I’m pining over something a little different this week. It’s a little outside my comfort zone, and that’s exactly why I’m in love. It’s not a plunging neckline or a skimpy skirt, it’s actually a super cool ring.
So you think a ring that gets me a little nervous makes me boring? I’d have to disagree. There’s nothing wrong with playing on the safe side of fashion. For me, it’s finding ways of adding things into my wardrobe that are cooler than I think I am without necessarily having the major shock value. I like to get a subtle response out of people, whether it’s an approving double take or a friend that tells me something I own is awesome.
A ring that’s a little risky for me is a great way for me to get a reaction- I’d rather everyone was staring at the risk on my finger than a risk that’s risqué.
This dark, gemmed snake ring is the kind of accessory I would see on a girl on campus who I envied because she was effortlessly cool and edgy. I can picture myself as that girl when I see this ring, the snake twisted around a finger that’s curled around a cup of coffee, probably in the company of some hipsters playing guitar and killing everyone around them with their coolness.
OK, so maybe this ring isn’t going to change who I am, and I’m not hoping it will either. What makes the ring such a desirable object for me is that’s it’s not something I would usually drool over. It’s not exactly my style, and I like to invest in pieces that I can wear often, that are generic and go with everything. While that philosophy can make your bang for your wardrobe buck go pretty far, it can get a little monotonous (so maybe it does make me a tad of a snooze, you win). Read More »

[While everyone is fabulous in their own right, we thought we should celebrate the campus fashionistas of the world for their continued excellence in not looking like a hot mess for class. So, we started stalking those girls on campus (think Victoria's fun accessories) to get a few pics and get some tips on their personal style.
And maybe a restraining order or two.
But it’s worth it to highlight fresh, unique wardrobe choices that show personality and the courage to wear what you believe in. You think you’ve got some major style? Know someone else who’s always looking ferosh? Think the world needs to see what she can do? Send us an email with some photos and she could be the next fashionista celebrated right here.]
For someone who adores UFC, Scaachi definitely does not dress the part (though if you bought her a “Tap out” t-shirt she’d probably love you forever). The first time I was formally introduced to Scaachi, she was dressed like Jackie O. (it was Halloween), but since then I’ve always admired her feminine style. I can probably count on one hand how many times I’ve seen her in pants in the months I’ve known her, as she says skirts and dresses are much more sophisticated and give her room to move (in case she needs to practice her wrestling moves?).
The perfect example of how to make discount fashion look good, Scaachi always looks put together, despite the fact that she shops at some of the thriftiest stores around. But what stands out about her most is her signature accessory: an interesting, unique coat. She’s always got one topping off her outfits and the day I found her, it was this black brocade coat that stopped me in my tracks. It was so beautiful, yet so understated at the same time (much like all of Scaachi’s accessory choices). She didn’t look like a girl on her way to class – she looked like some fabulous fashion magazine editor on her way to a shoot.
Maybe it’s her attention to detail, maybe it’s her ability to mix things together to get just the right look, or maybe it’s the bold lip she favors (which most college girls shy away from), but this girl’s got a style that totally inspires me. Read More »

Hoodies and zip-ups are foolproof garments when it comes to warmth and comfort. However, sometimes it’s all too easy to look like you’re wearing sweats or gym clothes when you’re rocking a hoodie. Fortunately, there are lots of stylish ways to make hoodies work as part of a fashionable wardrobe – you just have to get a little creative.
Option 1: Layer, Layer, Layer
Layering is an easy way to make your hoodie look less athletic and more chic. If your sweatshirt is thin enough, it’s easy to layer it under a fabulous jacket to add just a hint of sporty chic to your ensemble. Read More »

Everyone has heard at least one old fashion rule. Have you ever been told not to wear white after Labor Day, or that your jewelry metals must match?
If you’re like me, you grew up hearing these from your mom or grandma whenever you wore something they didn’t like. You thought your outfit was fine, but one of the rules probably made you rethink it. Many of you may still believe one or two of them, because you’ve heard them so many times.
Believe it or not, most of those fashion rules are completely outdated and false!
As someone who loves fashion but doesn’t believe in old-fashioned rules, I say it’s time to put some of these style myths to rest once and for all. It’s 2010, and grandma’s fashion rules just don’t apply anymore.
Here’s the CF list of fashion rules you’re allowed (and encouraged) to break: Read More »

There are some people who always come to school looking like they just picked up whatever piece of clothing was in their line of sight, that may or may not be clean (determined by the ever scientific “Sniff Test”). Then there are others who are always dressed so fashionably that you wonder if they live in a clothing store. Or how freaking early they wake up to pull an entire outfit together before making the trek to class.
While everyone is fabulous in their own right, we thought we should celebrate the campus fashionistas of the world for their continued excellence in not looking like a hot mess for class. So, we started stalking those girls on campus to get a few pics and get some tips on their personal style. And maybe a restraining order or two. Enter Sarah.
Even though she isn’t in college anymore, Sarah still exudes the typical college girl enthusiasm for new clothes and the word “sale.” When I approached her and begged to take a picture of her look, she agreed… but only if I took a picture of the back of her skirt. She wanted to show off the best parts of her look: the pretty metallic details and ruffles next to the rich color of her scarf. She’s also got this very Nicole Richie, I-didn’t-try-too-hard twisted pin-up braid going on that’s super cute and complements the entire look perfectly.
As a recent college grad, Sarah is always busy running to and from interviews and meetings. She doesn’t have a lot of time to spend on makeup and hair, which she doesn’t mind. Her style philosophy: a cute outfit to match her bag and long, flirty eyelashes. Sweet and simple. I love it. Read More »
