We saw it with Prince William and Kate Middleton, Britney Spears and Jason Trawick, Anne Hathaway and Adam Shulman…now Drew Barrymore is jumping on the bandwagon and getting engaged to her non-famous boyfriend, Will Kopelman. The two reportedly got together right after Drew split with nerdy-cute BF Justin Long and have been dating for the past year. It all begs the question — could normal be the new normal?

While the future Mr. Drew Barrymore isn’t entirely common — he’s the son of the former head of Chanel, after all — his job as an art consultant puts him far from A-List celeb status. Looking at the couple kissing on vacation, hanging out in LA and just generally enjoying each other’s company, it all looks so…normal. Drew’s been married twice before, so I do wonder if she’d take the plunge a third time unless she was really, really sure this relationship is going to work out for the long haul. Perhaps the secret to successful relationships in Hollywood is to find someone who isn’t in the spotlight along with you.

These overpaid celebs probably take their millions and throw it down at Fred Segal the second they get their paychecks, whereas I save for months to buy a mediocre dress from Express.

It has been six days since my boyfriend and I broke up. So obviously the best thing to do was watch a romantic “comedy” (I’ll explain the quotation marks in a minute). What I didn’t realize is that even a movie about falling in love could explain so much about an ended relationship.

Going the Distance is essentially Knocked Up minus the baby and the funny. Oh, and plus about 3,000 miles. Erin (Drew Barrymore) is a reporter on an internship who meets Garrett (Justin Long) six weeks before she has to return to her hometown of San Francisco. Garrett works for a record label where he is unable to give the bands he loves any big breaks. I know, a news office and a record label – now there are two places that we don’t see enough of in films today. Neither Erin nor Garrett really like the way their life is going and they make each other laugh, so naturally, they fall in love and commit to be long distance.

The mastermind behind this film clearly thought that because Drew Barrymore, Justin Long, Charlie Day, Jason Sudeikis, and Christina Applegate are funny in other movies and TV shows, they would be able to somehow make the dialogue infinitely more hysterical than it actually was on paper. When they realized that wasn’t working, I guess they just decided that Judd Apatow is pretty popular, so why not have three goofy looking friends talk about masturbation while two blonde sisters (the older, anal-retentive one with a crazy family that she can’t handle and the younger one falling in love) talk about how stupid men are.

The sad part is, the characters have that true, realistic wit that your own friends might have. I also surround myself with people who are quick with their comebacks and pop culture references. Unfortunately, the film doesn’t want to make it about your friends. It wants to be something that it never could be – a popular, raunchy comedy that makes a billion dollars. If director Nanette Burstein had told the cast to go “real,” especially in the scenes where Garrett and his boys are hanging out, then Going the Distance could have been a relatable story. Instead, Long, Day, and Sudeikis ham for the camera and overdo the obvious jokes, but undersell the truly witty lines.

Looking beyond the clear problems with creativity and humor, Going the Distance has an interesting underlying theme to it. Consider the title, “Going the Distance.” Throughout the film, Erin and Garrett meet, commit to a long distance relationship, fall in love, fight, miss each other, fight some more, and then miss each other some more. The film also makes it very clear that both Erin and Garrett could have chosen a simpler life, because they both have people at their workplace who are obviously interested in them (another example of the lack of creativity…).

So, the film asks in its own way, are Erin and Garrett making the right choice? Do they love each other enough that it is worth it to “go the distance” for each other? This distance isn’t just in a physical sense; it is completely emotional. Both have clearly committed to put themselves through the emotional turmoil of missing each other, jealousy, and loneliness. This connects so well to every relationship, because even if there isn’t physical distance, there are always differences; everyone eventually has to decide whether or not it’s worth it to fight for each other and accept the inevitable problems.

I hope that you can understand my own personal epiphany without me having to explain it, but let me just say that I have been so much happier since the break up, and after reading a little too deeply into what was supposed to be a distraction from my life, I think I’m starting to better understand why it feels like a weight has been lifted.

I am so sick and tired of hearing about Jesse James trying to apologize and make up excuses for why he decided to cheat on Sandra Bullock, America’s favorite sweetheart. It’s bad enough that he cheated on Sandy with multiple women, but the fact that he’s going to the media (i.e People Magazine, Nightline) and explaining what prompted him to cheat (apparently his Dad was abusive to him as a child) just proves that he needs to grow a pair and be held solely responsible for his actions.

During his Nightline interview, James explained that one of the main reasons he cheated on Sandy was because as a child, his father was emotionally and physically abusive to him, going as far as breaking his arm and beating him. Although I do think abuse is an extremely touchy subject and it would be stupid to make up stories about abuse, I don’t even know what to believe anymore. Here, the fault lies in not only James but also Nightline. By granting him an interview and allowing him to share his side of the story, the public is encouraged to sympathize with him and maybe even give him a free pass for his infidelities. It’s a win-win situation for both sides: Nightline gets the viewership and publicity of the interview and James gets more coverage and money in return.

Abuse or not, what people need to understand is that Jesse James initially made a vow to Sandra Bullock during their marriage and he was the one who chose to sleep with Bombshell McGee (the tattooed up adultress who, in desire for her 15 minutes of fame, blabbed her big mouth to the world). At the end of the day, by excusing his “transgressions” (ha!) to his father’s abuse, James is the coward copping out and not stepping up to his own responsibilities.

The same can be said for Lindsay Lohan, the actress we all love to hate. Lohan, who once used to be one of Hollywood’s most sought out actresses, is now a hot tranny mess who is shamefully wearing her SCRAM ankle bracelet. Many people blame her parents for her derailment, but honestly, she’s the one snorting all the coke and downing Vodka like it’s water. Lohan should really be taking advice from Drew Barrymore, who, after her stints in rehab and failed marriages, is now Hollywood’s Golden Girl.

Sucky parents or not, celebrities in the likes of James and Lohan need to realize that for all that they’re given in the world – a life of fame, luxury and money – they need to step up and seriously take some personal responsbilities to their action. I absolutely do not feel sorry for James and hope that he locks him and his junk away from the rest of the world and becomes eternally miserable for cheating on Miss Congeniality.

Suck it Jesse.

Is it just me or is there another “revolutionary” new makeup product introduced every freaking day?! Just walking into Ulta or Sephora (or even Walgreens!) sends many chicas into fits of hysteria, reaching for the nearest brown bag to regulate their breathing. It’s all so overwhelming.

So how can you know which product – among the sea of thousands – is the best? Which does what you need it to do? Which ones are worth the extra money?

Let me help. I don’t know every beauty product out there, but I’ve tested a lot of them and I’ll let you know which are worth the money (like Dior’s Skinflash Primer) and which are not.

What it is: Covergirl Lashblast Volume

Why this should be in your bag: Cuz Drew Barrymore says so in the commercial.  Okay really though, while this is what initially enticed me to buy it (who doesn’t trust Drew?), homegirl was right.  This mascara is under $10 (awesome), it’s waterproof (fantastic), and the brush is packed with tiny bristles to make sure that every lash is covered (hollaaa!).  Drew called it the most successful mascara launched in recent years, and it’s easy to see why.  It covers completely with great color and volume (I tested the very black option).

How to use it: Curl your lashes with a curler, holding down for several seconds.  Start at the base and wigggle the brush back and forth until you reach the end of the lashes.  I like to use the curler again before applying a second coat.  Then, pointing the wand at your eye, swipe back and forth lightly on your bottom lashes.

Could my money be better spent on a cheeseburger? Nope. This mascara is great and so reasonably priced! Plus, it won’t clog your arteries. I’d definitely pass up a dinner on the town for this stuff; you won’t regret it.

Ever since her role in Juno, I’ve had an unhealthy crush on Ellen Page.

While she’s not as mainstream as our past girl crushes, this doesn’t make her any less deserving of the title.  In fact, it makes me love her more. My fellow Canuck obviously has talent – she was, after all, nominated for an Oscar.  She may not have won, but she was the fourth youngest actress to be nominated for the role, and that in itself is pretty darn impressive.

And the movie was awesome. I don’t know one person who can say they saw Juno and didn’t fall instantly in love with it. Ellen played the main character perfectly and even showcased her vocal skills on the soundtrack, which is as good (if not better) than the movie. Sure, the movie sparked controversy – being all pro-teen pregnancy and all – but that’s not Ellen’s fault. Maybe people should teach their kids about sex before they let them watch movies like this. Or watch Bristol Palin on TV.

But I digress. Back to my love, Ellen Page.

Surprisingly, this isn’t the first or only movie Ellen has been in.  She totally kicked ass AND saved the day in X-Men: The Last Stand before she took on her dad’s new girlfriend while acing her SATs in Smart People.  She’s also been in Hard Candy, The Tracey Fragments, and An American Crime. Her next project is Whip-It, which is directed by Drew Barrymore. Two power girls on one project? Sounds like a winner to me.

While she may be an amazing actress, there are many other reasons why I love Ellen Page.  A self-proclaimed tomboy, Ellen usually plays it safe with basic-black on the red carpet. She’s not fashion forward, but that’s even more crush-worthy. If you’re forced to dress up when you’d rather be wearing a pair of Connies, why try and be a fashionista? She knows her style and she does it right.

Oh and did-you-know (say it fast 10x) she is hilarious? Ok, I guess everyone knows that. I mean, she was Juno. But she’s funny in real life too. And she makes it look so easy. Ellen’s just the kind of cool girl that you’d wanna kick back and have a beer (or 3) with. And I’m totally crushing.

Ellen, if you’re out there, call me! I’ll bring the guitar.
