8 Under $20: Gap (Back to Basics)

With all of these trends milling around in fashion spreads and tabloid magazines, I can barely keep my head on straight.  What do I buy? The fringe purse or the fur vest!?!? Jeggings or slouchy pants?! [Deep breathing.]

But let’s get real: in one month fur vests will totally be out and you’ll be looking down at your werewolf vest and clogs wondering what the hell you were thinking.

That is why we need to get smart and go ‘back to basics’ with simple tees, cardigans, and timeless colors and styles.  The best place to conquer a closet full of clothes that always last and go with everything? A little three letter word we know and love: Gap. And the best part? You can stock up on these timeless pieces for under $20.  Boo-yah. Read More »

The September Issue: The Essentials

There are a lot of reasons to look forward to autumn: pumpkin spice lattes, the leaves changing color, good television, and – oh yeah – Fall fashion. September is the January of the fashion world, with designers battling it out to set this year’s trends, and magazines battling it out to report them.

The September Issues are back for another year, and bigger than ever. This month’s Vogue was over 700 pages. Glamour released its largest issue in 20 years.  And don’t forget about InStyle, Elle, Marie Claire, and Harper’s Bazaar. That’s a lot of reading material, even for a seasoned fashionista. So consider this your fashion cheat sheet. I’ve drooled over slaved over pages and pages of bags, boots, coats, and colors to bring you this seasons it items (without 497 pages of ads). Enjoy! The Jersey Shore Goes Glam?

You can take the girl outta Jersey, but you can’t take the Jersey outta the girl.

Unless you’re Harper’s Bazaar, that is.

Yup, these Guidettes have come a long way from Seaside Heights and have been everywhere from The View to YouTube, always donning Ed Hardy’s finest. Now they’re hitting the newstands.

No, not in Playboy (…yet). A very bold (and, based on the above photo, talented) team at Harper’s Bazaar, the highest of high fashion magazines, has stripped Sammi of her shredded tanks, jorts and scoul; J-Woww of her boob-baring excuses for shirts; and Snooki of her fuzzy slippers; and put these Jersey girls in some serious haute couture. Duke It Out: Socks and Sandals?

Hot daaaamn or hot mess?

[It's pretty obvious that the average CollegeCandy reader has some very strong opinions. Opinions that she likes to share with everyone on the site. We love a strong woman (unless she happens to be charging at us with her fists raised), so we thought we'd give her a real forum to discuss her thoughts, feelings, and perspectives. Every Friday I'll be featuring a hot topic (like grad school!) and leaving it up to you, the readers, to duke it out. So, read it and get your debate on in the comments section below!]

Ok, I noticed this one floating around out there early this fall and the time has come for somebody to say something – what’s the deal with wearing socks with our summer heels? At first I thought it was just J Crew trying to make socks sexy or cute or something that will make us want to buy them, but I just finished reading the new issue of Glamour and they had a photo spread where nearly half the pics showed the model with thick strappy sandals or peep-toes + socks.

Admittedly, these were nice, colorful socks – not your gym variety – but still, I’m torn about whether this is OK.

On the one hand, anything that gives me a chance to wear my pretty summer shoe collection more than just a measly 3 months out of the year is a good thing in my book (hey, those things cost money!). And I have to admit, I’ve been a sock fan for a while now but rarely have a chance to wear anything more exciting than the white tennis-shoe variety. So it seems like two rights should make a right, right? (OK, that was confusing.) Plus, on the models, I can’t help but find the look kind of cute in a funky sort of way, so why not give it a try? Warm toes plus cute shoes is a total win! Read More »

Duke It Out: The Romper

tih_rompersCall it a jumpsuit, catsuit, an adult onesie, whatever – these things are obviously all the rage… in magazines at least. I’ve been seeing these grown-up versions of your favorite baby-wear all over the fashion mags (and even this very site) this season and I have to admit, on the glossy pages, they look cute. But I also notice that I haven’t seen an actual human being (excluding mechanics) wearing them in real life. Is this just another fashion-world thing, or are there packs of romper-wearers running wild some place I haven’t seen?

According to pretty much everyone in the fashion industry, rompers are the perfect summer outfit because they’re comfy, versatile and you don’t have to think about them much. Ok, I can see that. They supposedly give you a pulled together look that can be dressed up or down. Alright, I’m liking this. But then I notice a little problem – when you inevitably have to pee during the day (and let’s face it, you will have to pee), you basically have to strip down to your skivvies in a bathroom that probably isn’t your own. I am officially not down with that. Read More »

Stylista: Kate, Please GO HOME

stylista-kate.bmp

Why in God’s name would anyone keep Kate around instead of Cologne? (I’m still getting over this) All she does is complain and act like a baby about everything. Wah Wah Wah. I felt a glimmer of hope last night that maybe she’d leave voluntarily — cue the scene where she cried to her mommy on the phone.

But no.

Just like a little puppy who’s been slapped by it’s master, she forgets about the abuse and goes back for more. Honestly, since all of these reality shows aren’t really reality shows, they’re probably keeping the whiner on air because she creates so much drama. Everyone absolutely hates her — probably including everyone watching.

Aside for my personal feelings on baby Kate, last night’s episode was notable for a few reasons.

1. Anne saying, “I could run with the bulls in these shoes.”

Honey, there is no way in hell you can even walk like a pro in those let alone run in them. Stop trying to be Anna Wintour.

2. Megan complaining (surprise) about her team for the editorial challenge, “I want to pull out my hair, lay on the floor and die.”

I guess I might want to do that if I was her. But just because I can’t stand Kate and well, Ashlie isn’t really rubbing me the right way these days either. I mean, ever since her heavy weeping for Cologne’s departure, I’ve been a bit disgusted.

3. The headless mannequins being dragged around Manhattan in a box. Hilarious

4. Danielle flipping out on Kate. That. Was. AMAZING.

Quiet, chill Danielle has been calm and collected all along, so it was pretty satisfying to see her lose it a bit. Naturally someone can only tolerate Kate for so long.

5. The judges really putting Megan in her place last night. THANK YOU.

In the end, I wasn’t upset to see Devin or William go. They really didn’t bring much to the table. However, now were left with a bunch of crazies, minus Danielle. I would say Johanna’s a normal one, but from the looks of next week’s episode, she’s a bit of a lune too.

Love It or Hate It: Menswear

menswear.jpgEvery fashion magazine I flip through lately has pictures of women sporting men’s clothing: oversized sweaters, the “boyfriend jean,” and large, knit vests. The look seems to be taking over the world from runways to college hallways, and has me wondering if I should raid my guy friends’ closests in search of trendy options (Hey, it’s a recession and I like “shopping” on a budget), or just stick to my more feminine looks.

Some girls look really cute in this trend, but I fear that I would just look like the 7th grade version of myself when I used to be a little hefty and could only fit into my older brothers’ hand-me-down flannel shirts. Yeah, those were the days.

On the other hand, maybe this look is good for those of us doin’ the Walk of Shame from our boyfriend’s; instead of looking like a hot mess, we may look uber stylish!

So, what do you think? Is the menswear look hot or very, very not?
