All my Jewish peeps out there know that Passover is a time where you have to hold your head up high and say, "Sure, my non-Jewish friends get to eat Peeps and Reese's peanut butter cup eggs (where the PB to chocolate ratio is so. much. better.), but, hey, I get all those fake desserts that taste like crap yet still make me fat AND constipated. So glad we wandered in the desert for this.

Passover. A week of torture for the hungover soul. All we want is carbs and all we’ve got is cardboard. Saweet.

All my Jewish peeps out there know that Passover is a time where you have to hold your head up high and say, “Sure, my non-Jewish friends get to eat Peeps and Reese’s peanut butter cup eggs (where the PB to chocolate ratio is so. much. better.), but, hey, I get all those fake desserts that taste like crap yet still make me fat AND constipated. Mazel Tov to ME!” So glad we wandered in the desert for this.

Passover is a time where we must get creative in the kitchen. Top Chef has nothing on me after 8 days of no bread. So, being that I’ve been a Passover Jew since I left the womb, I will share with you my 5 best tips for surviving the Big P.

1) Don’t think of it as an “OMG WTF am I supposed to do without bread?!” sitch. Instead, think of it as a week long cleanse and use it as a time to detox; stick to salads, fruits, proteins, almonds, sweet potatoes and dark chocolate (K for P of course). All of those foods will keep you fuller longer and after a day of really craving the carbs you will feel a whole lot better anyways. Besides, its not like matzoh satisfies that carb craving, anyway.

2) Two Words: Matzoh. Pizza. It never gets old. It always tastes good. Load that bad tasting piece of matzo with sauce, cheese and a ton of veggies (the more fiber with that matzo the better – trust me) and you will forget how much you hated this holiday in the first place.

3) It’s the one time of year you can get kosher marshmallows and I looove to stock up. My favorite Passover sweet treat from childhood: take 4 large marshmallows, stick them in the microwave till they start to get really big, then pull them out of the microwave while still hot and put some chocolate chips on top so they melt right away. Amazingness. Great on top of ice cream too!

4) Manischewitz wine. Freshman year we got a FABULOUS game of Kosher for Passover wine pong going. Yes, the hangover was a biznatch and my teeth felt like they were rotting from all that sweet wine, but it was f-u-n. Just be advised: red wine is a little more noticeable on shirts than beer when that ping pong ball makes the wine splatter everywhere, so I’d avoid wearing white.

5) Plan ahead. Nothing is worse than coming home late night and watching your non-jewish friends delve into their Dominos and Easter baskets and you’ve got those icky jelly candies and chocolate covered jelly rings. Thank you for that, Moses. Stock your fridge up with some Temp-Tee (only the BEST creamcheese around) some cheese and pizza sauce, some Passover chocolate, marshmallows and the like. Throw some (all) on a piece of matzo, stick it in the microwave and you’ve got yourself a mish-mash on matzoh!

Dr. Mark Hyman is the best doctor you’ve never met. He is a best selling author and is smart yet realistic with his approach to health, wellness and weight. CollegeCandy got the chance to talk to him about all things health that you should know.

After reading his book UltraMetabolism, Dr. Hyman had me convinced to follow his 3 week detox. It seemed impossible, but I figured if Britney could make a successful comeback when all odds were stacked against her, then surely I could follow this seemingly impossible feat for 3 weeks, no sweat. No dairy, no gluten, nothing artificial, nothing processed, no simple sugars, no peanuts, no eggs. No CAFFEINE. What?!

It’s been a challenge and while I’ve had a few slip ups here and there, this chick right here who was going to Starbucks twice a day is now sipping… decaf. I’m not bloated, my skin does not look like I belong in 7th grade and I wake up in the morning with energy. Such a weird concept, I know. I urge you to read this interview then pick up UltraMetabolism and his newest book, The UltraMind Solution and give it a try.

And even if you don’t, at least promise me you will give up the Splenda and 100 calorie packs.

The Five Questions We Ask Everyone

1. What are five things you can’t live without?
My Family, exercise (I’m kind of addicted to that – I like to play tennis, basketball, cross-country skiing), my friends, enough sleep, really good food.

2) What is the most trouble you ever got into in college or your best college memory?
I never really got into trouble in college. Although I could have gotten in trouble since I was getting stoned in the line for graduation when we were going by all the professors and we were just passing a joint along the line.

3) What is your motto or the advice that you live by?
There’s actually four things. It’s four rules for a healthy culture, and healthy relationships. One is “show up,” two is “be present,” three is “tell the truth [without pain of] judgment,” and the fourth is “be open to the outcome.”

4) What is your favorite song to sing in the car, or at karaoke, in the shower, at the bar, or wherever?
I really like “Crazy Love” by Van Morrison.

5) 10 Years from now, you will be…
I will be giving away my time to create, to educate and research, and to help change medicine so that everybody can get access to what I think is the most powerful discovery since the theory of evolution or the discovery of relativity theory: that the medicine that we have now really has the capacity to create health for everybody, that as soon as we understand it and apply it, it will really transform the healthcare system and our health in general.

5 Questions for Dr. Mark Hyman (and this was difficult seeing as he’s just full of really great information!)

1) Why are 100 Calorie Packs so bad for us? It seems like a great way to portion control, but you say otherwise? Can you suggest some snack alternatives?
Why are they bad? It’s very simple: because they’re not real foods, and they don’t give you real energy or real health. They simply are chemicals put in a nice package, they taste good because they’re full of sugar and fat, and they actually do the opposite of what you want: they make you more tired and fatter, rather than give you more energy and make you thinner.

I think the calorie thing isn’t so much the issue as the quality of the food. Quality, not calories, so when you focus on the quality, the calories don’t matter so much because your body knows what to do with it all. I suggest things like whole food bars, for people looking for a quick snack. Lara bars are great, because they’re basically nuts and dried fruit – they’re just real food. Nuts and fruit are a great snack, and I think those are real easy to get.

(Click here to check out his segment on the Today show exclusively on 100 Calorie Packs)

2) Okay so once and for all – why do we need to STOP with the artificial sweeteners we put in our coffee, in every ‘low cal food’ and the cans of Diet Coke we consume? (You know aside from all the chemicals!)
There’s actually very good studies on this. Aside from the fact that aspartame actually has effects on your brain that aren’t great—it can cause headaches, and other problems—the main reason is that it actually makes you eat more, it makes your body confused and think food’s coming, so it gets ready by producing insulin, which actually drives your appetite, and you actually gain weight, and slow your metabolism. You basically are hungrier, and you gain more weight, and you slow your metabolism, and you gain more fat.

3) If you could recommend five things that our readers could start doing RIGHT now, even before they have a chance to go buy your book, what would you recommend?
• Eating breakfast, and having protein for breakfast; I think choosing quality food – basically, real food – when you can.
• Cutting down on the amount of sugar and sweets, breads and muffins that people eat—flour and sugar should be eaten as a treat, not as a staple.
• I think in terms of managing weight and everything, it’s important to make sure you don’t eat too late. If you want to look like a sumo wrestler, you should have dinner and go right to bed, because basically your body stores food instead of burns it. Stop eating 2 to 3 hours before bed.
• Exercise
• Start taking a multivitamin, Vitamin D, and Fish Oil daily

4) Is it bad to eat the same foods every day? I read your body gets used to what you’re eating, and then it stops working and plateaus. Are there some things we should actually be eating on a daily basis?
That’s not exactly it. We need a diversity of foods. There are a lot of different nutrients in different foods, so if you eat the same thing every day, you might not be getting all the right vitamins and minerals, all the right nutrients. You really want to be getting a variety.

5) As college students we live on: Coffee, Alchohol, and sweets – do we need to swear these off?
Coffee: Genetically, we’re all different. Some people really aren’t as affected as much by it because they can metabolize it; some people are crawling up the walls, so you have to look at your own response to coffee. But in small amounts, a cup a day, it’s really not going to be a problem for most people. The problem is if you use it to give you energy, you’re actually getting false energy, because you slowly will find that you’re actually depleted and you get more tired in the afternoon, and then you feel worse, and then you need more coffee in the afternoon, and it’s a vicious cycle. If you actually stop caffeine, you’ll actually end up having more energy in the long run.

Alchohol: I drink! I like tequila. I think it’s important to realize that it’s about balance, and that if you’re drinking six beers a day, or even two beers a day, then that might not be the greatest thing for you, but if you’re enjoying it on a regular basis and you’re not abusing it, then that’s ok. Beer is probably not the best because it’s very high in sugar. Red wine is good. Tequila is also good.

Sugar: I like dark chocolate. I think dark chocolate’s great, provided that you don’t eat a whole giant bar.

Got Questions for Dr. Hyman? Leave them below and we will see if we can get them answered! In the meantime, go pick up his books. They will really change your life and the way you feel.

I’ve never really been much of a health nut. Sure, I try to throw some fruits & veggies in my diet and I drink light beer, but other than that my nutrition quotient is pretty low. I still consider pizza and pasta the two most basic (and essential) food groups.

Despite the fact that I know as much about nutrition as say, someone on Celebrity Fit Club, I actually wasn’t surprised to see this article in the NY Times about those miracle “flushes” and “cleanses.” Basically, lots of doctors says they’re bullsh*t.

According to the article, many western docs think that detox diets are not only not good for you, they could also potentially be harmful. One doctor in the article was quoted as stating “What ends up being consumed during a ‘detox’ are essentially stimulants, laxatives and diuretics.” Ew.

Okay, let me back up a second for those of you who may be as nutritionally clueless as I am. Most “cleanses” are like extreme diets that you undergo for a couple days or weeks. Basically, you avoid certain foods and replace them with nutritional and herbal supplements. In turn, your body that was once full of evil toxins is supposed to rejoice (after you feel like absolute sh*t for a few days) as you remove what the article calls “sludge” from your “constipated” body.

Take, for example, the arguably most famous detox program, The Master Cleanse. What you do is replace all solid food with a little mixture of lemon juice, cayenne pepper, maple syrup and water for a minimum of 10 days (but some people do this for up to 45 days. What the f*ck?!). Other detox diets reduce meat and/or solid food intake. Even crazier still: some diets advocate the use of enemas, colonics and herbal laxatives to rid the intestinal track of toxins.

Yes, seriously.

But what the article is getting it as is that even though some detox diets are good in theory and provide you with some vitamins and minerals, all you’re really doing is starving yourself. Or sticking something up your ass. Not fun.

And what’s even scarier is that, according to one doctor in the article, there is absolutely no solid evidence that detoxification programs actually work.

My take is this: I believe in everything in moderation. If you want to “cleanse” yourself of the “evil toxins” in the food we eat, go for it. But I think staying away from high fructose corn syrup, foods high in trans fat and sugar, and maybe cutting back a bit on the booze should do.

As for me, the only detox diet I plan to try this year is one that consists of pizza, beer and chicken wings. And maybe some celery sticks for good measure…and because they go so well with that ranch sauce I’ll be dipping my buffalo wings in. Yum.

So it’s been a week since I decided to start Dr. Ian Smith’s 4 Day Diet. I’ve completed two modules, resisted a whole lot of temptation, and successfully started the plan.

I told myself during these first two phases that I would follow the plan as strictly as I possibly could. Afterall, the beginning is the kick-start, sets the tone, and would get me into the right mindset.

The first four days (detox) consisted mostly of fruits, green veggies, brown rice, beans, legumes, and a little bit of yogurt and eggs. I never realized how great of an option (and how filling) beans were. I made a fabulous bean salad drizzled with some balsamic vinegar and lemon juice that was scrumptious and kept me full all afternoon.

The second set of four days (transition) was similar food-wise to the Detox days, but started to add back some more food. Colored veggies, proteins, even two snacks a day from a huge list in the back of the book (ranging from cottage cheese to a sweet potato to 1/2 cup fro yo etc).

I noticed the first day of detox was the hardest day all week. My body wasn’t used to no sugar (aside from the sugar in fruit) so I felt a bit sluggish, which I anticipated.

But after day one, I was bursting with energy.

I’ve been at this weight loss game for awhile, but this week forced me to wipe away the fog that was clouding me from seeing my true eating habits. Over the past year, while I haven’t gained anything significant, I haven’t lost either. “I eat SO healthy,” I would say to myself and blame my lack of progress on my thyroid problem…

While I do have a thyroid issue (minor) I am on medicine that should be regulating it. So there is no excuse. What this week forced me to realize is slowly but surely those extra bites here and there became daily habits. Without thinking I would grab a few Hershey Kisses here, a sprinkle of dried cranberries on my salad there, a Trader Joes Dark Chocolate 100 calorie bar (amazing) while watching TV at night, even though I truly wasn’t hungry. And adding things like that every day adds up to an extra few hundred calories at LEAST. While it may not be enough to make me gain a significant amount, it sure was enough to keep me from losing.

This week made me stop and reevaluate my habits, and to once again see how content I can be on clean, whole foods. And while I refuse to give up chocolate forever (the very thought makes me shudder) I think it’s an important lesson we all can learn. Take note this week yourselves; pay closer attention to what you are eating. How often do you just pop something in your mouth without thinking and totally forgot you even did it? How often do you grab a few munchies while watching TV at night, even though you JUST ate dinner? How many of you reach for a snack, convincing yourself that you’re hungry as an excuse to get up from your desk so you don’t have to deal with that 15 page paper? How many of you formed those once in a while extra treats into daily habits?

Trust me, if you pay attention, you will quickly see what areas need fixing. For me, it forced me to not only realize that I was doing it, but to sit down and think about the reasons WHY.

Next week will bring the Protein stretch and the Smooth modules where I will have some more freedom with food. Should be interesting to see how that one goes…

I have to say, this detoxing is getting in the way of my social life. Instead of watching a movie with my friends I am actually pushing for basketball games. I am even up on the Danica Patrick drama. Who is this girl?

I am up on the news, I am up on sports, I am listening to classical music, I even seriously contemplated cooking for myself. Really, who is this girl I’ve become?

Today I was busy, a little too busy to really spend much time contemplating this whole thing. Is that how some people seem to be so content with their lives when there is no romance or even the prospect of romance? They’re so busy it just doesn’t cross their minds?

I mean, even the busy professionals of Sex in The City had time for love; if there is a conscious effort made to avoid love can you just forget about it? Does it just disappear into the ether of you mind? What would it be like to go through a day completely separated from any thoughts of love, dating, or that awesome first kiss?

I know that I can’t. I think it must be encrusted on my DNA somewhere, like a mutation. It is day five and I am still a boycrazy, lovecrazy, love fool.

I would have NEVER ever known what a “MOCKtail” was had it not been for this seven day detox I’m currently on. In fact, I would have never known what it was like to come back to my bed after a night out downtown and still be sober and without a jar of peanut butter in my hand had it not been for this. I did a few things tonight that I haven’t done in since my Christian straight edge high school days and I can’t lie…I feel moderately good about myself.

1. I took the TRAIN home tonight. I can’t remember the last time I took the train home while it was dark. And this has nothing at all to do with safety. I’m just usually drunk when it’s dark and therefore, spending $20 on a cab makes a whole lotta sense. I took the train, I didn’t get lost, and I read my book and listened to Sleater-Kinney on my sober journey back to Astoria.

2. I went downtown and didn’t have a single sip of alcohol. I met up with a group of the writers here at CollegeCandy and I have to admit; the girls were supportive of my war with will power. Instead of binging on my usual wine spritzer (or whatever else a charming bartender graces my tongue with); I binged on fondue. Cheesy, delicious, non-alcoholic fondue. I ate just the right amount and when the thought of grabbing a slice of pizza occurred to me after I left the bar; I had the ability, for once, to think through the decision. Being sober, I could intelligently ascertain that I was, in fact, full, and didn’t need the calories or spent money under my belt.

3. I tried this concoction known as a “mocktail” at the bar. And it was f*&king delicious. Next Thursday, when I can drink again, I plan on getting this drink again. But with vodka.

4. I spent only $20 tonight-TOTAL. Juxtapose this, my dear friends, against my normal $60-80 night out downtown (and that’s just an average).

5. I took ALLLL of my make up off and brushed my teeth before coming to bed to write this. I can’t remember the last time that I was drunk and remembered to do either one of those things.

I’m laying in my bed. My candles are lit. My face and teeth are clean. And FOR ONCE, I’m not busy embarrassing myself in some totally unnecessary AIM conversation with some guy with a girlfriend. Or an ex. Or…well, you get the picture.

I wonder what day 3 will bring…

Whatever you do, do not not NOT go out to a Mexican restaurant if you decide to do The Detox Diet.Toward the end of my mostly uneventful week 2, I met with a friend for dinner and went with every intention of eating plain chicken and lots of vegetables. But as someone who hates lettuce (really, it can’t possibly be food), I was tempted by grilled chicken with pineapple salsa.

The menu didn’t tell me that the meal would come with rice, beans, and vegetables and enough of it to serve three people, but it’s also my fault for not asking what exactly my meal would be comprised of.

Also, I was totally weak so when my friend ordered guacamole, I had to try some, especially she after insisted that it was the best in New York City. And I can’t say that I’ve sampled Mexican across Manhattan, but it was really damn good.

But not nearly good enough to deal with what followed.

Halfway through dinner, my nose got stuffy. Then it started to run so badly that I had to run to the ladies room. By the time that I got home, my stomach was so twisted with pain that I thought it would explode.

Within 24 hours, my skin went from surprisingly nice to – just plain bad.

The lesson here: when you have eliminated so much, your digestive system needs to be treated with care. There is a reason why after two weeks you need to slowly reintroduce the foods that you’ve eliminated.

When you’re eating a steady diet that includes the seven most common allergens, you wouldn’t easily attribute anything like a breakout or a stuffy nose to your body reacting to food. After eliminating, you notice food sensitivities quickly – in my case, almost instantly.

Another thing is that my stomach couldn’t handle the fat of the guacamole. I’ve been eating olive oil with some of my meals, but that much fat sat like a brick.

It was overall just a bad scene. I hope that if you decide to do this diet, you will keep my Mexican dinner debacle in mind.

Reintroducing corn and dairy in week three was also not such a good scene. Week three marked the return of the stomach bloat. I’m not allergic to corn, sugar or dairy, but after reincorporating each back into my diet for two days, I saw the return of the bloat. Previous allergy testing has revealed a soy and wheat allergy, so I will continue to stay away from them. This week I will reintroduce nuts and eggs, though I don’t anticipate the same stomach issues I had with the corn, sugar and dairy.

The pros of this diet: It forces you to drink only water and stay away from sugar, chemical sweetners and caffeine. Your diet is clean; entirely based on fruit, vegetables and the leanest of protein. I’m a night eater and I was forced to eat more during the day, less at night and I needed to work on that.

The cons: I added food simply because on its own, the diet is very low calorie. I still lost weight and felt great by adding more fruit or vegetables when needed, but in general you never want to dip below 1200 calories a day. Anyone can lose weight on an 800 calorie per day diet, but honestly why would you want to?

Not only will your body go into starvation mode and hold on to the weight that you want to lose, when you transition into a more ‘normal’ diet (maybe with some changes based upon what your body needs and tolerates), you risk gaining weight simply because you’re eating a more appropriate amount of calories.

I recommend trying this plan if you’re concerned about the quality of your diet and you’re inclined to make changes or if you’re concerned about toxicity. The Detox Diet was not written for people looking for a quick weight loss fix; it was written for people who are looking to heal themselves and get healthier by using varying levels of detoxifying foods.

Your liver processes toxins, like the chemicals and additives in foods; not just diet foods that contain aspartame, but the hormones in milk and in meat, the pesticides on fruit and vegetables and alcohol. They slow down your lymphatic system and contribute to weight gain and sluggishness. If you’re considering making the change to organic foods, detoxing may be a great way to start.

Now that it’s nearly over, I can admit that I was bored on this diet; so bored that the next plan will be all about more food, more protein and working out.

I never want to see slow cooked oats again!

“Oh my God, I miss coffee. I will commit a misdemeanor for diet Pepsi. Dammit, I want an effing cookie. Sugaaaaar. Asouiryth494p…!”

First, I will confess my diet sin: I had a shot on Saturday night. It’s hard being the sober girl at the bar. Sorry, Detox Doc Haas, it’s against my religion to turn down a free drink from a cute bartender.

In my first week sans sugar, nuts, dairy, soy, wheat, eggs and corn, I decided that staying strictly on the diet meal by meal is impossible for anyone who stays up late into the night, has a fast metabolism, enjoys working out or some combination thereof. Since I fall into all three categories, I have modified my eating plan.

I eat 4 ounces of protein at lunch with my veggies and up to 6 ounces at dinner. My cut off time for eating is 8 p.m. instead of 6 p.m. and I eat a piece of fruit as a snack. I also eat an extra piece of fruit in the morning after my oats.

Speaking of oats: if you decide to eat oatmeal when you follow this plan, don’t microwave those bad boys. Don’t. It has the consistency of wall paper paste. That mistake on the morning of day two made me think too fondly of my ‘coffee is a meal’ days.

What I hate about this diet so far: Clearly, the hunger. If you need to, then I absolutely suggest that you ‘cheat’ in the way that I have.

The lack of protein (or at least what I’m used to) is getting to me and I’ve scaled back on my weight training since I can’t have as much protein as I’m used to eating, especially in my recovery meals. I must admit that I’m surprised that I haven’t felt weak.

What I love about this diet so far: My skin looks fantastic. It’s generally not bad, but I can’t believe how much better it looks. I attribute part of that to my increased water intake, but I believe that it has to do in part with the foods I’m eating (or not eating).

Another bonus: my stomach is as flat as the end of the day as it is when I wake up and as someone who suffers from stomache aches and the like pretty often, it’s nice to be completely pain and bloat free.

What I’ve learned: Drinking water has made a tremendous difference in my energy and hunger levels. Coffee and diet soda accounted for most of my water intake, which is pathetic considering how dehydrating both can be.

The Detox Diet has taught me that allergies and intolerances don’t just come out in hives. Believe it or not, acne can be the result of your body reacting to a food that it doesn’t want you to consume. And sometimes, bloating and the stomach/digestive issues are either sign of a food intolerance or, if they are more severe, an allergy. Though only 1 -3% of adults have actual food allergies, intolerances are far more prevelant but not as easily recognized.

Just as an FYI, the first three days of this suck. They SUUUUCK. But once you get through the first stage, it becomes very easy and that blinding headache and the irritability disappear.

I’m looking forward to finishing the second week so that I can start the reintroduction process and really figure what foods my body would prefer that I eliminate or eat sparingly.

In case your’re wondering, I have probably lost a couple of pounds but I don’t weigh myself more than once every couple of months. Why start now?

Until next week, when I start the transition process. Because of course once you’re done, you don’t just jump back into your old food habits!

Excitement, I know.
