Women Who Should Have Been the 2011 Woman of the Year

As the year comes to a close, it’s time to find out just who made the biggest impression over the past 12 months in the world of celebrities. With her contributions to many charities, a hit album and an open voice about her own personal struggles, Celebuzz named Demi Lovato the 2011 Woman of the Year. But we here at CollegeCandy have a bone to pick with this. Is she really a “woman”? She’s 19 and seems to still be going through the transition phase that many of us college girls are going through. Do you ladies feel like “women” yet? Because I sure don’t. In the words of Ms. Spears, Demi is “not a girl, not yet a woman.”

So I’ve compiled a list of some other women who have done a super job of being themselves this year and have left an imprint on all of our hearts. I now present to you 10 women who I think should be named the 2011 Woman of the Year. I hope my sarcasm is apparent, I laid it on pretty thick.

Today we received a press release about MTV’s New Year’s spectacular. I was excited to read it because I love watching the MTV New Year’s show. It tends to be more fun than the other family-friendly networks. Except this year, it seems like MTV got dropped on its Moonman head, because the New Year’s special looks worse than the movie New Year’s Eve. Obviously 2012 is going to be the year of the apocalypse because this special looks anything but.

On New Year’s Eve, MTV is going to have performances by Demi Lovato, Selena Gomez, J Cole, Jason Derulo and Mac Miller. I know who these people are, but I don’t care about them. They are obviously appealing to the tween demographic, but I didn’t think MTV was for tweens. MTV is MTV! They could have gotten anyone. They should’ve gone for a huge star that appeals to most young adults like Lady Gaga or Katy Perry or even Taylor Swift. But instead, MTV wanted to make the last year of earth the year of the tweens and torture the fully-grown rest of us (as if the world ending and everyone dying isn’t enough).

If that’s not bad enough, the special will also feature appearances by Vanessa Marano and Katie LeClerc. What? You don’t know who those people are? They are the stars of the ABC Family show Switched at Birth, DUH! Seriously, MTV, you couldn’t even get stars from MTV SHOWS?!?! I would have been happy if the stars of 16 and Pregnant came on the New Year’s Eve show and all pop out a baby at midnight. I know Tyler Posey from Teen Wolf will be hosting, but that’s the ONLY MTV star. Can we just rename the show True Life: Tweens Taking Over the Earth During the Apocalypse.

While this all makes me come to the conclusion that the end of days really is coming, I don’t think I’ll be fully convinced until E! creates a New Year’s Eve Special full of Kardashians and Jenners.

Sometimes when people tell me that I should unplug my chargers when I’m not using them, or that I should not run my A/C as much as I do (I live in Florida!), I just brush it off. I understand and care about global warming and climate change, but it seems like such a big thing that nothing I do will help. BUT GUESS WHAT??? Climate change could ruin Starbucks! I’m going to start unplugging everything in my apartment because I don’t know what I’ll do if I can’t get my Java Chip Frappuccino in 20 years.

While we all know that college students rely on Starbucks to get them through all-nighters and early science labs, celebrities reply on Starbucks even more. I can’t go a day without seeing a paparazzi picture of some celebrity sipping through a green straw. What are these celebs going to do if climate change kills Starbucks? Maybe then their maids will have to make them coffee. GASP!

Although the 2011 VMAs that took place this past Sunday were somewhat boring and uneventful, there was a lot of buzz about Demi Lovato’s new look. The “Skyscraper” singer walked the red carpet wearing a tight, body-hugging silver mini-dress with a plunging neckline. She accessorized with some metallic bangles and a pair of Louboutin pumps, and even though 99% of us would never be able to pull off a look like that if we tried, Lovato was subject to a lot of criticism that night.

So what was everyone upset over? Her body.

Before entering a treatment center in October of 2010, Demi was a completely different person. The stress of constantly being in the public eye had really taken a toll on her, forcing her to develop an eating disorder in the process. She had a very, VERY slim frame and almost looked a little unhealthy. After entering the rehabilitation clinic, Lovato was able to recover from her disorder and also recovered from a lot of mental problems. That being said, she obviously gained a little weight.

The weight-gain and her new curvier figure caused the star so much Twitter hate, that she eventually had to tweet out the following:

@ddlovato: I’ve gained weight. Get over it. That’s what happens when you get out of treatment for an EATING DISORDER.

@ddlovato: Guess what, I’m healthy and happy, and if you’re hating on my weight, you obviously aren’t. #UNBROKEN

Thing is, I’m a little confused. Sure, Demi definitely gained weight (as you can tell by comparing before and after photos), but who in their right mind would classify her as “fat?” I’d kill to have that body, and I know I’m not alone.

…Or am I? Even though Hollywood has been trying to embrace more full-figured women in the past few years by promoting healthy lifestyles and promoting plus-size stars, I can’t help but feel like people are still constantly pressured to be a size 2. After some of the most beautiful bigger women in the industry shed all their weight (Jennifer Hudson, Raven Symone, Jordin Sparks, etc…), it makes me wonder if that really is the key to success. It’s no secret that Demi has an amazing voice, but will her new body boost or shrink her fan base?

Aside from the Hollywood aspect of it, what does it mean for female body image as a whole? If some people look at Demi’s body and think “fat,” what hope is there for girls who are her size or larger? Should we be embracing healthy bodies instead of just skinny ones? I think as a society, we should embrace and encourage more women to go for the healthy look and not the impossibly tiny look. Maybe if there were more women who looked like Demi proudly flaunting their stuff, we could save a lot of young women from the stress of negative body image.
