Gossip Cheat Sheet: Hollywood Takes a Breather

All’s quiet on the Hollywood front (most likely because Lindsay is rockin’ the orange jumpsuit). This week has been surprisingly dull with the exception of Blake Lively’s boobs at Comic-Con. Although without the Twilight trio and Daniel Radcliffe, even that nerd-fest was a bummer.

Snoooooze.

Worth a Venti Unsweetened Iced Coffee

1. Wyclef for President? Of Haiti that is. The star has been contributing to the Haiti relief effort since that massive earthquake hit back in January, and he has submitted paperwork to enter the upcoming election. The Haiti native is supposed to be making a formal announcement soon. It’s nice to see celebs doing good!

2. Diablo Cody is a momma! The screenwriter had a son named Marcello this week. You may know Diablo for Juno and Jennifer’s Body (two great movies…watch them now). Diablo’s married to Chelsea Lately staffer Dan Maurio. You can also catch her on her new internet series “Red Band Trailer” where she interviews celebs like sexy Adam Brody!

3. In other pregnancy news, Christina Applegate also has a bun in the oven! This is great news for the actress as she just recently beat breast cancer. She showed off her new baby bump at the premiere of Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore and looked fab!

4. Linda Hogan is engaged to her son 21-year-old bf, Charlie Hill. Charlie is only a year younger than her daughter, Brooke, and went to high school with her! Awk.ward. They are getting married some time next summer. If the two are happy, more power to them, but for some reason this seems like a publicity stunt since the Hogans haven’t gotten press since their disaster of a reality show went off the air.

4. Casey Affleck is filing an extortion lawsuit against Amanda White who accused him of sexual harassment while he was filming Joaquin Phoenix’s documentary, I’m Still Here: The Lost Year of Joaquin Phoenix. Affleck’s legal team is claiming that White accused him of sexual harassment because she wanted more money from the film. While I don’t understand the whole Joaquin Phoenix-becoming-rapper-publicity-stunt, I do hope this mess gets sorted out soon.

5. Cheryl Tweedy (Cole) and boyfriend Derek Hough are reportedly moving in together. That was fast! Cheryl just recently split from her ex-husband and was diagnosed with malaria early this month. Reports say that Cheryl asked Derek to move in with her, but he’s also looking for his own place in London as well. Slow down, honey; we don’t want you going through anymore heartbreak.

Drink some warm milk and go to bed.

1. Rihanna is set to star (yes, act) in Battleship with Alexander Skarsgard and Taylor Kitsch. I’m sorry, but last time I checked, she was a pop star. I should be cast instead!

2. Rachel Bilson is coming back to How I Met Your Mother!! She’ll be returning as Cindy, Ted’s love interest. How exciting! The only thing that can make me happier is for her and Hayden Christensen to get back together.

3. Edi Gathegi, better known as Laurent from Twilight, will be mutated in X-Men: First Class. He’ll play Darwin, who has the ability to evolve and adapt into any environment. Cool!

4. Isaiah Mustafa (the sexy Old Spice guy) is going to be on Chuck (eek!) and will be in a movie with Jennifer Aniston (EEK!). The movie stars Jen and Jason Batemen, and Isaiah will be playing a cop. Hopefully a shirtless cop. SO EXCITED!

5. You can’t deny it, Russel Brand is hot. (Editor’s Note: I’ll deny that till the day I die.)

I Love Your Style: Diablo Cody

Who or what inspires your style? Many of us use musicians (like Debbie Harry) or movie characters (like Annie Hall) as style inspiration, even though, most of the time, they are being dressed from head to toe by the best stylists. Which we don’t have. And sometimes it’s damn near impossible to work their Hollywood looks into our not-so-Hollywood lives. I’ve made it my mission to tap into the mind of a fashion stylist and show you how to take your style inspiration – whatever it may be – and make it more you!

Diablo Cody is one cool lady. Not just because she has a wicked awesome tattoo on her arm of a pinup girl, the fact that she won an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay for Juno, her previous profession of being a talented “clothing-remover,” or the fact that her name means “devil” in Spanish. All of those help make her pretty neat, but there’s just something about her, something I can’t quite put my finger on, that oozes awesome.

And she wraps it all up perfectly in her uniquely fabulous look.

Diablo is pretty under the radar when it comes to her style, but I fell in love with it the first time I saw her being interviewed for Juno. It’s unlike anything I’ve ever seen before; the innocent ’50s housewife meets the rock-and-roll dominatrix. She’s got the whole pin-up vibe going on, but still manages to look totally modern. It’s romantic yet somehow dark and edgy. Think animal prints and spikes meet polka dots and ruffles, then get married and live happily ever after.

It shouldn’t work, but it does.

I love Diablo’s mixing and matching and she’s inspired me to add a little of that to my own wardrobe. I may not have her tat or her Oscar, but with this outfit, at least I can have a bit of her style.

Dress, Shoes, Lipstick, Sunglasses, Earrings

The red-patterned dress is perfect for incorporating Diablo’s style. Not only is the pattern so her, but the design is a tangible representation of who she is as a fashionista. From the front it’s a classy sheath dress, but when you turn around – BAM! – not what you expected, eh?

Now, any normal girl would pair this dress with a basic pair of black pumps and call it a day, but it’s all about the edgy accessories in Diablo’s world. I love the studs and buckles on this shoe and I love even more that you can wear it with so many different options, from this dress to a simple pair of jeans and a leather jacket. Throw on some animal print sunglasses for a little unexpected pop of fun, the badass-yet-still-totally-girly earrings for some extra grunge and, of course, Diablo’s signature red lipstick for the sex appeal.

In the end you’ve got the perfect blend of girly and hardcore, innocence and sex. A look that, like Diablo Cody, just embodies cool.

I Hate Diablo Cody, or, My Struggles with NPD

Let me just start out by saying that I didn’t care for the movie Juno. It got progressively better towards the end, yes, but for much of the movie, the writing was absolutely appalling. After the exchange with the convenience store clerk at the beginning of the film, I had to get an usher to help me find my eyes because they had rolled clear out of my head. Juno is hip, Diablo, I get it, please stop beating me over the head with those million dollar shoes you didn’t end up wearing.

That being said, her writing isn’t why I dislike Diablo Cody as a whole. It’s also not her vomitously rebel-cutsie name, although it does make me cringe a little bit every time I hear it. Like when it was announced at the Oscars. For winning best screenplay.

Admittedly, my dislike is partially rooted in that Cody reminds of the girl who is always at the coffee shop, reading Kurt Vonnegut and making me feel intensely uncool. “That girl” also has all these esoteric tattoos and an inexplicable haircut that I would never grow the balls to attempt. Cody seems a little more approachable than “that girl”, however, which is a point in her favor.

Mostly, I don’t like Diablo Cody because (a big) part of me wishes I was Diablo Cody. I call it the Natalie Portman Disease, or NPD. I first acquired NPD when I first watched Portman in The Professional.

I too was a struggling actress (VERY struggling; I couldn’t even get cast in the school plays) and to see someone so beautiful do exactly what I wanted to do really pissed me off and I’ve hated Natalie Portman ever since. She went on to international stardom as a lovely, talented artist and I decided to give up my dream of being an actress and decide to be a writer.

Little would I know that 7 or 8 years later, Diablo Cody would arrive on the scene and bring with her an intense relapse of my NPD. I sit at my desk, writing my little stories, dreaming of one day creating akick ass screenplay that everyone would love and that bitch Diablo beats me to it, with her quirky, strangely sexy style and her former stripper schtick. She’s even got a clever little column in Entertainment Weekly (that is lightyears better than her screenplay for Juno, IMHO. But what do I know? I don’t have an Oscar), a magazine I’ve been reading and loving since I was a teenager.

But Jessica, you say, don’t you think you are being a little childish? As a fellow woman writer, shouldn’t you be congratulating Cody on her success rather than begrudging her it?

Well, yes, I should. Touche. You are absolutely right. And I have no way to apologize or explain myself other than saying its not me, it’s my NPD.

Also, Natalie Portman’s British accent sucks. So there.

Jewno: Funnier Than The Original?

You know what’s funny? When people make fun of over-hyped things. You know what else is funny? When people satirize their own religion. And since I’m not Jewish (but should be, considering how many Jewish people I chill with on a regular basis), I’ll refrain from saying anything except that I find this clip hilarious.



Article Misses the Point of ‘Juno’

Recently USA Today ran an article questioning Juno’s portrayal of teen pregnancy.  It seems that some people worry the movie glorified the whole thing.
Maybe it’s just me, but I think they missed the point of Juno.  One of the quotes in the article suggests that teens won’t see that Juno faced any consequences, because the baby was “handed off.”  Juno ended up with her boyfriend and was able, presumably, to go on with life as usual.
Sorry, but I think that’s BS.  First of all — and I don’t know how many times we have to stress this before the right-wingers get it — pregnancy is NOT about punishment.  Yes, the movie ended happily, but it wasn’t because Juno didn’t face any consequences.  It was because she made a big, and really tough, decision.  I don’t think that even a self-involved teen is going to miss that.
Furthermore, let’s not forget the outcome of that decision: By giving her baby up for adoption, Juno made another woman’s dreams come true.  Honestly, you’d think the conservatives would be happy about a movie that promotes adoption as an alternative to abortion!
Okay, so Juno doesn’t portray teen pregnancy as one of Dante’s nine circles of hell.  So what?  To be perfectly honest, I think it portrays it realistically.  Choosing between abortion, adoption, and keeping the child is a difficult decision, no matter how self-involved the teen is.  And contrary to what many adults would apparently like teens to believe, getting pregnant does not mean the end of the world.  Girls survive teen pregnancy every day — maybe a little worse for wear (like Juno), but they get through it.
I know what Juno opponents are afraid of.  They think that if they praise Juno’s decision-making abilities after she becomes pregnant, then teens will interpret that to mean that getting pregnant is okay.  Personally, I think Juno’s struggles speak for themselves — the viewer knows that even if everything turns out all right, it was a difficult road that got her to that point.

         


OMG DIABLO CODY USED TO STRIP: And Other Totally Newsworthy News

Heads up, everyone: it’s cool to like Diablo Cody again.
Diablo has, of late, been suffering from Hipster Appreciation Syndrome, the phenomenon whereby pretentious idiots with great hair systematically value or devalue everything in proportion to its popularity.
For those unfamiliar with the process, it goes as follows:
1. Cool people like something.
2. So uncool people like the same thing.
3. So cool people hate that thing.
4. So uncool people hate the same thing.
5. So cool people like it again.
This is the reason why you will occasionally stumble into a crowd of hard-ass punks discussing, with great enthusiasm, the musical genius of Rod Stewart. Rod Stewart is like the hipster holy land. Ain’t no-one going to get behind that cover of “Downtown Train” unless they’ve been thoroughly indoctrinated.
Anyway, in Diablo Cody’s case, the process began with a whole lot of people liking her movie “Juno,” peaked with an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay, twisted into a slew of anti-Diablo blog posts and parodies, and peaked once more with a sketch on Saturday Night Live, in which Ellen Page (who is still sort of hip for now) must renounce Cody, in the form of a dragged-up Andy Samberg who only speaks in puns.
I may be ahead of the curve in terms of predicting renewed Cody appreciation. But, really, is there anything less cool than Saturday Night Live? If hating her is already this popular, then taking a pro-DC stance will probably be provocative and stylish by next Friday.
The most interesting thing about the Diablo Cody backlash is the undercurrent of misogyny that it’s exposed in the cool crowd. Every single parody, blog post or article mentions that she used to strip, with the underlying implication that no serious writer or artist could ever be involved in the sex industry (Sucks to be you, Jean Genet! Be gone with you, Kathleen Hanna!).
This would be a lot more damaging had Cody not openly blogged about her former profession, then written a memoir about it. The same goes for those allegedly scandalous topless pictures. “It’s not everyday you see an Oscar-winning screenwriter naked, which is probably a good thing” quipped Egotastic, which is funny because – tee hee! – women don’t win awards for writing very often.
But as it turns out, these dirty secret career-destroying pictures came from Cody’s very own blog. Again, boys, the key to shaming a woman is to focus on something she’s actually ashamed of. If she doesn’t buy into your guilt trip, it’s not going to work.
I expect this kind of anti-girl, anti-sex, slut-bashing attitude from 40-year-old investment bankers and soccer moms. When it comes from allegedly forward-thinking, indie-rock-listening, Obama-voting young folks, I’m – well, “surprised” isn’t quite the word. I just experience a familiar dull thud of disappointment, the sort of thing I always feel when I realize that “counterculture” doesn’t really “counter” all that much, and that you can’t escape the messed-up-ness of the world by changing your hairstyle and buying some new records.
The most intelligent critiques of Diablo Cody tend to focus on her stylized dialogue. I admit that the barrage of zingers in the first act of “Juno” does wear thin. But, again, she’s being criticized for a trait that often garners male screenwriters admiration. Unless I missed something, “Being John Malkovich,” “Rushmore,” and “Pulp Fiction” were not masterpieces of cinematic realism, and the characters therein didn’t speak like anyone I’ve ever met. I can’t for the life of me understand why “Juno” is not afforded at least the same respect that people give to Napoleon goddamn Dynamite. Neither deserves an Oscar, but if I had to choose between the two, “Juno” is the movie I’d prefer to watch a second time.
So, yes: I’m bringing Cody back. Feel free to disagree with me. In fact, feel free to like what you like, period, without worrying about who else might like it and how many of them there might be.
Because, to be honest, I’m tired of listening to your Rod Stewart albums.

         


Oscar Fashion: Not a total Nightmare. Bummer.

As my friends and I gathered in my living room with drinks and dinner last night to watch the Oscars, we all recognized a very obvious fact:  We were not gathered to actually watch the awards.  In fact, none of us cared that much about who won anything.  (especially not at the tipsy end of the evening).  The truth is that we just wanted to see what everyone was wearing.  We wanted to either rip them apart or drop our jaws in jealousy.  And so that’s what happened.
There weren’t as many atrocities as I had secretly hoped for last night.  I always kind of want Cameron Diaz to show up in a trash bag and slippers.  But hey, lets face, she’d look like a babe even in that.  I guess what I’m trying to say is that no one gave me nightmares last night.

However, Jennifer Garner takes home the “We wanna be that bitch” trophy from me and my friends.  Our jaws dropped in jealousy.  We wanted her dress. Her hair.  Her necklace.  Her…ugh.  We simply have never ever seen her look as good as she did last night…which was…FLAWLESS.

 Marion Cotillard may have looked like she was wearing a quilt that her grandmother made…(except really it was Jean Paul Gaultier who made it)…nonetheless, she looked sexy in that quilt.  Sexy AND unique.  It was a great combination.

Amy Adams may have looked good, but she pissed me off.  She ornamented her finger tips with a totally pointless bag.  Yes, it was a pretty bag.  However, admitting that your little princess purse has NOTHING IN IT (which, yes, she did do) is about as noble as admitting you stuffed your bra to me.  As my roommate put it; “It’s a pretty purse.  But it belonged in a museum…not on her arm–empty.”

 Anne Hathaway, on the other hand, didn’t PISS me off, per se…instead, she just made me sad.  It’s wrong of me to associate her automatically with her character in The Devil Wears Prada, but I cannnn’t helllllllpppp itttttt.  I thought she was that down ass chick who looked hot and didn’t care about being paper thin.  Last night, however, she was sickly skinny looking (and I’m not saying this because she is pale…I’m saying it because I think she lost too much weight).  She just looked like a scared little girl who had just gotten her first detention.

All in all, my friends and I knitpicked all night long at dresses that were more or less OKAY.  The only question I really have is:  Who told Miley Cyrus to drop her goth rocker look?  I was really digging it…
