The Love List: Bar Mitzvahs, Booties and Must Have Books.

51jwtw61hhl-1.jpg

[Welcome to my Weekly Love List. A list on all things I love, because if I love them - well then obviously you may (and should) love them too. As the Backstreet Boys song says (and yes I am actually quoting them) “My Love is All I Have To Give.” So with that throwback, here are this week’s list-worthy things…]

1. Bar Mitzvah Disco book. A compilation of only the most awkward photos EVER. 13-year-olds in puffy dresses in the 70s, 80s and 90s. Guaranteed to make you laugh. Always. Oh, and in case you’re looking to break out in Hollywood, BMD is now recruiting for all of your bar/bat mizvah home videos. That special-ness that was your glittery hot pink dress needs to be shared. Because embarassment is always worth loving.

2. Quoteable Cards. I love, love, LOVE these. I send them for birthdays, I put them on my vision board (yes, I have a vision board) on my fridge, in my cubicle– all over. Nothing like an inspirational reminder when you’re feeling down and out.

3. The Gap’s 30% off sale. I love Gap because stuff is always, always on sale. and I love that until tomorrow (January 4th), any in store purchase of $75.00 or more is 30% off! More cozy socks, cute sweaters and comfy bras? I’m in!

4. Seychelles Bootie. With jeans? Cute. With tights? Also Cute. With leggings and a chunky sweater? You guessed it: cute, cute, cute. Oh, and did I mention they are also on sale? Now that is what I call cuuute.

5. Would You Rather books. Would you rather . . . have breast implants made of Nerf or Play-Doh? Walk in on your parents, or have them walk in on you? These books are great for procrastination, for drinking conversation, for getting to know your hallmates, or for just absurd fun. Get all 3 because, trust me on this one, you will become addicted!

Celebrity Chic on the Cheap: All About Amy Adams’ Floral Frock.

amy_adams.jpg[Every week our style guru takes a celebrity look and breaks it down for you, our poor college fashionista. What does that mean? It means that while the celebrities are spending $5,000 on an ensemble, you don’t have to.

All you have to do is click on the goods and - boom - you can buy the entire ensemble. Yes, we know; there is a spot for her in heaven.]

So it’s like negative 500 outside, which is making me so jealous of:

A. all the spring clothes that are starting to make their way into the stores – even in places like the North Pole, and

B. all the celebs who are in L.A. wearing cute, warm, summery tops.

Like this one by our gal pal Amy Adams. Even though it is not the most original, or trendy, or hard to put together, it’s cute, it’s breezy…and it’s NOT made of wool.

So instead of brushing it off, I am featuring it to make our winter days feel a littttle warmer. Either save it for spring, wear it under an oversized sweater, or move to California.

Here is this week’s Celebrity Chic on the Cheap: All About Amy Adams’ Floral Frock. Read More »

The Love List: Tis the Season for Gap Scarves, Embarrassing Photos and Things That Will Make You Fat.

gap.jpgWelcome to my Weekly Love List. A list, on all things I love. Because if I love them – well then obviously you may (and should) love them too.

As the Backstreet Boys song says (and yes I am actually quoting them) “My Love is All I Have To Give.” So with that throwback, here are this week’s list-worthy things…]

1. Tis the Season for fabulous gap commercials. Is it just me or have they brought back this striped sweater/scarf ensemble every. Single. Year. Since 1998? When it all started with the multicolored one? At least this year, Jason Biggs, Freddy Rodriguez and Romany Malco make it look oh so cute. Scroll through a variety of ads with your favorite celebs, and pick up some cozy sweaters to boot. Read More »

Celebrity Chic on the Cheap: Miley Cyrus Sports the Boho Chic

With this Indian Summer we’ve got going on- it’s not warm enough to wear the sundresses or cute jean shorts, but it’s not cold enough to wear all those fabulous jackets and oversized sweaters – we are left with three options:

1) Giant armpit stains in our sweaters

2) 24/7 goose bumps in our tanks

3) Resort to a nice balance: the Boho Chic.

Obvi, number 3 is the way to go. Boho Chic is just perfection for those warm fall days that we all love so much. And the way Tween-Queen Miley is rocking it I just want to snag her style (even if she is, like, 12).

She looks cute and chic without being cheesey, and is one celebrity that actually know hows to dress. her. age.

So, here we go:

The Sophomore Slump

depressedI thought, like most people, that I did well freshman year. I made it through, I managed to get decent grades, I didn’t fail or anything bad like that. So I went home pretty confidant that sophomore year would be the same…

Boy was I wrong.

I’ve been back for about 5 weeks, and I feel like my head is about to explode! My classes seem like they’re a million times harder than last year. Last year, 15 hours left me bored with way too much free time. This year 17 hours feels like it’s going to kill me!

Now don’t get me wrong, I most likely brought this on myself. I’m in the middle of trying to switch majors (my application is almost due, yet another thing on my to-do list) and I’m trying to make sure that my freshman year in the school of fine arts wasn’t a total waste. But I can’t be the only one, can I?

Maybe it’s just my school, but it seems like they go too easy on freshman, and then go way too hard on everyone else. It leaves too much of a gap that no one can make up in one summer. Read More »

Celebrity Chic on the Cheap: YOU wear Short Shorts!

rihanna.jpgAs a kid, I was never really a fan of shorts. Unless they were my brothers mesh Umbro’s or later, the – who knows why they were trendy but they were – mesh bulldog shorts.

I found shorts to ride up, leaving me constantly trying to pick a wedgie when no one was looking (yet someone always managed to see). And let’s face it- unless you have legs like Gisele Bundchen walking around on a summer day can be more than quite uncomfortable in a pair of short shorts.

But these past few season’s shorts have been unavoidable. They have been everywhere and they have been CUTE. With heels? Cute. With sandals? Also cute!

Much like that annoying tag-along friend of yours, shorts have found their way into every occasion. From bars to the beach shorts have become appropriate (and trendy) attire.

So it would only be appropriate that before it gets too cold (although I’m sure some freshman girl will be wearing them to the bar- in January- with no coat and you will obviously spend at least five mintues talking about how ridiculous she looks before you realize that you did that too) that I bring you:

Celebrity Chic on the Cheap: YOU Wear Short Shorts!

High Waisted jean shorts- High-waisted shorts make your legs look like they go on forever. Not to mention these are so super affordable! So ladies- start NAIR-ing! (Seriously when was the last time you thought about Nair?!) Read More »

The Five Sweetest Summertimey Things!

bucks.jpgSummer is not coming to a close! Do not listen to your television blaring “back to school” commercials at you! Keep on loving the sun and living the summertime life. Here are my five favorite things about summer – the good, the bad and the sweaty.

1. Venti Starbucks Iced Passion Tea Lemonade (with two pumps of melon):

If you haven’t tried this drink, walk… no, RUN, to your nearest Starbucks. Don’t worry; if you live in America it will probably be no further than a block away. This drink is the greatest non alcoholic summer beverage I’ve consumed. I’ve even attempted to make it the greatest alcoholic beverage I’ve consumed. Do not mix with vodka! Not good. Anyway, it’s sweet, tangy, caffeine free and most importantly, it’s pink.

The bad?: Friends mock you for embarrassingly long and girly drink order and local Starbucks staff start knowing you as “Two Pump Melon Girl.”

2. Rainbow flip flops

Obvious summertime staple! These go with everything and flip flops are the only shoe of choice for the summer. I have a beach pair, which are completely destroyed and a nice pair, which are on their way to being completely destroyed. Can wear these to class, bars and the gym. But only to the gym if you plan on just walking around observing, in lieu of legit exercise. My kind of gym shoes! Read More »

Jean Therapy

jeans

It is impossible for me to find jeans that fit me well. If they are long enough (I stand a tall 5’10), then the rise is too low. If the rise is high enough, the pants are too short. And if I am lucky enough to get those trendy little jeans over my larger-than-average thighs, they rarely make it past my larger-than-average ass (thanks mom!).

Jean shopping for me is like bathing suit shopping for most girls. I absolutely dread it. I wait until the last possible second (like yesterday when my favorite pair ripped in the crotch for the fourth time) before making my way to the store. Once there, I bring armloads of jeans into the dressing room and try on every last one. There are often tears. And there is rarely a purchase.

Recently, though, I have come across a few brands of jeans that truly are made for every body. They are longer than the standard 32” that most designer jeans (Sevens, Citizens, True Religions) run and cut a little more generously for the real female body. Some are somewhat pricey, but when you have problems finding pants like me, the price becomes an afterthought: Read More »

Oh Gap, You’ve Finally Won Me Over

dresses1.jpgtulip-dress1.jpgpink-dress1.jpg

Ballet Dress, $69.50, Strapless Tulip Dress, $69.50, Silk Voile Pleated Dress, $69.50

I’ve never been much of a Gap fan and when I have found things I like, I’ve clipped the tags off my purchases and refused to divulge where they came from.

There’s just something about the Gap that reminds me of suburbia. I hate suburbia. There’s just something ominious about the sprawl…like a fungus or something. I’d rather live in West Virginia than live in ‘burbs. I don’t want to go crazy and say that I’d rather live in some godforsaken state like Kansas…but I could do West Virginia. I’ve always liked banjos after all, especially ones which duel. Read More »

Calling All Fashion Designers…Make Up Your Damn Mind People.

skinny-jeans1.jpgEvery year, every season, fashion seems to be pretty particular. Kind of like the bitty old women who order their salads with extra tomato, hold the croutons, dressing on the side, and please use ONLY romaine lettuce– fashion trends the past few years have been distinct and particular.

Skinny jeans, vests, bubble dresses and wedges were seen in the collections of every designer from Marc Jacobs to Miu Miu to the guest designers for Target. I always like the idea of being told what’s “in.” My eye gets used to the new styles quickly and I felt sooo like LiLo (Lindsay Lohan) this year in my skinny jeans, skull tops and black nail polish.

So what gives now? Clearly the fashion geniuses of the world have been slacking/ not collaborating/ doing too many drugs to have any sort of open communication. Or maybe they decided to throw the ways of uniformity out the window and let originality take over, but either way, I for one am confused! It’s a smorgasbord of fashion out there and anything goes. Super-skinny, super wide, low rise, high-waisted (um, helllllo camel toe), big and printed shirts like the ones my grandma rocks when she goes to get her hair done, or form fitted and boyish (have you seen this springs Gap collection? boy scouts anyone?) Fashion this season is more fickle then I am at an ice-cream store (and trust me I am FI-CKLE). Read More »
