History of the the Trend: Converse Sneakers

[This post and contest come hot off the Internet presses from our friends at CollegeFashion!]

I have a confession to make: I own way too many pairs of shoes. My favorites are my pointed-toe flats and my summer boots, but even as my wallet gets skinnier, there’s another pair I can’t live without: my Converse sneakers. They’re comfortable, colorful, and perfect for all of our favorite summer activities. These shoes have been around for over 100 years, and they’re still as hot as ever. Read on to find out the history behind these classic kicks.

Wardrobe Wish List: Anthropologie Splatter Sneakers

Something from Anthropologie is always on my wish list (okay, maybe more like five or six things), but I decided a long time ago that a column based solely on their merchandise would be a tad boring, especially for those of you that aren’t obsessed with their girly-vintage-hippie chic vibe.

So in order for an Anthropologie item to make it to the top of the wish list for the week, it has to be something special. And that is exactly what the Splatter Sneakers are.

Amazingly special…and to-die-for.

I love my Converse. I could wear them every day with every outfit. Hell, they’re so worn in I could sleep in them.

But obviously a plain sneaker gets old, and I often sigh a huff of sadness knowing that I have to leave them in my closet for the jeweled flats that will only leave me with multiple blisters. Read More »

Fashion Porn: Sequin Orgy

sequins introWith the world premiere of This is It and recent trips to costume shops, I’ve got Michael Jackson on the brain.  And when it comes to the King of Pop’s style, one thing stands out: that single, sparkly glove.  While donning a sequined glove is a very literal way to pay tribute to MJ (not to mention impractical – won’t your other hand get cold?), sequins are EVERYWHERE this year, and there are much more creative ways to show your love for the moonwalk master.

Or, you know, just for fun, fabulous style.

Thanks to those innovative designers lining 5th avenue in NY, sequins have taken on a totally new look in 2009 and  have become suitable for both day and night.  A cute, sequined cardigan could add sparkle to your morning lecture, or add a dose or personality when you’re heading to work.  On the other hand, a pair of made-for-a-rockstar sequined leggings are the perfect party pants.  Or, if you are more interested in adding a subtle dose of shine to your everyday outfit, you could opt for sequin shoes or the perfect sparkly accessory.  No matter how you want to wear them, there is a sequined item (or many, many fun shiny things) out there for you!

Love Em or Hate Em: Colorful Sneakers

shoe.jpgI am about as preppy as they come. I own the Polo Oxford in every color, wear v-neck sweaters more than is socially acceptable, and think tortoise glasses are the epitome of cool.

So I was mighty surprised when I found myself coveting these sweet sneaks at Foot Locker last weekend.

I don’t know what it is, but I am in love with the retro sneaker that has made its way into every corner of the fashion world this year. Maybe its a deep desire to be cool. Or maybe I’m just sick of my brown Converse. Or my entire “going to the library” look.

I want to buy them, but I’m just not sure, 1) how to wear them, and 2) if they are totally

lame/ugly/horrible. I mean, I rarely get out of the Gap so how am I supposed to know what is trendy?

Help?

What do you think about the colorful sneaker? Love it or hate it?

Cheap, Hot Trends for Fall/ Winter Fashion

target3.jpg

We all look to magazines for our fashion sense and know-how, but what if we can’t afford all those styles in Elle and on the runway? College Candy understands your pain (because we also like to split our budget between cocktails and clothes) and we want to help you get the fabulous looks at a fraction of the price.

This winter jeweled clutches are all the rage. After Sex and the City, Fendi has become way more popular, but who can REALLY afford a small clutch for more than a grand? Here is cheaper version…on the left is the Fendi, on the right is a La Regale from Macy’s for a mere $39.00. Read More »

The CC Weekly Weigh In: Wardrobe Staples

closet.jpgYou have stuffed so much clothing into your closet that the door won’t shut. The bottom of your Ikea drawers are drooping from the weight of all your long sleeve tees shoved in there.

And you didn’t even bring everything you own to school!

Yet, no matter how much sh*t you have, you keep wearing the same three things over and over. We know how that goes; we too have that one favorite thing in our wardrobe that we just can’t stop wearing. With everything. For every occasion.

So what if it has holes in the armpits? And who cares if it is 4 years old? That is fashion perfection.

Below is a list of our writers’ favorite wardrobe items. You may want to consider adding these items to your over-stuffed closet; obviously, they are totally worth it. Read More »

Want a Free Pair of Chuck Taylors? What About a Trip to NY?

conversejouneyssh1.jpg

I am not a musical person. I can’t hit the beat on Guitar Hero and anyone who has ever heard me sing tries to block out the memory. But if you love the whole music thang (and are actually good at it) this may just be your lucky day.Converse and Journeys have paired up to bring you the “Get Out of the Garage” music contest! Basically, you can win a free trip to NYC for 4 days, 3 nights of free studio time to create and mix your own song!

Yeah, that’s right: record your own freaking song.

All you have to do is head to the mall and pick up a self-addressed envelope at any Journeys shoe store. Pop a recording of your jam into the envelope (only one song, ladies) and get that badboy in the mail. Not a fan of snail mail? Don’t feel like wasting precious gas goin’ to the mall? No problemo; you can upload your song here. Easy as pie.

There will be a whole lot of judging, but Downtown Records will choose the top song . The winner will take the prize of a free trip to NYC for 4 days, 3 nights of free studio time to create and mix their own song.

The remaining 9 finalists will receive a pair of Converse shoes, a gift certificate from Converse, and prizing from Guitar Center to be determined. All songs submissions must be sent to Cornerstone for judging by September 15th.

Not a music fan? Have no fear. The people over at Converse/Get Out of the Garage love CC so much they have given us a prizepack to award to one lucky reader. After all, we can’t all be rockstars, but that doesn’t mean we don’t deserve cool sh*t. Read More »

Do As I Say Not As I Do: Mom’s Guide to Internet Dating

internet dating

My brother met his wife on an internet dating site (and I heart her). I have countless family friends that have met their spouses on the internet. I have several close friends who are currently dating someone who they met online (and they are C.U.T.E.).

And I have a fellow blogger friend who openly discusses her trials and tribulations of the online-dating world.

From the outside, I am a huge proponent of internet dating. The reason some of my ex-single friends found boy toys online? MY urging for them try it out!

“It’s really hard to meet people these days” I tell them.

“You know you aren’t going to meet the man/woman of your dreams at the bar”

“It is so not a loser thing to do anymore- soo many people I know met their boyfriend/girlfriend/husband/wife online”

“Just TRY it”

And on and on I go.

Oh. My. God. I sound JUST like my mother! Read More »
