[The following post comes straight from our BFFs at CollegeFashion. If it weren't for them, we'd still be wearing platform sneakers.]
Here at the University of Oklahoma, you will find a pair of cowboy boots in nearly everyone’s closet. Wearing them to class isn’t really the norm (unless you’re a frat boy and are also rocking a Columbia fishing shirt and backwards Ralph Lauren Polo hat), but girls here save them for occasions like home football games and country concerts. At OU, cowboy boots signify that you’re ready to dance and have a great time. I’ve had the same pair all through college, and the more beat-up they get, the more comfortable they feel!
Though cowboy boots aren’t unusual in parts of the midwest and the south, in many regions of the United States (and in other countries) these boots can be a neat way to make your outfit stand out. It’s not always easy to see cowboy boots as a fashion statement rather than just a part of a costume, but that’s why I’m here. Need to brush up on how to rock cowboy boots without looking ridiculous? [Welcome to Celebrity Chic on the Cheap, where our style guru takes a celebrity look and breaks it down for you, our poor college fashionista. What does that mean? It means that while the celebrities (like style superstar, Rachel Bilson) are spending $5,000 on an ensemble you don’t have to. All you have to do is click on the goods and - boom - you can buy the entire look. For cheap. Yes, we know - there is a spot for her in heaven.]
I adore Selena Gomez. Her face looks as if it were lifted from a porcelain doll. Her hair is so luminous and luxurious. Her music is perfect for those times when you’re dancing in front of the mirror in your PJs with your hairbrush (in contrast to those times when you’re dancing in front of the mirror in your highest stilettos and a bottle of Smirnoff). She is the personification of rainbows and unicorns and puppies and everything that is fluffy and G-rated in this world. I love it.
Selena’s style is just as unpretentious and down-to-earth as the rest of her image. She’s totally youthful, fresh, and laid back. She is that girl who swears she “isn’t even into fashion,” but she always looks current and hip, and you never see her wearing the same ensemble twice.
She is essentially every friend I’ve ever had and secretly resented totally admired.
Luckily, this easy-breezy style fits perfectly into the college style scene and, even better, is not at all difficult (or expensive) to emulate. Read More »

When summer rolls around, boots get shoved to the back of the closet along with heavy coats, sweaters, and scarves. But who these days can afford to buy a wardrobe for each season? And who wants to give up wearing the fabulousness that is a hot pair of boots for nearly half of the year?
Well, you don’t have to! Boots can totally be rocked in the summer if you do it right.
Do like Kate Moss and pair boots with denim shorts in the summer, or rock them with a dress for a new look. When Fall rolls around, switch into skinny jeans or leggings. Voila – year-round fashion.
Here are some ideas for wearing those boots right now: Read More »
I’ve been an avid fan of Rachael Bilson’s style since first seeing her in The Last Kiss. I mean, come on- the girl’s got killer style. Anyway, this post is not going to be about her. (Ha-ha! Fooled you with the picture, didn’t I?) This post is going to be about her outfit, namely: the (hyphen) dress.
In recent times, the fashion industry has been renaming things in a way that would make i-Apple proud. For years I’ve watched as designers attached a hyphen and the word ‘dress’ to the back of everything and well, called it a dress: the t-shirt-dress, the oxford button-up-dress, the polo-dress, the sweater-dress, the hoody-dress (?!-wtf, American Apparel)…
What really ticked me off was that the extra three inches or so of fabric they added to the bottom of the SHIRT always translated to three times the cost. Not cool.
Naturally, I was outraged. But when lower-end chains started picking up on the style (and as a result, dropping the prices to fit my recession friendly budget), my outrage turned into amusement, my amusement into curiosity, my curiosity into desire, and my desire into I-GOTTA-HAVE-IT-RIGHT-NOW!!
So even though I am completely sold by this perfect balance of casual and chic, I get that not everybody is swayed by the “–dress.” Note: First convo with the bf after my shirt-dress purchase…
BF: It’s a shirt
Me: NO, dummy! You obviously don’t know fashion- it’s a shirt-dress.
BF: Like I said… it’s a shirt
Sigh. Can’t win em all. But for those of you who are interested/see the gloriousness that is the “-dress,” here are some super cute options. Read More »
So we are finally in the dog days of summer (which I realized when I went for a run at noon). Some of us are working, going to school, or schlepping around interning. Others are laying by the pool sipping sangria (*jealous*). But, I think we can all agree that a break of any kind is welcome. Especially when that break is a trip to somewhere cool, offbeat and–the best part– cheap. So pack your favorite flip flops, airy sundress and camera and head somewhere, anywhere but here. Might I suggest any of these destinations:
Isla de Vieques, Puerto Rico.
This 21 by 5 mile island is referred to asIsla Nena by residents, loosely translating into “virgin island”. Located only 6 miles off Puerto Rico’s coast, it is a hotbed of natural beauty and tropical activities. You fly onto the island after flying into San Juan, Puerto Rico, so be prepared with a your iPod, a magazine, eye mask or Valium–whatever it takes to get you to board an 8 seater plane to Vieques Airport.
Once you’re on the island, you can stay anywhere ranging from $90 a night B&B’s to luxury hotels, so whether you’re on a typical college budget, or you happen to have a trust fund, there are accomodations for you.
Activities on the island include: hiking, snorkeling and diving, biking, fishing, sightseeing and dining in Bravos de Boston, Vieques’ most fashionable town. However, the highlight of this destination is definitely its Bioluminescent Bay. The bay is filled with phosphorescent microorganisms, that glow in the dark when disturbed. Nighttime charter boats take you on a guided swimming and kayaking trip to the brightest bio bay in the world. If you’re looking for a tropical getaway that won’t break the bank and is off the beaten path, Vieques is it. Read More »
Every girl knows that shoes can make an outfit.
Right this very moment I’m staring at my sisters cream and navy Marc Jacobs patent stacked heels just wishing I didn’t have to strap on my cowboy boots for my night time hostessing job.
Cowgirl chic is not an easy to look to pull off.
In college, it is all about comfort and when the weather gets too cold for your rainbows and your Uggs are well, fug, it’s nice to have a few warm standbys.
This season, instead of my All-American chucks, I’m eyeing a pair of high top sneakers. I tried to convince my boyfriend that this style was totally him but he wouldn’t take the bait, so I’m going to. This pair from Nine West are more lady with an edge than rockabilly hipster, which I’m digging for fall.
The only shoe I fully rely on come fall are my flat boots. No girl can live without a warm and comfy pair to pull on at a moments notice.
Jeans, dresses, skirts, the flat boot works with every article of clothing. And finally affordable shoe designers are making them with some darling details. I can’t get enough of the buttons on these Steve Madden’s and the zip off tops of these Abaete for Payless. Read More »
