Friday Faves: Hands Off My Closet, Dude

skinny jeans men intro

[After four years of writing in our undies, we've accumulated a lot of great content on CollegeCandy. I realized this when I was reading the site the other night....also in my undies. So many awesome posts get forgotten, so we decided it was time to bring 'em back. So kick off your pants, kick up your feet and enjoy.]

I love dudes. Straight up, dudes are amazing with their tallness and deep voices and facial hair and whatnot. I even like their ability to eat astounding amounts of food and their random, dorky humor. There are so many awesome things about guys that girls in general just don’t have.

However, there are some things that girls have that guys should just stay away from. These things mostly exist in the realm of fashion (and make-up, but we won’t go there because dudes should not wear make-up, period. We’re talking to you, Adam Lambert). Here is the list of the most heinous fashion crimes committed by the male population.

Get it? Got it? Good. Want some more? Don’t worry, there are plenty more faves where this came from.

I Love Your Style: Sanoe Lake

Who or what inspires your style? Many of us use Hollywood A-listers (like Diablo Cody) or movie characters (like Annie Hall) as style inspiration, even though, most of the time, they are being dressed from head to toe by the best stylists.

Which we don’t have.

And sometimes it’s damn near impossible to work their Hollywood looks into our not-so-Hollywood lives. I’ve made it my mission to tap into the mind of a fashion stylist and show you how to take your style inspiration – whatever it may be – and make it more you!

Sometimes in this (awesome) summer heat, the last thing on our minds isn’t what else we can add to an outfit to showcase our style, but how many layers we can remove without flashing too much skin or, worse, a nipple. And if I had to name one person who balances this all out perfectly, it’s Sanoe Lake.

Not familiar with her? Well, this part-surfer part-actress is part-Japanese, part-English and part-Hawaiian, the perfect combo for her breakout role in Blue Crush. (Which, like to admit it or not, you know you stop to watch when it’s on TNT on a Saturday.) In the movie, you don’t get to see much of Sanoe’s style as she’s either wearing a hotel maid uniform or rocking her bathing suits (and the occasional board-short).  But off the movie set, Sanoe takes her cool, laid-back surfer style with her, which makes for some pretty gnarly (in a good way) style. She’s a surfer girl from the waves to the street, and she does it well. Read More »

Budget Stylista: 4 Dresses To Get You Through The Summer

And the best news is – they’re a go for any event. Swap the sandals for stilettos and the totes for a totes cute clutch and you’re ready to go from beach/street fair/day drinking to dinner/karaoke bar/night drinking.

So get those closets (and sunscreen ready!). It’s dress season, bitches! Read More »

I Love Your Style: Queen Gorgo

TOGA! TOGA! TOGA!

Who or what inspires your style? Many of us use movie characters (like Adriana La Cerva) or celebrities (like Khloe Kardashian) as style inspiration, even though, most of the time, they are being dressed from head to toe by the best stylists. Which we don’t have. And sometimes it’s damn near impossible to work their Hollywood looks into our not-so-Hollywood lives. I’ve made it my mission to tap into the mind of a fashion stylist and show you how to take your style inspiration – whatever it may be – and make it more you!

So, you may not know this, but I’m a teensy obsessed with world history.  The fact that I’d rather watch a movie like “300″ over a movie like “Legally Blonde” makes it’s safe to say that I am a history nerd raised to the 10th power.  But while the battles and the coups and the whole mummy thing interests me, what really gets me riled up is what everyone was wearing.

Many of us have a mental image (based on movies) of what ancient Greeks, Romans and Egyptians wore. Beautiful and sexy yet simple things, like long white robes, gladiator sandals, gold accessories and olive branches in the hair. The “style” was ethereal and stunning – it’s no wonder so many of today’s trends are based on that ancient look.

And it’s no wonder I am so obsessed with all things toga-inspired. Most likely a result of my 200th viewing of the bloody, thrilling action film, “300.” Read More »

Wardrobe Wish List: Nine West Skipper Boot

zz2z3

I’m really sad to see summer go (waaaah, goodbye beach days!), but I am kinda, sorta (ok, REALLY) excited to break out my new wardrobe for fall. I’m getting sick of my flip flops and summer dresses and really just want to wear some light sweaters and <drool> boots!

But we’re not quite there yet. Even though the nights are getting chillier, it’s still too warm to break out the biggest trends for fall without looking a tad out of place. Thank god for Nine West! To help all of us transition from summer to oh-so-delicious fall, they have given us the Skipper boot.

It’s nice and boot-y (that’s an adjective, not a noun) on the bottom with great detail like durable leather, straps and buckles over the ankle. But what makes this the best. boot. ever is the perforated shaft. Not only does this detail make the boot unique and different (and you know me, I like different), but those holes lighten everything up a bit so  you can now rock your precious boots without feeling as though you’ve dressed too warmly for the weather. Tuck a pair of skinnies into the Skipper and you’ve got the perfect look for this in-between-seasons kinda time. Read More »

Shopping Your Closet: The Basic White Tank

white tank[I used to show you how to pull off runway trends in the series "Rock the Look." In this new series, I'll be taking a different item you probably already have in your closet each week and showing you three new ways to wear it. After all, the best shopping tip anyone will give you is to only buy pieces that work with something you already own. Last week we played around with those shorts you have in your closet and this week we're going to put that white tank to work.]

Everyone has a basic white tank, like this classic Theory top, in their wardrobe. Maybe you wear it under a sweater, or with sweats on a lazy day. However, that basic white tank is not reaching its full fashion potential. Such a versatile piece can be worn in so many different ways, it’s like having ten outfits in one!

Here are three new ways to rock that tank top: Read More »

The Budget Stylista: Channel Your Inner Moses With Gladiator Sandals

gladiator2The gladiator sandal.

At first glance, they leave me thinking, “Why else would I wear all this stuff on my ankle unless I was going to Delta Sig’s Toga Party?” Unless I was going to grab a stick, part the red sea and call myself the second coming of Moses, Gladiator sandals didn’t really seem like my vibe. I was perfectly happy with my patent leather flats and woven wedges for summer. But then you go to stores like Saks, and Nordstrom, and DSW and Target and the more you see the more you like them. Sort of like The Pussycat Dolls; at first you think WTF is this crappy song, but by since the radio plays it 3 times every. single. hour, by days end you’re obsessed.

So now with my newfound gladiator obsession, not only do I have the perfect pair of shoes if I do decide to step up to the Moses challenge, but I have those perfect gladiator flats for my maxi dresses and awesome gladiator pumps for my cute summer minis as well.

So here is a whole range of options – from flats to heels, tan to black. There are so many options that it’s a cinch to find not only the ones that won’t give you blisters, but the perfect sandal to flatter your tooties, too! (Note: yes, there is even a pair out there for those of us with cankles. Go for the ones that don’t hug right around your ankle and they will elongate your legs. Trust me….) Read More »
