Needless to say, the past 6 weeks sans college football has been somewhat difficult. I wander aimlessly around my apartment on Saturdays, unsure what to do with all that time. I fill the void by hunting down the players on campus, but now that they’re not training as much as usual, they’re not so easy to find. And trust me, I’ve tried.

Thank god, then, that Bowl Season is upon us! I finally have a reason to drink before 11am on a Saturday! have some exciting burly-man-on-burly-man action to fill my Saturdays! Yes, ladies, it’s officially time for the best of the best in college football to duke it out in the BCS bowl games.

Confused on how the BCS works? Everyone is. But until the government sorts this shiz out, I’ve got you covered. This guide will give you a look at all of the upcoming BCS games, the teams, and who you (or more importantly, me) think deserves to win. So grab those wings, crack open a beer and get ready for some serious football showdowns.

The Rose Bowl presented by Citi:
No. 7 Oregon Ducks (10-2) vs. No. 8 Ohio State (10-2)
Pasadena, CA; January 1st at 5pm EST on ABC
I will try to put aside my personal feelings towards Ohio State (did Tressell win Big Ten Coach of the Year?) but my heart is still filled with bitter rage. OSU is heading to the Rose Bowl for the first time since 1997, and Oregon is trying to win its first Rose Bowl since 1917. The Ducks have one of the most aggressive and quickest offenses in the nation, while Ohio State is known for an impenetrable (hehe) defense, which should make the game an interesting one. One I might watch if the nausea from Andre on NYE doesn’t prove lethal when mixed with the nausea and rage from seeing a Buckeye fan.

Who Will Win?
Expert Says: Oregon: 28 Ohio State: 20
I Say: Oregon. I want to see Puddles wearing Tressell’s sweatervest. Or at least see LeGarrette Blount punch someone.
Hot Quarterback: Oregon’s Jeremiah Masoli vs. OSU’s Terrelle Pryor

All-State Sugar Bowl:
No. 5 Florida Gators (12-1) vs. No. 3 Cincinnati Bearcats (12-0)
New Orleans, LA; January 1st at 8:30pm EST on FOX
The Gators have been un.stop.able. this whole season and Cincinnati’s coach just peaced out for Notre Dame. The odds are def against the Bearcats, but I’m all about the underdogs. Plus, I think they are out to prove themselves since Brian Kelly left. Cinci is rightfully undefeated, but Florida has Tim Tebow, a proven uber-man-beast-machine. It will basically come down to Florida’s offensive line’s ability to keep those out-for-blood Bearcats away from their moneymaker.

Expert says: Flordia 34 Cincinnati 17
I say: Cincinatti. Tim Tebow makes me yawn. And I think he’s lying about being a virgin; his gf is HOT.

Tostito’s Fiesta Bowl:
No. 6 Boise State Broncos (13-0) vs. No. 4 TCU Horned Toads (12-0)
Glendale, AZ; January 4th at 8:00pm EST on FOX
Mmmm. I love Tostito’s. Wait. Where was I? Oh yeah, so the Broncos beat Oregon in the first game of the season to prove that, like WuTang, BSU ain’t nothing to fudge with. In my opinion, they have the upper hand in this game: their insane offense remains virtually the same since last season when they played TCU in the Poinsetta Bowl. But, the Horned Toads (Editor’s Note: Worst. Name. Ever?) have had a huge chunk of the spotlight lately with their equally as scary defense, which could make this THE game to watch. Through my fingers though, because high-intensity football gives me a heart/panic attack.

Experts Say: Boise State 24 TCU 21
I Say: Toughie – both teams deserve it. I’m just thankful they aren’t playing on Boise State’s vom-inducing blue field
Hot Quarterback: TCU’s Andy Dalton vs. Boise State’s Kellen Moore

Fed-Ex Orange Bowl:
No. 9 Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (11-2) vs. No. 10 Iowa Hawkeyes (10-2)
Miami, FL; January 5th at 8:00pm EST on FOX
Okay, I may or may not be biased (and my kitten may or may not be wearing a tiny black and gold cheerleader outfit), but Iowa has come from basically out of nowhere to being one of the best teams in the nation. Our (yes, I’m on the team) defense has, on average, allowed less than 200 yards per game, while Georgia Tech’s mind-boggling option-offense has averaged over 300 yards per game. The two teams have never played each other, so, unlike a Hugh Grant movie, the outcome is a mystery.

Who Will Win?
Experts Say: Georgia Tech 27 Iowa 17
I Say: Iowa. Our QB is nice and healthy again and I will be rooting them on (read: screaming at Tech fans) from the stands in Miami.
Hot Quarterback: Iowa’s Ricky Stanzi vs. Tech’s Josh Nesbitt

BCS Championship Game:
No. 1 Alabama Crimson Tide (13-0) vs. No. 2 Texas Longhorns (13-0)
Pasadena, CA; January 7th at 8:00pm EST on ABC
Thank goodness Texas won out against Nebraska, because not only would it have blown Iowa’s chance at a BCS bowl, but Texas has definitely proven itself to be one of the best teams in the nation this season. And thank goodness Alabama took down almighty Tebow, because they deserve this opportunity as well. Both teams have incredible offenses, Texas with Heisman nominee Colt McCoy and Bama has Heisman winner Mark Ingram, which will make this game a clash of the college football gods.

Who Will Win?
Experts Say: Alabama 28 Texas 24
I Say: Another toughie. I’m going to go with Texas because the Crimson Tide is already jinxing themselves

And that is where I had my first encounter with Huaraches. They were the trendiest and most-worn sandal on the pool deck. All the grandparents were wearing ‘em.

How they became the biggest trend for Spring shoes for the under 75 crowd, I’ll never know. Fashion is always surprising me.

They look really comfortable, but cute? I think not.

But whether I like it or not, this shoe is leaving Boca and making its way into the closets of fashionistas nationwide.

Huaraches: Love Em or Hate Em?

One week until buffalo wing/pizza/guacamole heaven. One week until the biggest sporting event of the year. One week until the big halftime show. Are you ready for some football?

If you’re like many of the ladies out there, you don’t know many of the facts about the upcoming “big game” and you may not even care, but what better way to impress those sports lovin’ hotties at the Super Bowl party? And isn’t everything more fun when you know what’s going on and have someone to root for?

So without further ado, here is a basic Super Bowl XLIII 101.

The Teams

The game pits the top team in the NFC (National Football Conference), the Arizona Cardinals, against the top team in the AFC (American Football Conference), the Pittsburgh Steelers

The Arizona Cardinals:

-This is the first time in team history that the Cardinals are going to the Super Bowl. With 61 years under their belt, they have held the second longest championship drought in American sports.

-The Cardinals made it into the wild card round of the playoffs with a 9-7 record and shocked footballs fans everywhere when they won all 3 of their playoff games, despite being underdogs in each game. They are only the second 9-7 team in history to make it to the Super Bowl.

-The Cardinals are lead by quarterback Kurt Warner, the third oldest QB to play in the game (he’s 37). While leading the St. Louis Rams, Warner won the NFL MVP award twice , Super Bowl MVP once, and has one Super Bowl ring. (Pretty impressive guy, ladies!)

-The Cardinals have an explosive offense with Warner’s strong passing ability and wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald, who has an amazing ability to catch seemingly uncatchable balls while running all over his opponents.

-The Cardinals are 6 ½ point underdogs in the Super Bowl.

The Pittsburgh Steelers:

-The Steelers had a regular season record of 12-4.

-The Steelers has the #1 ranked defense in the National Football League. (Vince Lombardi, famous coach whom the Super Bowl trophy is named after, said “Offense wins games, defense wins championships.” We’ll see if that’s true.)

-The Steelers will be going for their sixth Super Bowl title. If they win, they’ll hold the NFL record for most SB wins. Their last SB win was in 2006, against the Seattle Seahawks.

-The Steelers coach, Mike Tomlin, took over the team in 2007. He is the third youngest head coach in any of the four major North American sports, the tenth African-American head coach in NFL history and the first in Pittsburgh, the third African-American and youngest head coach to make it to the Super Bowl.

The Game

-The 43rd Super Bowl will air at 6:20 p.m. EST on NBC.

-The game will take place at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida. It is the second SB in this particular stadium, the fourth in the city of Tampa.

-The tagline for this year’s Super Bowl is “Believe In Now” (fitting, considering the Cardinals’ surprising appearance).

-The Super Bowl is famous for its halftime show which draws the biggest names in music (recent performers include U2, The Rolling Stones, Prince and Britney Spears) and has even caused scandal and controversy at the FCC (Nipplegate 2004 anyone?). This year Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band will be performing; it is his first SB half-time show performance.

-Jennifer Hudson will be singing the National Anthem before the game; it will be her first public appearance since the tragic murder of her nephew, brother and mother.

-The Super Bowl is almost as famous for its ads as it is for the game itself and this year will be no different. It’s the first year that a 30 second time slot cost $3 million. As of September 2008, NBC had sold all but 10 of it’s coveted advertising spots. Due to the economic crisis, some traditional SB advertisers, like General Motors and FedEx, will not be airing any ads this year.

A Few Fun Facts

-An average of 130 million people watch the Super Bowl.

-About 8 million pounds of guacamole and 14,500 tons of chips will be eaten on SB Sunday.

-Antacid sales increase by 20 percent on the Monday after the Super Bowl.

-Super Bowl Sunday is the top at-home party event of the year.

-SB Sunday is the second largest food consumption day, behind only Thanksgiving.

-A poultry farm and major supplier of wings (for buffalo wings, of course) in Texas recently went bankrupt, causing speculation that there will be a shortage of buffalo wings this year.

-The Vince Lombardi trophy, presented to the winning team, is created by Tiffany & Co, takes approximately four months and 72 man hours to create and is valued at $25,000.

-The winning team gets the coveted Super Bowl ring and a $78,000 bonus per player; the losing team gets $40,000 per man.

Now you’re ready for the Super Bowl.

Virginia voters have definitely heard to the call to get up and out, as many registration booths have been “overwhelmed” by the amount of people trying to insure their say in this election.  According to the Los Angeles Times;

“Virginia has logged more than 300,000 new voters since the year began. The state does not record party affiliation, but it says that 41% of the new registrants are under the age of 25, and an additional 20% are between the ages of 25 and 34.

The influx of young voters, a core part of Obama’s voting coalition, is an encouraging sign for the Democratic nominee in a state that has not picked a Democrat for president in more than 40 years .”

It’s always encouraging when young people put down their ipods and blackberrys and decide to take responsibility for a nation they’ll soon be controlling, and it’s even more encouraging that a Democratic candidate unlike any other is the one that gets them fired up.

No matter what party you affiliate yourself with, it’s got to make you happy that someone has finally (seemingly) lit the fire under the ass of America’s youth.

I’ll be honest: I’m a bitch. I have no problem telling it like it is, talking about someone behind his/her back or telling secrets about people I hate. This is why people fight to stay on my good side.

Which is why people are so surprised when they find out about my passion for animals. I cry when those commercials for animal shelters come on the TV, I have to look away from movies or TV shows when an animal gets injured and I wanted to personally kill Michael Vick when it was discovered he was running that evil dog fighting ring.

It is weird, I know, but I can’t help but feel for creatures who don’t have a voice to defend themselves. Yes, even if they have the teeth or claws to do so.

Like sharks. (Yes, I am being completely serious!) Sharks are most often thought of as predators, but lately off the coast of Florida they have become victims. In the past year more and more sharks have been found murdered in the water. There is no excuse for harming another life – especially an innocent one – and it is up to us to protect every creature on this planet.

I mean, in America, the stereotypical retiree will move down to Florida to spend their time lounging by the pool in a gated community or playing a few holes on the golf course. Lame. In Japan, adult films for senior citizens, aka “elderly porn” is growing into quite the profitable franchise, according to porn producing giant Ruby Productions.

While America’s economy is declining, many entertainment venues (including golf courses) are taking a hit. In Japan, at least one retiree is cashing in on the entertainment biz. Shigeo Tokuda, 73, is the Ron Jeremy of elderly porn.

CNN correspondent Kyung Lah describes Tokuda as “the star of his movies in every way, romancing his co-stars, no matter their age, no matter their needs.” And apparently, his films are no-holds-barred, much like anything Jenna Jameson has appeared in.

This human interest story might come as a shock to American citizens, but as a nation, Japan is home to the world’s highest percentage of people over 65. Who says the greater populace can’t have a little fun? Tokuda isn’t some pervy old man, either. He’s been married for forty-four years, and his wife supports his new career path. Lah reports that he’s a polite and humble man, and though it’s not easy to watch Tokuda’s raunchy scenes, “it’s a little like watching your grandfather in a situation you never dared to dream.” Aww, that’s sweet. Or creepy.

In any case, Tokuda can be considered a retirement legend. I’m sure there’s plenty of guys half- or one-third his age who would love to achieve such celebrity status. And if he can chase his dreams at 73, I can’t wait for my own retirement.

For all that we liked about it, this apartment had one major drawback, which we discovered with some surprise the first night we moved in: The walls were paper thin.

After carting what seemed like thousands of boxes, a big screen TV and a king sized bed up a few flights of stairs in the heat of the Florida summer, the last thing on our minds was making love.

Not so for our neighbors, who started having sex so loudly that I could hear it in the shower at about six o’clock in the afternoon.

At about nine, my boyfriend and I had given up all pretense of affording our new neighbors their modesty and had our ears fully to the wall, listening intently as they changed position, talked dirty, even spanked each other.

Usually, I would get some perverse amusement from a scene such as this, but it only made me feel, well, sad. I didn’t know if the couple next door had been moving all day like we had, but they obviously had the energy for a marathon lovemaking session. I thought with some embarrassment that the time we had spent listening to the rabbits on the other side of our wall, not unpacking or resting, could have just as easily been spent having sex. Not crazy end of the world sex in which our neighbors were engaging, but sex nonetheless.

Eventually they stopped, and I more or less put it out of my mind, chalking that particular session up to the amorous couple not having seen each other in months, or, judging by the ferocity of the sounds they made, years.

But they continued at their frenzied pace. Every day at six, the sex would commence and go on well into the night. Every time it did, I found myself wanting to have sex less and less, knowing that there was no way we could compete.

One night, a week or so later, I woke up to a furious banging noise on the wall behind our bed. It appeared as though the couple next door had moved their headboard to the same wall that our bed was up against.

The next part sounds like it comes from an episode of Sex and the City, but it’s true. I was so tired of hearing the couple next door go about their business, so tired of the doubts about the state of my sexual relationship that it had somehow ingrained into my mind, that I woke my boyfriend up, turned off the music that we had fallen asleep to, and proceeded to have the loudest sex of my life.

Granted, a number of the noises I made were no more than posturing, but I found it sort of freeing to be able to scream at the top of my lungs, and to know that someone next door would hear it, would know what my boyfriend and I were doing. By the time we finished, I realized that I was so loud, I couldn’t hear the neighbors anymore, and that they had stopped a while ago. They could have stopped because they were done, but more likely I thought that they had stopped to listen to us, the same way we had listened to them.

They continued to have loud sex at six, and sometimes in the middle of the night, but it didn’t bother me as much because I felt free now to have wild, loud sex too without fear that someone would hear or judge. In the year we lived there, we never saw the neighbors next door.

I like to think of them as furiously f*cking guardian angels.
