From CollegeFashion: 4 Ways to Wear Stripes This Season

[The following is a guest post from our gal pals at CollegeFashion.net. They're like college Rachel Zoe (with a little extra meat on their bones). Have you checked them out yet?!]

Stripes can be intimidating. They’re bold, they’re brazen and they can be a little difficult to wear. Some people fear that horizontal stripes make you look wider (totally not true!!) and they can be a little too bold for the wallflowers among us. So it’s understandable that some would be hesitant about them.

But stripes can also be fun and exciting, injecting a little bit of punk rock into an everyday outfit. Stripes were a big trend on the Spring/Summer 2011 catwalks, and they’re an easy way to get a next season feel right now.  Read More »

From CollegeFashion: Style a Pair of High-Top Sneakers

The following is a guest post from our gal pals at CollegeFashion.net. Have you checked them out yet?!

Despite my affinity for heels and wedges, sometimes my feet need a break! Ballet flats and boat shoes certainly make great alternatives, but if you’re like me, you love making a statement (even on your laid-back days).

Once reserved for hipsters or basketball players, high-top sneakers are on their way to making a full-fledged comeback on college campuses. I was hesitant to buy a pair at first, but when I spotted the perfect pair of black, yellow, and pink Nike Dunks on sale at an outlet mall, I knew I had to have them!

It took me a little while to figure out how to style these babies — at 5’2”, shoes with no heel and thick ankles can easily make me look stumpy. But I did a bit of research and found out that my new high top sneakers can be stylish and flattering if worn correctly.

Bad Advice Women Get: Grocery Store Glamour

Is this chic enough for the cereal aisle?

Okay, I’ll admit it: I spend a decent chunk of my time gawking at the heinous outfits documented on Go Fug Yourself, a site where two hilarious writers analyze the wacky get-ups worn by the rich and supposedly stylish. There’s something so satisfying about seeing how even gorgeous celebrities, who are endowed with personal stylists, makeup artists, and assistants upon assistants, can somehow leave their mansions thinking that things like this (or this! And don’t forget this!) actually look good.

But even though the Fug Girls can get a little vicious from time to time—any celeb wearing leggings instead of pants better be prepared to get seriously ripped apart by these ladies—I really admire the fact that their site generally only critiques the crazy things stars wear to high-profile events, like movie premieres and awards shows. Even these bitchy bloggers try to stay away from criticizing boldface names for throwing on ratty jeans and sweatshirts while they’re walking their dogs, or pumping gas, or doing any of the other menial chores that gossip rags love to say make stars seem Just Like Us. That’s because everyone knows that sometimes, it’s nice to forget fashion and wear whatever’s comfortable—especially if you’re just out running errands.

Well, everyone but Suze Yalof Schwartz of Glamour Magazine. In January, Schwartz took a trip to a Whole Foods store in search of women whose choice of garb left something to be desired. Her quest to take unsuspecting shoppers from “eek to chic” was documented for a Glamour Don’ts to Dos segment on the Today Show. Read More »

Shopping Your Closet: 3 Ways To Wear A Black T-Shirt

img-thing[I used to show you how to pull off runway trends in the series "Rock the Look." In this new series, I'll be taking a different item you probably already have in your closet each week and showing you three new ways to wear it. After all, the best shopping tip anyone will give you is to only buy pieces that work with something you already own.]

A t-shirt is probably something you wear to the gym, or to class with a pair of sweatpants and a hoodie. However, that plain, boring black tee has a lot of fashion potential.

Here, I used this black t-shirt from American Eagle Outfitters to create three cute outfits that anyone could pull off. Here are three new ways to rock a plain t-shirt: Read More »

Everything I’ve Ever Learned From What Not to Wear

What Not to WearI’ll be the first to admit that I am a What Not to Wear junkie. I love (and am not afraid to admit it) watching Stacey and Clinton trash horrible wardrobes, and watching people’s confidence blossom when they feel good about themselves. I would love for S&C to come to my house with a set of rules. The $5,000 Visa wouldn’t hurt either.

I’m just not sure about the “throw all my clothes away” thing. But that’s neither here nor there.

Now, there are many WNTW rules that I don’t need to worry about (I’ve got years before being tempted by the “mom jeans”), and I doubt I’ll be getting on the show anytime soon, but those fashion experts provide tons of guidelines that everyone can benefit from.

Everything I’ve learned about flattering fashion I learned from What Not To Wear. The following rules, courtesy of Stacey and Clinton, can guide all of us into more flattering options when shopping, or when trying to clean the skeletons from our closets. Read More »

Rock the Look: Graphic Tees

picture-2.png

A colorful graphic tee (like the Henry Holland ones above) will make your outfit stand out. However, if it’s not usually your style, it can be hard to incorporate one into your ensemble without looking too casual, too punky, or like you’re trying too hard.

Below are a few examples for different ways to rock the graphic tee. You can pair one with dressier items for a more glam look, or work it with some basic jeans and fun accessories for the more casual version. Whatever you do, have fun with it. These shirts aren’t mean to be taken seriously. Read More »

Rock the Look: Headbands

picture-5.png

[Do you ever feel like you can’t pull something off? Have trendy pieces in your closet that you would never have the courage to actually wear out? Well take those pieces out, shake off the dust, and continue reading! In this series, I will choose a different piece that can be difficult to incorporate into an outfit and give you ideas on how to wear it. If there’s anything you would like to read about in the future, please leave a comment!]

Headbands of all kinds are really in right now, thanks to Leighton Meester’s character Blair Waldorf on “Gossip Girl.” Headbands are simple accessories which can make you look instantly 10x cuter. Plus, they can hide those greasy roots you have from living in the library this week sans showers.

Headbands with bows are really girly and youthful. While they can look a little childish, worn with the right things they can make your outfit look polished. Blair Waldorf (above), for example, pairs her headband with a sophisticated blazer and collared shirt. This is definitely not something a little girl would wear. Usually something simple, like a sweater or solid color dress, would also work well. Read More »
