The Catholic Church has a longstanding reputation of opposing homosexuality, contraception and abortion. Though Pope Benedict XVI has expressed his views that condoms are making the spread of AIDS worse, during his visit to Madrid, he gave priests permission to lift excommunication for women who confess to having an abortion.

Say what? So while I am not Catholic, I’ll save you the Googling and explain the sitch to you as best I can. Under normal circumstances only certain priests are allowed to lift excommunication (aka getting kicked out of the church) for women who have had abortions. From last Tuesday to Sunday, 200 booths were set up in the Madrid park as part of World Youth Day 2011 events. For a full six-days women who have undergone abortions, as well as men who have pressured women to have abortions, were being forgiven.

Those who traveled to Madrid to confess were forgiven, for just the cost of a plane ticket. The allowance of priests to forgo excommunication as a result of abortion was not extended to the US, where a 28 per cent of women seeking abortion identify as Catholic. An article in The Guardian suggests dropping attendance rates in European churches, is an attempt to reach out to young people and bring people back to the church.

While the local diocese occupied the 200 booths in the Madrid, the Pope himself heard confessions from just three individuals during the celebration.

“Are you sexually active?” inquired Dr. Nancy with her beady eyes judging my contraceptive-popping self. What the hell are you supposed to say in that situation?

“Well, you see Nance, I did hook up with my ex-hook up two weeks ago but other than that it’s been quite the dry spell…” Nobody really wants to delve into their complicated lust life with a complete stranger.

This got me thinking, how does anybody really know if they are “sexually active”? To me, activity isn’t all-or-nothing; there are several levels to be aware of. Dr. Nancy, for instance, would abide by the criteria of “hyperactivity.” In other words, if you have ever touched a boy or even really thought about it, you are sexually active for the rest of your life and probably well after you’re dead.

Now no offense to my good pal Nance, but I personally prefer to look at sexual activity like geologists study volcanoes. By this definition, an active girl is one that is currently “erupting” or at least hooks up regularly. What constitutes hooking up is up to you and the righteousness of your moral code. What also is up to you is how you define the term “regularly.” For the sake of escaping the scrutinizing eye of a university nurse practitioner or a Catholic priest, you may choose to equate “regularly” with “every day.” That way you can have no qualms with looking into those judging eyes and confidently stating, “No, as a matter of fact, I am not sexually active.”

For those of you that are like me and (sadly) haven’t gotten any in a while, you may fall under the classification of dormant. You have hooked up in historical times, but you are not currently sleeping with anybody. But not to worry ladies, there is always the promise of future sexual eruptions (thanks, Snoop Dogg). Even the experts say, “The eruption that follows long dormancy is violent.” Hey, you may just be the next Mount Saint Helens of the bedroom.

The rest of us fall into the category of extinct. By definition, extinction implies that there is no evidence of any activity within recent memory. Contrary to common belief, however, this group is not just for the virgins. It may also include those that tend to hook up in any sort of intoxicated state, impairing any and every memory of activity.

No matter which category you identify with, the choice is yours and yours alone. And no matter what, don’t let anyone make you feel insecure about your frequency of eruption, not even your own Dr. Nancy…

I am so sick and tired of hearing about Jesse James trying to apologize and make up excuses for why he decided to cheat on Sandra Bullock, America’s favorite sweetheart. It’s bad enough that he cheated on Sandy with multiple women, but the fact that he’s going to the media (i.e People Magazine, Nightline) and explaining what prompted him to cheat (apparently his Dad was abusive to him as a child) just proves that he needs to grow a pair and be held solely responsible for his actions.

During his Nightline interview, James explained that one of the main reasons he cheated on Sandy was because as a child, his father was emotionally and physically abusive to him, going as far as breaking his arm and beating him. Although I do think abuse is an extremely touchy subject and it would be stupid to make up stories about abuse, I don’t even know what to believe anymore. Here, the fault lies in not only James but also Nightline. By granting him an interview and allowing him to share his side of the story, the public is encouraged to sympathize with him and maybe even give him a free pass for his infidelities. It’s a win-win situation for both sides: Nightline gets the viewership and publicity of the interview and James gets more coverage and money in return.

Abuse or not, what people need to understand is that Jesse James initially made a vow to Sandra Bullock during their marriage and he was the one who chose to sleep with Bombshell McGee (the tattooed up adultress who, in desire for her 15 minutes of fame, blabbed her big mouth to the world). At the end of the day, by excusing his “transgressions” (ha!) to his father’s abuse, James is the coward copping out and not stepping up to his own responsibilities.

The same can be said for Lindsay Lohan, the actress we all love to hate. Lohan, who once used to be one of Hollywood’s most sought out actresses, is now a hot tranny mess who is shamefully wearing her SCRAM ankle bracelet. Many people blame her parents for her derailment, but honestly, she’s the one snorting all the coke and downing Vodka like it’s water. Lohan should really be taking advice from Drew Barrymore, who, after her stints in rehab and failed marriages, is now Hollywood’s Golden Girl.

Sucky parents or not, celebrities in the likes of James and Lohan need to realize that for all that they’re given in the world – a life of fame, luxury and money – they need to step up and seriously take some personal responsbilities to their action. I absolutely do not feel sorry for James and hope that he locks him and his junk away from the rest of the world and becomes eternally miserable for cheating on Miss Congeniality.

Suck it Jesse.

Confession: I don’t wash my hands after I go to the bathroom. Unless, of course, there are other people in there. I just don’t see the point; I use plenty of toilet paper to block pee from getting on my hands, so why waste the water? I am also a sitter. Confession: It was the week before Spring Break, I was running low on groceries and didn’t think it was worthwhile to go shopping so close to leaving. One of my roommates is a passive-aggressive, annoying bitch and, luckily, also happens to be a compulsive food hoarder. So, partly because I was jonesing for some hummus and partly because I wanted to make her as angry as she makes me, I broke in to her tub of hummus every day and ate some. Sometimes I dipped pita chips in there and other times, when the pita chips were gone, I just went to town with my fingers. And on the last day, after polishing it off, I left the empty container in the fridge just to piss her off even more. It was the best hummus I’ve ever eaten.

Confession: I’m single. Very, very single. And for the most part, that’s fine. But for some reason I make up a boyfriend when I’m talking to strangers: store clerks, waiters, the annoying chatty people I sit next to on Southwest flights. (Gah! What is it about Southwest that makes people wanna be BFFs?!) I don’t know why I do it, but my stories get pretty elaborate, too. He’s got a name, a major, and summer job at a big bank in New York City. He loves sushi but hates my addiction to Thai food. We’re going up to his parents’ cottage for a long weekend soon, and, OMG, he’s just as obsessed with the Food Network as I am! Honestly, it’s sad and pathetic. Confession: Like most girls, when I like a boy I’ll look for any excuse to text or call him. But I don’t want to be texting him all the time if he’s not responding. So then I start going crazy waiting for him to reach out to me and trying to come up with excuses to reach out to him. One time (OK, maybe more than one time), in an effort not too look desperate or clingy, I had to come up with a really good excuse to text a boy. So I dragged my friends out to get some drinks with me just so I could send him a drunk text. I even purposely misspelled words so it was more obvious that it was a drunk text. Seriously, I probably spent a good 5 minutes drafting that text so it looked drunk, off the cuff and flirty.

It’s so embarrassing thinking about it now, but it just seemed so logical at the time.
