Going to college in DC, it seems like everyone knows everything about politics. I’ve never seen so many people know so much about the American (and international, for that matter) political system. Tomorrow night, January 24, Obama will be presenting this year’s State of the Union. This is extremely exciting because, besides the fact that I live in DC, I’m in one of the largest, rowdiest, most belligerent freshman dorms in the country. Now, combine DC’s major political events and my dorm and you have The State of the Union Drinking Game!

Listen, I know most college-aged girls know more about celebrity gossip than politics but hopefully this game will get you all a little more interested in The State of the Union. Here it goes:

Rules of The State of the Union Drinking Game:

1. If Barack Obama says “let me be clear,” take a sip.

2. If the President mentions the Occupy Movement, yell “f*ck the man!” and take a sip.

3. If Obama mentions our boys in the Middle East, the last person to jump up, salute and yell “God bless our troops!” takes a shot.

4. If the President mentions his wife, Michelle, pretend to make out with yourself then take a sip.

5. If the word “debt” is used, take a sip of your friend’s drink and promise to give it back.

6. If Obama uses the word “jobs,” toast to grad school and take a sip.

7. Anytime you see Michelle Obama’s “guns,” flex your biceps and take a sip.

“The Princess”

Relax and rejoice if a Princess appears in your lineup. This lady lacks game knowledge and proper pong skills. She sips her beer, begs for re-dos, and bursts out laughing—nonstop. A Pong Princess’ scandalous attire flaunts her assets, which she uses as a distraction mechanism during matches. Should she make a cup, prepare yourself for a high-pitched squeal and slutty victory dance.

“The Pro”

Beware of The Pro when it comes to beer pong. These players suck the joy from the fun-spirited sport. Their by-the-book play sobers your pregame—not OK. The resolution: Drink every time The Pro throws a rule-abiding bitch fit. You’ll down your beer quicker, and be ready to hit the bars sooner. There is only one way to permanently shutdown a Pro: strip them of their title. Trust me, nothing feels better.

“The Cheapskate”

They’re the life of the party, but tighter than a pair True Religions. Like clockwork, your local Cheapskate shows up every Saturday sans-invitation, thirsty and empty-handed. He then maneuvers around your kitchen like it’s his own, helping himself to a couple of cold ones. Here’s a tip, Cheapskate: Have people over to your place for once. Or, splurge on a case of Bud Light instead of bumming beers off your bros, yet again.

“The Partial Player”

Enter, the Partial Player. This guy or gal claims to be better when blackout, and has a bullshit excuse for every air ball and bad bounce. Fonder of other drinking games like flip cup, they lose interest during drawn-out games. Despite these drawbacks, a Partial Player can be clutch. Maybe they’re really good at hitting lone cups. Or, perhaps their potty mouth is perfect for psyching out competition. Either way, their limited table talent can come in handy.

“The Trash Talker”

We all know one, or twelve. Trash Talkers turn up the testosterone level by claiming to be your university’s pong master. They brag about whom they beat and reflect on how rarely they re-racked. So what, they ran the table at last weekend’s toga party. No one cares. But a true Trash Talker doesn’t let anyone forget about a six-game winning streak. Shut them up by giving them a taste of their own medicine.

Icing: This trend got so out of hand last summer that I heard countless stories of bosses icing their interns and entire bars running out of Smirnoff Ice. This so-called girly drink can get aggressive when your roommate ices you after a long night of drinking (bad) or when you’re hungover the next morning (worse).

Vodka Whipped Cream: Whipped Lightening has created the first alcohol-infused whipped cream weighing in at 36.5 proof….as if we needed another easy and delicious way to consume alcohol. Oh, and the nutritional values are miraculously missing, no calories listed so they don’t count, right?

Liquor Pong: You’re just asking for problems.

Firefly: Spending time down South taught me the wonder that is sweet tea. Previously, I had no idea what I was missing out on. Then add some vodka? It’s like summer in a cup! Followed by a terrible hangover.

Shot Gunning: A step beyond good old-fashioned chugging, I’ve decided it’s far too easy to consume small pieces of metal if you’re not a pro cutter. That on top of one last beer you probably definitely didn’t need to consume.

Four Loko: As if alcohol weren’t enough, this company decided to add caffeine and sugar to this crazy concoction. No wonder it’s been banned in several states. Examples of side affects are, but are not limited to: embarrassing texts to your ex-boyfriend, hazy nights, ridiculous dance moves, incriminating photos and general regret.

Irish Car Bombs: Mixing three types of alcohol into one delicious milkshake like concoction and a fun chugging game. We were never even given a chance.

But in case you haven’t thrown together a simple outfit yet, or if you simply don’t feel like spending all of next week detagging and/or Photoshopping drunken photos, here are a few CC-approved options to still keep your weekend productive:

Brush up on your 2010 World Series speak. It’s the perfect conversation topic post-Halloweekend (and we don’t just mean with frat boys).

(Try to) plan your perfect class schedule. Just like every other semester, it’s worth a try.

The following is a guest post by Shep, one of our (nerdy yet totally helpful) friends at Hack College. Check ‘em out for all your techy needs. They’re like the nerdy boyfriend you never had but always needed.

Dorm rooms have always been a great place to learn games like King’s Cup and Caps, but what if I told you that you could squeeze beer pong–the Holy Grail, Superbowl, and Mt. Everest of all drinking games–into your all-too-tiny room?

Beer pong?  In a dorm room?  ”Preposterous,” you say.  How in the hell you can cram such a space-consuming game into your horse stall of a room?  Before we go on, I should point out that this is probably not a very good idea, and you stand a good chance of getting busted by your RA. But dammit, if you take your beer pong seriously and want to throw caution and ping pong balls to the wind, then by all means, read on.

Alright, the first thing you need to do is give up on the notion that you’re going to fit a regulation-sized beer pong table in a dorm room.  You’re not.  Even if you could cram a giant table or slab of wood in your room, you’d just be asking to get busted.  With that in mind, you’ll need to design your table with both size and sound suppression in mind.

Dealing with Space Constraints

As I said, a full-sized beer pong table is just too long to fit in your dorm room.  When you really think about it though, beer pong tables waste a lot of space.  The cups are lined up on either end, but the middle 75% of the table is used for little more than sharpie signatures and the odd bounce shot.  Your dorm room table should be as short as possible, eliminating the wasted space.  If you did it right, the cups on either side of the table should be less than two feet apart.

This stub of a table might not look very appealing, but you can compensate for the shorter length by establishing throwing lines a few feet behind it on either side.  With this arrangement, you’ll be throwing balls the same distance as you would on the typical frat house table, with none of the wasted space.  Of course, this essentially kills the bounce shot, but who’s really going to miss that?

Suppressing Noise

Nothing attracts the attention of a roaming RA faster than the pwack pwack pwack of bouncing ping pong balls. To avoid getting busted, you’ll need to mask the stereotypical beer pong noises.  Instead of a traditional wood table (which of course takes up way too much space, anyway), you should make your table out of a skinny cardboard box set across a couple chairs.  A ping pong ball striking hollow cardboard makes a completely different noise than a ball bouncing off wood, and probably won’t make a passerby’s ears perk up.  Sure, the balls won’t bounce, but this isn’t an issue on such a short table anyway.

The beer pong purists might get up in arms about this one, but you’d be wise to avoid the traditional red Solo cups.  Tall styrofoam cups hardly make any noise compared to their bright plastic brethren, and hardly change the dynamics of the game at all.  This is absolutely worth the tradeoff.

Location is also critical.  This should go without saying, but you want the table to be as far away from the front door as possible.  If you have a suite-style room with a bathroom in the middle, try to squeeze the table in there if you can.  The more you can make the sound waves dissipate before reaching the hallway, the better.  You could even stuff a towel along the bottom of the door as a last layer of noise (and beer smell) defense.  Also, consider playing some music out of a speaker near the door to mask the beer pong sounds, just be sure it isn’t loud enough to draw a noise complaint.

It Can Be Done

Obviously this isn’t the only way to play beer pong in a dorm room, but it offers space efficiency and discretion without sacrificing much in the way of fun.  Just please don’t forget that all-in-all, this is probably a stupid idea to begin with… but it sure can be fun. If you’re confused about any of the above tips, I included a silly diagram of this setup that I drew on my iPad. (Editor’s Note: NERD.)

We might be too old to go door-to-door and ask strangers for candy… but we’re not too old to dress up as slutty versions of our favorite childhood fairy tales characters, animals, or public service workers, are we? Besides, if we’re struggling to pay $49.99 for a “Sexy Bull Fighter” costume, dammit, we want to get the most bang for our buck!

Here are a few games and party options that you can host throughout Halloween week, just to get into the spirit of things!

Liquor Treat
This game can be the most fun, but is also the most difficult to pull off, especially if you live in a dorm with a strict RA or a No-Alcohol Policy. Similar to an “Around-the-World” party, you have to rally everyone on your floor/in your apartment building to participate. The members of each room or apartment choose a theme…and a type of liquor. When guests arrive, they go door to door and can stay to mingle in any room they like. When they ring the doorbell, they are also rewarded with a shot– hence, this is the grown-up’s version of Trick or Treat.

Scary Movie Drinking Games
Take advantage of the fact that F/X, Sci-Fi, and all of the basic cable channels will be playing Friday the 13th, Nightmare on Elm Street and Halloween over and over for the whole month of October. If you are familiar with the movie, you can make up your own rules – e.g. take a shot every time the theme song plays in Halloween, or chug a beer every time you hear the “whispers” in Friday the 13th, or you can find several ready-made drinking games online to play. The good news? You’ll be so buzzed by the end that you won’t be too scared to sleep with the lights off!

Monster Mash

This is one of those counting drinking games that is so difficult to get the hang of, and so easy to get absolutely smashed by playing.

Sitting in a circle, you and your friends go around the room and count off–no small feat for college students! On numbers divisible by “3,” the player says the word “monster” instead of the number, and on numbers divisible by “5,” they say “mash” instead of the number. Whoever screws up, drinks. Once you get going, then, the game should sound something like, “1..2…monster…4….mash…monster….7…8….monster….mash.”

Boo! Zoo
Too smart to waste your night on a mere counting game? Throw in some crazy hand gestures! This is the Halloweenified version of the game “Zoo,” which you may or may not have heard of, but that needs to get into your Drinking Game vocabulary.

To play Zoo, everyone sits in a circle, again, and before you begin, go around the room and have everyone think of a word and a quick hand gesture to go along with it. For Halloween, then, a player might be “Ghost” and have a ghostlike motion, while another player is “Stab” and makes the universal signal for stabbing someone.

To begin the game, everyone must clap in a “We Will Rock You” rhythm. The starting player is predetermined, and the opening chant is as follows: “What are we playing?” “Boo Zoo!” “Why are we playing?” “Get f**ked up!”

The starting player continues the clapping, but inserts her word and gesture into it, and then inserts another players’ word and signal. Example: clap-clap-Ghost, clap-clap-Stab. Stab must be alert, and continue the clapping rhythm, following suit by shouting another players’ signal and performing their movement. The best part of this game is that whenever someone messes up, all players must partake in a group social! This one gets extremely tricky in large groups, which means more drinking for all involved!

Bobbing for Booze
I’m not going to lie, bobbing for apples was NOT my favorite fall game growing up; then again, who really wants to stick their face in some tepid water that the other kids have probably snotted and drooled in, only to come out with a freaking apple? For college purposes, why not mix things up a bit? Buy a bunch of nips from the liquor store (or have everyone bring a couple to throw into the pot), and toss them in a bin or vat of some sort that’s filled with water. Give everyone a turn to bob for nips, and then let everyone shoot their prizes! If you want to be bad, buy some nips of the nastiest liquor you can find, because you won’t be able to see what you’re bobbing for while you play.

And if you are really up for a challenge, toss the nips in a vat of jungle juice instead of water, and see where the night takes you from there!

Remember those days when you spent your evenings in grimy basements accentuating your cleavage
to throw off your beer pong opponent’s game? Oh, that was last night? Awesome. While it seemed like a total waste of time or just a more exciting way to get really, really drunk, it turns out all that dedication might pay off.

Yes, I know. I didn’t even think this “tour” existed either. But it does and two very lucky and very skilled Sacramento boys just took home the loot.

All those nights we’ve spent getting ready, going to some randos’ apartment and playing beer pong with our girlfriends is finally paying off. (And you can explain this to your parents next time they lecture you on how much you’re partying!) No longer just a college pastime, people at the World Beer Pong Tour take this “sport(?)” very seriously. So seriously, in fact, that they don’t even use beer. According to them, water (yeah, that stuff you chug in the morning when you’re feeling like hell) is better because it doesn’t throw off your game like beer does.

Obviously they’ve never seen my blackout-behind-the-back toss that made me a champion.

But that’s beside the point. It’s exciting to see everyone’s favorite backyard game getting the respect it deserves! While beer pong was once merely a way to to get tipsy and an excuse to get close to that hot Australian who sits behind you in Comm (“Hey, wanna be my partner?”), it’s now your chance to pay off those student loans.

Next stop: the summer Olympics?

Your co-workers/parents won't be nearly as impressed with this as you'd think.

Keg stands, day drinking, mardi gras beads, vegging out at home during the holidays… these are all things that happen during college. And by all accounts, they should happen, you know, before you’re catapulted into the real world where whatever you do at your local bar on a Thursday will not go over well in your cubicle on Friday.  Yeah, not only does college give you that yummy degree, it gives you the freedom to act like a college kid. It’s like your student ID is a ‘get by free’ pass, and just about anything goes.

Which is a really beautiful thing.

Unfortunately (or fortunately) for our well-being, some things belong with college and college only. Much like Vegas, what happens on campus should probably stay on campus. If you want people to continue loving you in the real world, anyway.  And with the end of college nearing for so many of us, it might be time to lay those things out. So here is a list of the 20 things that are only OK in college:

1. Eating cereal for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. And considering that a valid meal.

2. Sundays dedicated to your roommates slowly filtering in from walks of shame.

3. Coffee at 9….P.M.

4. Waking up on the bathroom floor.

5. Using abbrevs (LOL, Totz, OMG, Fo shiz) and movie quotes (You shut your mouth when you’re talking to me!) in normal day conversations.

6. Not washing your hair for 3 days to “get those natural oils back.”

7. (Hopefully) Pulling all-nighters.

8. Wearing Uggs for any and all occasions.

9. Storing mini shots of Smirnoff in your purse “just in case you need them.”

10. Using empty bottles of Smirnoff and 3 Buck Chuck as a form of home decor.

11. Having a drawer full of t-shirts dedicated to drinking events.

12. Drinking until 5AM and sleeping until 3PM. Then waking up and doing it again.

13. Calling in to work because you are hungover.

14. Calling in to work because it’s the first nice day of the season.

15. Drinking before noon. On a Tuesday.

16. Duct-taping two forties to your hands and calling it a game.

17. Dressing up like a huge slut-bag for Halloween…three days in a row.

18. Considering lightly jogging to class (because you’re late) a great work-out for the day.

19. Scheduling your obligations around episodes of Gossip Girl, Glee and The Hills.

20. Being in room full of guys….all of which you’ve hooked up with.

Every week I make a list. Not a grocery list or a to-do list…or that list, because I don’t really do groceries (there is a reason why they deliver pizza) and to-do lists are totally not my scene (if such a scene even exists) and, unfortunately, I haven’t added to that list in quite awhile.

No, this list is a top ten-style countdown about the hard-hitting issues, like which mash-ups are the best ever or which apps rock my world.

This week I’m focusing on the “click click flash” that consumes your weekend. You go out, someone inevitably breaks out the camera (every 4 minutes) and you start posing like you’re ready for the cover of Nylon. Great idea, but these pictures are going to end up on Facebook for the world to see the next day when you’re sober. Oof. And with today’s technology, you might be even caught in real time.
