I Have To Give.” So with that throwback, here are this week’s list-worthy things…]

1. Pumpkin Mousse. It may be post-Thanksgiving but while the rest of the world has moved on to egg-nog or latkes, I’m more like Ross Gellar and still craving Thanksgiving leftovers. So if you still need something to be thankful for make this low fat amazing pumpkin mousse and then thank me later.

What you need: 2 Packets instant fat free/sugar free vanilla pudding, 1/2 tsp pumpkin pie spice, 2 cups skim milk, one 15 ounce can of pumpkin, and one tub of fat-free Cool Whip. Make the pudding with the milk and once it’s ready, fold in the other ingredients, stick it in the fridge, maybe throw some ginger snaps on top and you’ve got yourself some guilt free leftovers.

2. While I may not love Miley Cyrus, I love this girl who loves Miley Cyrus. Seriously, over 1 million hits, tons of tribute vids back, and over 12 different videos. And those special effects? Ahhhmazing. Check out her version of Disturbia too… I sort of want to be her best friend.

3. Britney Spears’ comeback. I know, I’m a sucker like everyone else, but that magazine cover? The vid? I’ve been working out to old school Brit all week and I’m just rooting that our favorite baldie makes this comeback big (not lame-o like the last one). I know you are all excited for the documentary tomorrow night. Watch it with some pumpkin mousse for a double dose of love.

4. Kiss My Face Organics Skincare. This skincare line is fabulous because it’s all natural, meaning it’s not too harsh for your skin and gets your skin glowing the au natural way (instead of with all those harsh chemicals making their way into every other product out there). Available at Whole Foods.

5. Four Christmases. I saw it last night and I am in love. It’s that perfect balance of holiday cheesiness that you are sort of embarassed to admit you want to watch this time of year (especially when you’re, um, JEWISH) with a side of Vince Vaughn funny-ness. Seriously I could marry that guy.

Mission Impossible: Can MTV Bring Back Britney?

After watching her win 3 Moonmen at MTV’s VMA awards last night for a song that is good but not her best by far, we here at CC are pretty confident that MTV is making it their personal mission to give Britney Spears her second comeback.

It makes perfect sense. To MTV, Spears is like Candy Mountain – except instead of candy the mountain is full of cold, hard cash. If she were to have a fabulous comeback, the boring and bling-obsessed music video channel would no doubt feel the full effect of her resurgence.

For your consideration, here is a “leaked” video of Spears practicing some kind of performance. She admittedly looks fantastic, even if her dancing is slightly lacking the pop! of her 20-year-old self. I guess we should let her off the hook, though. She did have two kids and go crazy. That combo must take a lot outta a person.

An Open Letter to Miss Britney Spears

Dear Britney,
I hope this letter finds you well. Or at least wearing a pair of underwear. I am writing to you today on behalf of all of us 20-something women who spent our high school and college years dancing/working out to your music and thinking of your ridiculous abs as we lay on the gym floor willing ourselves to do one last crunch.
We are worried about you, Britney.
It was only a few years ago that you sat atop the world in a one piece leather jumpsuit. Then along came Kevin. You fell in love, you got married and decided to bow out of the spotlight for a bit. That’s fine. I could have used a few new songs on my workout playlist, but everyone is entitled to a little “me” time. But, somehow, “Britney” time turned into “Trailer Park” time and we saw what can now be considered the furthest fall for a celeb since Michael Jackson started touching little boys.
What happened behind the closed doors at camp Spears? How did you go from the hottest thing on the planet to this?
Britney, while you totally screwed the pooch at the VMA’s (a bra and panty set? Really?!) and, while we’re at it, at raising children, it really isn’t that hard for you to make a comeback. Maybe not as a mega pop star, but at least as someone not totally crazy/white trash and who has a shred of dignity. And who can keep her eyelashes in the correct place while doing a giant interview on NBC.
Here are a few tips:
1.	Accept Your Body….for what it is. Not what it once was. We all want to look like this, but some of us look like you…I mean, this. Cover up, honey. It is much sexier.
2.	Lay Off The Booze: Partying with Paris is fun, but it is not for moms. You don’t see Gwen Stefani out getting wasted and hugging toilet bowls, do you? No. You also don’t see people talking shit about her all over the media. See the connection? No? Maybe we should talk about this one on one.
3.	Wear Underwear: Not sure when this went out of fashion, but I swear I have seen your va jay jay more often (and up close) than I my own lately. Everyone knows you have one; you don’t need to show it off.
4.	Step Away from the Calf Boots: I don’t know where this obsession came from, but boots that cut you off at the fattest part of your legs is not flattering. Especially when paired with a see through top that barely covers your ass.
5.	Stop Performing: Just take some time to be a mom. I am not saying you can’t ever perform again, I am merely saying that until you remember what parts of the song you are supposed to lip sync to, you should probably just take a little break. Take some time to be a mom. Get back in shape. Figure out what your children’s names are. Anything! Just, please, stay away from the bedazzled bra and panty combo.
It really isn’t that hard, Brit. And the possibilities are endless. You could have another top record, you could earn the respect of millions, and – hopefully – you can make people stop talking about how great K-Fed is in all of this. (Seriously, how low have you sunk when a man that makes zero dollars and created Po Po Zao is seen as the better parent?) Just work with us, woman! Bring us back to the Britney glory days. And make this bitch stop crying.

Leave Britney Alone! (Or Don’t)

Leave Britney alone!
No? You don’t want to either? Like the majority of America, I watched the Video Music Awards for one thing and one thing only: Britney’s comeback.
Criss Angel was going to help her walk though mirrors.  Maybe there’d be smoke.  A snake?  High wires?  Explosions! Something big.
At 9:00 pm on the dot I ran out of the shower and sat in front of the TV like a little kid on Saturday morning, eagerly awaiting one of the “biggest comebacks in decades”.
And then, we all know what happened.
I don’t know a lot about dancing, but I know that when you start off your routine looking like an awkward 7th grader at their first boy/girl dance, something is wrong.  I also know almost falling over in your shoes and needing your dancers to help you up and down steps is something my grandma does (except my grandma doesn’t use dancers…that would be excessive).
50 Cent seemed confused, Rihanna laughed her ass off, and Mindfreak Moron was nowhere to be found.  There was no smoke, no theme, and not even a good costume (you’ve had two kids, girl.  Give those sequined undies a rest).
However, some people are just begging you to leave poor Brit alone. She “doesn’t deserve” this media backlash, they say. She’s “not well”.
Well, not only is this the silliest defense I’ve ever heard (last time I checked someone can’t force coke up your nose or a drink down your throat) but this over-the top little man is the original Drama QUEEN. He’s truly unbelievable.
As for Brit not being “well”…she’s an addict, but you don’t catch a drug addiction. It ain’t the flu. She got herself there.
Truthfully, it looked like Spears not only forgot some of the words to her highly repetitive song, but she forgot all the steps.  The number was at times so painful, so lackluster, I was instantly flashbacked to a performance of my first grade’s Thanksgiving Spectacular show where I blanked on all the steps in the Turkey Jiggle.
I looked ridiculous, but I was 8, and had an audience of 20.
…and I wasn’t dressed like a bedazzled ho.

Is It All Over For Lindsay?

The only reason I hesitate to proclaim LL’s career completely dead is because comebacks are so big these days.  She could land herself a E! series, or maybe even some giant Barbara Walters special where she cries.  There’s a chance Lindsay could rise again.
But just in case she doesn’t, Hollywood had better start looking for new big-boobed starlets.
A New York Times article (yup, even the grand old NYT is digging through Tinseltown garbage these days…) claims now that Lindsay has been arrested twice, she’s basically uninsuriable.  And when you’re uninsuriable in Hollywood, everything fades to black.
If a production company can’t be sure a star will show up for work or stay out of jail, it’s unlikely she’ll be hired. One missed day can mean hundreds of thousands of dollars down the drain, and almost no actress is worth that kind of anxiety.  Combine Lindsay’s unpredictable behavior with her less-than-stellar film record, and you’ve got a girl who can be (and most likely already has been) replaced.

Poor Things, a small independent film (that was supposed to begin shooting shortly) in which LiLo had only a supporting role, was recently plagued by rumors of an early demise after Lindsay’s first rehab stint.  Since the starlet was arrested a second time, the movie’s producer claims the film is “moving on” – supposedly without the troubled star.
Frankly, I couldn’t care less if Blohan’s career was over.  Sweetheart’s gotta get herself to rehab and stay there.  She’s gotta make sure she doesn’t die.  Let’s keep our body from shutting down first, and worry about our next paycheck later.
And look, if Corey Haim can resurrect his career, than there’s certainly hope for Lindsay.

I’m Still Rooting for You, Britney

I can’t pinpoint exactly when my irrational affection for Britney Spears began. I remember watching “…Baby One More Time” on TRL, but I’m not sure it goes back that far. Maybe it started at a school dance, when I requested “Oops!… I Did It Again.” Or it just might have to do with the fact that I can also enjoy an entire family size bag of Cheetos now and again.
I do know that when Britney stopped by The Late Show with David Letterman last November, rocking a sleek new haircut and a hotter body than we’d seen in quite a while, I cheered. In fact, I was inspired. Thanks to the aforementioned bags of Cheetos, I wasn’t looking so hot myself at the time, but if Britney could pull herself together, I could find my way back to the gym, too!
And when she dumped K-Fed the very next day, I really began to hope. “I’m so proud of her,” I told my suitemates. “In fact,” I declared, “if she comes out with a new album, I will seriously buy it.”
Well, you know what happened next. There was drinking, bloating, shaving her head, in rehab, out of rehab, ridiculous wigs, more rehab. And those are just the highlights. Her “comeback” mini-tour wasn’t exactly encouraging, either.
At the very least, I was optimistic about her hair. After all the cheap extensions and switching from blonde to brunette every few days, I thought shaving it all off was a blessing in disguise. Haven’t we all made reckless decisions that damaged our hair, and wished we could just start fresh?
But then, just as soon as her two-inch tresses were long enough, the bleach and the bad extensions were back again. For me, this may have been the final betrayal. Haven’t you learned anything, Britney? Anything at all? Evidently not.
And yet, somehow, there is still a part of me that dares to dream. Please, Britney, I know you have it in you. Years ago, it was your bare midriff that motivated my daily crunches. Just leave your hair alone for a while, okay? I’m still rooting for you.
