Ah, summer. There’s something about this time of year that brings back memories of the beach, county fairs, baseball, and, of course, family vacations.  Although at times, my family drove me crazy on those trips and I’d much rather have been anywhere else than with them, there are still tons of great memories of all those long drives to see relatives, camping trips, and visits to amusement parks that filled my summer vacations growing up.

So in honor of both summer (which officially starts next Monday) and Father’s Day this Sunday, I give you: Dads on Vacation. Read More »

I’ve always dreamed of having my own personal shopper or stylist.  Don’t get me wrong, I loooove to shop, but searching through racks and racks of clothes to find something I like can get exhausting, especially with those overly perky sales people breathing down my neck. And it might be nice to sometimes have things picked out for me by somebody else.  Too bad that dream is unlikely to ever become a reality (that is, unless I win the lottery).  Or, at least that’s what I thought before I found out about Covet, a free site that works as your very own online personal shopper.

How does it work?

The first step is the Stylyzer™.  You are shown a series of two pictures of celebrity looks at a time, and you simply choose which is closer to your individual style for each pair.  Once you’ve answered quite a few of these questions, you can continue on to create your style profile.  You can also choose to answer more questions regarding your clothing and shoe sizes, brands you love and hate, and your price range for each product category.  There’s even the option to specify specific types, colors, or patterns of clothing you don’t like so that you won’t get those suggested to you. Every movie has iconic and memorable moments.  You know what I’m talking about: the “King of the World” scene in Titanic, The Wizard of Oz‘s “There’s no place like home,” or even “We’re going streaking!” from Old School.  These are the parts you quote over and over, and part of the reason you watch the movie again and again.

In the past, if you wanted to watch your a particular part of a movie, you’d have to pop in the DVD (or even the VHS) and skip forward until you found the scene you were looking for.  Now, that seems like a lot of work for our internet-centered culture, and now we’re more likely to just search YouTube.  But that isn’t always the best option, either – the video clips you find on there are most likely against copyright law to even be on YouTube in the first place, are probably longer than what you want to watch, and are usually bad quality. Or, worse, they are just reenactments by bored 16-year-old boys in their basement on a Saturday night. Read More »

Summer is finally here for most colleges, and I know I’m not the only one celebrating. I love having the summer off to hang out with my friends, go to the beach, and not have to worry about having to wake up on time for class.  Even though I love having time off, however, I feel like I should put some of that free time to better use than just lounging and drinking—like learning a new language!

I’m not talking about spending your time and money on summer school, your local community college, or Rosetta Stone—I’m talking about Livemocha.  Livemocha is a website that offers beginning, intermediate, and travel online courses for over 30 languages (for free)! The lessons offer instruction in reading, writing, and speaking, which are evaluated by fellow Livemocha users who speak the language you’re learning. Read More »

I don’t know about anyone else, but I’ve sort of been getting bored with most of the clothes in my closet lately.  I tend to keep wearing the same things again and again, while other stuff keeps getting pushed to the back of the closet.  I’d love to get rid of all the stuff I’m not wearing and raid the mall for some new stuff, but I can’t really afford to do that.  But recently, I’ve found a way to get rid of the clothes I don’t want anymore AND get some new stuff at the same time–without having to spend a lot of money, either.

ThredUP is an online clothing exchange that lets you trade the clothes in your closet you don’t wear anymore with clothes other people don’t wear anymore.  Right now, the site’s only set up for shirts, but I’m betting (or at least hoping) that new categories will be added soon. Read More »

When I’ve got a problem that can’t be solved, the only way I know how to feel better is to eat things dipped in frosting vent to someone else and hope they’ll give me good advice.  Usually, the people I go to are those closest to me: my boyfriend, my BFFs, or my mom—but what to do when I can’t go to any of them about a particular crisis (because it concerns them or it’s something I just don’t want to share)?

I recently discovered a little site called Blah Therapy that solves the problem of not having someone around when I need someone to vent to. Basically, Blah Therapy is a chatroom site whose purpose is to bring complete strangers together to help each other with their problems by pairing those needing help with those willing to help. The school year is almost over, and although summer vacation is right around the corner, the end of the school year also comes with a lot of stress: studying for finals, writing term papers, and (for seniors) graduation.  Thinking about it too much is enough to make anyone depressed.

But dwelling on all the negativity can make you forget about all the really great things that the last few weeks of the semester bring, like year-end parties, no more classes, and beautiful weather.  That kind of thinking is what the new site Life is Beautiful is all about: spreading positivity through the good things in life. Finding the right outfit to wear for a job interview, a night out, or a first date can be difficult—you want to look great, but sometimes you just need someone else’s opinion on how an outfit looks or whether it’s appropriate for the occasion.  Sure, you can usually just ask your friends what they think, but what do you do when no one’s around and you desperately need a second opinion?

Go Try It On is your answer.  In this new online community, users can share outfits and get opinions of whether it looks good or works for the occasion.  Go Try It On works two ways: you can either  “give an opinion” or “get an opinion.” Read More »

Life can be pretty overwhelming sometimes: balancing classes, a job, and social life can sometimes be too much for one person. I know it gets hard for me to remember all that I have to do—especially schoolwork.  I have a regular planner that I carry around in my purse to help keep me organized, but I don’t always remember to look at it every day when I get home, which means sometimes I forget about a reading assignment or worse, a test… which doesn’t really help my G.P.A.  I know I need a better way to organize my schoolwork, but I haven’t found a way that works for me yet.

A few years ago, Andrew Schaper was a high school student with the same organization problems I have.  In order to solve these problems, he created Soshiku, a website that helps you manage and keep track of all your school assignments. Read More »

Web Spy: Party School Texts

By now, everyone knows and loves (and quotes) the website Texts from Last Night. (Even my parents.) Most college students can relate to the drunken and crazy antics described in the texts show up on there. I know my friends and I can spend entire afternoons poring over that site, laughing until we pee a little.

And now there’s a new site out there inspired by TFLN that promises the same kind of fun and amusement: Party School Texts.

Like TFLN, Party School Texts works by having people submit the hilarious texts that they’ve either received or sent themselves.  What’s different, however, is that it’s geared exclusively at college students.  Founded by four college students in Florida, Party School Texts seeks to determine which school in the country is truly the #1 party school by ranking the drunk texts sent by its students.
