15 Most Controversial CollegeCandy Posts Ever

Rarrrr!

All of the CollegeCandy writers are strong, smart and…er…opinionated people. So we’re not surprised when some of our blogs turn into heated battlegrounds.  But unlike some other sites, we don’t let this scare us.  In fact, we take pride in our super-opinionated writers AND readers. After all, that’s the whole point of CollegeCandy — a place where every college girl gets her voice heard.

So to honor those voices and give you, our opinionated readers, a chance to raise yours once more, we’re bringing you the 15 most controversial CollegeCandy posts of all time. (Well, besides our most recent commentary on Demi Lovato. That wound’s still fresh.)

Break out the claws, ladies!

1. Trying To Understand The Curvy Girl Backlash
By CC Staff
Actually a response to a previous post’s backlash, this post tackled the body image debate that is getting everyone’s panties in a bunch.  The point is raised that va-va-voom celebs like Salma Hayek and Beyonce do not belong in the same category as other women who are a little bigger, like Nikki Blonsky.

2. Taylor Swift Is Really, Super, Totally Overrated
By Lauren
Let’s face it, the girl’s voice is pretty forgettable.  Sure, she’s adorable and wholesome, but why does there have to be a full-on riot every time someone utters a less-than-glowing word against T. Swift?

3. Should I Feel Guilty That I Can Afford An Unpaid Internship?
By: CC Staff
Unpaid internships are kind of the best (and only) way to get your foot in the door for so many careers these days, so why should any of us feel guilty if we have to ask our parents for financial help while we work hard to ensure a future career? Read More »

Lindsay Can’t Do Marilyn. Seriously.

35789025.jpgStripped down to a blonde wig and sheer pink scarf, a (dubiously) newly sober Lindsay Lohan was tapped by Bert Stern to recreate “The Last Sitting”, which was Marilyn Monroe’s iconic final photo shoot.

Stern, the original photographer of the 1962 shoot, sought out Lohan because he wanted a “controversial” star for his recreation, yet the result couldn’t be further from the original work.

Nice try, Mr. Stern, but there really is no one in Hollywood that could have done this unnecessary reshoot justice. You can’t even compare the two women. The only good movie Linds has done since “The Parent Trap” was “Mean Girls” and that had a lot to do with the fact that Tina Fey wrote it.

I want to take it seriously because I take Marilyn Monroe seriously, but these new pictures are absolutely devoid of meaning. “The Last Sitting”, was shot six weeks before Monroe’s death and has become representative of her career; “in them, we see an actress whose comedic talents were overshadowed by her sex appeal, a woman who is cannily aware of her pinup status.”

With Lohan – all I see is a bad wig and breasts that shouldn’t sag that much on such a young girl.

Lohan’s poor imitation lacks authenticity. Stern might see parallels between his two subjects, but using Lohan just sullies the vulnerability and sex appeal depicted in Monroe’s film; Linds’ eyes are utterly expressionless. Read More »

Breasts Are Best! Or Are They?

boobs nude sexMy breasts and I, we have this understanding.

We have an understanding that they are awesome.

I LOVE my ladies. Peaches and Cream to be exact. Which is what I named them when I was 12 and they were beginning their slow journey to becoming the best boobs ever.

But what does scare me is that with the largest breasts in the family, I know I am probably predisposed to the breast cancer on my mother and my father’s side. And Lindsay Avner knew the same thing. In fact, she got tested for a gene mutation that is inherited and carries an 85% risk of having breast cancer.

And when she tested positive, she cut off her boobs.

Double mastectomies aren’t uncommon in today’s society, but when Lindsay opted for the surgery she was only 22 years old.

Being that three generations of women in her family had all had breast cancer, I understand Lindsay’s desire to want to protect herself from what she felt was inevitable.

But I just don’t know if I could part with my boobs until I had to. Or at least until they start sagging a little more.

Lindsay is using her surgery as a platform for letting other high-risk women know their options. She started Be Bright Pink as an educational and support outlet for those susceptible to breast and ovarian cancer, both of which her mother had. Her crusade is understanable but completetly controversial. Read More »

Don’t Stop Believing- In Hillary Clinton?

Hillary-and-Bill-ClintonHillary Clinton’s new campaign ad mocking the finale of one of television’s most popular dramas has been causing a stir in the pre-election candidate market. In this clever spoof, Hillary and Bill take on the roles of Tony and Carmela by sitting at a table in mock New Jersey diner, while Chelsea is seen through the front window attempting to parallel park her car Meadow-style. Hillary’s campaign song comes on the jukebox and the screen fades to black. How clever.

While this culturally savvy spoof shows Hillary’s aptitude to interpret American culture, does it showcase any of her abilities to be the president of The United States? The references made to Smash Mouth, her horrific campaign song by Celine Dion, and the overlying theme of the Sopranos make the ad mirror some type of commercial advertisement for American media. Amy recently explored the concept of candidates creating MySpaces to reach out to the youth of America in their own territory. While I appreciate the fact that Hillary is attempting to reach out to young voters who will often ignore politics in favor of entertainment, another part of me wonders whether or not I feel disrespected by having a presidential candidate marketed to me as a celebrity-like figure.
