Another year has almost come to an end…and what a year it’s been! But instead of recapping the last twelve months by clicking through tagged photos on Facebook or scrolling through oodles of Twitter updates, let us look back at the technology that make it all possible.

Hint: I’m talking about some of the very same technology that we all freaked out about when it first came out.

Smartphone vs. Smartphone: Google entered the smartphone market when they launched their Android all the way back in January. But that didn’t scare Apple away from launching their new iPhone in June (though its reception favored left-handed talkers and called for ton of free “bumper” cases from Steve Jobs). Then came the Blackberry Torch in August and the Windows 7 phone in October. It seems that Smartphones are no longer a luxury item, but a necessity. You were cool if you had one in 2009, but if you don’t have one by 2011, you and your T9Word texting on that black-and-white screen better start saving up.

Foursquare: The schoolyard ballgame is now a new type of social media? Okay, so the “game” started back in 2009, but our favorite businesses and restaurants didn’t start playing until this year. And even though it’s pretty creepy to let complete strangers know where you are and where you’ve been and what you’re doing at any moment, it’s pretty awesome that you can “check in” for discounts. By the end of this holiday (shopping) season, I will be Mayor of my local mall…and my bank account be mayor of “broke.”

Just when we all thought Facebook was ruining everything, the social media network launches a new version of Groups – and it is actually good for things more than simply clogging our invites inbox and cluttering our profile pages (do I really feel more connected to anyone by joining ‘All the Lee’s of the World’?!). Facebook Groups is another amazing reason to remain an active social media-holic while somehow still getting work done:

Friend organization and productivity. Different from the older version of Groups, this new feature lets us categorize our friends for the purpose of mass messaging, photo and event sharing, and custom privacy settings (similar to the Friend Lists) Yet those days of Facebook were so unproductive – now, groups can edit documents together. This is good news for those inevitable collaboration projects in class since the slackers can no longer get by with the excuse, “I didn’t get that email…”

Group news feed and notifications. Because your default news feed is already flooded with drunk status updates and virtual PDA between a pair of high school sweethearts, Groups has a separate feed fit for members only. This allows people to post content relevant to the group in place where people will actually read it, and notification preferences can be set so that your iPhones aren’t constantly lighting up mid-lecture when your friends are all online.

What a week! Between Heidi and Spencer’s “spontaneous wedding,” the surfacing of some scary pro-anorexia support groups on Facebook, and the arrival of yet another frigid winter, we couldn’t wait for the weekend to come. And by “weekend” we mean Thanksgiving, only the best holiday of all time.

Upon arriving at home to a comfy bed, clean shower, and lots of home cookin’, we immediately headed out to the bar to enjoy the Biggest Bar Night of the Year. We are using the term “enjoy” loosely, of course, because the evening was really just a night of awkward conversation and not enough alcohol. (Funny, that sounds a lot like Thanksgiving dinner when our bf met our parents.)

We loaded up on the carbs at Thanksgiving dinner to prepare for today’s Black Friday shopping spree, and besides a few broken nails and a black eye (on that bitch who tried to grab the last Flip Cam),  things turned out OK.  We came home with the perfect gift for our roommates, got some hot new jeans, and a really cute scarf to cover the hickey our BF left on the most obvious part of our neck.

Now it’s time to enjoy the rest of the weekend…and all the Thanksgiving leftovers.
