Congress recently voted on the endorsement of standardized electronically readable driver’s licenses but will this proposal make way for what will amount to a National Identification Card? The idea of a tracking device is terrifying. Though our civil liberties have been systemically eroding since 1913 it seems that America has reached an all new low. The vote was divided among both parties and The US House of Representatives approved a Republican-backed measure that would require all US states to design the licenses by December 2009 complying with federal regulation for antiterrorism. Don’t want a card that allows the government to track you 24/7? Best of luck getting into federal building much less on a plane or across a border.

Technology in identification cards is nothing new. Radio Frequency Identification Chips will in fact be implanted in passports within coming years. Now, your driver’s license seems like the next step in the execution of a terrible plot to monitor Americans day in and day out. The cards issued state to state will in fact be voluntary but a non card carrier will not be allowed entry into an airport or onto a train. It will be in our best and also worst interest in this case to carry a national ID.

The average person living in London is caught on camera an average of 300 times a day, that is in fact more than any other country. Anyone who has taken the time to check out Google map, a satellite photo of any street address you type in updated daily, knows that even pedestrian technology seems somewhat invasive; just imagine what big brother is capable of. It seems that in a post 9/11 world the fear of terrorism among citizens gives the government the power to create New World Order. What they call the “Real ID Act” gives the Department of Homeland Security the opportunity to design state ID cards and licenses which could one day amount to eye scans, fingerprints and other biometric technology.

The truly repulsive part about this was that Bush attached the proposal to a military spending bill which essentially made it impossible for Senators to disapprove of funding for the troops in Iraq and the Tsunami relief, leaving us vulnerable considering the House of Representatives approved the Real ID Act when it stood alone. The fact that Radio Frequency Identification will now be in our pocket books can only mean one thing: The Government is keeping tabs on your whereabouts at all times.

Every participating state is required to share its Motor Vehicle Database with other states. The database includes all the data printed on the driver’s license and ID cards plus a full history of the driver (violations, suspensions, and points). The truly sad part is that any state that chooses not to participate in linking their database loses all of its federal funding.

So, here we are approaching 2008, an election year it may be in your best interest to keep your eyes and ears open during the debates. Hillary Clinton recently stated: “I am outraged that the Republican leadership in both the House and Senate decided to … put this seriously flawed act into a bill to fund our troops.”

The senator called the act “seriously flawed” and confessed that it shouldn’t have been attached to a “must-pass” military spending bill.

If you are opposed to this act and infringement on our civil liberties then the best defense is education. Learn all you can about what is going on in your country and let it have an impact on choosing the right candidate, and of course PLEASE VOTE! It is clearly the only surefire way to change the future. To learn more about the Real ID you can check out this You Tube video and to oppose the act also consider signing a petition. John F Kennedy once said:

“The ignorance of one voter in a democracy impairs the security of all”, so from the bottom of our closely monitored hearts stay informed and stay safe, in the meantime remember someone is always watching. Reality TV is not just a primetime ratings ploy, it is, in fact, a new way of life.
