1. Justin Bieber–Baby. I know, I know, he got famous from YouTube, blah blah blah. But the video just isn’t great. Why are we still watching?

2. Lady Gaga–Bad Romance. I have to admit, my friends and I probably contributed to about half of these views. It’s pretty much how we spent our entire sophomore year of college–watching Gaga do crazy things. But that’s so two years ago.

3. Shakira–Waka Waka. WHAT? How did this get on the list? I don’t know.

4. Rihanna and Eminem–Love the Way You Lie. Ehhh…not that exciting.

5. Charlie Bit Me. Okay so maybe this one deserves the spot. They’re just so cuuuuuute!

There are lots of reasons why different singers and bands collaborate with each other: to gain crossover potential, to feature an up-and-coming artist, or simply just for the sake of name-dropping. These are all pretty standard reasons why it’s hard to find a hit track nowadays that isn’t “featuring” someone else. And while most collaborations usually turn out pretty decently and some even become defining songs of a generation (ex. ANYTHING J. Lo or Ashanti did with Ja Rule back in the early 2000′s), some music collaborations just leave us all wondering “…why?”

But then again, no collaboration could be weirder than this.

How many times a week a day do you Google yourself? An embarrassing amount, right? Almost as embarrassing as the amount of time I spend diagnosing myself with fatal diseases on WebMD. But when we’re not googling our own name and Facebook stalking our frenemies, we’re googling (and ogling) guys. Like, a lot. So we wanted to do a totally scientific study (please note that we did this research while also doing research on the effects of Four Loko on a professional work day) on the most googled guys on the internet. And we were SHOCKED by the results. Like apparently no one else is as into Barry Manilow as I am. But a lot of people are really into Ne-Yo. Who knew?! Now you do!

So let’s take a look back and rock out to the 20 biggest songs of 2010. (It’s like my own little Grammy’s!!)

Some of the biggest names to enter the pop scene in 2010 include B.o.B, Bruno Mars, Mike Posner and Taio Cruz. All of them were hot able to make big names for themselves by earning multiple slots on the Billboard charts with huge hits like “Cooler Than Me.” It was a nice, refreshing change to the usual women of music (Ke$ha, Lady Gaga, Rihanna, and Katy Perry) who seemed to constantly and incessantly rule the airwaves (and YouTube – I’m lookin’ at you, Bad Romance!). And while everyone was going goo goo for Gaga, I’d say Katy Perry was the real queen of pop this year, immediately releasing three megahits off her new album, Teenage Dream.

The music scene was also shaken up by the comebacks of huge artists like Eminem, Usher, and Train who all reminded the world that they’re still alive of who they are and what their music is all about in a big, overplayed way. In addition, we got to hear all different assortments of collaborations from the relatively-unknown-artists-at-the-time, B.o.B and Bruno Mars with “Nothin’ On You,” to the massively famous, all-star duo of Eminem and Rihanna on “Love The Way You Lie.” What probably startled the pop scene the most this year, however, was Lady Antebellum’s, “Need You Now.” I’m not sure I can think of any other recent country song (other than all of Taylor Swift’s, of course) that’s received that much airtime on pop radio stations.

And, lastly, drum roll please… this year’s best and worst! I think I’m gonna have to go with “Airplanes” by B.o.B featuring Paramore’s Hayley Williams and “Bedrock” by Young Money for this year’s best, for both providing us with fresh new sounds and rhymes. As for this year’s most obnoxious, overplayed hits – I think I have to hand this award to both the infamous “California Gurls” and “Rude Boy.” If I never had to hear those overly repetitious songs again, I’d die a happy woman.

Of course, with NYE right around the corner, I have a feeling I’ll be hearing both of them (and their dance remixes) blasting from the DJ booth in 3 short days.

But until then, why don’t we all take some time to indulge in the megahits of 2010 – the ones we loved, the ones we’re sick of, and the many that we’ve totally forgotten about since radio stations only play the same 6 songs over and over and over again. Do I smell an awesome New Year’s Eve pre-party playlist? Rock on, friends. Rock on.

Forget the iPad, iPhone, iPod, and any other device that starts with a lowercase i, because today is all about celebrating the CD player. For those that may have forgotten, it was the bulky device we shoved in our JanSports as we rode the bus to elementary school. The one that came with a 10-pound binder, filled with discs (most of which only contained 2 or 3 songs we actually wanted to listen to).

In honor of nostalgia and the beloved CD player, the device that not too long ago provided us with much needed musical entertainment (and frustrated us with scratches and skips), it’s time to look back at the greatest CDs to ever spin violently inside. Well more like the CDs that made me force my mom to forget the carpool kids and go straight to the store. Because if I wasn’t playing all the chart topping hits from TRL, I was sitting alone at lunch.

No Strings Attached, 2000, *NSYNC: Every generation has a big decision to make that will change their lives forever. For us, it was choosing between BSB and *NSYNC. And my loyalties lay with JT. So I covered every inch of white in my room with posters of the oh so dreamy and so much cooler, Justin, JC, Joey, Lance, and Chris. So when the boys that stole my 2^nd grade heart, singing about tearin’ up hearts in matching white shirts, announced the release of a new album, I could barely contain my excitement. And with doll versions of themselves singing about going Bye, Bye, Bye and proclaiming It’s Gonna Be Me, the album definitely didn’t disappoint.

Oops!… I Did It Again, 2000, Britney Spears: Rewind ten years, back to the time when Britney wasn’t walking barefoot in gas stations, shaving her head, and having quickie weddings. A time when she was hanging out in school gyms dressed barely-there-inappropriate outfits, singing about getting hit with signs, one more time. So when the time came for my favorite pop princess to come out with something new, I was thrilled. And from being stronger than yesterday to the fact that even a star had reason to cry, cry, cry, this Britney album taught elementary school me A LOT.

The Eminem Show, 2002, Eminem: Now this album wasn’t one I could ask my parents for. In fact had they known that I spent my free time listening to strings of curse words (as my dad not-so-lovingly referred to it), I would probably have never seen a CD player again. But from acting up in mental institutions to the bleach blonde hair, no one could deny the draw of Slim Shady. And once my favorite rapper’s (and only rapper I knew at the time) CDs starting playing in my good old CD player, I realized exactly what he meant in Without Me; the world’s just different without Eminem and not in a good way.

Spiceworld, 1997, Spice Girls: From buying tens of hundred of lollipops to collect all the possible stickers to performing as them in my third grade talent show, the Spice Girls had me hypnotized. And being a Spice Girl fanatic, my world became complete with the release of Spiceworld. Till this day I believe that people of the world just need to slam it the left and shake it to the right and spice up their life.

So with that, thank you, CD player; you were responsible for the soundtrack to my childhood and for that I’ll be forever grateful.

Can you believe it’s already been a year since Kanyegate the infamous 2009 VMAs? I’m pretty sure people just stopped buzzing about that sh*tshow show, like, last week. Since then, Taylor Swift has won every single award possible, Jay Z retired…then un-retired, and Eminem returned to the music scene. Oh, and Justin Bieber kept on keeping on.

And now, it’s finally time for the 2010 VMAs. Everyone who’s anyone (read: anyone who’s seen an MTV commercial in the past 3 weeks) is buzzing about the big show. I know I’m excited, but I can’t help but wonder: how will we ever top last year’s crazy show?

Our friends at MTV are most definitely trying, with host Chelsea Handler (love her!) and huge performances by Usher (drool), Jason DeRulo (double drool), and Justin Beiber (drool….if I was still 11). There’s no doubt it’s going to be one memorable show.

But even with all that, will it ever live up to the drama from ’09?

Michael Jackson Tribute:
When a show starts with a jaw-dropping tribute to the late King of Pop, how could it not be one for the record books? MJ’s sister Janet kicked off the show with one of the most visually impressive performances I’ve ever seen. Combined with a surprisingly moving (albeit slightly random) tribute speech made by Madonna, this tribute totally proved why the Jackson family established itself as an untouchable force in pop music.

Lady Gaga “Paparazzi”:
No one has ever accused Lady Gaga of being boring, but it wasn’t until last year’s show that we realized how controversial and influential she actually is. Gaga brought her performance staples: chill-inducing vocals, jerky dance steps, and completely bizarre wardrobe choices to the stage. Along with a crew of backup dancers and a whole lotta weird, she acted out a tale of fame, violence, and death. Did it make sense? Not so much. But Gaga certainly managed to make a lasting impression. In blood.

Taylor Swift and Kanye West:
I don’t think I even need to recap this one. All I have to say is, this moment somehow managed to do the impossible: steal Lady Gaga’s thunder. Tay and Kanye had the most undeniably shocking encounter of the night. For Taylor and her ultimate savior Beyonce, this sitch was a perfect opportunity to show America how a true lady reacts to drunken douche: with grace and resilience. And with the kind of year T. Swift has been having, the girl should probably send Kanye an Edible Arrangement, since his faux pas made her career.

So what kind of drama will we see this year? Will Justin Bieber part his hair to the left? Will Eminem get teabagged again? Will Kanye and Tay Tay perform a duet?

With MTV you never know….but I can’t wait to find out.

Well, almost. You gotta wait until tomorrow to catch the big show, which leaves just enough time to get (fist) pumped up. And what better way to prepare for the big event than by having a Grammy Nominee dance party?

Sometimes I love a band so much, I just sit and wait for them to come out with something new. Well, I don’t literally sit and wait, but I do get really excited when I know a release date is near. And this week, my long and painful wait was over.

Well, for two of the three bands, at least.

Had I actually sat around and waited for Third Eye Blind to release a new album – yes, it took them six years – I would probably be dead by now. And even though it wasn’t an eternity, waiting for Mute Math felt like forever. I was thisclose to completely wearing out their original album. Now, I wasn’t exactly falling off my seat waiting for Cascada to release something new, but they did I listened and enjoyed it nonetheless.

They say distance makes the heart grow fonder and I’m pretty sure that can be said for this week’s new releases:

Third Eye Blind- Ursa Major

Oh, hey Third Eye Blind, you’re back! Yes, you are! How excited is everyone about this? I heard the news about 6 months ago and have been waiting on the edge of my seat since. And I have to say my butt really hurts I’m not disappointed by Third Eye Blind’s new album, Ursa Major. Honestly, from the start of the album, it’s clear that 3eb hasn’t gone anywhere; for a few minutes, I even totally forgot it had been years since they came out with anything new.

So, yes, the first song on the album “Can You Take Me” is the perfect song to start Ursa Major and makes it clear the boys are back. It also really made me want to start shouting back, “Yes! I can take you!” but as I was sitting in a bagel shop the first time I heard it, I had to refrain so I didn’t become the weirdest person in the room of weirdos. “Summer Town” is awesome and should become everyone’s (end of) summer anthem. And winter anthem too. The lyrics are perfect as Third Eye Blind lyrics often are: “All we are are friends who keep on losing time and/Fade away the precious ones we keep in mind and/Realize that I’m the one that you left behind.” “One in Ten” is one of Third Eye Blind’s slower songs and I’m pretty much in love with it. I don’t think it will reach the kind of fame “Deep Inside of You” had, but it’s still pretty fabulous. I’m kind of sad that this album hasn’t been publicized more. Every time I mentioned Third Eye Blind’s new album, people would say in disbelief, “What? They have a new album??”

Everyone should know about this; not just those who follow the music scene closely. So, tell your friends, Third Eye Blind is back!

Mute Math- Armistice

I’ve been waiting a long time for Mute Math’s new album. Like a super long time. And my wait is finally over. I can stop listening to their self-titled debut album for a bit (as much as I do love it) and listen to something new. And Mute Math’s new album? You might not believe me, but it’s even better than the first! Armistice really shows how the band has grown and I’m more than impressed by it. I love Paul Meany’s recent quote that, “Our goal is to embarrass the first record, that’s what we’re trying to do here, and I think we’re on point to pull it off.” Awesome goals.

I definitely don’t think they embarrassed the first album (at all), but that doesn’t mean I’m not in love with the new one. Like I said, I listened to their first album like crazy to obsessive levels. It would be nearly impossible to embarrass it. “Plan B” is, and probably always will be, on my top 10 list of best songs ever. And one that I’ll never get sick of. But I think Armistice might have a few songs that are almost just as good! I’m mostly in love with the title track “Armistice” right now. I love how it sounds like typical Mute Math, with a big band sound thrown in for fun. It makes me want to dance, it makes me want to chill out, and it makes me just plain love life. I’m also really loving “Lost Year” because it’s so different than the typical Mute Math you’re used to. When it first started playing, I was convinced it was actually The Fray. I love Mute Math’s versatility; there’s something for everyone, so you should definitely check ‘em out.

Cascada-Evacuate the Dancefloor

Someone else is back. And that someone is Cascada. I can’t say I’ve been the biggest Cascada fan ever, but their “Every Time We Touch” song is always fun for dancing around to and having a good time. Plus, I’ve listened to their Rascal Flatts cover of “What Hurts the Most” only about a million times, so I figured I’d have to check out her new album, Evacuate the Dancefloor.

The album was really a mish-mash of music. Since I’ve never listened to a Cascada album all the way through, this could very well be exactly what they’re always like; who knows? I didn’t mind it, but I wonder if they’re trying to be too many things to too many people? The title track “Evacauate the Dancefloor” reminded me a lot of Lady Gaga; kind of techno-y and obviously about dancing. However, I’m not the biggest Eminem fan and I’m fairly certain I heard him in there, though I think it may have been an imitator. Eek. Surprisingly, I liked the slower Cascada songs the best. I really like “Hold Your Hands Up,” which was more of a sweet ballad. And I’ve been listening to “Draw the Line” a lot, as well. Even the slower songs aren’t going to have lyrics that will blow you away (“tick tock says the clock on the wall,” for instance), but the tunes are nice and they’re perfect for easy listening. As far as the more dance-y songs go, “Ready or Not” definitely got me moving. Overall, I think Cascada is a nice addition to the music library, though I probably won’t be a non-stop listener.

When that happens, it also shows how ridiculously unprofessional you are.

Last night, Paula Abdul took to her official Twitter account to announce that she is not returning to judge American Idol next year. As usual, the major news outlets picked up on this immediately and began reporting it, actually quoting her tweets (one of which replaces the word “one” with “1.”) Now, it’s one thing for a celebrity – or anyone, for that matter – to tweet their feelings about a breaking story. It’s another thing entirely to break the story first on your Twitter page.

This isn’t the first time that a celebrity has taken to Twitter to make information public that should be private, or at least released through another medium. In June, Perez Hilton tweeted about being assaulted by Will.I.Am’s manager just after the incident occurred, pleading for help. Currently, Eminem and Nick Cannon are engaged in a very public Twitter feud that is borderline…well, actually, completely ridiculous.

I have no problem with celebrities using Twitter to reach out to their fans and make themselves seem more down-to-earth. But celebrity Twitters are not substitutes for a good publicist and a telephone, and they are definitely not replacements for reputable news organizations. Yes, there is virtue in hearing news straight from the horse’s mouth, but an announcement on the Internet written with 140 characters or less screams a lack of professionalism.

As much as I love Twitter, a big problem I have with it is that it acts as an enabler for attention-hungry celebrities and wannabe celebs. Clearly, by tweeting information that should remain private or be broadcast through different channel, these celebrities are looking to draw attention to themselves. Paula Abdul wanted to be the one to break the news about American Idol, not her publicist or the Fox network. Perez Hilton wanted to create a melodramatic scene on his Twitter in order to be noticed. These celebrities are just desperate for the limelight, and tweeting in such a way is just another means of getting it.
