At 6:45 a.m. on the Monday morning after Thanksgiving break, I had approximately 2.5 minutes to get ready and get out the door to make it on time to my 8 a.m. class. Like almost all Monday mornings, I went to reach for my favorite dry shampoo – Oscar Blandi Pronto Dry Shampoo – to rejuvenate my hair that I hadn’t washed since Saturday night… except, I couldn’t find it. Of course, I left it on my home bathroom counter, 3000 miles away, and for the remainder of the day, my oily hair was safely hidden under an incredibly unfashionable baseball cap.

As soon as I got out of class (well, after a much-needed shower and some hair-washing), I raced to Walmart to find a replacement for my Oscar Blandi. My college town doesn’t have a Sephora, so I was in search of cult favorites Psst or Batiste. Unfortunately, I couldn’t find either of them. However, I did see TRESemmé’s Fresh Start Dry Shampoo. I purchased it (for about $4), and was ecstatic about finding a dry shampoo that cost less than my favorite Starbucks order.

What is it?

TRESemmé’s product, like all dry shampoos, promises a clean head of hair without the hassle of washing – perfect for making that blowout last a day or two longer. Basically, you spray the product at your roots, brush it out, and voila- oil-free, clean hair.

The dry shampoo market isn’t perfect – even the best products (like my beloved Oscar Blandi) can give dark hair a greyish tint and take a while to completely brush out, so I really did not have high expectations for TRESemmé’s dry shampoo. I figured as long as it made my hair look not disgusting then I’d be happy. After all, I’d bought it for $4, so really, how could it even be a waste of money?

Next to  Rachel Zoe re-runs and chocolate chip cookies, the dollar aisle that’s located in every drug store should be every college girl’s best friend. Who needs all of that expensive Sephora stuff when you have the budget of a homeless man paired with the crafty mind of a student]?

It’s time to take a trip to the toiletry dollar aisle, people. It’s a party back there.

For us ladies, having generally long hair is a pain in the summer months, especially those of us (not so) blessed with the curls. Step outside for just a moment and that coif goes from fresh to ginormously frizzy. You could pull it into a pony tail and hold down the front with an over-sized headband, but you don’t want to spend the summer looking like you just left the gym. If only there were a cuter alternative…

There is, and in this video I’ll show you exactly how to do it so you can be frizz free, cool and still look hot. Best part? No washing required! I swear, it’s a gift from God.

Don’t wanna shower? Try a dry shampoo.

Shockingly, neither of these are good looks.

But what am I supposed to do? If I let my hair go naturally, it blows up Monica-Gellar-goes-to-Hawaii-style. But if I add product, my hair becomes a slick, oily mess.  One summer problem would be enough; dealing with both of these can be tricky.  Luckily, I’ve devoted lots of time to fixing this problem before the heat sets in this summer and I’ve found some products that can help tame these heinous summer looks.

Control the Oil:

Shampoo: Oily hair is actually caused by an oily scalp.  Your scalp produces sebum (oil) and it transfers to your locks.  So when you are looking for a shampoo to combat the oil, you want one that will control the root of the problem.  Shampoos labeled “Sebo-control” are designed to remove the oil from your scalp, like this shampoo from L’Oreal. After lather/rinse/repeating with it, I’ve noticed that the grease stays away longer, especially when hair is straight.

To Condition or Not to Condition: If your hair is only mildly oily and you want to condition, make sure you don’t condition the roots of your hair.  If your hair is especially oily, condition only twice a week and just apply a small amount of conditioner to the ends.

Other Oil Control Tips: Don’t excessively brush your hair; it encourages oil.  Keep your hair pulled back from your face and away from makeup.  If you need some serious oil relief, Jonathon makes a dry shampoo powder that can be used in between washes or on-the go. I’m sure it works great…but then again, so does baby powder.

Combat summer’s other problem: Control the Frizz:

Use a small amount of hair serum on your hair when it is still wet; try Paul Mitchell’s Super Skinny Hair Serum.  It will keep the frizz to a minimum and add a healthy shine, not oil.  For colored hair try Okara Protect Color Serum.  This can be applied in a small amount to dry hair to protect your color and control the frizz.  For a cheap alternative you can also try Suave’s Anti-frizz cream which happens to smell quite delicious.

Other Tips for Frizz-Control: Mousse and Hair Spray can help control frizz but you don’t want to overload your hair and create a build-up (which would add to the summer grease problem!). The serums and cream above are light and effective and thus a better alternative to piling on other products.

Last week, I had been up for over 24-hours straight. I finally crawled into bed two hours before I needed to be up to take a final, promising myself that I would wash my hair in the morning instead of before going to sleep. Needless to say, when the alarm clock buzzed, I hit the snooze, forgetting all about the product-overload-induced greasy hair I was sporting. By the time I got myself out of bed, I had 15 minutes to make my bus. I panicked, picturing myself walking into work after my final donning a pencil skirt, nice blouse…and a baseball cap on top of my head.

But before I ran out the door in a panic, I stopped it. My lifesaver—Batiste Dry Shampoo. Sure, it says on the bottle that it “refreshes and revitalizes hair between washes,” but I hoped it could also work its magic instead of a wash. I flipped my hair over, sprayed generously, and massaged it in, before brushing it out. The result? Well, besides smelling like clean laundry—clean-feeling, soft, hair that was full of the body it was used to. I threw the bottle in my purse just in case I needed a touch-up in between work and a date with the boyfriend, but there was no need.

The Batiste dry shampoo got my hair through the entire day, from my sweat-inducing final to an eight-hour shift followed by dinner and a subway ride to my boyfriend’s apartment—where I did finally, in case you’re wondering, wash my hair.

Whether you have fine hair that gets limp in between shampoos–it’s perfect for those of us who have bangs–or you’re just having a gross week (or month—I’m not judging), this is a must-have for beauty junkies and minimalists alike.
