Daily Annoyance: Teen Vogue

I used to think Teen Vogue was the best shit on the stands. All that high-class style and gossip for two bucks a pop? I signed up for a five – year subscription. I found the haughty content amusingly hilarious and would crave my monthly society updates on things like Bunny Von Hartzelcarter – Markstein’s cotillion and the eating habits and bedroom – decorating abilities of obscure young porcelain actresses.

Unlike its mother, the almighty Vogue, Teen Vogue featured fashions that were young, cool and almost affordable. A girl can dream, and I’d rather dream about a $300 Philip Lim denim trapeze dress than a $4000 quilted leather jacket by Alexander McQueen.

But this month’s issue is a little ridiculous. Plaguing the cover are the perpetual interns, LC of the OC and her sidekick, Whitey. I mean Whitney. It’s Whitney! Seriously, though, when are their internships going to end? Read More »

Harry Potter: New Movie, New Book, Fashion Inspiration?

harryfashion.jpgSomehow, I managed to forget about the whole Harry Potter thing for a while. I’ve read all the books, and I’ve seen all the movies, but I wouldn’t consider myself obsessed or anything. And with years to wait in between installments, it’s hard to stay invested in the series.

So it took me by surprise when I recently realized that the next movie, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, opens on July 11, and the next and final book, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, comes out on July 21.

I’m kind of astonished that there hasn’t been more hype about this double dose of Harry. Maybe if J.K. Rowling or Daniel Radcliffe spent some time in jail or rehab, I’d be more aware of these things.

Now that I know, though, I’m pretty psyched.

Apparently the Harry hype hasn’t gone unnoticed by everyone. One place he’s making his influence felt is…fall fashion?

According to Australia’s Brisbane Times, the Harry Potter phenomenon has already popularized small round spectacles, and soon enough we muggles will also be wearing blazers and striped, v-neck sweaters over shirts and ties. “Geek chic with a hint of magic” may also include robes and capes, or owls, bats, and rats as accents.

I don’t think I’ll be buying any black silk capes anytime soon, but I am wondering if I have time to re-watch the first four movies by July 11 and re-read the first six books by July 21…

Glasses are What’s Hot

glasses-3-3.jpgAccording to the scene on the runway, spectacles are going to be fall’s newest accessory. Does anybody else find it a little depressing that autumn trends have already been forecasted and it’s not even summer yet? It’s like department stores starting to play Christmas music before Halloween—downright depressing. Such is life. At least it gives us a little time to prepare, even though by the time we actually get there Spring lines will have already debuted. Ah fashion, what would we do without your nonsense?

But back to the glasses.

As you can see from the shots from Chris Benz and Miu Miu respectively, the look was very sexy librarian. “Glasses are a very covered-up way of saying something provocative,” said stylist Kate Young. You have to admit, there is something hot about subtle sexiness. Why do you think the librarian has been a staple male fantasy since the beginning of time, or maybe just Playboy? There’s just something hot about potential, the moment when the “nerd” shakes out her hair, ditches her glasses for contacts, and nabs the student body president. Wait, was that the plot to “She’s All That”…? Read More »
