Who inspires your style? Or better question, WHAT inspires your style? Many of us use T.V characters (like Joan Holloway) or celebrities (like Chloe Sevigny) as style inspiration, even though, most of the time, they are being dressed from head to toe by the best stylists. Which we don’t have. And sometimes it’s damn near impossible to work their Hollywood looks into our not-so-Hollywood lives. I’ve made it my mission to tap into the mind of a fashion stylist and show you how to take your style inspiration – whatever it may be – and make it more you!

Although today she is synonymous with drugs, alcohol, plastic surgery and being an all around hot mess, let’s rewind about 18 years back to the days when Courtney Love was in her prime.  In the ’90s, Courtney Love was one of the few women who represented the grunge music genre. As is usually the case, with different genres of music come different ways of dressing (or in her case, throwing on whatever was on the floor – clean or dirty – and peacin’ out,) and hers rocked. Pun intended.

Although there is much controversy over Courtney Love as a person – like whether she “killed Kurt Cobain,” or that time she crashed Kurt Loder and Madonna’s interview flashing all her drunken bits on national television – I couldn’t care less, because, well, sometimes the crazy people have the best style. And there’s something about Courtney’s mix of innocence and rock star, sweet and edgy, angel and devil, that makes me forget about all the crazy sh*t she says and does.

So, if you want to channel Ms. Love with your wardrobe and not with the booze/smudged red lipstick/tiara/stringy bleached hair/tattered-on-purpose dresses, all it takes is a pinch of sweet and handful of edge.

The key to Courtney’s signature look is taking something frilly and girly and mixing it with the unexpected edgy pieces. I love the way black booties can totally change a feminine eyelet dress, and how the brightest red lipstick makes it that much harder. And how, somehow, putting those three things together works and works well. The best part: you probably already have all the pieces to make this work. Just grab your girliest summer dress, a hot pair of shoes, some black tights, muss up your hair a bit, stain those lips red (stain provides a more intense hue) and you’ve got the Courtney Love look without the Courtney Love, you know, everything else.

5. Stevie Nicks is a harder partier than all of Van Halen? Wow…Stevie Nicks couldn’t hold David Lee Roth’s sweaty, vodka-stained jockstrap. Van Halen – even just David Lee Roth and Eddie Van Halen – drank, smoked, snorted and screwed their way across the country and out of millions in possible tour revenues by being f-d up to perform.

But you know what…OK, maybe Fleetwood Mac knew how to ball, what do I know?! Even my parents thought Fleetwood Mac were gay.

4. I am a more hardcore partier than Britney Spears. In the financial world, people refer to “old money” and “new money.” Brit-Brit is new money, yet she scored higher on Spinner’s list than Iggy Pop, one of the oldest money Legends of Rock.

Iggy has been hammered and high since before Britney was conceived in her mom’s broken down Ford. Mr. Pop has been in and out of rehab more times than Brit has worn a thong. She’s a slave to attention, not partying hard.

Waylon Jennings snorted over $1500 a day (in the 1970s) on coke, with a group of hookers in a cheap hotel – all of this while Willie Nelson was sitting 20 feet away smoking pot and playing his guitar. Amy has not only just started being a junkie, but even worse – she can’t handle a high. Either tone it down or amp it up, Miss Winehouse/Little Miss Hipster – ease up on the woe-is-me ballads and find a metal guitarist to help you pick up the tempo.

2. ODB higher than the Rolling Stones and Sid Vicious?! What What WHAT?! Look at Keith Richards?! He died 27 years ago, but the whiskey in his blood stream is keeping his body animated. Yet the Stones are lower ranking than ODB, Courtney Love and Pete Doherty? I am sorry, but who the fuck is Pete Doherty? Sid died at 21 after a huge 10 day drug binge – call me after 10 days of hard work Mr. Doherty.

Living a less than stellar lifestyle health-wise does make you look older. All those late nights and foreign toxins going into the body…sounds kinda like college, huh?

Well, this hard partying/quick aging trend is catching on for the young celebs of our generation — not just the rock and roll greats of years past.

The UK’s Mirror had a recent article up about Real Age vs. Body Age, and rated unhealthy celebs like Britney Spears and Amy Winehouse against uber-healthy Madonna.

The results:

Britney: Real AGE: 25, Body AGE: 30

Amy Winehouse: Real AGE: 23, Body AGE: 31

Courtney Love is a name culturally synonymous with many things, undoubtedly an icon in her own right she has more than made her mark on the music industry, the tabloid circuit and even invaded the Golden Globes. However Love’s success did not happen overnight or in a Hollywood fairytale. She has no distant Coppola relative nor did she descend from a pop dynasty. She was in fact at war with her label, her drug addiction and her public image all at once. The widow of late legend Kurt Cobain, she has faced a constant unavoidable comparison despite her own professional accomplishments and critical accolades. Her band Hole achieved success in the mid nineties creating an army of 12 year old feminists searching for a viable role model, armed with Hello Kitty backpacks and Emily Strange stickers they are all grown up now. But the question is: Are they still listening?

Love is clean and sober…No really. Gone are the days of throwing compacts at Madonna, falling down in public or getting arrested at her own concert. I know a part of you is disappointed, not ready to part with the novelty, predicting a future misstep or public wardrobe malfunction gracing the cover of US Weekly. But it makes you wonder, are we socially conditioned to want our heroes to fail or have we just lost faith in good old second chances?

America’s Sweetheart was the tongue in cheek title of Love’s first solo album, with little marketing, a small tour and unfinished production, the sales were short of impressive though the album was well received by fans and critics alike. It seemed all too soon for an artist dealing with personal turmoil and financial strain. Suffering from a major relapse, to top it all off she was arrested for accidentally hitting a fan with a microphone stand at a free New York concert. It seemed that for Courtney catching a break just wasn’t possible. Arrested again later that year Love was sentenced to rehab losing custody of her daughter (who she maintains was always well cared for), and sight of her promising career as a musician.

Her rehab facility had no celebrity trapped door leading to the VIP section at Hyde, nor did they let her go on nature walks through Hollywood bars and clubs, believe it or not Love actually rehabilitated. Having gone back and forth from clean to sober, critics may be rolling their eyes which is why she made sure not to walk out empty handed. Her newest album Nobody’s Daughter was originally titled “The Rehab Demos” written entirely within the facility she was sentenced to on producer Linda Perry’s acoustic guitar A fusion of Stevie Nicks, Bob Dylan, and Courtney’s distinctive rasp her newest record has been five years in the making, leaving Hole fans anxious for a triumphant return. Already critically acclaimed it seems that this January Courtney will be getting the second chance she has been hoping for. Judging by the demos and live sets it seems “The Queen Of Noise” is back and this time standing completely on her own. Just as significant as the yell of Courtney Love is her whisper, as she softly speaks in the song Reasons To Be Beautiful: “It is better to rise than fade away”, a spin on Cobain’s lyric implying it was better to burn out, yet another sign that Love has learned from her past and that she ready to take on her future with open arms and more than a few power chords. As far as her comeback goes she will be performing in small venues this summer but the approaching dates have yet to be announced. The world is waiting Courtney, we just hope you meet us there.

What has happened to you, Courtney?

We all know she isn’t the brightest crayon in the box, or the most put-together chick who ever married a famous grunge musician, but….gee wiz! Something is very, very wrong with this lady.

According to my personal internet gossip diva, Perezhilton.com, Courtney Love has fired back against all those reports that she did something ‘medical’ to transform her body in only 4 months into it’s newly emaciated form. If you go to her fansite, you can read a wonderful incoherent rant where almost nothing is spelled right or even has the correct number of vowels. Apparently, Ms. Love is so pissed at people saying her weight loss isn’t ‘natural’ that she forgot to put on her first grade English hat.

I’m not sure about you, but judging from those pictures I’ve seen floating around, it’s sort of impossible for me to believe she lost all that weight in a healthy way. Last time I checked, working out and eating right doesn’t make your body transform into the female version of E.T.

All I know is, I wouldn’t put her in my bike basket in an attempt to get her back to her alien family.
