Finals. While high school cared enough to only dish ‘em out once a year, we’re no longer so lucky. “So I’m supposed to remember everything since August? Is this cumulative? IS THERE EXTRA CREDIT?!” (Sidenote: Who else is psyched that EC opps still exist in college?). So what’s a girl to do?

Simple. Start now. And follow these lovely (simple, and rewarding) steps to prep yourselves for hell week.

The 6.5 Steps to Finals Success:

Get papers out of the way: Papers are majorly lame. Are they going to get you an A on a final? Nope. So knock them out of the way first in order to focus on the heavily-weighted 100 short-answer exam you have coming up in your Psych class.

Breaks: So important. Has your mind gotten clogged up with calculator functions yet? Take this opportunity to f*&k s#!t up at the gym between 3-page increments of that research paper.

Hard work (Dedication!): Keep your eyes on the prize. By now, you have a ballpark idea of what your final grades could be. Let there be no slippage! And hey, coming home with a 3.5 (or better, obv) before Christmas will definitely boost your chances of seeing a shiny 4S under the tree (or by the light of your menorah)!

Rewards: Finally turned in that research paper? Good job. Treat yourself to a re-run of the VS Fashion Show or a well-deserved blackout!

Outlines: Get this crap out of the way ASAP. Literally… just re-type those study guides your professors gave you all the time and build up this study skeleton with a healthy dose of factual meat. So mindless, yet so helpful.

Sleep: Awkward that I need to remind you… but I guess that’s what happens when you move outta momma’s house. It’s been scientifically proven that you’ll be 100% more alert if you sleep before an important exam or project than if you pull an all nighter. (And I didn’t even need to research that! Thanks, common sense.) It’s more efficient to do a bit of studying before bed, say 11:30ish, and rise half an hour earlier to put in that much more effort. You’ll retain the information better because it’s being repeated at another time, and you won’t wake up ugly. Win-win!

Rewards: Yeah, there’s the other .5. Go rage again, you deserve it. Or be mellow and buy a holiday latte. Your call.

Good luck, fellow freshies! Break is right around the corner.

With finals season fast approaching (or maybe it’s already here for you unlucky few), CollegeCandy would like to issue a public service announcement. Yes, classes are officially over. Yes, you will face a series of tests that test the knowledge you acquired in said classes. Yes, obviously, they’re a big deal. But should you ignore the rules of civilized conduct and go balls-to-the-wall crazy in your efforts to secure the best grades possible? Ummm…please don’t.

For your safety, please follow the few simple rules we’ve collected here for you. You’ll thank us later when you’re not 20 lbs heavier and missing teeth.

1. Eat properly. We both know all that Red Bull isn’t good for you. We also know that Gummi worms don’t count as a serving of fruit and awesomeness. Grab some carrot sticks and a eco-friendly bottle of water.

2. Get some sleep. Real sleep. Not in the library.

3. Pace yourself. Devise an organized approach to studying that doesn’t leave you cramming at the last minute. Then stick to it.

4. Stay of Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Pinterest, etc. Ten minutes of “let me just see what people are up to” can quickly turn into three hours of reblogging, live tweeting and stalking exes. That’s embarrassing and unproductive.

5. Avoid any/all crazy situations resembling this scene that arose at William & Mary.

Brace yourself ladies, because today is not just any other Friday.
Today is Friday the 13th.

Brace yourself ladies, because today is not just any other Friday.

Today is Friday the 13th.

The day of bad luck and cursed lives and black cats and broken mirrors. Today is a day to fear. Today is a day to lock our doors and stay inside. Why is Friday the 13th supposed to be such an unlucky day, you ask? I think it has something to do with the superstitions surrounding the 13th and Fridays in general (guess Rebecca Black never heard about that) joining together to be the ultimate source of bad luck on Friday the 13th. And as a result there are lots of horrors that await us. Is it true? I doubt it. But even so, you might want to prepare yourself.

For anything.

Here are 13 unlucky situations (AKA, every college girl’s worst nightmare) you better wish you don’t find yourself in on this unlucky Friday the 13th.

1. Your hair straighter/dryer/curling breaks minutes before your big date… with only half your head done.

2. You sleep through your final exam.

3. Your hard drive crashes…before you printed out your final paper.

4. The guy you’ve been crushing on goes Facebook official with your frenemy.

5. Your train reroutes on the way to your interview.

6. You accidentally send a sext to your parents.

7. The heel of your shoe breaks as you’re walking to the bar.

8. Your favorite celebrity couple calls it quits.

9. They’re out of Red Bull at the Stop and Shop.

10. The guy who cut in front of you in line got the winning lotto ticket.

11. You pull a muscle at the gym. Between your legs.

12.You get food poisoning from the dining hall special.

13.Your professor overhears you bad mouthing him…right before it’s time to put in final grades.

Alright ladies, what would be the worse thing that could happen to you on Friday the 13th?

But don’t worry, studying for finals this semester will be a breeze with Cramster! Cramster is a comprehensive online study and homework help resource that will make studying for your exams a lot easier. With Cramster, you can download study guides and lecture notes by subject, create and join study groups and take practice exams.

The awesomeness doesn’t stop there. Cramster‘s “Textbook Help” section of its site make it a super useful resource all semester long. As a reward for answering questions and helping out your fellow Cramster users, you can earn “Karma” points and redeem them for rewards, such as giftcards, electronics and more! How cool is that?

If you feel like you really need all the help you can get, Cramster also offers a paid premium version of the site with access to more features and faster responses from the homework help experts.

The only downside I’ve found with Cramster so far is that I didn’t know about it sooner — it sure would have helped me out in high school!

According to the Daily Beast, Columbia University, my school, offers the most stressful undergraduate experience in the country.

Admittedly, taking a tour of any campus library during midterms or finals is enough to set your nerves on edge. Under-eye bags are as common on campus as Longchamp bags. Many students (especially first-years) constantly complain about their work overload. However, during my three years here, I have never pulled an all-nighter, missed a deadline, asked for an extension, or taken Adderall, caffeine pills or any type of energy drink (though, admittedly, I was studying abroad during the era of Fourloko).

Is this some sort of miracle? Am I a genius? Do I have photographic memory? No, I wish, and that actually doesn’t exist. But that’s another story. What I am is organized and realistic. And successful.

Here are some of my tips for keeping it all together.

My first tip applies to registration. Try to choose at least one class that will lift your spirits. Whether it is a new language class, an art class or a P.E. class, getting credit for something you enjoy will make your whole course load feel lighter. You might even think about taking this class Pass/Fail.

Secondly, buy a planner or agenda and do everything you can to make sure you use it. For me, this means colored pens, stickers and the compulsion to always have it in my bag and write everything down as soon as I find out about it. Knowing where you need to be can make your day feel less cluttered and give you peace of mind.

On the subject of clutter, keeping your living spaces organized and clean can free can be therapeutic. There are a lot of nice things in the world that are expensive, but the one nice thing that is absolutely free is cleanliness. On a day where nothing seems to be going your way, organizing your dorm room, desk drawers and clothes can be a step in the right direction. (Don’t know where to start? Check out organization expert Peter Walsh’s tips for organizing your space.)

Try to take really good notes. Focusing on making them look nice can keep you from zoning out in class. Resist the urge to check your email or Facebook on your phone. Doodling on a notebook is better than connecting to the outside world. This is why I don’t bring my laptop to class; the act of physically writing down key lecture points keeps me engaged. Skyping your long-distance boyfriend during that history lecture is a bad use of your time and will only make it harder to study down the road. Trust me – I’ve done it.

Take care of your body. Eat well, keep a fairly regular sleep schedule, exercise and meditate. A half hour of cardio is a great way to work through stress. It clears your mind, boosts your self-esteem and gives you the energy to help you attack the rest of the day.

Laugh! You don’t need to have a crazy late night out to have fun. Get dinner with friends, share ridiculous YouTube videos, have impromptu karaoke competitions or dance parties in your hallway. These are the moments you will always remember…and the moments that will keep you sane.

Try to always look presentable. Sure, slumping to class in your sweatpants is comfortable, but taking five minutes to put on jeans and a cardigan will make you feel more put together and less stressed. A scarf and a headband can be the perfect final touch to your messy bun.

DON’T PROCRASTIANTE!
There was a great article in the New Yorker about procrastination last October. It differentiates between people who procrastinate out of laziness and those who do it out to self-sabotage. If you are in the second category, you need set your own attainable standards. Maybe you should strive to get A’s in the classes you excel in and A-‘s or B+‘s in the classes you really struggle with. Be accountable to someone, either a tutor or a study group and feel the satisfaction of checking off to-do lists on your planner.

If I am dreading working on something, a problem set or an essay, I divide it up into manageable portions spread out over several days. It is easier to work on something if you know that you will only devote an hour to it per day than to sacrifice a whole Sunday. I also find it easier to do my work in the mornings. I also like to pretend that my deadlines are a day or two before the actual day so that I can get someone (a professor, T.A or savvy friend) to look over my work to make sure I haven’t missed the mark. Additionally, moving your deadlines forward is an insurance policy against the unpredictable.

This technique also applies for studying for exams. I take the time about two weeks before the exam to figure out what I’m going to study on what day, leaving the last two days before the exam open for review sessions and study group meetings. Remember that studying in a group should help you polish what you already know and fill in gaps of things you didn’t completely understand. It is a compliment to, not a substitute for, time spent studying by yourself.

Talk it out. If you are really feeling overwhelmed, try to figure out where the pressure is coming from. Talk to a trusted friend, family member or a counselor. Furthermore, keep noxious self-deprecating thoughts out of your mind. Ask yourself if you would criticize a friend the way you criticize yourself.

Sometimes I joke to my friends that I feel like a school robot. In fact, I feel more like a high-performance athlete. Following all these steps and taking care of myself sets me up to perform my best and take the time to enjoy this time in my life. My strategies, though arguably elaborate, ensure that I don’t have to pull all-nighters and I am always free to go out Friday or Saturday night.

And that’s just the thing I need to stay sane amid this sea of stress.

As much as it pains me to say, finals season is coming. For some, you’ve still got a few weeks before all hell breaks loose. For others, there are only 7 days between you and those dreaded cram-everything-you’ve-learned-in-the-past-three-months-into-a-100-questions tests. Needless to say, it’s a stressful time of year that always sneaks up on us, no matter how many syllabi we have or how much we tell ourselves that we’re going to start studying three weeks in advance.

So, since we’re really getting down to the wire here, I’ve compiled a little survival guide to help all of us get through the most stressful time of a college student’s life. May these 7 things (and the force) be with us all:

Evernote: For those of us that are a little on the scatterbrain side of things, check out Evernote. It will organize all of those pesky notes and due dates that seem to pile up during this time of year, and keep track of important due dates..i.e. that 10-page paper due in a week. The site even offers different ways to upload your info, i.e. picture message, text message, tweet, email, manual, or by their browser add-on. Basically, you have no choice but to be organized and on top of your game.

5-Hour Energy: Put down the Four Loko, and pick up a 10-pack of 5 Hour Energy. No, I’m not condoning abusing energy drinks, but I am saying that this stuff works like a dream for those all-nighters or early mornings when you just need something to keep you going. I know that the commercials may seem pretty lame, but it really works. People who use it on the reg report no crash effect and little to no jittery feeling after.

Wake Up Dialer.com: Let’s be real, sometimes textbooks are boring. So boring that you fall asleep while reading the first chapter out of the nine you need to review. That’s when your favorite British butler comes into play. Just log on to WakeUpDialer.com and give your number and the time you want to be woken up. Like an hour or two from now if you know this reading assignment is going to be a challenge.

A Bar of Dark Chocolate: Not that you need any more reasons to chow down on chocolate, but studies have actually shown that eating a bar of dark chocolate a day reduces stress. And, girrrrl, you know you be stressin’ right now. I highly recommend Trader Joe’s 100 calorie dark chocolate bars or dark chocolate dipped pretzels, but any variety will do. And if you combine an hour workout with it, you’ll be flying stress free for the rest of the semester.

Yoga Pants: It’s important to be comfy for those long ass study days, but it’s also important not to look like a total slob/feel so comfortable you’ll pass out the moment you sit down in the ‘brary. Enter: yoga pants. Whether they are the budget friendly pairs from Old Navy or the muy-expensive-but-totally-worth-it-because-they-make-your-butt-look-HOT kinds from Lululemon, just get some.

Ice/Hot Green Tea from Starbucks: So apparently green tea isn’t just delicious, it also protects your brain from wear and tear. Plus, it keeps you in a positive mental state by boosting signals to produce dopamine, which is kind of important during right now when you’ve got multiple exams and papers that are both mentally exhausting and just plain sucky.

Grades 2: This awesome new app is every college student’s dream. Basically, you tell the app the overall grade you want in the class and it tells you exactly what you need on the final to get it. Use it now and not only will it calm your nerves, but it can give you a heads up on which classes you really need to focus on.

For even more help on getting that 4.0, click here.

There’s a lot of great sites out there on the internet. If anyone would know that, you would. (After all, you did find us.) But finding all of them isn’t always easy. So most of the time you probably stick to the same old, same old, right? CollegeCandy. Facebook. Google. CollegeCandy. Maybe Texts From Last Night if you’re feeling adventurous. We know. We get it. Scouring the blogs for the best there is isn’t always easy and it’s definitely not quick. But now, you don’t have to do the legwork (or finger work? Er…) CollegeCandy’s Web Spy does it for you. Each week this column brings you a new find. From the best online shopping sites to the best places to waste your time to the best ways to get yourself organized and avoid procrastination, the last of which are the sites I’ll be focusing on right now.

The semester is winding down. Soon there will be papers to write and finals to study for, which means cutting out the procrastination and cracking down on the studying, which isn’t always easy. But fear not, our resident Web Spy has done her research, providing CollegeCandy readers with ten surefire ways to get organized and start studying.

1. FellowUp will get your organized.

2. With a little help from Evernote.

3. Then RescueTime can show you exactly what you’re spending your time doing.

4. So you know exactly what to tell Keep Me Out to help you avoid.

5. And then Soshiku can help adjust your scheduling, and reorganize your life.

6. While ReQall keeps track of your notes.

7. Of course, in the midst of all of this you’ll be registering for classes , which won’t be so bad with CourseRank.

8. And StingyCampus will help you take care of your other issues like finding campus housing and looking for jobs.

9. Afraid you won’t wake up in time to take the final after pulling an all nighter? WakeUpDialer has got you covered.

10. And when you really just need a break there’s Dear Blank, Please Blank.

It’s finals week. You’re living on coffee and chocolate. Your days are spent in the library. Your nights are spent in the library. You’re wracking your brain trying to remember historical facts no one knows about and chemical equations you will never use. You’re stressed and crazed and far from in the mood to write. But write you will have to do.

Because in exchange for not having to take a final for that literature class you have to write a paper. And not just any paper, but a good paper. A really good paper. Because this paper is worth a large chunk of your final grade. The problem is though, you’ve never really gotten a grip on that whole paper writing thing. Sure, you know the basics, but do you know the specifics? Do you know how to avoid the mistakes that will keep that A just out of reach?

Well, I do.

After four years as an English major, one year as a literature tutor, and two semesters worth of thesis writing, I think I’ve cracked the code. And I’m going to share my secrets with you. Below are the most common grammatical and paper writing mistakes, the things you always miss, the things you need to know, the rules standing between you and that elusive A. So bookmark this page and consult it when writing those final papers. You’ll thank me later.

1. No thesis statements.

Don’t even think about starting your paper until you have one of these. Your thesis statement is the entire point behind your paper. It’s the reason you’re writing your paper. It’s the idea that you are trying to prove. You can’t write a paper without a thesis statement. If you do your paper will have no focus. At all.

2. Confusing they’re/there/their.

Let’s clear up the confusion behind this one, shall we?

They’re is a contraction, used in place of the phrase “they are.” Did you hear about Justin and Selena? They’re going out.

There is used to represent a place. Where are Kourtney and Khloe? Over there at the bar.

Their is used to show possession of something. Who are the parents of baby Suri? Tom and Katie. She is their baby.

3. Not proving your point.

Once you have a thesis statement, something you want to prove, you actually have to prove it. So don’t just throw a whole bunch of important sounding information on a page and call it a day. That information has to be both useful and relevant. Before you dedicate a paragraph to something ask yourself, will this help me prove my thesis?

4. Mixing up affect and effect.

Affect is used when actions are affecting someone. My mental stability is far too affected by the lives of celebrities. Effect is used when one is talking about the effects of a situation. I’m still feeling the effects of Scarlett Johansson and Ryan Reynolds breakup.

5. Not using transition sentences.

When you move from paragraph to paragraph don’t just jump into a new topic. Yes, the first sentence is a topic sentence, but it also the closing of your last topic. So the first sentence of your new paragraph should do both. That’s why it’s a transition sentence. Transition words (however, nonetheless, on the contrary) are really helpful here.

6. Using the wrong than/then.

Here’s the deal.

If you’re writing about time or order you use then. Then Brad dumped Jen and got with Angelina.

If you’re comparing or contrasting you use than. I think Angelina is way prettier than Jen any way.

7. Using personal pronouns.

Do not use I. Do not use me. Don’t use us or we or we’re. Personal pronouns are a big no-no in formal papers. You are a detached voice relaying information, not a particular person sharing your beliefs.

8.Using double negatives.

This one is guaranteed to make your professor cringe every single time. You cannot use more than one negative in a sentence. That means you cannot say Ronnie didn’t do nothing. Rather you would say, Ronnie didn’t do anything.

9. Not citing your sources!

Whether you’re quoting Spark Notes or the Norton Anthology cite your sources. If you don’t it’s plagiarism, even if you don’t mean for it to be. So cite your sources. But do so correctly. First you have to find out what format your professor wants you to use. If you’re taking an English class it’s probably MLA. Find out which one you need to use and then check the guidelines.

10. Its/It’s.

It’s is a contraction. It represents “it is” or “it has.” It is very nice to meet you Leo. I loved you in Inception.

Its represents the possession of something, sort of like a gender neutral his or her. Look at the cute puppy cuddling with its mother.

You finished your last exam early and, after waiting for someone else to turn theirs in (you don’t want to be first!), ran down the steps of that lecture hall, slammed that baby on the desk and skipped your way to freedom. As you walk home you notice how great the air smells, how bright the sun is and how beautiful your campus is. School is out and you are feelin’ groovy.

After regaling your roommates with tales from your 90-minute essay exam (“I totally rocked that shiz!”), you head to your room to start the end-of-the-year cleaning session, beer in hand. You grab a garbage bag, sit down at your desk and start sifting through the piles of papers, books and notebooks that litter your desk.

In the back of your mind, you know that some of those notebooks will come in handy for next year’s classes. In the front of your mind, though, you know you will never look at them ever again. So, in a celebratory fashion, you toss one binder after another into the Hefty.

“Bye bye, Econ! See ya never, Psych 240!” The feeling is euphoric. All those syllibi, gone. All those Power Point slides, gone. Those damn course packs, gone. All those near-empty highlighters, gone.

Before you know it, you are left with nothing but a stack of books.

You gather the books, throw them into your backpack and head to the bookstore to sell them back. On your way, you start planning what you will do with all that extra money. A keg for the big end-of-the-year bash? A new bag? The possibilities are endless. Even though you know the bookstores totally screw you with the buy-back, you have, like, 12 books this time! Giant, expensive textbooks and lots of novels. You’re sure there is some serious cash flow coming your way.

The bag is heavy and by the time you make it to the bookstore you are sweating. Naturally, the line is super long and filled with other students hoping to make it rain. You stand there, cocked to the side from that overflowing bag of books, and watch student after student happily free themselves of the semester. Only the looks on their faces as they leave isn’t one of big money – it is anger.

When it is finally your turn, you unload your books onto the counter. The cashier scans them one at a time, forming two piles.

“We can’t use these,” he says, pointing to the larger stack. “They’re going with the new edition next year.” He offers to let you take them home (so nice of him), or he can donate them to whatever organization it is that wants your used copy of Tom Jones. You consider taking them – you aren’t going to give those away for free! – but then you realize that you’d have to carry those all back home, not to mention pack them up and move them.

“Ugh. Just keep them,” you say.

You don’t think things can get any worse and then he hands you your money. A whole $26. For 5 books. That wasn’t even a quarter of the cost of one! You rip that money out of his hands and storm out of the store.

——

Yeah, we’ve all been there. Maybe if you combine your money with all of your friends, you’d have enough for that keg.

Like with most things in my life (namely, the boy I’m kinda, sorta talking to right now), I have a very complicated relationship with college. Over the past four years, we’ve had our ups and downs. There have been moments when my only thoughts were, I love college (when I was living one of these moments), and there were others (like when I was writing my thesis) when I’ve thought, I hate college with a fiery passion…

Ahem.

But that’s probably because college is a complicated institution, full of things we want to do, things we should do, and things we have to do. Some of the stuff is fun (Saturday tailgates), and some of the stuff is not so fun (Sunday all-nighters). So often, we love college just as much as we hate it. It’s a different experience for everyone, but I’ve pulled some of the more universal love/hate conundrums that go hand in hand with the college experience.

Love: Buying new school supplies. Shopping for school supplies is an art form as far as I’m concerned. You need just the right number of pens, just the right size paper, the perfect color Post-Its. You buy everything you need and you set it all up on your desk, and you take a deep sigh of happiness. You are ready to take on the semester. With these supplies you can take on anything.

Hate: Running out of highlighter ink within the first two weeks of the semester. No, not because you bought really crappy highlighters or because you left the cap open and it all dried up (I hate when that happens!), but because you’ve been highlighting nonstop since the semester started. You’ve never had this much reading in your life and everything seems important. How are you supposed to choose what to highlight? So you highlight a lot. A lot. In all of your books. For all of your classes. And then your brand new highlighters dry up.

Love: Learning something new and interesting. Call me a geek but sometimes I actually enjoy my classes. Reading a good book, discussing an interesting theory, or exploring different ways to look at the world? Not the worst thing in the world. Sometimes it’s not only interesting, but actually entertaining. It’s in these moments that I love my major and my classes, and actually don’t mind the whole “going to class” thing.

Hate: Having all of the fun sucked out of it by writing a 10-page paper on it. Okay, so you love this book? Write a ten-page paper on it. What? Excuse me? Having to focus that much time and energy on any one thing will inevitably lead to you hate it. (Just ask your ex.) When I have to write papers or take tests on the topics that I most enjoy I don’t enjoy them anymore. Because suddenly it’s not something fun and interesting, it’s something I have to do. And nothing you have to do is ever really enjoyable. (Just ask me about sexy time with my ex.)

Love: Being treated like colleagues rather than students by professors. I love that in college the professors actually treat us like adults. They don’t baby us. They don’t coddle us. Some of them actually treat us like colleagues or friends rather than students. They are not demeaning and they don’t try to control us, and they actually listen to what we have to say. They respect us enough to see us as adults rather than young adults, (at least most of them anyway), and that makes our time with them so much more enjoyable.

Hate: Getting Facebook requests from those professors. I don’t care how cool you are, professor, I don’t want to be your Facebook friend. It’s just not going to happen. I can’t skip class and spend it on Facebook if you’re my friend. I can’t complain about papers, or joke about dropping out of school to become a stripper if you’re my Facebook friend. Because you might think I’m serious. (I’m not, by the way.) You might get insulted. You might not understand why that quote from textsfromlastnight.com was placed on my Facebook wall and you might not want to. So no professor, I don’t want to be your Facebook friend.

Love: Having the ability to design my own schedule. Probably one of the things that I always looked forward to the most about college was the ability to create my own college schedule. No classes on Monday. No classes before 10 a.m. Night classes only. Whatever I wanted, I could make happen. And I could make it happen with the best professors and the most entertaining (read: easiest) classes. College was like a dream come true. Or so it seemed.

Hate: When that schedule gets tossed out the window when none of those classes are open anymore. It was during the Fall semester of my freshman year that I first discovered every school’s dirty little registration secret. It may appear like students could choose their own schedules, but that was really only for the lucky few that had early registration times. The rest of us were left with nothing to choose from but Friday afternoon Intro to Public Speaking classes. Exactly what I was not looking for. So yes, I love that in college we have the potential to have a very easy-going schedule. I hate that this very rarely happens.

What about you? Share your loves and hates with college below. You know you got ‘em.
